I received an ARC of this book. No spoilers.
This was the perfect book for a rainy summer day.
Having visited Charleston once in early summer, I immediately felt transported back there while reading. Even though the story wasn't set in the exact places I visited, the author's descriptions brought the city to life so vividly that I found myself wanting to plan a return trip—especially in the fall.
What surprised me most was how the setting felt both like Charleston and like a small town at the same time. Throughout the book, I kept picturing a small town that I visit every year. I saw myself picturing what stores/restaurants the characters would be visiting if in this town.
I also connected with the book because I share the same industry as the main female character. It was fun for me to read someone just as passionate about their work as I am. That connection made parts of the story especially enjoyable and relatable for me.
As I was reading, I found myself wondering about many of the secondary characters as well. I wanted to know more about their personalities, their histories, and how their relationships would continue to develop. I am hoping the secondary characters will continue to have a role in Book #2.
A few standout moments without giving away any spoilers:
Chapter 6 was one of my favorites.
Chapter 14 was another highlight.
The ending of Chapter 18 had me completely on the edge of my seat.
By the time I reached Chapter 26, I could not believe that I was already close to the end of the story.
I am already looking forward to Book #2 and hoping that a storyline briefly mentioned toward the end of this book eventually becomes its own story in a future installment. There seems to be so much more to explore in this world and with these characters.
I kept thinking how beautifully this story could translate to the screen. A movie adaptation filmed in Charleston (with local talent involved) would be something truly special. This book has all the ingredients for a heartfelt and visually stunning film.
A wonderful read that left me wanting more, both from the characters and from Charleston itself. Without question, 5 out of 5 stars!

What I liked- the setting and description. I felt like I was in Charleston. It’s cozy and a quick read.

I was drawn to this book because of my love for cosy stories, especially ones that have bookshops in them! Autumn is the perfect season to envelop yourself in, and this book sounded like being wrapped in a warm, woollen scarf on a brisk autumn day.
Description and imagery are definitely the highlight of the book. The gentle way the crisp autumn weather, and the idyllic town were portrayed was enchanting. I could almost smell the warm bread pudding tea, and feel the chill in the air.
The characters were relatively basic, as most of the narrative was given to describing what people ate and drank, and the beautiful town of Charleston. Their personalities remained quite static throughout the story, and some behaviour was confusing. [SPOILERS] The outrage Brooks displayed towards Autumn seemed very misplaced - it was only his Aunt Jane who had done anything 'wrong', and for some reason it took him a very long time to figure out it was even her who'd done it. His treatment of Autumn seemed unfair: she was put in the situation against her will, and it was Jane's responsibility to fix it not hers. This unfortunately made the romance plot feel uncomfortable also, as I can't imagine wanting to start a romance with a man who had treated me so unreasonably! Jane's character was sweet, and there's a promising relationship thread between her and Autumn, but the way she just dropped Autumn in her mess and then abandoned her didn't feel in line with a respectful friendship. [END OF SPOILERS]
The pacing was slow and relaxing, with much time spent on cosy details of food and atmosphere. It was a relaxing, warm read, and made me very hungry! I really enjoyed the short chapters, showing each change in scene separately.
I felt a weird shift during the second half of the book: the style of writing changed in lots of little ways. Not come across this before in a book, and I enjoyed the first half much more than the second, which became less flowing and more confusing. There were also intermittent grammar and punctuation errors, and a couple of places where there were small continuity issues.
Dialogue was unfortunately often stressful to read due to two issues:
One - inconsistent use of contractions. All characters would go long periods never using them (which was jarring as the majority of modern day, middle class people use them) but then out of nowhere they'd suddenly start using them. Very odd.
Two - a single character's dialogue being split across multiple lines with incorrect punctuation used to show this. Splitting up one bit of speech is confusing enough, in my opinion, but if it's done there needs to be only one set of 'closing' speech marks used (when the character has completely finished speaking), but the book used speech marks after each line of speech, which gave the impression that it was a new character speaking. This made reading disjointed and confusing, which pulled me completely out of the relaxing atmosphere.
Overall I think this book is brilliant at creating a lovely world that readers will want to dive straight into, and the plot will definitely appeal to romance readers. If the writing style had remained consistent throughout, and the structure had been more reliable, it would have been a really memorable read for me, and a higher rating.

Autumn is a secret book reviewer with a large online following who receives many of her books from a friend at a local bookstore. One day, her friend slips her nephew’s manuscript into Autumn’s stack without telling her, setting the story in motion.
The author’s descriptive writing really stands out. I could almost smell the fresh coffee, the pages of well-loved books, and feel the warm, inviting atmosphere of the bookstore. Those details made it easy to get lost in the story, and it was a quick, enjoyable read that kept me turning the pages.
My one disappointment was that, despite the title, I found myself wishing for more descriptions of Charleston itself. The setting had so much potential, and I would have loved to experience more of the city’s charm, history, and scenery alongside the story.
Overall, I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, the love of books woven throughout the novel, and the unique premise. While I wanted a bit more from the setting and a little more depth in places, it was still an enjoyable read that I’d recommend to readers who love bookstores, bookish characters, and light contemporary fiction.

I had the pleasure of reviewing this book as an ARC. There are no spoilers. This story was as promised, a cozy, heartfelt read. The characters were well developed and easy to visualize. The settings and scenes were well described and made me feel like I was inside the story. I can’t wait to read the books to come and unfold more stories. Very enjoyable.

Great quick read set in Charleston fall! Loved the small town vibes about falling in love with book and life at the same time. If you want a cozy read of family ties, book store magic and romance you’ll love this story. Can’t wait for the next book!

This book is great for a fall day, and more specifically a rainy fall day with jazz and low lighting in the background and with a warm cup of pumpkin spice coffee. If you like small town romance, Hallmark movies, misunderstanding tropes, then this book is for you.

June 22, 2026It reads "A story within a story". Instead of discussing the details that I did not enjoy. I would rather give some advice. Now my question is, what did the author intend the story's genre. As I flipped the pages of the book, there were two genres that came to my mind.
First genre: Thriller
The book that Autumn picked could trace it's origin to an ancient civilization.
Second genre: Adventure.
The story could have been an adventure story wherein she could have been a heroine.
Third story: Romance
The two main characters could have a more complex background story that resonates with each other's missing pieces.

It's a short story. I enjoyed it and finished it in a couple days the ending definitely peaked ny intrest and hope to read the second soon. It's kind of like a book in a book. I loved the characters and the descriptions definitely make it easy to picture it in your mind. Just wish it was maybe a little faster paced but was a good book all together. I recieved a advance review copy for free but am leaving this review because I genuinely liked the book.

As an ARC reader (and someone who can never resist a story centered around a bookstore), Autumn in Charleston felt like wrapping up in a cozy blanket with a warm cup of tea. If Hallmark movies and independent bookstores had a literary baby, this would be it.
The setting was one of my favorite parts. Charleston is beautifully described, and Whitmore Books is exactly the kind of place I’d happily lose an entire afternoon wandering through. The story focuses on family, friendship, community, and finding hope in unexpected places, which gives it a comforting, feel-good atmosphere.
Autumn is easy to root for, and I enjoyed watching her journey unfold after one mysterious book changes the direction of her life. The Whitmore family has plenty of heart, and by the end of the novel I felt like I knew them well enough to want to visit again in the next book.
This isn’t a novel packed with dramatic twists or edge-of-your-seat suspense—and I don’t think it’s trying to be. It’s a slower, character-driven story that takes its time building relationships. If you’re expecting nonstop action, this may not be your style. But if you enjoy heartfelt stories that let the characters shine, you’ll likely feel right at home.
One small piece of feedback would be to tighten a few of the slower scenes to keep the story moving and deepen some of the emotional moments even further. The foundation is wonderful, and I think a bit more tension in places would make the heartfelt scenes even more memorable.
Overall, this was a sweet, comforting start to what promises to be an enjoyable family saga. I closed the book feeling relaxed, hopeful, and curious about where the Whitmore family will go next—and that’s exactly what I want from the first book in a series.

Jane hides a book for review to Autumn. Brooke is a close nephew to Jane who stays in contact. What happens next is the story. You will feel for all the characters involved. The story is all about friends, unexpected potential love, a book and how it all mingles the characters together to a loving end.
If you want to read a nice cozy story, not to long, easy read give this one a go.

I absolutely loved this book. The story hooks you early on, just enough intrigue and the build up between Auntumn and Brooks is superb.
The characters are perfect, the focus remains on them, while the others helpnset the scene and build the characters.. The descriptions of Charlston were vivid, it makes you want to book a flight!!

The book was beautiful, the bookstore atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the addition of the basset hound was the perfect addition to the story. I think this book is perfect for anyone who loves Hallmark style stories.

The first book in the Whitmore Family series by Ann Morrison, it’s a short, sweet romance between the titular character, Autumn, and Brooks, the nephew of her best friend, a librarian named Jane that recalls fairy godmothers of old.
While the premise is intriguing and I started with wanting to know more, the storyline per se felt like it lacked depth, there were additions that brought nowhere, and the misunderstanding between Autumn and Brooks was so minimal that it could have probably been resolved in five minutes rather than 200 pages. And yet…
Ann Morrison’s style of writing felt like a warm blanket on a rainy day, soothing, calming, heartwarming. Wow what a beautiful story!
A book within a book and it was amazing. I would so love to read the book by Brooks. I'm a big fan of historical fiction and anything to do with WWII.
Of course, the title Autumn in Charleston had me intrigued right from the start. My husband and I visited Charleston many, many moons ago and I fell in love with the city. We only had a day there, but we did a carriage ride, and one was taken in the book.
The characters are well thought out with backgrounds given out to understand the characters more. I associate with Jane because I have always wanted to work/own a bookstore and live above it.
The story was fresh and delightful. Again, intrigued by the storyline and how Autumn came about reading a book she had no clue about. No authors name but fell into the story and it really made an impact with Autumn.

A book within a book and it was amazing. I would so love to read the book by Brooks. I'm a big fan of historical fiction and anything to do with WWII.
Of course, the title Autumn in Charleston had me intrigued right from the start. My husband and I visited Charleston many, many moons ago and I fell in love with the city. We only had a day there, but we did a carriage ride, and one was taken in the book.
The characters are well thought out with backgrounds given out to understand the characters more. I associate with Jane because I have always wanted to work/own a bookstore and live above it.

Autumn in Charleston is just the beginning of a series. It is a clean sweet romance about an author, book store and readers. Secrets between the characters throughout the book add intrigue. The HEA ending is sweet and it sets you up for the next book in the series. Thank you for the ARC.
