This book pulled me out of a reading slump. That alone should tell you everything.
A family heads to Florida after the father is suspended from work, looking to escape the Michigan heat and reset. They find a small town. And they can immediately tell something is off with the people there. From that point the story takes off and does not let go.
This is a horror novel, and given everything we've seen in the news about Florida, you can let your imagination run wild with the direction it takes. P.S. it involves alligators.
What sets this apart is the pacing. King gives you time. Time with the family, time with the town, time to learn the history and get to know the inhabitants before everything unravels. It earns its horror because you actually care by the time it arrives.
And when it does arrive? I was reading with the lights off. I had to turn them on. That has not happened to me in a while.

Once the tension starts it doesn’t let up!
The book gives an exiting start, giving you a good since of the world the MC is coming from. Once we get a good look at the fraud cast of characters and how they work as a family, then things really ramp up!
This book takes many excited twist and turns this book takes are wild. I won’t spoiled too much here, but I will say that “The Shadow over Innsmouth” must have been part of the inspiration for this book. Although I must say that this book tackles certain things much better!
The character work is great though action keeps on building and I must’ve said oh shit! At least a dozen times when reading this.

When suspended police officer Greg takes his family on a much-needed Florida vacation, they picture Miami's beaches and bright lights. But Greg REALLY needs to stay under the radar so instead he takes the reluctant fam to a rundown motel in the isolated Everglades township of Snake Bight, population 32 (plus a whole heap of 'gators 🐊). From here, their vacation takes a turn for the bloody and the bizarre.
I went in cold and was legitimately shook 🤯 by the twists and turns this sweaty, swampy, and downright shocking story took. This steaming, bubbling backwoods brew mixes in body horror, crazy cults, mad science, family feuding, a dash of B-movie magic, and some other insane ingredients that I won't spoil here 🤐
Highly recommend if you're looking for something to get your pulse pounding and your palms clammy. Between this and his excellent debut novel, The Place Beneath The Dirt, this author has become a firm favourite of mine and I'm chomping at the bit to see what he brings us next.

Well, this was a wild ride, that's for sure.
Suspended police officer Greg, decides to take his family on a vacation. They end up in the Florida Everglades, to be precise.
They happen on a little town, the people, although welcoming, are just a little off!
The family book a river trip, and the man in charge of the boat is Abin; who unbeknownst to them is a mad scientist type.
The boat breaks down, and that's when it all starts to go horribly wrong, for Greg and his family.
It was a bit of a slow start. Once it picked up, my interest was piqued. I did enjoy it for the most part, in a b movie kind of way. It's entertaining, I'll give it that!!

I received the ARC of "Snake Bight" directly from Rob. His writing is great and I loved his last novel, which I also reviewed prior to it being released. This novel really packed some punches that I was not expecting. There were so many working parts going on and at first, I was dead set that this is a cult novel- which I'm all about. As the novel progressed more plots surface and I was overwhelmed with feelings of isolation and panic. My subconscious was quite literally quoting Gandalf from the fellowship of the ring- "there's no way out.. They are coming!" Dude-absolutely terrifying once the book transitioned from a creepy family vacation in a small hick town to Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde's creature feature from Hell. I loved the unexpected and was picking my jaw off the floor the last halt of the book. The ending is lett totally open for interpretation which is scary in itself. Such a great job my friend. Definitely worth the read.

I didn't expect to like this one so much, but I had a blast with it! It's campy, gorey, ridiculous and funny as hell. Part low budget Sci Fic Channel thriller ala Sharknado, part Die Hard (with alligators), "Snake Bight" makes you want to never take another vacation ever again. I feel like the story took a while to get moving, and didn't necessarily grab my attention in the beginning, but the second and third act were bangers and I was flying through the pages until the end. I did find the main character to be a bit bland, though.
All in all, I'd recommend this quick, bloody read to anyone who likes their body horror with a dose of laugh out loud absurdity.

Snake Bight took me a little while to get into at first, but once it picked up, WOW, I was completely hooked!
A mad scientist creating a cult of swamp-dwelling alligator people sounds absolutely bonkers, and honestly, that’s part of what made this book so much fun. 😂 I loved how crazy the story got, and Greg and his family were so easy to root for; I genuinely found myself worrying about what was going to happen to them next!
This was such a wild, fast-paced, entertaining and fun read, just what I needed to cure a book slump! Yea the writing style might have been a little clunky but when we are dealing with facing the maw of lab engineered monsters - who cares!!!

This was a wild ride. Greg takes his family to Miami for a much needed break but secretly he has planned for them to visit the swamp areas instead, a place called Snake Bight. I don't want to say much more as I believe the enjoyment is from discovering what's going on in that quiet town. This book is creepy, gory, quite dark in places and also harrowing even sad. The ending was perfect for the story. Highly recommend.

This was a really cool plot, while reading it I could imagine it being a movie or a short TV series. It had the action, the drama, and a bit of comedy! The blend of horror and sci-fi was great.
I did struggle with the dialogue, it felt really cheesy to me sometimes, and the interactions between many of the characters didn't feel believable at some points either.
I'd definitely read more from this author, because I do think the plot was fun and the creativity shines through.

When things take a turn at work, Greg packs up his family to Florida for some R&R and distraction when they’re recommended a fascinating one of a kind swamp tour through the Everglades. Unable to pass up the opportunity for a day away from it all- plans of the beach are postponed and the family files down to the swamp.
The tour is led by a strange charismatic character than soon leads the family into a harrowing situation fraught with scientific abominations crawling not only from the swamps but Greg’s nightmares.
I thought the book was great! It was fast paced- jumping right into the story and characters- and never stopped. The creatures were eerie and swamp-thang-adjacent and the whole story had a certain “Sci-Fi channel special”feel to it.
I recommend this to anyone who’s ever been down in the Florida heat, or has stared into the strange eyes of an alligator at the zoo and wondered where these dinosaurs came from- and if they’ll be here when we are gone.

This may sound ridiculous, but my favorite part of this book was actually the afterword. I’m a Michigan girl, a huge horror movie fan, and a wrestling devotee who regularly attends WWE events whenever they roll through Vegas. I’ve been to multiple WrestleManias, SummerSlams, Royal Rumbles, and the occasional Monday Night Raw, so hearing about the inspiration behind these characters really hit for me. I genuinely think the book pays tribute to the legacies of Windham “Bray Wyatt” Rotunda and Jon “Luke Harper” Huber in a really heartfelt way.
For me, the prologue, Act 2, and Act 3 were the strongest parts of the novel, while Act 1 didn’t fully pull me in. That said, I honestly think part of that was my own fault. I listened to the beginning using text-to-speech while cleaning, and wow… text-to-speech really is the dollar store version of an audiobook. No emotion, no atmosphere, just vibesless narration flattening everything out. Once I switched to actually reading it myself, the story landed much better.
And this story is absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way.
You’ve got a cult leader creating a new species while claiming he’s going to save the world from corrupt politicians. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), Abin happens to be in Florida… where corruption and questionable elected officials are hardly in short supply.
By the beginning of Act 2, things really start moving. You keep reading not because this is trying to be some deeply literary masterpiece, but because it becomes impossible not to ask yourself: What the hell is happening in Snake Bight?
It’s fast, chaotic, weird, and genuinely entertaining.
I’d absolutely recommend this to readers who love over-the-top horror that feels like it should star Ian Ziering in a direct-to-DVD creature feature.
What I could do without: Use of the R-word. It doesn’t add anything to the book. It’s just an offensive term.

Well… I officially have a new rule: if someone invites me on a “cheap and relaxing” family vacation to an isolated Florida commune, I’m staying HOME. 😂 Snake Bight took the whole “family vacation from hell” concept and dropped it straight into the Florida Everglades and somehow managed to make a swamp feel even more threatening than it already does. Greg Boyes is already dealing with a life that’s falling apart when he decides a family trip might be exactly what they need. Unfortunately, Snake Bight turns out to be the LAST place anyone should be trying to repair a family. The atmosphere was one of my favorite parts of this story. The isolation, the swamp, the commune, and especially Abin Moses create this constant feeling that something is seriously wrong. He has that unsettling kind of charisma where you can understand why people would listen to him while simultaneously screaming at the characters through the page:
“DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN.” 😂
And just when you think you’re dealing with a creepy commune/cult story, Snake Bight pulls the rug out from underneath you. Because this isn’t just about what people believe. It’s about what happens when something buried refuses to stay buried. I really liked the way the story mixes family tension, psychological unease, cult like beliefs, and supernatural horror. The Everglades aren’t simply a backdrop either they become part of the dread. There’s something particularly effective about being surrounded by miles of swamp when you realize getting away might not actually mean escaping.And that idea of Snake Bight getting inside you?

The further things spiral, the more that sense of helplessness kicks in, and the story becomes less about simply getting out and more about whether the characters can stop what has already begun.
If you enjoy cult horror, supernatural horror, creepy isolated locations, family in danger stories, and that wonderful feeling of “WHY ARE YOU STILL THERE?!”, this one deserves a spot on your list.

If you love horror with small town cult vibes, gene splicing, human experimentation and a healthy dose of violence this is definitely the book for you!
After a botched drug bust leads to his suspension from the police force, and sick of the snowy weather, Greg decides it's time for a holiday. When the family arrive in the small town of Snake Bight, Florida, their relaxing holiday quickly becomes a bizarre reptilian nightmare.
I just could not put this one down, it was so good! I wasn't sure what direction it was going to take to begin with but I loved where it ended up. From bent cops to cultish communities to full on creature feature this book was such a fun ride! There were definitely some distressing moments and plenty of gore, but I was just having so much fun reading this one!
Abin was the perfect mad scientist/cult leader, I loved how he could flip from being friendly and pleasant to ranting and raving on the turn of a hair, it really made his character feel volatile and dangerous. This juxtaposed nicely with the suburban Boyes family, who had their issues, like any normal family, but when presented with Abins ‘family’ and compared to the way he treats his ‘children’ - ranging from polite indifference to downright abuse - they seem practically angelic!
The story has more of a medium-fast pace, with all the characters having their moments to shine, which made them feel more realised. I really felt like I understood the family dynamics of the Boyes family I would maybe have liked to hear a bit more about the townspeople in Snake Blight, but I guess we got all that we needed from them for the story!
The imagery in this one was great, the isolated Everglades setting made everything feel very green when I was reading it. There were also some pretty impressive death scenes, which were often creative, violent and gory. The book had all the vibes of a classic B-Movie to me, it was bizarre and ridiculous but such a fun journey to go on!

Read for Horror Indie-Tron 2026 🩸
Snake Bight is a horror story following Greg and his family as they take a spontaneous trip to the Florida everglades after Greg is suspended from his work as a police officer. The family ends up in Snake Bight, a town with only 32 inhabitants, and is surrounded by alligators, but as their holiday goes on, they become intertwined with the community more than they ever expected. This was so much fun, wow! I could not stop turning the pages, the plot is really entertaining to read. I love the setting of the Florida everglades, and I need more books with atmospheres like this. The horror aspect was CRAZY. I love when science becomes terrifying, and it ties in wonderfully with the grotesque body horror we get. I'm always a sucker for a cult, and this one was done so amazingly - made me think of Jonestown, if it had alligator-people instead. I loved this one and I'll definitely keep this author on my radar.

Okay… this book was WILD. 😂
Snake Bight was such a weird, atmospheric and unpredictable horror read, and I genuinely had no idea where the story was going half the time.
The Everglades setting was perfect for this kind of horror. Hot, isolated, creepy and with that constant feeling that something was very wrong!
I loved how the story mixes cult vibes, mild body horror (i was scared a bit in the beginning cause that's not my cup of tea), mad science and some seriously disturbing moments.
Definitely go into this one as blind as possible. The less you know, the better.

I was sent this book via the author and the IndieTron 2026 event organisers. This is the first book I've read by this author and it definately won't be my last!!

Arriving in the town of Snake Bight things take a wild turn when an alligator swamp tour in the Everglades goes horribly wrong.
Fast paced horror, I absolutely couldn't put this one down. Brilliant. 5* from me for this one loved it!!

A Fantastic story!! Creative and Imaginative!!! Great Characters!
Loved reading 'Snake Bight'!
The backstory was good, the description was fantastic, the Author really gets you to feel like you're in the Town of 'Snake Bight' right there with the characters.... and the monsters!!!
I read all of the character 'Abin's' words in his accent in my head which made the story more fun whilst reading for me. The writing was great- no overused words and the story flowed along nicely with a huge talent of imagination shown through the author's writing.
Loved reading 'Snake Bight'!
The backstory was good, the description was fantastic, the Author really gets you to feel like you're in the Town of 'Snake Bight' right there with the characters.... and the monsters!!!

This book is definitely a slow burn that ignites into an uncontrollable blaze halfway through the story. I'm an impatient reader, so I'm very glad I had resolved to finish it because once it got going, it *really* got going. Do you like cults? This book is for you. Do you like mad scientists? This book is for you. Do you like creature features? This book is most DEFINITELY for you. Impatient readers like myself? Immerse yourself anyway, because you never realize you're in a cult until the uniforms come out, its part of the experience.

Beware the swamp people.
Body horror, b-movie goodness - 10/10 would Snake Bight again. An absolutely insane story, each chapter it ups the anti.
Being b-movie esque yes there's some cheese but thats the gig. The gore gores, at numerous times I was grimacing and holding my kindle away repulsed.. If that's your vibe it's a must read.

Snake Bight was absolutely engrossing, I could barely put it down.
Anything set in the Everglades is automatically spooky but add in the tension of a small settlement and swamp tours with alligators and it creates a store that is absolutely intriguing.
Robert King II created a world that is strongly developed without losing the mystery that surrounds the Everglades. I felt like I was there with the characters. I can’t wait to read more of his books.

Unfortunately this one wasn’t for me!
Bumped up to a 3 star rating because some of the twists definitely caught me off guard.
To me the dialogue didn’t seem like real life.. if that makes sense. Kyle didn’t seem college age and just seemed way too immature. Some of the body horror was good but the gator mutants weren’t my vibe.
I’m still interested in checking out other works by this author though!

I’ve never read a book quite like this before. This was so fun i read it in one sitting. A Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde infused with reptiles? Loved it. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

Snake Bight is a thrilling story with an interesting sci-fi and mad scientist vibe.
The first half moves a little slower with a lot of character development and story building. I enjoyed the time taken to allow you to get to know the characters. However, some of the content could be cutback without hurting the story and improve pacing.
Then, oof, the second half is a doozy. Fast paced action from here on out. Interesting twists and turns that keep you guessing.

This was a really interesting book with a lot of clever twists. It does take a while to get going, but once it does it's an enjoyable read. It had some throwbacks to Florida that were a fun ride. If you're looking for a little more off the wall cinematic feel, this one is worth checking out.

Personally, this one wasn’t my cup of tea. At first, I thought it might be some type of survival horror, but it eventually turned into cult worship involving alligator people.
The character continuity issues and repeated dialogue had me close to DNFing, but I stuck with it because I wanted to see how it ended.
Others may find this enjoyable if they’re looking for a quirky read.

I found this hard to get into at the start. Then from the second act it flew by. Recommend for anyone that likes body horror with a bit of comedy in it .
