Fantastic debut novel, loved it ...

A Life Like This (Life Series) Book One is the debut novel by new author C.S. Jacobs.

The book starts off introducing us to Angelica. She is living in New York City and lives in an amazing brownstone. She runs into (literally) Blake, who is an investor and has the manners and grace of a saint. I love his ways and soon he sees Angelica and wants more. Angelica is very closed off to relationships, she has been hurt in the past and is happy with her life. She has a wonderful gay best friend (or is he) and he fills the gap that Angelica needs.

Life as she knows it starts to change when Blake wants more from her. Her internal dialogue tells her not to take a chance, but day by day Blake starts to wear her down. There are some great emails throughout the book and these help Blake to break her walls down little by little.

There is a dark part of this book and I will not reveal because that will spoil it, but needless to say it adds to the intrigue. The ending leaves us asking more questions about what is going on with Angelica and I for one, cannot wait for the next book in this series. I will be stalking the author to find out when it will be released.

I give this book a well-deserved five stars, well done C.S. Jacobs and congratulations on your debut novel in this series.

This book was fantastic. The author really makes you fall in love with the charecters. It does not take long to get so deep in the book that you can't put it down. I wish it wasn't over. I can't wait for what is next and the answers to so many questions. I don't think I have ever had a book end this way but it definitely leaves you wanting more!

I seem to be having a run of bad luck with the books I’ve been reading lately, it’s frustrating and depressing and I’m afraid the writing in A Life Like This didn’t help change that run of luck, it was quite stilted, it never seemed to flow well with the dialogue full of unnecessary swear words that seemed to be used to camouflage the lack of originality in the characters speech. The main protagonist Angie was like an oversexed hormonal teenager with the mouth of a sailor who seemed to get constantly aroused anytime Blake so much as breathed down the phone to her. Her character does have some issues after a past tragedy but we don’t find any of that out until half way through the book and that’s where it started to sound a lot like the Crossfire series for me. The bisexual best friend who models and wears their commitment phobias like a badge of honour as he has threesomes all over New York. The horrific events in Angie’s past. The threat the hangs over her head. The use of sex to control her fears and avoid anything real. Blake who is the caring sexy business man that hires Angie. The list goes on and on. I tried to like it I really did but it felt immature and amateurish in plot and writing technique with the whole cast of players made up of one dimensional tedious cliches. The sex was repetitive and dare I say dull with the romance falling flat. Again it will be to a lot of people’s liking but I couldn’t find anything to keep me entertained and the worst thing about it is the fact that it ended on a cliffhanger. Not sure I’ll be reading the next book.

I really liked the title.

Angelica is a 20-something urban (NYC) professional who comes from money but doesn't want to rely on it. She literally runs into Blake while jogging, but refuses to give her name... then a few hours later she's forced to tell him when she's pitching him as a prospective client.

So there's your meet-cute. And that's about the most interesting part of this book. She has a horrific past, prone to anxiety, was never shown any love by her parents, makes terrible choices -- this chick needs therapy stat!

Blake is intensely into her and that's off-putting even from the reader's perspective yet they still can't keep their hands off each other. But they seem to have some stuff in common so there's more to the relationship than lust. But she's also really good at pushing people away... and for once in these novels where the heroine has a tragic past there's demonstrated good reason for this.

She has a gay BFF, a wealthy step-grandfather from Texas (although I don't understand the "step" part or why it's important) and no female friends (interesting but not explored).

Sadly, the author's approach to this story is cliche. This is simply written, with little character development -- sorry, a horrific past does not make for good character development. There are also loads of inconsistencies in the spelling of character names, poor grammar, detail inconsistencies....Blake has a brother whom he hates, but yet has positive things to say about him... say what?

A Smokin' Must Read Debut!
This book was an awesome debut! As soon as I started reading I was drawn into Angelica's life. I had to keep reading, turning page after page until the final word, and what a final word! Holy!!! This book has so much to offer, we follow Angelica as she is living a good life, having overcome some bad from her past. She seemingly has it all, she's living in New York in a great brownstone, her gay best friend is the exact perfect bestie a girl could ask for. Then she runs I to Blake. This man is absolutely gorgeous! Everything about this man screams panty dropper! He is smooth. Blake brings out feelings in Angelica that she's never felt before. Blake wants something more with Angelica, but she can't forget the hurt that she's been through in the past. There are many aspects to this book, there is one key thing I will be leaving out of my review so as not to spoil, but it is something else! Will Blake be able to get through the safety walls that Angelica has put up in self defense? Will Angelica let him in, or push him away? This author's writing is so good. The plot was thick, at times unexpected, fraught with emotions, and the characters are so well written. They are really real. I look forward to the next read from C.S. Jacobs! I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well crap on a biscuit!!!!

Once I started I could not put it down. My mind was all over the place to the point it rivaled Angelica's. For a debut novel it had everything; suspense, love, humor, deception, action, and fear. What I wasn’t expecting was that last chapter. Damn!!

Blake, Angie, and Joey did it for me. The friendship combined with the chase made this a MUST recommend and follow-up read for me. How will C.S. top it, only time will tell but know I am anxious for the outcome.

Well, I may be a little biased but I just love this book ;)
Angelica is a strong woman character that I just love. She's passionate in all that she does, whether that is work, family, or simply being a bitch, she can rock it all. She has been through many hurdles in her life and she is trying to deal with it all as best she can. Life is great for her; she has an amazing job, an even better best friend and recently met a very handsome stranger. Much like with everything in life, sometimes it can only last for so long.
Something from Angelica’s past returns and she can’t deal with it. She struggles to find her happy place and once she does it is short lived.
I say it’s a must read….
