Josh Graham created Pioneers of Human Behaviour around a deceptively simple question: what can the people who changed our understanding of human behaviour still teach us about ourselves?
A British author with a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Josh is currently completing an MSc in Mental Health Science. He began developing Pioneers of Human Behaviour in 2024 with the aim of creating the kind of introductions he wished he had encountered when first exploring psychology and the wider study of human nature: serious enough to respect the scholarship, but clear enough to invite readers in.
Each Pioneers volume is designed as a gateway, not a final word.
The books are built through a structured, multi-stage process of research, writing and verification. Research draws on primary writings, scholarly biographies, peer-reviewed studies, university and institutional archives, library catalogues, critical editions and other authoritative sources. Evidence is compared, uncertainties and competing interpretations are identified, and finished manuscripts are checked carefully against the underlying record, with particular attention given to quotations, dates, study details, disputed claims, questions of influence and priority, and material that has become distorted through repetition.
Each volume includes a full reference list of the sources materially relied upon, allowing readers to trace the evidence, examine it for themselves and continue into the original works and wider scholarship.
The editorial philosophy is deliberately simple:
No hype. No hero-worship. No easy dismissal.
Influential people are treated as human beings rather than icons. Their achievements matter, but so do their mistakes, limitations, disputed claims and historical context. Where evidence is uncertain or scholars disagree, that uncertainty belongs in the story. Where a familiar retelling has become simpler than the evidence allows, the fuller story matters too.
The purpose is not to tell readers whom to admire or what to believe. It is to understand before judging.
Across psychology, psychotherapy, neuroscience, philosophy, contemplative traditions and the wider study of human development, Pioneers explores different answers to enduring human questions: Why do we think and behave as we do? What shapes personality and relationships? Why do people suffer? How do we find meaning? What helps us adapt, recover and change?
No single thinker — and no single school of thought — has the whole answer.
That is why every book points beyond itself. Alongside its references and carefully selected further reading, each volume includes Words to Remember, memorable details that reveal the person behind the ideas, and a Discussion Guide for students, classrooms, reading groups and reflective readers — designed to turn reading into questioning, comparison, conversation and personal reflection.
Pioneers of Human Behaviour is founded and led by Josh, while a growing group of readers, narrators and other collaborators contribute to the wider project as it develops across books, audio and educational content.
Alongside his writing, Josh has worked in mental-health support and previously served in the Royal Air Force. Academic study, direct experience of human distress and recovery, and a long-standing meditation practice have shaped his interest in how people respond to adversity, relate to one another, find meaning and change over time.
At the heart of his work is one conviction:
Serious ideas should be made accessible without being made shallow.
Pioneers of Human Behaviour exists to open doors — into important lives and ideas, into the evidence behind them, into deeper reading, and ultimately into a better understanding of ourselves and one another.
