When Jessica’s animal shelter is threatened by the new building owner, handsome and wealthy Eric Slaughter, she will do anything she can to save the animals. But putting up with Eric’s arrogance, and her own stubborn attraction to him, is a bigger challenge than she thought. She may be able to save the shelter, but will her heart be broken in the process?
The Rescue is a light and fun new adult novel with steamy sex scenes and lovable characters. It's a stand-alone novel intended for mature audiences.
I am going to attempt to explain why “The Rescue” is my very favorite type of book. Jessica, the protagonist, works in an animal rescue shelter, and wants to become a veterinarian. She is smart and loveable, and is essentially the darling of the small town she lives in, with its varied and interesting inhabitants her surrogate family. So, she is smart, but vulnerable. She is realistic, but has a soft side. She’s no fool but she wants to believe in her feelings. And she has an adorable side-kick dog named Banjo. I am on board with her as a character. She has a best friend who is a sex-psychic. I am so intrigued. They quote the Sound of Music to each other. I am loving this. Eric, the love interest, is hot but a, uh, “curmudgeon,” to use the characters’ words, and set out to destroy the animal shelter that Jessica has devoted her life to. He’s complicated and not easy to like at first, but as the reader, you feel the same strange attraction that Jessica feels. It’s confusing and irresistible. I’m sold. Better written than it needs to be, with a solid story, totally freaking hot sex scenes, and characters who genuinely learn and grow, I just loved this book. Check it out!
Maria Monroe writes sexy, witty and fun romances that hook you hard and keep you reading until the end.
In The Rescue, the heroine, after getting some terrible news about the future of the building that houses her pet shelter, seeks temporary oblivion in the arms of a sexy, dark stranger.
Little does she know of his connection to her business woes, or of the powerful attraction that will keep the two of them connected even as their relationship becomes increasingly complex.
Sexy, and full of witty banter and memorable characters.
I loved this story, it was sweet, romantic, arousing with a little bit of spice thrown in. Eric rocked my world right from the start! He was all alpha with his arrogance, delicious body, charm, and his commanding presence in the bedroom. Jessica could not deny that she wanted a piece of that action even when she considered him her enemy. I fell in love with the sleepy, college town and all the residents that lived there. This book is sure to cause sensory overload and a melting heart all at the same time.
Jessica runs an animal shelter and finds out they're being evicted with little notice and nowhere to go.
She goes to the town bar to blow off steam, sees a hottie she's never seen before and thinks he'd make perfect one night stand. There's definitely an intense attraction, but we eventually find out Eric's the one who's evicting them, so there's no one night stand.
To convince him to keep the shelter open, she gives him a tour, and a presentation and the chemistry is off the charts until finally she agrees to have dinner with him which turns into super sexy times which shows he's a bit of a dominant side. The sexy times with them are off the charts and include outdoor sex and light spanking in addition to the vanilla times.
They do get to know each other a bit, but even at the end of this book I still felt like he was an enigma... and I had so many questions.... about this businesses, his woodworking hobby, his relationships with the divorced parents.
************* spoilers ********************* So the drama that's created is because they're so into each other that they don't stop to talk, just have sex... and clearly that's working out for them and he promises not to evict them. Then one day he has to go away unexpectedly and yet she's told by the local police that she still must leave because Eric never called off the demolition crew. The place is demolished with the whole town witnessing it while she sits in a park and cries. It's quite sad, really.
So she's hurt and feels betrayed. The rest of it is him making it up to her because understandably she's distrusting of anything he says. There are lots of flowers and a rebuilding of the shelter.
And in least romantic way the I love you's are shared.... and it was pretty disappointing. There's an HEA for those of us who need it.
I am a reader. I don't apologize for that. It's what I am. I'm other things, as well, but it is what I am. I started reading this book, and it bothered me, not in a good way, so I put it down. I loved the people in the town, how everyone obviously cared about each other and, of course, Banjo, so I started reading it again. It bothered me again, and I put it down. I don't like to leave a book undone, so I finished it this morning. (Of course, I read four other books in the midst of reading this one, but that's just me.) I am glad that I finished, and in some ways, I am glad that it's over. Maybe it's because I am a reader, but I think it bothered me more because I am also a professional proofreader and copy-editor, I think it needs a hard edit. It's choppy and rough in places, like how the heroine is choppy and rough. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I think with a hard edit, this book could be incredible.
Wow I fell in love with the little town of Deerfield, it sounds like the perfect place! Not only am I glad Eric came back to work things out with Jessica it was heartwarming to read Ruth and Sal and Christa and Martin find love!!! I know you want more but you will have get the book!!!
Cute, but could have done without the BDSM elements
This is a cute story told in first person POV. The heroine is likeable and, at around 25 years old, probably more experienced than I at age 49. Anyway, the plot is predictable even if the journey is enjoyable. I would have preferred the sex scenes without the light BDSM flavoring, but that's just my opinion.
4 " Eric baby" Stars!! I always love a book when you lust first then fall in love. He stared at me for a second as if considering something and then bent his head so he was licking my nipple , flicking it with his tongue until I was breathing hard. Suddenly , he grasped it with his teeth and bit down, just enough so it was a perfect mix of pain and ecstasy. " Oh," I gasped. " Baby , " said Eric, bringing his head back up and kissing me, " we`re going to have so much fun getting to know each other." Yea Eric was very sexy!! :)
