Delving for hidden truths has consequences. The Apocalypse has arrived. Again.
Kaius has done the escaped the Great Depths alive, forged an unbreakable brotherhood with Porkchop, and claimed a Heroic Class. But his growing strength, the forbidden secrets behind his Legacy Skills, and never-before earned Honours have awakened ancient System protocols.
Porkchop and Kaius emerge into a world overrun by newly born beasts and teetering on the edge of catastrophe. With his father’s fate unknown, enemies hunting his secrets, and reality itself beginning to shift, Kaius must master his new runic magic, decide which allies he can trust, and find a place he can grow strong enough to stand on his own.
His path brings him to the remote city of Deadacre, an overlooked backwater that is home to the Delver’s Guild. Kaius knows strength alone won't be enough. Not all problems can be solved with steel or spell, and he has a lot to learn if he is to have any hope of reaching the Second Tier.
When the threats are evolving faster than you are, survival means becoming something the world has never seen.
Lots of books start off great in book one. Have a lot of hooks, new things and interests. It's book 2 where they are really put to the test. If they can stay interesting and keep the pace. This one did that. Greatly. This is one of new favorite series so far.
I will also say I had feared that the whole looking for a team thing in the first book would lead to this book having some random hottie show up and join the team to make it all about relationships. While I still fear that being a thing in book 3. At least in this book, the first hot girl he meets and talks to cliche didn't happen.
One can't really go into what did happen without spoilers but it was a decent mix of character growth, learning, training and action missions. I will say that they aren't instantly great, or instantly learn to be. The author has them make mistakes, has those mistakes pointed out, and has them learn. Most the time in these books even if the characters make mistakes, no one notices or points it out. It's just self improvement. Not true, you messed up, this is how. This book does that, and it's quite refreshing. I can't wait for the next one. I'll also say that the narrator for the audible books did a great job again. The voices are all different and the female ones are feminine enough. Not like some narrators who you can't tell who is who, or who is female or male.
Very good continuation of the story, expanding the world and the lore. Good introductions to new members of the MC's party and to new mentors. Introductions to the wider world and its dangers and pitfuls that flowed naturally and were very well done. Good growth in both levels, skills and personality.
I enjoyed the first book but thought this one even better. More plot variety, much more world building, and still lots of great action and progression. I also like the expanded team.
I was hoping this book would be better than the first one. There were some good spots but I feel like the book is drafting the last half on the book. This will be a dnf.
