From the voice behind Ren, Stimpy, Doug, Bugs Bunny, nearly half the main Futurama characters, and much more, a revealing memoir of life before—and in front of—the mic

Billy West is one the most accomplished and beloved voice actors alive today. He's brought to life original animated characters like Stimpy from The Ren & Stimpy Show, Doug Funnie, and Philip J. Fry, Dr. Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan, and Professor Farnsworth (and more) on Futurama. And he's played iconic characters like Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in Space Jam, Popeye, and Woody Woodpecker.

Chances are, he's made you laugh many times. You might even know some of his lines by heart.

In Voice-A-Versa, West recounts his remarkable life in show business and the circuitous route that got him there, from a radio-call in contest that led to skits on morning radio in Boston, to a one-off appearance on The Howard Stern Show that turned into a regular role, to a big move to Hollywood, and legendary roles working with other talented creators.

But West's life story is deeper and darker than that, and this memoir will reveal the traumatic upbringing that scarred and shaped him, and which gave birth to the "Billy-verse" of voices.

“Billy West is the kind of genius you have to write about in the plural. He’s not just a brilliant actor, he’s a hundred brilliant actors. And this hilarious book will give you the lowdown on Billy’s wild lives and unforgettable voices, and how those fevered brains of his crack us all up.”—MATT GROENING

I traditionally love memoirs from comedians, and as a big fan of Futurama, I knew I had to give the Billy West audiobook a listen!

It’s incredibly impressive how much tragedy he pushed through to achieve what he’s done today. It was remarkable to hear about his long career, from music to radio to voice acting and everything in-between and beyond.

I also think an audiobook was the perfect format for this. Billy West brought a combination of conversationalism and his epic voice acting skills. Definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan of Billy West’s voice acting, or the craft in general!

Thanks to Billy West, RBmedia, and NetGalley for the audio ARC!

I grew up on Nicktoons and other cartoon shows, so when I saw Billy West had a book, I knew I had to read it! I didn't previously know Billy's backstory, but wow, what a rags to riches tale. Billy endured so many hardships growing up in an abusive household, and like many comedic greats, he was able to escape through humor and music. I enjoyed Billy's stories about all the bands and musicians he met and became friends with, including Aerosmith. I really had no idea Billy had voiced other great films and tv shows that I loved like Space Jam and Tiny Toons. I was a huge Ren & Stimpy and Doug fan, and then later Futurama. Billy mentions how he and Seth MacFarlane were supposed to be on one of the September 11 planes, and I can't imagine how that must feel to know you dodged something like that. This book was so enjoyable, and I really appreciate how positive of a person Billy seems despite all the traumatic events he experienced. Also, he didn't lack accountability in knowing the situations he caused and realizing he needed to change. He also talks about some health scares, which will hopefully help someone out one day who is too embarrassed to go to the doctor.

My thanks to NetGalley and Abrams Press for an advance copy of this new biography about a man whose early days were like something out of Dickens, a man who has overcome so much, but whose travails have honed his voice, his humor in such a way, that despite all the odds, has brought joy and love to so many people.

Juliana Hatfield once sang "Beauty can be sad/ You're proof of that." Which can also be said about humor. Most of the funniest people I have known were sad in different ways. As a kid it was easier to laugh when people pointed out my weight, my glasses, my lack of interest in anything like sports. We all deal with things in different ways. Many give up. Especially when nothing seems to go right. When one seems stuck in an infinite loop of failed adults, crushed hopes and little in the way of dreams. However if one can laugh, sometimes this makes the pain less. If one can make others laugh, well that's another step in the right direction. And if one has the skill to imitate voices, to bring joy to so many, one might even find contentment, and peace. As the author of this book has. Voice-A-Versa: Finding My Voice(s) Behind the Mic is by Billy West known as the man who brought so many childhood characters to life, a musician, a writer, a comedian, and more importantly a survivor.

Billy West was born in Detroit to a Mom who always loved and supported him, and a father who gave up on life before Billy was born. Billy's father was an angry man, an alcoholic quick to hit his wife, his kids, and others. A man full of hate who slashed tires, burned lawns of neighbors, and never kept a real job. Billy was a child with a lot of energy, little in the way of attention, and the constant fear of his father made life almost unbearable. Even escaping with his mother and brothers didn't help, the damage had been done. Billy could hear sound different, able to imitate voices, even play instruments by ear more than by learning. Music was important, but the music lifestyle began to wear at him, the drinking the drugs, the looking like his father. His voice saved him, getting him a job on radio. Radio saved him by getting him into rehab. Moving to New York opened him to more opportunities. Howard Stern, Doug, Ren and Stimpy. Being an M&M. And finally Futurama, with some looney tunes, and some looney tales along the way.

Not the book I expected. I thought it would be a fun story about animation and voice acting. Instead it is a very sad book about a child who was failed by almost everyone around him. Those that reached out saved him, and made him the entertainer he is today. One who has made me smile quite a lot, especially Futurama. This is a very well written book, full of sad moments lots of abuse, physical, mental, and sexual, told with remorse, but not much anger. Except for a few people. West tells a lot of funny stories later in the book, meetings with rich, the powerful, and the weird. Very weird in some places. One gets a real sense of how he worked to create his own way of just getting through life, and how this skill has brought so much to so many. Healing West in many ways.

A really well done book, with a bit of humor, a bit of sadness, well a lot of sadness, but a lot of hey look how life can change. Again told without anger, but from a place of self-love. Something West seemed to lack for so long, and something I am glad he found.

Thank you to NetGalley and RBMedia for providing me with an advanced listening copy of Voice-A-Versa by Billy West.

I've been a fan of Billy West for more than 30 years and even had the pleasure of meeting him a little over a decade ago, so this memoir immediately caught my attention.

I will say right away that it wasn't the book I expected. If you're looking for a lighthearted behind-the-scenes look at the career of one of animation's funniest performers, this isn't that book.

This memoir comes with some heavy content. Readers who have experienced childhood abuse, assault, addiction, or other forms of trauma should be aware that Billy recounts those experiences in unflinching detail.

What makes Voice-A-Versa so compelling is that Billy isn't simply telling his life story, he's opening up his soul. He shares the good, the bad, and the ugly without trying to sanitize his past or excuse his mistakes. That honesty gives the book an emotional weight that surprised me.

It's also clear why he's willing to be so vulnerable. This isn't trauma for trauma's sake. Billy wants people who are struggling, who feel trapped by abuse, addiction, or the choices they've made, to know there is hope. His story is proof that your past doesn't have to define your future.

Throughout the book, you also get a deeper understanding of how Billy's mind works. He isn't just an incredibly talented voice actor, he's someone who constantly asks "what if?" and finds creativity, perspective, and often gallows humor even in life's darkest moments.

What stood out to me most, however, was his gratitude. Billy has a genuine appreciation for the entertainment industry and a deep respect for the people who helped shape his career. He speaks warmly about so many of the people he's worked alongside, and that generosity of spirit comes through on every page.

Considering everything he's endured, it's remarkable that his overwhelming desire is still to bring joy into the world and make people laugh.

If you're a fan of Billy West's work, I think you'll come away with an even greater appreciation for him both as an actor and as a human being. Voice-A-Versa is one of my favorite reads this year.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

I am somewhat familiar with Billy West’s work- my husband is a lifelong Futurama fan, and it was one of the first shows we watched together in full. Billy’s talent in said show is undeniable- he comes across as genuine, talented, and, of course, uproariously funny (particularly in the audio commentaries!). I was a kid raised on Space Jam, however, and it is so lovely to put a person to the voice for Bugs!

This book was an eye-opening insight into the mind if a man who clearly faced more than his fair share of adversity. A lot of his childhood was relayed with him wearing his heart on his sleeve in this book, and I found myself empathising more than I anticipated (must be something in the water that makes for a particularly bad type of father!).

Throughout all the horrible things he endured, you see a man who is clearly still passionate and keeps his chin up, even when it’s tough. I think the context of his childhood and wanting to bring laughter even when it is so difficult to smile yourself is so admirable, even if it is painful.

His later life I found equally interesting, from his insights regarding radio and Hollywood as a whole. I did hope for a little more context around his later years and career, but that’s really my only criticism.

Billy’s commentary at the end about breaking into voice acting and how to best go about it was really lovely too, and I just think above all else this book illustrates how sweet of a man he is. Well worth the read for anyone even remotely interested in understanding the fascinating craft of voice acting, and one of the vocal greats of our time!

I have been a fan of Billy West since childhood and watching the shows he voiced at the time with “Ren & Stimpy” and “Doug”. I’m also a big fan of Futurama which is still going. I’ve seen Billy West at a panel at a comicon once, and I enjoyed hearing him talk about the industry he works in, so I was stoked when I got approved to read this book early.

It’s always hard to rate an autobiography because how do you quantify entertainment value in someone's life story? But at the same time all books, even autobiographies/memoirs depend on star ratings to help move a book forward. I feel that Billy was honest and brave to tell his story in the way that he did. He had a hard life growing up and he expressed it in a way that helped the reader empathize with him, but it didn’t seem like he was telling these stories to get empathy. It seemed more like he was just letting the reader know the upbringing he was raised in and in turn that might inspire others in similar scenarios.

I enjoyed reading about Billy’s rise in the voice-acting industry. I’ve always found that world fascinating so it’s great to hear the POV of one of the GOATs of voice-acting. If you’re a fan of Billy West’s work, or if you’re interested in the world of voice-acting then I highly recommend this book. It was well done and I’m glad I was able to read it.

Thank you, NetGalley and Abrams Press for allowing me to read this early. The opinion in this review is my own.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me this book to read and review before it's officially published.

I knew his voice primarily from the show, Futurerama, so, yeah, when I saw this book, I was intrigued.

Billy's childhood was very rough as he was physically and sexually abused. His dad was a drunk, and the primary influencer of being physical with his son (and siblings, and their mom).

Well, Billy overcame it and became very successful as a musician and a voice over actor. Oh, he has been sober for a long time and he also survived a cancer diagnosis.

I had no clue Billy West was a guitar player and got to play and meet some of his heroes (Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck). I have another not yet published biography about Jeff Beck from Netgalley that I want to read.

I had no clue he got started in the early days of Howard Stern as a featured voice performer.

As a voice over artist, he started slow and eventually ended up meeting people in the industry, and kept improving his repertoire of voices. If your'e curious, google him to see everything he has voiced because it's a lot.

Of course, there are a lot of funny stories from the trenches (and he does give lots of praise and thanks to many other voice over artists and people who helped him along the way).

Overall, I enjoyed the book.

Writing a review for a memoir is so hard, but I really admire Billy West, so I wanted to give this one a go. I always think I want to read memoirs, then once I get into them, I rarely enjoy them the way I think I will, so take this review with a grain of salt.

Billy's upbringing was very difficult, and he does not shy away from telling the truth, and that must've taken a lot of courage. I appreciate him bringing child abuse into the light. He also spoke openly about his past addictions and various health issues, which is very admirable. He has worked with or hung out with many very talented people, some very famous, some famous only in certain circles, and he shared interesting stories about them. He had a lot of flattering things to say about most of them and threw shade on a few. I learned a lot about his life that I was not aware of, like his time playing guitar in bands. Having said all this, my chief issue with the book was the writing itself. Billy is an extremely talented person, but I don't believe writing is his forte. A little help from a professional writer would have made this book more engaging. If you're a fan, this is still recommended reading.

Thanks to NetGalley, Abrams Press, and Billy West for an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Voice-a-Versa was an unexpectedly moving history from a great voice actor who's been a part of many of my favourite shows, most notably Futurama. I was expecting a light-hearted romp with some funny stories about the entertainment industry. Instead, I got an inspiring story of how Billy overcame the horrors his abusive father inflicted on him, and the challenges of neurodiversity, alcoholism, and addiction. His heartbreaking childhood stories are evocative and capture a broken innocence that makes you wonder how people could be so cruel. it's amazing that, from such a beginning, he managed to find his niche, and create characters that are so beloved.

The audiobook version of this is a must, for the impressions and character voices.

Billy West breaks all the rules I have for what I like in a memoir and it's one of the best I've ever listened to. Of course I'm a fan of his voice work but he's so intelligent and interesting and he's been through so much.
There's a lot about his childhood, people he's known, his relationships with people... Billy West has amazing empathy to be able to understand people so well. But he's also very funny and his performance as a narrator is a rare treat.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this

I loved this one. It’s a lot, heavier than I expected, but worth the read.

Billy went through hell. Most of it not his doing, some of it was though, but it seems reactionary. The abuse he suffered is horrific, but when you get through the book, you can see what a good guy he is. He made himself and he’s seriously awesome.

I recommend this book to everyone.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and RBmedia for letting me listen to this ALC. Billy West is one of my favorite voice actors! His voices in Doug and Futurama are major influences on my young and adult lives. Listening to him read his memoir was absolutely amazing. Listening to his story of overcoming obstacles in his youth and face a troubling early adulthood, to be followed by an amazing career as a voice actors was a real inspiration. I highly recommend the listen!

Definitely listen to the audio version. He is an incredibly honest voice, and clearly wants to help those with similar trauma. It is not always linear. He goes back and forth a lot. He has a lot of nice things to say about the people he has worked with, and sometimes it was a distraction from his own story.
