Holy moly. Jacob Peppers, whoever you are, you just got yourself a brand new fangirl. What an incredible ride this book was from start to finish! I am breathless at what I just read. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen the sweeping epic fantasy (with dragons!) and I am here for it! This was magnificent!

We start out with Nolan, an orphan on the streets of Astria, forced to steal to survive in an occupied land. Stealing from the wrong man, or in this case, governor leads him down a path he never saw coming. On the run and paired with unlikely and strange allies, Nolan has to decide if revenge is what fuels him, or the chance for a future.

I was absolutely ENTHRALLED with this book. We went from street urchin with a very large, and lovable dog trying to pull off a heist, to a journey across the land to find answers and refuge, to a monastery academy setting to FREAKING DRAGONS. When I tell you all of this is seamless, you’d best believe it. Everything from Nolan’s journey - about his motivations, about his past, about his future is beautifully woven into the story. A story that moves about a mile a minute, by the way. The way Peppers deals with the futility of being in an occupied land and the question of fighting to survive or fighting for what is right is poignant and relatable. Nolan has been dealt a terrible hand in life, seeing him try to make the choices that can bring about a true change for him warmed my heart. Understanding who he was and what he could be, it was perfection.

Shadow of Dragons comes out August 4 and I highly recommend snagging a copy of this one from your favorite book retailer or library. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Nolan.

Shadow of Dragons pulled me in almost immediately. The world-building was one of my favorite parts—it felt detailed without being overwhelming, and I loved discovering more about the magic, dragons, and the history of the world alongside Nolan. His journey of uncovering who he is while trying to protect his people kept me invested from beginning to end.

The pacing is fast, so there was always something happening, and I never felt tempted to put it down. There were plenty of action-packed moments, but I also appreciated the quieter scenes that helped build the characters and their relationships. The found family elements were another highlight for me.

The audiobook was well done and made it easy to stay immersed in the story. The narration fit the tone of the book and brought the action and emotional moments to life.

The ending definitely left me wanting more, and I’m already looking forward to continuing the series. If you’re a fan of epic fantasy with dragons, strong world-building, and a fast-paced adventure, this is one I’d recommend.

This is an arc for the first book in Of Frost and Flame by Jacob Peppers, Shadow of Dragons. I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Kevin Shen. I would like to thank Bookouture Audio for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This is a fantasy adventure tale featuring an orphan boy, Nolan, who cannot remember his life before a young age, his dog, named Mutt, a one-eyed former guard and the guards daughter. It is written in third person, completely in a linear fashion, without the reader knowing anything that is occurring outside the purview of the MMC Nolan.

I did enjoy the action in this book and it had a steady pace. Other than the sound getting muffled a few times, and a couple of the voices being too "squeally" and sounding almost identical, the narrator did a good job. His pace was steady and his inflections were on point.

I feel that the world building for this book could have been stronger. We only know about two groups of people in the story, the good Astrians, and their evil Imperial oppressors. We never find out how the land is laid out and are usually only given cardinal directions for our travelers.

As for the characters, every lowborn Astrian is a great person. Every noble Astrian is a jerk. With the exception of one character, all the people on the opposing side we meet look down upon the Astrians and are complete snobs. In reality, no group is ever totally good or totally bad. There are always exceptions, but not in this book. I wish everything in this was not so black and white. The evil ice wardens and their pets make cool bad guys, and the mention of ancient dragons got me excited, but there wasn't enough of either in the book.

I did not hate this book, but I did not love it either. I will not be recommending this book and will not be reading book two in the series. I have read many good reviews for this book, so if you are reading this review, please do not just take my word for it. Read other reviews and decide for yourself. Who knows? It may be for you!

This is definitely an unpopular opinion when I look at all the 5 star reviews. Here we go...

I love dragon rider books and the premise was really promising! Unfortunately, my expectation took a nosedive fairly early in the story.

The MMC Nolan is descendant of a previously proud nation where people rode dragons, but it fell to a neighbouring country with diametrically opposed magic, and was subjugated for hundreds of years. The invaders are definitely fierce, violent and have terrifying powers, but they are comically portrayed with several descriptions of having their noses "high in the sky" or other such descriptions with their nose in a skyward direction when showing distain for their lessers.

Nolan and Serah, who I expect to be the love interest, were bland and annoying. They both had a total lack of empathy for the other which made me want to shake both of them. I had a hard time reading the book and it was only the last 25% I actually enjoyed. There were some events sprinkled in that caught my interest but when they were over I got annoyed again.

Another thing that had me shaking my tablet in frustration was characters acting like they had all the time in the world when they really really didn't. I.e.:
Person of authority: "Get out of here!"
Minor side character: "What should we do?"
MMC: *Thinking, mulling over potential other actions, considering consequences, conclusion*: "Let's get out of here."

Nolan and Serah also bickered at the smallest inconvenience while they were in great danger. Seriously, get to a safe place before you start bickering for the umpteenth time!

The writing was also a point of frustration for me since it can really ruin a book for me. If it was a debut novel I would give the author grace but it is not.

First of all thank you to Netgalley and Second Sky for sending me an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

To be honest i found this book totally randomly and was immediatly interested when I saw that people who liked John Gwynne, Ryan Cahill and Pierce Brown might enjoy it. Thus since the three happens to be my favorites authors I had to give it a try and spoiler, it was really good !

In the start of the book we follow Nolan, an orphan who survive as a thief by stealing his meals and other necessities. After a turn of events he finds himself embarking on a journey with a father and his daughter.

The plot is rather simple with journey type storyline and the action almost non-stop which keep the reader engaged at all time. Our main character Nolan, after the first couple of chapters is easy to like and roots for, he is an cynical orphan on the path of revenge and does his best to survive. Across his journey Nolan meets many characters but the most important ones, Serah and Liem are lovable and interesting in the secrets they hide. In term of world building, I found the first two chapters to be a little info dumpy but quickly after that, the elements were brought up much more naturally and where aligned with the progression of the story. I particularly liked the places our characters visited along their expedition such as the barrens of sorrows or the monastery.

Moreover I'll just add that this novel read as more young-adult than adult in my opinion due to the dialogues and characters.

So to conclude, Shadow of dragons by Jacob Peppers is a fast-paced, fun and interesting first installment, which I recommend for someone looking for a classic-ish fantasy adventure or even as an introduction to the genre.

Shadow of Dragons, being the first book in a series, is heavily character and world building heavy. The characters are on a journey for a majority of the story and while this meant that the plot was slower, I was never bored. A couple of the main characters were a bit on the annoying side because they were portrayed as bitter and angry about their life. It is an understandable characteristic under the circumstances, but it was sometimes difficult to tolerate. I often wanted to reach into the story and slap some sense into them. Some of the side characters really shine. There is one in particular, that while she played a relatively small part in this book, I think she's going to be more integral later. At least I hope so because she has "favorite character" written all over her.

I like the writing style and prose. Its not lyrical, yet not simplistic. It reminds me a bit of DragonLance storytelling. If you're curious about tropes, the ones that stand out to me are:

found family
reluctant hero
chosen one (at least I think that is where this is going)
budding relationship
older mentor
dystopian society

The audiobook:
I didn't think the narrator was great, but he got better over time. He started out emphasizing too many words in every sentence and it took away from the flow. He continues to do it throughout the book, but it is significantly less in later chapters.

I really enjoyed this book and I hope I don't have to wait a long time for the next installment in the series!

This was my first cover read of the year. As in, I had no clue what the story was about, but I was in a slump and wanted (desperately needed) a surprise.

After robbing the wrong person, with a legion of imperial soldiers closing in, Nolan is saved by a mysterious swordsman and his sharp-witted daughter.
Sound familiar? Like the plot of many fantasy books?

This was predictable if you’ve read your fair share of fantasy books, however the author’s voice makes this, if not unique, refreshing and fun.

There are Frostwardens and magic and a hound as a companion called Mutt (original, right?). Whilst perhaps not immersive or atmospheric, it was fast-paced and witty. 

"This monastery—you’re trying to kill Peralaxans?" 
The other man met his gaze. "We are trying to save Astrians." 
“There a difference?" 
Liem nodded slowly. "There has to be."

I initially thought this was the author’s debut due to his writing style and certain quirks. If you ever tried your hand at writing and used to scour the web for prompts and found yourself on Pinterest, you’ll recognise a few trite phrases. 

Maybe this is why this book pulled me out of a funk - I flew through it. It was nostalgic whilst feeling new and just unique enough that I was entertained. 

This seems like a back-handed complimentary review. I think there’s potential here and, like I said, I vibed with the protagonist’s cynical, snarky voice and I needed something familiar.

Going into Shadow of Dragons, I was ready for a darker epic about an oppressed people and dragon riders, but it ended up feeling much more like a middle grade adventure to me (nothing wrong with that, just now what I was expecting).

The Astrians are described as “born in chains,” yet what I mostly felt on the page was poverty and mistreatment rather than the kind of visceral enslavement that phrase made me expect, so the world never got quite as heavy as I thought it would.

Even so, I did find the story entertaining and there were some twists and quieter character moments I really enjoyed. Nolan starts off as a pretty frustrating narrator for me, very focused on how hard his life has been, repeating it and complaining a lot, but as the journey goes on, he settles into the role more and becomes easier to root for. I liked the found family feel with Liem, Serah, and Nolan’s dog, and the whole “orphan thief pulled into something bigger” arc has a fun, familiar charm.

In the end, this was a solid three star read: not exactly the gritty epic I was hoping for, but still a fast, accessible fantasy with a chosen one vibe, adventure, and friendship at its core. If you enjoy middle grade leaning fantasy and found family, I think you could really enjoy this one. And I will say, I’m curious enough about where the story is headed that I’ll be picking up the next book. I think what's coming is closer to what I was expecting with this one.

This book was my introduction to Jacob Peppers’ work and can I tell you, I have become a total fan! Shadow of Dragons has everything you need from a fantasy novel: immersive world building, heart-pounding adventure, solid characters and epic scope for the series to expand.

Our MMC is Nolan, a lowly Astrian with a past shrouded in fire and smoke. His people were once proud and elevated rulers of their land, who fought alongside dragons but were conquered by the brutal Peralaxans. Nolan’s entire existence has revolved around staying alive in a world where for him, nothing is guaranteed.

Nolan and his canine companion, Mutt, find themselves in an unlikely alliance with two strangers and a mob of bloodthirsty soldiers at their heels. The epic storytelling, supporting characters and edge-of-your-seat action is what absolutely makes this book brilliant.

I loved witnessing Nolan’s character evolve and I can’t wait to read the second instalment for this series. I also NEED a map because the land of Astria is so freaking cool.

Nolan is on the run with a mysterious one-eyed man and his daughter after a heist goes bad and Nolan's secret is exposed. In a realm where the conquerors rule the conquered and mistreat them, Nolan is full of rage and a thirst for revenge. He finds so much more meaning in life than that and discovers things about himself along the way - things he had long forgotten.

Nolan is an intriguing character, and despite how angry he is all the time, his anger makes sense and doesn't make him less likeable. It helps that he grows as a person and is open-minded. I do like how his relationship with Serah and Liem unfolds throughout the novel. I enjoyed the slow reveal of what everything meant and how, for a lot of the novel, we were just building relationships. I also love found family!

For some reason, I was expecting something a little grittier and bloodier, along the lines of John Gwynne, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy myself. I will 100% be keeping my eye out for the next one and recommend anyone that enjoys epic fantasy and reluctant heroes take a peek at this new series.

It feels sort of like the same vibes I got from the first Green Rider book by Kristin Britain, even though the stories are wildly different.

Shadow of Dragons follows Nolan, an orphan who has been using his wits to survive with his dog Mutt beside him. One day he upsets the wrong person and his secret is revealed, forcing him to flee with Liem and his daughter Serah.

I found Nolan to be quite an angry character, but that’s understandable given his background, however as the story progresses his character develops. The characters of Liem and Serah also reveal more and add to the plot progression, however this is mostly towards the later end of the book. I really liked the world building and learning how the ruling/power of the world is, and how this all came to be with the dragons.

I thought there would be more dragons in the book, but I think this will come in the next book and later in the series.

The author has done a great job with this book, I was a little disappointed how it ended at such a good part but then this is the first book in a series. It’s not a really heavy epic-fantasy some people might be intimidated to read, you don’t need to read-read glossaries or maps to follow along.

Would definitely recommend and will be reading some of his other work while I wait for the next book!

Shadow of Dragons was an interesting, one-track, fast-paced read.

The writing didn't particularly work for me because it’s focused almost entirely on action. I always knew what was happening, and I could visualize every scene without any problem, but I never got any emotional depth from the story. Most of what I got from Nolan was him complaining about how hard his life is.

My biggest issue is that I finished the book without feeling like I actually knew the main character. I know what happened to him, but I don’t really know him. His motivations, fears, desires, or what truly drives him never felt explored enough for me to connect with him emotionally.

That said, it’s still a quick and easy read. Mutt, the dog, along with Liem and his daughter Serah, ended up being the heart of the story for me. Their found family dynamic brought the warmth and emotional connection I was missing elsewhere, and honestly, they were what kept me invested.

It’s alway a bummer to give an ALC or an ARC a lower rating because honestly I am just so grateful I was even given the opportunity to receive an early copy. Unfortunately, this is one of those instances where the book just didn’t quite land for me.

Shadow of Dragons is an epic fantasy that is fairly fast paced. If it wasn’t for the quick pacing I don’t think I would have been able to get through to the end. This book is not marketed as YA but it seemed very YA especially in the dialogue between characters. The dialogue left something to be desired and I really didn’t care for any of the characters. The world building was also a let down and everything in this world is too black or white. There is no gray area. Either you’re the evil people or the good people. I did listen to the audiobook and I didn’t care much for the narrator either. Not enough differences in voices and the narrator made the dialogue sound even more whiny. Overall I didnt enjoy this and won’t be continuing. I think this would be much better suited for a younger audience.

I read this book fairly quickly. I was leaning toward a 3 star review, but it became clear to me that it was intended for a younger audience, so in that context, four stars.

The storyline demonstrates a fine imagination and is well written. Character development is very good, so that you do feel you know the main characters, even through the inevitable twists and turns towards the end.

Irritations for me as an adult? Some scenes drag on way too long, e.g. the initial "will he or won't he go?" scene in the woods. I found several scenarios in the book a bit dull. Also the excessive use of "hiss", as in "he/she hissed" which is unusual. Also over-doing the s-s-stuttering when it's cold.....kind of grasp that it's cold without the stuttering, thanks!

A quick & enjoyable read, but I think it's aimed more at a teen audience.

What a fantastic start to a new epic fantasy series! From the opening chapters, I was completely immersed in the story. Jacob Peppers continued to impress with his rich world-building, engaging characters, and fast-paced storytelling. Although this is clearly the first book in a larger series, the necessary setup never slows the momentum. Each chapter introduces new mysteries, dangerous foes, and intriguing twists that kept me eager to read on.
I especially enjoyed discovering the history of the dragons alongside Nolan. His journey from simply surviving to embracing a much greater destiny made for a compelling and rewarding character arc. The strong character development and immersive setting made it easy to become invested in both the world and its people.
If you enjoy epic fantasy featuring dragons, ancient magic, hidden secrets, found family, and nonstop adventure, this is a series worth picking up. I’m already looking forward to seeing where the next book takes these characters.

Looking at all the 5 star reviews, I was excited to read this book and especially one with dragons as it’s been a minute. Unfortunately I found the book quite frustrating to read because of the writing style. We did not need to be reminded again and again that Nolan lived in the streets and therefore had a hard life, that his village was burnt down but he does not remember anything else, that Mutt was his one and only friend, etc - it is not an exaggeration to say all of this was bought up every few paragraphs. The plot was fine if a bit simplistic and every character basically had two or three traits that would then be repeated repeatedly. Also Nolan doesn’t get to the academy until the 60% mark which was disappointing as it was one of the draws to the book for me. Overall there wasn’t quite enough to the story for me to continue the series.

This was my first book by this author, and I had a good time with it. Set in a world where dragons vanished centuries ago and an oppressive empire rules the land, the story follows Nolan, a young thief whose life changes after he steals from the wrong man. Rescued by a mysterious swordsman and his daughter, he soon finds himself caught up in a growing rebellion while uncovering long-forgotten magic and the truth behind the dragons' disappearance.
The world-building was enjoyable, and I liked how the mystery surrounding the dragons slowly unfolded. While the three main characters had a lot of potential, I found them a little too immature at times, which made it harder to fully connect with them.

The overall premise wasn't the most original, and I could predict many of the major twists before they happened. Even so, the story remained entertaining.

You have an Mmc, Nolan who has literally had to beg and steal to survive and survive he has until he meets liem.

That's all I'm saying lol i don't like spoilers of any kinds as it's off putting to read a whole book in one review.

*hidden magic,
*Lasting friendships along the way,
*learning the truth and
*betrayal.
It wouldn't be an epic fantasy without betrayal lol

The first half in parts was a bit slow for me, but the character development was good and i love the whole story line, the world building is stunning too.
I can't wait to read the next book...

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a great setup for what's to come in this series.

The first half was packed with adventures, hidden secrets and Nolan getting on my every nerves but, funny enough, I enjoyed it. There was never a dull moment or a boring moment at all as i was so immersed in the story. Time actually flew by so fast that i finished this within a day with the exception of work... I thought maybe this was the cozy vibes but boy... I cannot tell you how much i really thoroughly enjoyed the story.

I could envision this as a TV series honestly and I would binge it. Secrets and revelations happened at the other half and i definitely guessed it right for at least one of it and it was definitely about the fire that started... I just need the next book right now 😂😂

Nolan’s family and whole village were destroyed and nightly he has a nightmare as he tries to survive living on the streets. If someone saw the mark on his chest it would mean his death. On the day he tried to steal from the empire he almost gets killed but he is rescued by Liam. They commences a journey together that will change their lives.

Very well written and well narrated novel (I both read the book and listened to the audiobook). Excellent characters in a fast paced novel. Austria may have fallen and their people living in fear of the imperial soldiers but there could be hope. They need to reach the monastery in the mountains and work with the abbot. Action packed novel with great relationships and fights. Ice monsters and maybe dragons. Can the magic be brought back?

Our main character is Nolan, who is an orphan. He has survived all this time by being a petty thief. He is on a journey of revenge and self-discovery. While on this journey he meets several characters. The most important ones are Liem and Serah.

I enjoyed the fantasy and storyline. As the story progressed so did my liking for Nolan. He is slowly growing and maturing and we the reader are there by his side to witness it. I liked the world building and the action that kept me engrossed the whole time. I look forward to learning more about the Astrians and their oppressors. This was a quick and fun read with interesting characters and their choices.

Cinematic and bingeworthy with an entirely endearing main character. The world building is well-paced and captivating with an interesting take on dragons and magic. I was hooked from the first chapter and I couldn't stop reading until I finished it at 5.30am (I need to be awake in 3 hrs!). I have to know the publication date of book 2 of this series so I can plan ahead because I know I won't sleep when I get my hands on it. I have high hopes and am very excited to get to know some of the intriguing characters better, how Nolan's relationships will develop now that he has more than just Mutt in his life, but I also really want to keep going along with Nolan to find out his truth.

Shadow of Dragons is a fantasy novel that follows Nolan as he struggles to survive, learn about his past, and save his people from a cruel and oppressive enemy. Along the way, Nolan starts to learn who he is and about the power he possesses. There is strong world building in this book, written in a way that helps move the story forward. The story is pretty fast paced and at times suspenseful. There are strong themes of found family. This is the first book in a series so unfortunately (for the inpatient reader) it ends in a cliffhanger. Overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to continuing the series. Unpopular opinion but I’m having a very difficult time getting into the book.

The writing is difficult to follow at times. We talk normal one second then they start speaking almost old timey, it gets a bit confusing.

Our MMC wakes from a nightmare with a gasp but doesn’t open his eyes… so he still sees the terror of his nightmares in his mind… very confusing.

Also, Nolan complains internally chapter after chapter. It’s brought up about 4-5 times in one chapter that he slept in alleyways or abandoned buildings. Just felt like it’s being shoved down your throat with how bad this guys life has been.

This is the fourth book I've read by Jacob Peppers. He has yet to disappoint me. The world building and character development are great. The pacing is great. It does feel like a first book in a series. There is a lot of world building and setup here but it never slows down the pacing. That's okay because it makes me want to read the next book.

Review of ARC from NetGalley

I was instantly hooked into the world and its story it was one of those books where you pick it up to read a chapter and 5 chapters later you’re still going. The story itself is setting up for the bigger series with lots of interesting world building however it is still full of fast and well paced action and includes many mysteries that keep you guessing and are well executed in there discovery. I Will definitely be continuing this series.

Overall, I felt this book was a fun action adventure. The plot was action packed and there was never a dull moment. However, it did come across very YA with some swear words thrown in occasionally. There’s nothing wrong with that, just not what I expected going into the book. I wish the characters and the world building had been a little more developed, but I would continue reading the series to see if that development takes place. Great book if you’re a fan of revenge plots and the hidden hero.

Shadow of Dragons: A totally gripping epic fantasy adventure (Of Frost and Flame Book 1)

This is a great start to a series of magic and dragons. Not everything is as it seems and the reader is slowly brought through the struggles of an orphan boy who finds there is more to his world. The personal struggles and world building entrance the reader as they fallow his struggles.
The audible version brings dimensions and expands on the characters in the story.

I can see that this book is already getting some great reviews and I wanted to be another one to rate this one 5 stars. While I think the story is good, I think I was expecting something darker, with higher stakes. I don't know what it was about this book and why it didn't come off that way, but this felt like a young adult novel. There is absolutely nothing wrong with young adult books but when you go into something with one mindset I feel it throws off the desired outcome and therefore you are left wanting. That was exactly how I felt about this and though I didn't hate it, I didn't end up loving it either. Nolan and Sara were fine as characters but nothing really stood out about them. I don't think every book has to be super original but if the story isn't then the characters should be.

This all sounds like I hated this and I really didn't. It was good, it was fine, but to me it just wasn't outstanding.

Thank you NetGalley for the ALC! This was a great fantasy book. The narrator was great and did the female voices justice. There weren’t enough dragon scenes which I need in fantasy books if there’s little to no romance, so this wasn’t a typical read for me but I did like it
