My life is perfect. Bad things don’t happen to me. Until the day my daughter vanishes…

I am the luckiest woman alive. I have a loving husband, who supports me in everything I do. A beautiful home, with comfy couches and art taped to the fridge. And Stella, my angel—my kind, gentle daughter. I’ve fought so hard for this life, and every day I’m grateful for it.

So it hits me like lightning, the moment I see my nanny stumbling towards me, blood drying on her forehead. She was attacked. Stella is gone.

The world spins. I fight to breathe. This can’t happen to me. Not now.

I thought it couldn’t get any worse, but as I sit in a daze on her bed, my eye falls on a threadbare stuffed cat, its eyes stitched with black thread. My blood freezes. Because I understand, now, who did this, and what they want from me.

And I know how far I’ll have to go to save my daughter, before my worst fears can come true…

A gasp-out-loud psychological thriller from the bestselling author of Not My Mother, with a twist you’ll never see coming. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Lucy Foley and Gillian Flynn.

A Perfect Mother
By: Miranda Smith
Pub Date: Sept 10, 2026
Publisher: Bookouture

I can always count on a fun psychological twisty novel which keeps me invested in the characters.
WE find a home built as perfect through social media, which seems to be a norm these days. One day the daughter Stella is missing and the nanny comes back injured.

Megan’s world is about to implode as her picture-perfect world is not what it seems. Unlikable characters and dark. I was all IN!

A Perfect Mother is a gripping, emotionally fraught thriller that plunges you straight into a parent’s worst nightmare. The opening chapters are devastatingly effective — the quiet domestic happiness, the gentle rhythm of family life, the sense of safety that feels almost sacred — all shattered in an instant when the nanny appears at the door, blood drying on her forehead, and Stella is gone. The author captures that moment with startling clarity: the disbelief, the breathless panic, the way the world seems to tilt under Cora’s feet. It’s a powerful beginning that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Cora is a compelling protagonist precisely because she clings so fiercely to the idea of her “perfect” life. Her love for her daughter is tender and genuine, but there’s a fragility beneath her confidence — a sense that she’s built her happiness on carefully arranged foundations she’s terrified of disturbing. When she finds the stuffed cat on Stella’s bed, a relic from a past she thought she’d buried forever, the story shifts into something darker and more personal. The realisation of who might be behind the kidnapping is chilling, and the author lets that dread unfurl slowly, tightening the tension with each chapter.

The domestic setting adds a claustrophobic edge. The beautiful home, the supportive husband, the curated stability — all of it begins to feel like a stage set, vulnerable to collapse. As threatening messages arrive and the danger creeps closer, the novel becomes a clever exploration of how secrets can rot beneath even the most polished surfaces. Cora’s desperation to protect her daughter is palpable, but so is her fear that the truth she’s been hiding might be the very thing that destroys them.

The pacing is sharp and addictive, with twists that land cleanly and a steady escalation of suspense. The author balances emotional depth with thriller momentum, allowing Cora’s internal unraveling to mirror the external threat closing in around her. By the final chapters, the tension is almost suffocating — a mix of fear, guilt, and the fierce determination of a mother who refuses to let her world fall apart without a fight.

Atmospheric, twisty, and impossible to put down, A Perfect Mother delivers a heart‑pounding blend of domestic suspense and psychological intrigue. It’s a story about love, secrets, and the lengths we go to protect the lives we’ve fought to build — even when the past refuses to stay buried.

A Perfect Mother by Miranda Smith is a highly recommended, soapy, domestic suspense novel following a social media mommy blogger.

Megan Thorne has made it. She has an impressive and profitable social media presence with her blog "The Years Are Short," and a best selling book. Her content features her and her adorable five year-old daughter, Stella, with her husband Ian preferring to stay in the background. She has two nannys/helpers, Sabrina and Tanner, and even a social media advisor, Eliza.

Imagine her shock when, during the media questions following her speaking at a conference, Sabrina stumbles into the room, blood on her face, and no Stella in sight. Apparently, while in the bathroom on the main floor of the conference center, Sabrina was injured and Stella was kidnapped. Katy Wang, head of security, looks at the cameras and they find the suspected perpetrator. Detective Olivia Ross is on the case with her team. Megan is left wondering how this can be happening to her.

There is plenty of tension and drama as the intricacies of the plot unfold. The narrative is presented from the point-of-view of Megan and the kidnapper in alternate chapters. As Megan is a self-absorbed, self-promoting lifestyle and mommy blogger, most readers should already be primed to have some dislike for her just on the amount of narcissism this requires. The kidnapper has her own agenda. There really isn't a lot of character development for anyone beyond the main characters, but don't expect any likable characters beyond Stella, Ian, and minor characters like Detective Ross.

As some basic background information is released, some plot points are predictable early on in the narrative. However, since the page count is low, the pages will fly by. Set disbelief aside, stay hydrated, and enjoy the soap opera-like disaster about to implode. This could also be a cautionary tale to keep the photos of your children private, and regulate your online profile to a minimum, especially if you have some hefty secrets to hide. The over-the-top ending is really something spectacularly enjoyable.

A Perfect Mother is a good choice for anyone looking for a short, fast-paced, entertaining soapy drama. Thanks to Bookouture for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Megan has built the kind of life people double tap without thinking twice: a supportive husband, an adorable daughter named Stella, a picture-perfect home, and a social media presence built around motherhood. Then her nanny staggers home injured, little Stella is gone, and everything Megan has carefully curated begins to collapse. What follows isn't just a race to find a missing child. It's a descent into the uglier side of internet fame, where strangers can become obsessed, appearances are carefully manufactured, and you never really know who's been watching your life unfold from behind a screen.

I went into this expecting another domestic thriller, and Miranda Smith had other plans. This book gets dark. Not the kind of dark that comes from a masked killer jumping out of the shadows, but the kind that comes from spending time inside a mind that makes you desperately want to back away slowly while maintaining eye contact. One particular character is so spectacularly unlikeable that every chapter had me muttering profanities under my breath. No spoilers because discovering that slow-motion train wreck for yourself is half the fun. The deeper I got, the more uncomfortable I became, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

This story feels like a warning wrapped in a thriller. We spend so much time consuming carefully edited versions of other people's lives that it's easy to forget how much is happening outside the frame. Every smiling family photo has a crop button. Every influencer has an audience. And every audience has someone who stops being a fan. If this is what happens when the algorithm decides to become self-aware, I'm deleting Instagram and scrubbing my online presence. Many thanks to Bookouture for this thrilling early copy that will publish September 10, 2026.

👧🏼Missing Child
👥Dual POV
🤳Online Influencer
🙊Family Secrets

I was hooked immediately. The pace takes off immediately in Chapter One. After several chapters in, the dialogue does start to feel a little repetitive—Megan constantly repeating the same inner thoughts.

I liked that there was Megan's POV and the kidnappers POV. The first 4 chapters are not labeled, but all in Megan's POV. Chapter 5 starts the kidnapper's POV then future chapters are labeled only when POV switches. It wasn't confusing to me, but I still wish each chapter was clearly labeled.

This novel definitely seems like it was inspired by family vloggers/influencers and if the image they portray is real or curated for consumption. It's such an interesting take on the dangers of putting your children on social media.

By Ch. 9 I figured out who the kidnapper is and how they were related to the FMC. So, it was a bit predictable for me, but I still really enjoyed it. It reminded me of reading a Freida book that I figured out but still could not put down.

The FMC was annoying as hell. She was written to be unlikeable and she was. Just truly awful. Despite that, the book was gripping and compelling—a real page turner. Even with the minor criticisms, I'm giving this 5 Stars because I haven't read a thriller that I couldn't tear myself away from like this in a while. It's definitely the type of book to get you out of a reading slump if you're in one. This was my first time reading anything by this author and I will definitely be checking out other books from her. Not only did I enjoy the plot but I really enjoyed the writing style and voice (minus the repeating dialogue at times.)

A Perfect Mother had all the ingredients for a gripping psychological thriller, and it delivered a strong mix of maternal panic, buried secrets, and escalating danger that kept me invested throughout. The emotional stakes were high from the first moment the nanny appears injured, and the tension only tightened as the truth behind Stella’s disappearance began to unravel.

I liked the way the story captured the shock of a perfect life cracking open, and the pacing stayed sharp as each clue pushed the mother deeper into fear and suspicion. The twist surrounding who took Stella was satisfying, and the emotional beats around family, guilt, and protection were handled well.

Likes:
• High emotional tension
• Strong pacing
• Engaging twist

Let Down:
• Some predictable beats
• A few dramatic moments felt exaggerated
• Side characters could have been deeper

Ratings Breakdown:
• Setting: 3⭐
• Characters: 5⭐
• Writing: 4⭐
• Message: 3⭐
• Overall: 4⭐

Overall Thoughts:
Even though a few moments leaned into familiar thriller territory, this story delivered strong tension, emotional urgency, and a twist that tied everything together nicely. The mother’s desperation felt real, the stakes stayed high, and the unraveling of secrets kept the momentum going. It’s a solid, engaging psychological thriller that hits the right notes if you enjoy domestic suspense with a sharp emotional edge.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

Oh, my! Went into this one blindly having never read Miranda Smith before.

Must say that I have apparently been missing out on life!

Megan is the epitome of the perfect mother: wonderful husband, beautiful daughter, successful influencer career, amazing home…she’s known locally and online as the “parenting guru.”

Her seemingly ideal life collapses in a single moment when her beloved daughter, Stella, disappears. Alarmingly, Megan and her husband, Ian, soon discover that she was abducted.

It’s every parent’s very worst nightmare.

When you’re famous because of your excellent parenting skills and perfect child, it’s terrifying to realize that fame may have put your child in harm’s way.

Who’s the kidnapper? Is it an obsessive fan or otherwise creeper? Was the staff not appropriately vetted? Is your own husband out to sabotage you? Or is your secret past back to haunt you?

I thought this books started out kind of slowly, but omg did it pick up. I couldn’t stop reading! Definitely a page turner.

There were so many shocking twists in this one! I was truly shocked on more than one occasion.

Def recommend and will be reading more from Miranda soon!

Delved into this one expecting yet another typical missing child story. Instead it turned out to be much darker than my expectations.

Megan Thorne, social media influencer and mother extraordinaire has come a long way from her dire beginnings. With meticulous care and resilience, she has nurtured a beautiful family and curated an online presence, both of which are perfection personified. But a dark secret from the past has been lurking in the shadows, threatening to overturn everything she holds dear. So when Stella, her six-year old daughter is kidnapped, Megan will go to any lengths to save her daughter and protect her family.

For roughly the first 40% of the story, the plot adhered to the usual parameters of the missing child trope - detailing the shock, fear, agony and guilt of the parents, suspicions thrown in every direction and the seemingly endless waiting. After this point, the narrative turned on its head, leaving me so spell-bound that I devoured the entire book in an hour. Much of the suspense is revealed by the 75% mark, the ending is predictable but oh! so satisfying.

Overall, a quick read. You can not go wrong with a Miranda Smith thriller. Thanks to Netgalley and
Bookouture for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this one! It was a quick, easy read, and the pacing kept me hooked because the action never really stopped. I also appreciated that everything felt relevant to the story, and there weren’t a lot of side plots or unnecessary details that pulled away from what was happening.

I especially liked how current the premise felt. The story centers around a social media influencer, whose daughter is kidnapped, and from there everything starts to unravel. It really plays into the world we see so much of now, where people share so much of their lives online and carefully curate what everyone else gets to see. It made me think about the difference between someone's real life and the version of themselves they present on the internet, and how little we may actually know about people once the cameras are turned off.

While portions of the story were somewhat predictable, I definitely didn't see everything coming, and there were still plenty of moments that surprised me.

Overall, this was a fast-paced, entertaining thriller with a very relatable and modern premise. If you like books about social media, secrets, and the idea that things aren't always what they seem, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try.

This is exactly the kind of thriller I love to devour!

Megan appears to have it all—a perfect husband, a perfect daughter, and the perfect life. But everything shatters when her daughter, Stella, is kidnapped.

Who took her? Was it one of the nannies? Her husband? Her business manager? Or someone else entirely?

I'll admit, Megan wasn't a character I liked. I struggled to connect with her from the very beginning, and by the end, I liked her even less. Don't worry—that isn't a spoiler!

This was my first book by this author, and it definitely won't be my last. If this is her writing style, I'm completely hooked.

Megan is hiding plenty of secrets—some from the distant past and others much more recent. As each layer is peeled back, the twists keep coming, and I think most readers will be guessing until the very end.

I was also surprised by how violent parts of the story became, but it fit the suspense and made for a gripping read.

I ended up giving this one 4 out of 5 stars. My only disappointment was that the ending came so quickly. I wanted just a little more before saying goodbye to these characters.

thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

i had a pretty good time reading A Perfect Mother. it was one of those books that was really easy to pick up and get through, and i definitely wanted to keep reading to see how everything would play out. the story was entertaining, and i liked the overall premise, but unfortunately, i found it way too predictable.

i feel like i guessed a lot of what was coming before it actually happened. there were moments where i was hoping for a twist that would completely throw me off, but most of the time i felt like i was already a few steps ahead of the story. because of that, i never really got that i need to know what happens next feeling that i want from a thriller.

that being said, i still enjoyed it. it was a fun, quick read and i didn't struggle to get through it at all. i think if you're looking for something easy and entertaining rather than a book that's going to completely surprise you, this would be a good choice.

overall, i liked it, but i didn't love it. the predictability definitely brought it down for me, even though i still had fun reading it.

This is high drama, page turning suspense! I started reading in the morning and couldn’t stop! Such an easy and addictive read.

I really enjoyed Megan - she’s such a big character and a lot of fun to spend time with. We learn about her past gradually through flashbacks. The rest of the other characters are mostly window dressing - not particularly layered.

We get a twist which was super thrilling but it’s comes in quite a bit before the end so it kind of platoed for me and the rest of the book didn’t feel quite as exciting.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the ARC.

I really enjoyed this book! The story pulled me in right away, and I was constantly trying to piece together what was really going on.

There’s a lot more beneath the surface than it first appears, and the secrets and revelations kept the story moving. I especially enjoyed how the tension continued to build as the truth slowly came into focus.

Megan wasn’t a particularly likeable character, but I still found her situation fascinating and wanted to see how everything would play out. There were also a few darker moments that caught me off guard.

I just wish the final chapters had been a little more developed because the conclusion felt too quick, but overall, I found this to be an entertaining mystery with plenty to keep me turning the pages.

This is my first Miranda Smith novel, and I’m definitely excited to read more of her work.

First of all, a big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me this opportunity. I'm truly thankful and honored.
Now, about the book, for me it sits at 4.5⭐️ stars. Loved the story, loved where the plotline went, and it was inside my comfort zone but took me for a ride in a way I wasn't expecting. I went into this book blind, only knowing it was about missing children, and I truly recommend it. Most characters are partially or fully unlikeable or deeply flawed, which I'm certain was the intent. I loved hating them and wishing to throw bricks at them. The story was easy to read, easy to follow, and very easy to enter, with stuff happening from the start, but now the main point that took that half a star from my review. I felt some chapters or cameos of interactions between Megan, our MC, and Stella, the daughter. I felt those additions would have strengthened the story. But in the end, the book was very, very good, and I will look for more of the author's books in the future.

WoW…. I devoured this in one sitting. Imagine your worst nightmare coming true with a kidnapping of your child…. Only to lead to a series of insane twists that unravel your deepest darkest secrets!

This book grabs you from the first chapter and is so relatable in today’s world of influencers and social media. Not everything you see online is a true picture of reality. I liked the multiple POV with the kidnapper and mother. The MC was so unlikable but fascinating to read…. Flawed, frustrating and believable!

This was my first Miranda Smith book and she I did love her writing style and way she made you feel the emotions as each dramatic turn happens in this book.

If you’re in a reading slump this is one to bring you out with how quickly and intense the story is. Highly recommend.

Megan is the perfect mother. A blogger with a vast number of followers who watch her every move. When her daughter Stella is abducted her shiny exterior starts to dull. What are Megan’s secrets and who is willing to expose them?

I went into this with high expectations based on the blurb. It met them and then some! This was an exciting and fast paced book. Secrets twisted and turned right from the start. I had no idea who to trust and felt really invested in the outcome. The chapters are written by Megan mostly with the off chapter by the ‘kidnapper’. The reader quickly learns the name of this person but the more important why takes time to come out. I have not been able to put my kindle down today. Blown away by the reveal and highly recommend this to anyone!

A Perfect Mother was such a fun, fast-paced read! I was quickly pulled into a story filled with twists, turns, secrets, and lies that kept me guessing until the very end.

The pacing was fantastic, making this a quick and easy read that was hard to put down. Just when I thought I had figured things out, another twist would change everything. I especially enjoyed the underlying reminder that secrets and lies created to keep the past buried don’t always stay buried—especially when there is someone out there who knows the truth.

A suspenseful, entertaining thriller with plenty of surprises, this is a great choice for anyone who enjoys a quick read that keeps you turning the pages and questioning what will happen next. Definitely a fun and twisty read!

Miranda Smith does an amazing job at setting up a terrifying, high-stakes situation. The book is go, go, go from the very first page! I thought I had it figured out but boy was I wronggg

The reveal was shocking and I loved the build-up to the kidnapper's identity. I suspected EVERYONEEE at one point. The pacing and the writing style was great, and there were genuinely moments when I was so anxious but couldn't stop reading!

If you like fast-paced thrillers with lots of secrets that keep you guessing and questioning everyone, definitely add this one to your TBR.

Megan has made a fortune using her daughter as the basis of her parenting program. Stella is taken while Megan is conducting a conference, Stella's nanny injured from a blow to the head.

She is frantic, who on earth would take her child? And why?

There are secrets and so many lies in this book. Well plotted, and the characters are well developed.

It is a brilliant read and I couldn't put it down. Miranda Smith always tells a good story.

This book really broke my heart though, children should be cherished.

Thankyou NetGalley for the advanced copy of this fast paced psychological thriller that hooked you in from the start.

Megan has built her perfect life and parenting empire around her daughter Stella - until Stella is taken, and suddenly all those carefully kept secrets and lies begin to unravel.

The characters were well developed, the tension kept building, and the reveals were brilliantly done. Some parts genuinely broke my heart, especially knowing a child was at the centre of it all.

Overall it was an addictive read, kept me turning the pages

Thanks to netgalley for the early review copy. The premise of this one sucked me in: a woman with a parenting blog/platform has her daughters kidnapped. To say it went in a different take direction is an understatement. Definitely twisty. And super fast-paced with very short chapters. I liked that we got the kidnappers' POV as well, and switching between the two was refreshing. Im not sure the ending did it for me. I could see where it was going and kept waiting for more. In saying that, I did enjoy the read.

Wow! This ‘perfect’ mother has definitely curated her own definition of the word perfect. I was drawn in right from the start. The dual POV, action packed, short chapters read very quickly. The power using of social media plays prominently in the storyline. Things are not always they way they’re staged. This is a cover to cover, head shaking, fast read that kept me up reading into the wee hours. I liked it! (3.5)

A perfect mother ..or is she?!
I loved this book, a thriller about a woman who is a high profile influencer sharing her perfectly created life as a wife and mother of a little girl. Every mother's worst nightmare comes true when the little girl is kidnapped.
The woman's perfect life comes tumbling down when little by little we understand that not everything is a perfect as it seems.
This book had plenty of twists and turns and was easy to read. Would recommend to thriller fans!

Thank you NetGalley , Miranda Smith and publisher for the ARC copy.
I really enjoyed this book. It is incredibly engaging and it's grips you from the first chapter to the last. The writing is easy to understand, the pacing is perfect and the suspense is so well written that it keeps you guessing until the plot twist reveal. You think you have the plot twists figured out, but you don't! I also loved the dual POV and short chapters, which made the story even more enjoyable.

I flew through this one! The secrets and twists kept me guessing, and I was constantly questioning who I could actually trust. I enjoyed the psychological side of the story and how the tension built as more details came to light. A few things felt a little predictable, but I still enjoyed the mystery and wanted to keep reading to see how everything would come together. A solid psychological thriller with plenty of secrets and surprises!
