A Woman of Secrets

A Forthright Highlander

The Culture Clash

1876 - England/Scotland

Elise, the Dowager Duchess of Wynd has the appearance of an icy goddess. She's calm. Collected. Controlled. If one spends time in her cool presence, receives a taste of her sharp wit, or hears a hint of the dark reputation that follows her, they'll realize the truth. Elise is a woman of many sides. And many secrets...and an even darker past.

She doesn't let anyone get close. Ever.

Colin MacGowan was a career military man. Stationed in India. He didn't expect to inherit a dukedom. But now that he has, a few items of business need to be addressed. Starting with a bride. He'd like a beauty. A perfect hostess. A lady. He'd also like one his clan will accept.

The last thing he is looking for is Elise.

London ice goddess meets Highland brawn and all sorts of sparks fly. Elise may have met the one person who sees through her. He frightens, angers, and stirs all kinds of passions within her. He's terribly close to her secrets, too. He may even break through her carefully constructed and maintained façade.

And that is something Elise will do anything to prevent...

Jackie Ivie

Jackie Ivie was born and raised in a suburb outside Utah's capital, beautiful Salt Lake City. The second in a family of four daughters and one son, Jackie was constantly amusing her siblings with her invented games, escapades, and stories. And she was always reading. She would even walk the family dog, with one hand holding the leash, while the other held the ever-present book. No subject went unread, but once she discovered Historical Romances, there was no doubting her favorite genre.

Jackie has always been the busy type, rarely sitting still without being occupied in at least one activity, and usually more. When she was younger, it was nothing to find her watching television, while doing her homework, listening to music, crocheting like a madwoman, and reading, all at the same time.

After graduating, Jackie gained secure employment with a large service company and relocated with her growing family to the neighboring, sparsely-populated state of Wyoming. She then spent several years enjoying the wildlife, scenery, and open space that Wyoming is known for. In addition to writing, Jackie is an accomplished artist in several mediums, preferring mixed media. She has several pictures in print and has exhibited in art showings throughout the West. There was never anything she loved doing more than reading, however, and once she discovered the thrill involved with putting her own words and fantasies on paper there was no stopping her.

In 2001, Jackie and her family took a huge step and moved to the largest state of the nation; Alaska. Although it was her job that brought her here, Jackie has grown to love this land of amazing contrasts, breathtaking vistas, and the ever-present resident, the Alaskan moose. There's nothing else like it, and the very long days of summer lend themselves to hours and hours of energizing tasks, while the long winter nights are just right for her real love...writing.

Jackie has now written thirteen novels and is continually starting more. The thrill of writing has now been enhanced by seeing her actual story in print. Lady of the Knight is her first published work. It will be followed by Tender is the Knight scheduled for release this summer.

This book was okay. I liked the idea of the book but I had a hard time connecting with the main characters. Elise was married and widowed at a very young age. Since then she has protected herself by playing the part of a heartless flirt. Then her sister ends up falling for a Scotsman who leaves her pregnant, then she dies in childbirth. Elise is left with trying to find a way to tell his family about the baby. This worries her a lot because her sister had nothing good to say about the family. When she meets Colin, the baby's uncle, she is not impressed by him at all. She finds him crude and rude, but is also drawn to him. She spends most of the book trying to tell him about the baby, but only telling bits at a time which get she into trouble with him. I know she is young, but I really wanted to smack her at times. Colin was definitely living up to his reputation as a barbarian. He kept giving her orders, not listening when she tried to tell him things, and generally being a butthead. There were occasional glimpses of a nice guy, but then he'd turn around and be an ass again. Perhaps if the author had included his point of view and thoughts his actions might have been understandable, but most of the time he just seemed mean. The last few chapters were the best, but even the resolution wasn't completely satisfying with Colin going from ass to lover in just a few pages. I preferred the maid, Daisy, and Colin's servant, Miles, as characters.

First I would like to thank Terra57 for inviting me to her blog where Jackie Ivie was a guest blogger. I won this book for leaving a comment.

I really enjoyed this story, and it made me laugh out loud quite a few times. I enjoyed the characters so much! Elise was fun and spunky and there where a few times I just wanted to shake some sense into Colin. It was such a quick read, my only disappointment in the book was that it ended when it did. I would have loved another chapter or two summing up their lives together at Castle Gowan and how things worked out with the other clans, his family, Rory etc...
I will definitely be checking out some of Jackie Ivie's other books.

This book left me spechless. I just wasn't expecting soo many things that have happened! (and I love when this happens. It's rare).

But I have to say, I never saw a romance of this kind so... Dark. Colin did some things to Elise that I, if I were her, would never forgive. Of course, she is not innocent too. If she had just spoke with him when she had the chance, nothing that bad could have happened.

ANYWAY. It's an amazing book and i will surelly read it again!

I found England boring. Once I got into Scotland, the action and romance seemed to pickup. I like Jackie Ivie as an author but this book had me swinging back and forth on who was doing what and feeling what to whom.
FAVORITE PART - when Colin first started breaking away at Elise's snobby ways
LEAST FAVORITE PART - harsh treatment of Elise when she was first thought to have a son
YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK IF: you enjoy seeing two people wrestle for love; you enjoy reading about things that happen as a result of keeping various secrets

I recently got into a lengthy conversation with my bestie about Jackie Ivie. I realized I hadn't read any of her books since high school, so I decided to change that, and in the course, change my life.

Okay, not really. But this book was compulsively readable (did I stay up until 2am reading it? sure did) and it's a super fun time. The characters have a super problematic relationship, especially by today's standards but their banter is top notch and I read this for fun, not to write an academic paper. I love the setting and the historical bits that are sprinkled throughout this - Jackie does her research! The writing flows so well and is easy to absorb. The characters have a kind of over-the-top thing about each of them that I find enjoyable in a historical romance. All in all, a great time was had by all, and I'm going to zip through the rest of my Jackie Ivie books sometime soon.

The hero wasn't likeable AT ALL. Okay, so a big brutish Highlander is ubersexy. More so when he plays the caveman. The problem... when the heroine just take it all and don't have backbone enough to see his wrong ways... EVEN IF SHE IS WRONG she should never admit it and fight him beck and teeth. Not cry and say it's all her fault anyway.

Plus... there wasn't ONE sentence from Colin's POV, and that's horrible because, seeing his character, it would have endered him more to the reader if we got a glimpse at his thoughts...

All in all. A good filer (when you don't know what to read) and only because Colin is a Duke though...

Terrible

In what world, past or present, would a woman fall in love with a man who has her gagged, imprisoned, manhandled, degraded, and totally disrespected? I would have rather seen the so called hero of this story killed than end up happily ever after. The so called heroine's actions and thought processes were weak to me. She should have walked away when she first met him and he insulted her. I won't be reading any more of this series.

I loved Ivie's first novel, Lady of the Knight and was looking forward to reading her second novel. I found this to be confusing, by chapter 5 I seriously was not liking the heroine and knew nothing about the hero. There was nothing that made me want to read more.

I thought it was really good, but I felt there should have been another chapter at the end...after "you know" where Elise explained the whole situation of her sister and Evan to Colin. Would have closed everything up nicely for a perfect happy ending.
