The Lumemaker

Control is the most seductive illusion.

The most important magic wielders in Lumerath are bound and enslaved in death camps, reduced to commodities of war. Lira survives by serving her community and burying everything that makes her dangerous—until she erupts.

Taken from the camp by the mysterious leader of the war effort, she’s expected to magically bond with him for the good of the continent, but Lira must figure out how to wield her power if she’s going to avoid being owned again.

As the most powerful Lucent alive, Lira becomes the center of a war she never chose. Every faction wants to claim her, control her, or kill her in order to tip the balance of power.

Survival both ruined and shaped her.
The ways in which she’s remade may break everything.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reader copy of the Lumemaker and definitely recommend reading this once it is released in August.

The FMC in this book was so refreshing. Strong willed, independent and an actual adult (30), which is uncommon in Romantasy. The magic system was very unique and I enjoyed that it was rooted in physics.

I really enjoyed the plot of this book. It struck a balance between light hearted fun (friendship, shenanigans, pastry schemes) and more serious themes (war, enslavement, death) that is hard to achieve. There were a few huge twists in the book that I did not see coming, but at the same time made perfect sense.

My absolute favorite part of this book is how big of a role choice plays. While there is an overall sense of a larger destiny, the FMCs choices are what drive the plot and what is celebrated and what could be sexier than that?

My only critique would be that sometimes the info dumps felt unnatural, however I understand that with world building and a complex magic system you have to get it all out there.

Overall this was a great read. I want to do back to reread and look for the things I missed and hints of what is to come, which to me is a sign of a great book. I can’t wait to read what’s next!

This story has captured my heart!! I cannot say enough amazing things and am thrilled this is being put out into the world. The magical technicalities reminded me of Blood Over Bright Haven, the Easter eggs felt similar to Taylor Swift level masterminding, and the characters reminded me of my favs from Fourth Wing! Every single piece of this story was written with so much intention. There is depth and nuance, growth and transformation. This first book (of the trilogy) has only scratched the surface of what we’ll encounter in the world of Lumerath. 🤩

I absolutely loved The Lunemaker. I couldn’t put it down. It had me laughing one minute and crying the next. I was totally connected with the main character—especially her complete lack of patience for mediocre men. Several times I said out loud “that’s what I would say!”

I loved the themes of women finding their strength and standing up for themselves. ❤️

The ending was amazing—I can’t. I loved it. The way I immediately wanted to start reading it all over again. Love it. Loved it all.

I finished this book in one day and stayed up way too late reading it because I could not stop. It was beautiful, tragic, and all together a masterpiece. It’s my new favorite book for sure!! Slow burn, tension, yearning, a battle that left me crying… a strong FMC and a good MMC that stays by her side. Friends that are there for her through it all. Corrupt systems that need to be fought. Absolutely beautiful book. I will be re reading this for sure!!

This was one of the better books I’ve read all year! The world was unique and its building was well paced. The characters were varied and had great personalities. The plot caught my attention early on and held it throughout the entirety of the book. Also, I will never appreciate yeast the same again. Lastly, I will absolutely be continuing this series.

Review of ARC copy I’ve received from author:

First of all I want to say thank you to Kate Gliske for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing story. This book was absolutely stunning. The pacing, character growth, it was unpredictable, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching and beautiful. The magic system is very unique and must have required a lot of thought to put together, and it worked! Every time I thought I knew what was happening the author threw another curveball to keep the story interesting. I got chills multiple times while reading this book and these scenes also made my jaw touch the floor. I loved how the author made you think about things as you’re reading to connect the dots and come up with your own theories! There are dark themes but Kate Gliske made sure to incorporate some lighter moments in there too so you can feel happiness as well. It gave light in an otherwise dark world and teaches us that we can find good things even in the bad times. This book also made me look into myself and challenge myself as a person to make sure I am being who I want to be. There is very minimal spice, but I promise you this book is amazing without it. The romance and longing is still there. This book is releasing August 4th and I highly recommend you add it to your TBR or go preorder it! I really wish I could share some of my favorite quotes without any context to give ya’ll some hints into what’s to come.

I loved the flow of this book! The magical universe was so well developed that I really felt like I got to know the characters and the environment as the story progressed. I especially appreciated the visual chapter recaps, which were incredibly helpful for keeping all of the different magical powers and groups of people straight.

The premise behind the powers and magical abilities was so interesting, and I loved how thoroughly each one was explained. The recaps were also a great reminder of those details whenever I needed a refresher.

I absolutely could not put this book down and was completely hooked from start to finish. I was so excited to find out that this is going to be a trilogy! I cannot wait to see where the story goes next!

Favorite Quotes:

“But surviving isn’t the same as living. Loneliness has a way of hollowing you out while you’re busy trying to keep everyone else safe”

“You don’t spare yourself pain by pushing people away,” he says. “You just postpone it – and lose time you never get back”

“If you haven’t figured out by now that nothing in this world can stop me from keeping you safe, then you haven’t been paying attention”

“My whole life, men have used me. Controlled me. Chosen for me. I expected you to be the same, but you aren’t. You give me a choice. Every time. And you protect that choice. You did it, even when you barely knew me.”

I will admit I had trouble getting started with this book. The magic system is unlike anything I’ve ever read (in the best way!) and it took me a moment to get my head wrapped around it. However, once I understood, I was enthralled with this entire world that Kate has built.

The magic system is truly unique, intriguing, and unlike anything I’ve read before. Kate is an actual scientist and has brought her scientific brain into this inimitable world. HOW is this Kate’s debut?! Keep an eye on this author, I have no doubt she will give us SO MANY MORE great stories!
One of the things I love most is after each chapter, Kate gives us a little recap so that we can keep track of important things learned in the chapter – different orders and what they do, new characters that entered the story, characters that sadly left the story. It made for a great refresher when I had to put the book down and come back to it later.

Our MFC isn’t some young princess. She’s in her 30s and begins the story enslaved in a camp that has been created to trap people of her kind. She’s strong, smart, and though she doesn’t know it at the beginning, fiercely powerful. She’s selfless, a fighter, and a true friend. She’s courageous and she fights for what’s right. She puts up with ZERO shit and will take you down for even thinking of hurting her friends.

The first possible love interest seemed great. I thought he was going to be IT! But then BAM! We meet Weston and oh damn… he is *THE* MMC to die for. He’s the first person that gives our MFC a choice in her life, the first to show her how strong, independent, and capable she is. He lets her discover who she really is without trying to mold her into something she’s not and without trying to use her for his own personal gain. He’s just… perfect. Beyond perfect. Trust me, you WILL love Weston.

This story has so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. There are great friendships, found family, and even some bakery shenanigans and a royal goose that I’m still cracking up over. I found myself having to cover the paragraphs under where I was reading because I was trying to read ahead but also didn’t want to spoil anything too early. I literally devoured this book and still think about it daily. I will absolutely be reading this again soon, once I finish some other ARCs I have coming up! If I could give this a 10 out of 5, I would. It’s that immersive and wonderful.

You MUST read this book! August 4th!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Genre: High Romantasy
POV: 1st person, single
Format: ebook
Stars: Infinity. The limit does not exist.

I’m still processing the ending, so I’ll be back to update my review as soon as I can form coherent thoughts.

But… this is the easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. This book has more quotes highlighted on my Kindle
than any other book I’ve ever read.

We all know that the Romantasy genre has so many common tropes and plot themes that sometimes it’s hard to find something that’s original. Well, look no further. The premise of this book is so incredibly unique. It actually took me a bit to wrap my head around the magic system at first. So if the first few chapters are a little slow for you, push through. It’ll start to make more sense.

As the story unfolds, you will have so many questions and it will make you want to keep reading into the early hours of the morning. Some will be answered. Some will not. I fear that Kate will get sick of me begging for the next book.

I love our FMC Lira. The people around her are the definition of found family. The banter between her and her friends! As a reader, the author makes you feel like you’re part of the inside jokes. Annabelle and the geese? The Yeast Resistance? These add fun lighthearted moments to an intense story.

There were two subtle pop culture references that I got such a kick out of - one from Monty Python and one from The Princess Bride. I hope those make you laugh too.

This book was just so incredibly special and has wedged itself into a place in my heart. It is going to stick with me for a long time. Never have I wanted to immediately reread a book to go back and pick up on Easter eggs like I have with this one.

I was blown away by this book. It's an epic fantasy with just enough romance to make a beautiful story, and a ton of unique magic to keep things interesting. Kate is a scientist and you can tell how much thought and time went into this world she created. And it's also hilarious! She finds a way to weave in witty storylines and banter that I thoroughly enjoyed (here's looking at you, Annabelle of Rivermoor). The story kept me guessing until the last page and I stayed up way too late finishing this amazing book. And the ending!!

I will be thinking about these characters and theories for
a long time to come and am already itching for the next book in the series! I’m planning a reread as soon as possible to search for more Easter eggs and theories for what’s to come.

Sooooo I would say 3.75⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I really enjoyed it. I liked the overall plot and the dystopian feeling and that the FMC was not a 20 year old innocent girl but a woman in her 30.
—> But that is why I feel the need to criticize some of her behavior because sometimes it didn’t feel really mature and more like a response of a young girl .. I get that her past is really really shitty and that she suffered SO much but I liked that she had friends who called her out on it! Self destructive behavior was a common pattern and sometimes it felt a bit much because giiiiirl, you can’t see what is in front of you!🫠
- The letters of Helene were SO good to understand her and her deeper trauma and was a really good representation of grief and unsolved trauma and deeply rooted scars and mistrust. But who did she send them to? Like this kind of mystery ..
- Her healing journey could have been more forward.. it was kind of a sudden in the end with the MMC I think and I thought I accidentally skipped a chapter or two 🫢😅
- The magic system is complex but you get the hang of it after a while .. it’s pretty unique and I had some problems visualizing it but all in all it was super cool 🫶
- love triangle was meh , hate this trope and didn’t get me anything I must say.. but it was nice to see like the two separate reactions to her scars and after I read the first reaction I was kind of suspicious of the MMC because wtf, this was really not about him and he made it so..
- the ending? Wow, didn’t see that coming 🤣 but I a genuine excited to see what comes next 🫶

This book was absolutely phenomenal. Kate’s writing is just brilliant. The magic system she has created is complex, and completely unlike anything I’ve ever read. The author explains the magic several times throughout the book but in slightly different ways each time so you can really grasp it. I’m not sure if that was intentional but it really helped me to understand it fully.

The characters all have so many different layers and the development of them all was written so well. I became attached to so many different people, even side characters stood out to me.

The FMC, Lira, reminds me of myself, she speaks her mind no matter the cost. She is fierce about her beliefs and isn’t afraid for them to be known. She stands up for what is right and is extremely loyal. She has great growth throughout this book and I’m sure she will be a force to be reckoned with in book two.

As for the MMC’s, I don’t want to say much bc I really don’t want to give anything away but things unexpectedly took a twist. 😵‍💫 It’s best to go into this blind.

There is not much romance in this book but plenty of yearning. I am actually glad there wasn’t a huge romantic/spicy moment because it just makes sense not to have it. Again, I can’t say too much on this without giving spoilers but just know, the spice isn’t needed at all. This aspect of the story…flawless.

I love found family in a book and this has it in the BEST way. The friendships, the banter, the humor, the inside jokes…amazing. There were moments that had me in tears laughing so hard. IYKYK…Annabelle. 🤣

The plot twists, there were quite a few, and they all completely shocked me, but towards the end…omg! Unreal. Like completely fucking mindblown. Would have never in a million years seen those coming. The twists were expertly done. I was speechless. This whole book is a puzzle waiting to be put together piece by piece. It is complex, layered, and just absolutely genius.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½

For a lot of the book, I was rolling my eyes at how predictable and familiar it all felt. The romance didn’t feel earned, I wasn’t particularly invested in the stakes, and the middle reallllly slowed down. The world and magic were interesting, and the promise of secrets and betrayal was mostly what kept me reading.

And then came the bait and switch with the romance. A little ACOTAR-coded? Absolutely. Did I see where some of it was going? Yes. But ugh, I loved it. It also finally gave an explanation for why the romance had felt so unearned earlier, which made me appreciate some of those choices a lot more in retrospect. The ending is packed with action and completely changed how I felt about the book.

If you’ve read a lot of fantasy and romantasy, there isn’t much here that will feel particularly new. It’s definitely a little rinse and repeat. But it’s also not bad, and somehow by the end I kind of loved it?

Will I read the sequel? Maybe. And considering how I felt halfway through, that probably says a lot.

This was hands down one of my best reads of the year. This is a HIGH ROMANTASY which I didn't know how much I needed that until I read it. The magic system is incredible. Rule based, and yet so digestible. The author does an amazing job of feeding you just the right amount of information about the system without overloading you.

The romance was perfection. And actual slow burn. That's right, I said it. Read the book and just TRY to come at it about it because you won't be able to. The MMC is giving Kaan SO HARD (from Ballad of falling dragons)

The plot was excellent. Combined with the pacing I honestly couldn't believe how fast it felt to read through this. Not to mention the TWISTS at the end of this.... that's all I'll say.

This book is something special. I've read 95 some books this year and this has stuck out to me, and I imagine it will be with me for a long time. I will ABOSLUTLY be back for the rest of the series.

Thank you Kate for the gifted copy.

I received an ARC of Lumemaker in exchange for an honest review. Huge thanks to Kate Gliske for letting me read this early… though I may never forgive her for what she put me through emotionally??

Somewhere in her inbox is the documented timeline of my descent into madness as I became absolutely paranoid about everyone and everything, increasingly concerned for my own blood pressure, and even more convinced the rest of this trilogy should already exist.

The emotional beats hit hard because they’re integrated into the fabric of the world building. The friendships, the banter, the tension, the heartbreak, the Yeast Rebellion… it all builds so naturally that I was hopelessly invested and completely unprepared to reach the end.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - No notes.

Patiently awaiting the rest of the series.
(This is a lie. I am waiting veryyyy impatiently.)

This book has become my whole personality.

4.5-5 Excellent Read

Thank You to Kate for sending me a finished copy of her book, The Lumemaker.

I have to say that I truly loved this book so much. I come from teenage years of reading epic fantasy like the Black Jewel's Trilogy, The Sevenwaters Trilogy and Lord of the Rings, so to me reading an Epic style fantasy that felt very reminiscent of those was a true pleasure. The world that Kate has built is very rich, complex and colorful. I love that it is so thought out and it takes its time to explore each faction. I would love to read a book where we get to explore this even further, a Codex of sorts of all the magic system and world aspects.

I absolutely loved Lira, our FMC, she was a strong female force, someone who at no point would back out of a fight and even in grief or pain, would stand up and besides those she loves. If you loved Aelin in Thrones of Glass, I can guarantee you will love Lira, because they are both warriors in their own way, fighting for a better future for their people and their found family.

There is a theme throughout this story of deep longing and grief that I found so beautiful to explore through the characters. There's a sense of loss in most of the characters, be it for their loved ones, their time, their future and even their lived experiences. I think this character exploration was one of the things I loved the most in how this book is written. And through the storytelling you find many nuggets of quotes that simply hit in the core of your heart.

"A reminder that grief doesn’t erase beauty, it sharpens it. Something can ache and still endure.''

"Grief has a way of loosening the things we’d otherwise keep buried, allowing them to surface without permission."

It also plays a huge role in understanding their magic system and how it develops and unfolds, which I found so absolutely touching. In real life grief can be such a powerful force, but finding a way to look at it from an angle of love and understanding is so poignant.

Exploring some of my favorite characters in the book, I have to mention Jorin and "the yeast resistance"! As a lover of bread, I never thought it would play such an important in a fantasy book! And there's even a little nugget of Marie Antoinette's famous quote "let them eat cake" which I found so endearingly funny. Jorin is just one of those characters that you can't help but adore, he could have his own "cozy fantasy" novella about baking and fighting a war and I would read it.

Now, let's get to the romance part of this book without spoiling anything. I will say this is a slow slow burn, it builds softly, quietly and it makes you wonder if it's all in your head at many points. I found it very reminiscent of the way Jane Austen wrote her love arcs, with tenderness and softness, where you are experiencing a deep yearning that even a brush of fingers feels like the biggest spark. I won't say who but this quote will tell you everything of how the longing was so igniting:

"Did you know you have strands of copper threaded throughout your hair?” I blink, caught off guard
“They’re not obvious. Most days it just looks dark brown, but in the firelight, when the flames catch just right, it threads through.” His thumb shifts, catching the gleam.

and... swoon

You will definitely get some romance, but I love that this story is really and truly about Lira and her journey through all of the moments she must endure, the suffering, the struggles and how in her own strength, fueled by the love and belief of those around her she can find herself and see who she was all along. Sometimes our found family is the one who truly reached our depths and pulls out the threads that secure and save us.

As a side note: take your time as a reader to explore this story, take notes, write them out if it feels a bit confusing at first. This is epic high fantasy, you are exploring a new world that has no threads in the real one. It might feel confusing at first but rest assured it will slowly develop. Make sure you read all the photos drawn at the beginning of the chapters and the excerpts at the top as well, there's a whole story being told in those, so don't miss it!

The Lumemaker by Kate Gliske ✨📚

If you like ACOTAR and From Blood and Ash, then you NEED to add The Lumemaker to your TBR! Heck, I even got some Harry Potter vibes from it. 😂✨ There were so many cool elements woven into this story, and I had an absolute blast getting lost in the world of Lumerath.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice: 🌶️ /5 (if you want to count intense kissing scenes)

✨ What you can expect:
• Slow burn
• Resilient FMC
• FMC in her 30s
• Surprising plot twists
• Comedic moments
• Unique magic system
• Romantasy
• First-person POV
• Themes of identity
• Medieval-inspired setting

Quick synopsis:

The very first line of the story is, “I’m too old for this shit.” And honestly… I immediately knew I was going to love Lira. 😂

Lira is a slave in the world of Lumerath, where one of the most powerful and misunderstood groups of magic wielders, the Lucent, are essentially treated as slaves. There are different orders, rules, and laws within the magic system, and I really enjoyed slowly discovering how everything worked. I took my time reading this one simply because I love annotating.

Lira is trapped in a death camp with her powers suppressed alongside others of her kind. She has survived this cruel world for years by hiding just how powerful her magic truly is—until she has an explosive magical episode that changes the course of her life and moves her into a completely different environment…..but not for the better. Her journey definitely doesn’t stop there.

Without giving too much away, Lira faces one challenge after another, and her resilience honestly became one of my favorite parts of her character. Despite everything influencing her, she continues fighting to remain centered and true to herself. She refuses to simply accept being “owned” by the system that has controlled her life.

And YES… there are plot twists! 👀

There is no spice, but the slow burn is absolutely worth it. Well I mean one chili pepper if you want to count intense kissing scenes. Honestly I feel as though the next book might give the readers a bit more. Honestly I love a slow burn! And knowing there will be another book in this series has me SO excited because I cannot wait to dive even deeper into the world of Lumerath. I already know I’ll be rereading this one before book two comes out!

One of the things that made Lira’s story particularly meaningful to me was how much her mindset reminded me of my years as a nurse—constantly giving, doing, and caring for others while sometimes forgetting to preserve yourself in the process.

There was one quote that really stuck with me:

“…preserve self with the same devotion given to others.” — Pg. 26

That one HIT. 🥹

And let me tell you… my annotations for this book are LONG. 😂 I honestly don’t even know how I could fit everything I loved about this story into one review without writing an entire essay!
My best recommendation? If you’re looking for an immersive fantasy world to curl up with on a cozy day, READ THIS BOOK.

The world-building is incredibly detailed, and I genuinely love when an author challenges the reader and gives you a world that you have to slowly uncover and understand.

Kate, you got me hooked. ✨📚

I cannot wait for book two! Give me ALL the Lumerath. 😭✨

This was a very hard book to rate. I picked it up because I saw it a few times on IG and was curious about the hype it was getting.

It fell flat for me.

The magic system, although interesting enough a concept, was absolutely impossible to understand. And then the second you *kind of* get it, new rules are introduced that turn everything back on its head (ie intro to the lattice concept at the end of the book, that key players were initially ignorant of, and then suddenly became experts). Too confusing. Simple is better.

The world was hard to visualize. I think it’s medieval? There are horses and castles… but then she has suppressors on her arm that are never properly described and feel hi-tech until the end where you realize they’re… like scars? Actual carvings in her skin? Unsure. Plus the extremely contemporary language was jarring and made me question what the heck this world was.

Lira is a survivor of a prison camp… she’s pretty chipper for a survivor. All of the “survivors” are. They don’t really demonstrate the abuse they’ve felt over years of captivity. They really just go with the flow which is just not believable. I didn’t feel the STAKES.

With the war… what exactly are they fighting for? The Thermist are fighting the Silan, and they both fight the Vis, but the Thermist are supplying the Silan with Lucent because they have a suppressor trade deal, and they’re doing this because…?

And then toward the end every single twist just comes out of nowhere, and is WAY too convenient. Wait a sec—the gods who aren’t actually gods want to break through the lattice and destroy the world (wtf where did that come from, how was it discovered so quickly and in such a convenient manner, and they ALL IMMEDIATELY BELIEVED IT?? I think there was even a line in the book that was like “well it’s written here so it must be true”… really?). Okay fine. But then these gods are releasing this sickness and LIRA miraculously has the one power that could possibly stop them? Huh what are the odds?

The twists were poorly revealed. I can’t say more without serious spoilers.

Finally, the romance. Meh. Insta-love at its finest. She’s perfect and all the men want her. There was a point where the tension between her and Wes was getting pretty good, until it got annoying.

Also Lira and Weston are supposed to be in their mid-30s… all I could picture was early 20s at most. The way the characters talk and interact and react… very young. Especially considering their circumstances. I kept forgetting their age which is why that twist at the end of the book was very difficult to believe.

I think the story had promise and obviously the magic system was unique and interesting… but it certainly wasn’t a top read for me this year. There were too many glaring issues in the book for that. Still, it was a good time and kudos to the author for originality.

Wowwww….just wowwww 🤯 like what the what!?

✨This book was SOOOO good!!! 💜💜💜 the book was beautifully written and the story flowed effortlessly. I was pulled in immediately! Such a fun and unique concept and it was just so good. FULL STOP. 🛑

The friendships and community were top tier and had me legit laughing out loud throughout the story. 💯😂

As someone who also has a mental health background professionally, I adored and appreciated so much how the author wrote about the grief and trauma that the FMC and even the supporting characters work though. It really resonated with me. 🫶🏼

Picking a few/many of my favorite quotes was challenge… 👀🙈😶‍🌫️ (there are legit soooo many!!)

💜 ”You’re allowed to be conflicted. There’s room for grief, alongside everything else.” “If peace has a shape. I think it might look like this, light and stone and silence, and the quiet assurance that knowledge is within reach, and that it will endure.” “…I don’t know why I’m doing it except that I need to find beauty amid this devastation.”

🔥 “This is what true power looks like. Not aggression or flame or stillness, but the imperial authority to command the world to stop and have it obeyed.” “Here, they want us to believe we’re participants, but pretty language doesn’t change the truth.” “I see clearly now the fundamental truth of the system that teaches even good men to support subjugation by calling it necessary.” “The way corruption doesn’t just infect, but destabilizes.” “We are all shaped by the environments in which we are raised, making it difficult to question what feels normal until we step outside of it.”

✨ “I’ve always loved the sound, it’s beauty a stark contrast to the life as live in this prison. A reminder that grief doesn’t erase beauty, it sharpens it. Something can ache and still endure.” “Count the towers…count your breaths. Numbers make it manageable, turning chaos into something I can hold…” “You don’t spare yourself pain by pushing people away, you just postpone it – and lose time you never get back. You need people, Lira. Even if it hurts.”

🥐 “The Yeast Resistance lives!” “Maybe that’s why —‘s efforts in the camp mattered so much. His quiet defiance disguised mutual aid as comfort.” “See? We’re resistance through butter.” “Annabelle of Rivermoor. Patron Saint of Forbidden Pastries. Let them eat buns.” “We don’t call her a religious icon, we prefer pastry deity.” “We Will Rise.”

💪🏼 “I am not fragile. I am primed.” “It doesn’t escape me that all the angels are women, as though even the Sovereigns re know whose hands can best hold sorrow.” “You burn too brightly for this place. Too bright for the men who rule it. — Then maybe it’s time someone to burn it all down.”

What a thrilling debut by Kate Gliske. Lira is instantly likable, she is strong willed and caring and I loved her interactions with her friends. I especially appreciated "Lady Annabelle of Rivermoor" and her exploits. Not to mention all the chuckling with The Yeast Resistance. Kate managed to inject the perfect amount of humor and lighthearted side stories to balance out the darker themes. This book goes hard with the world building, and I admit, even as someone who reads a lot of epic fantasies, I sometimes found myself lost in the magic system.

While I do understand the direction the romance took and loved some of the choices made there, I wish it had been slower paced, as it did feel a bit insta lovey (I know there's a reason for this, but still). And finally, the ending landed a punch for sure, I had a feeling that revelation was coming, I think my only nitpick with it is age based. It would have the same effect if Lira had been just a few years older when certain events transpired.

This was a very solid first book and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel for sure.

this book was a slow burn with many complicated sub-plots that converged on the main character Lira. it was a rewarding read and i laughed out loud many times throughout the book. Wes reminded me a lot of Rhysand from ACOTAR, but different in a lot of ways too. this was a story about pain, suffering, death, and relentless persecution that slowly turned into a story of trust rebuilding, healing, found family, and return. very glad i got an opportunity to read this book. thank you immensely to the author!

Note: I was an ARC reader for this book and my opinion expressed above is wholly my own and voluntary.

Late ARC Review:

I received this book as an ARC and then life got right in my way of reading. One move and job change later I’ve finally finished the book and… I was OBSESSED.

I instantly connected to our FMC and absolutely love that she was of middle age. It was refreshing to watch her learn the world around her from a space of maturity.

The magic system is unique and I appreciate the way that science was integrated into it without being too complicated to understand.

I ate this book up although it wasn’t without some minor notes. I did find the pacing to be a little fast. Some of the relationships seemed a bit abrupt both in and out. Not that I’m looking for inner turmoil too much (I hate a long woe is me phase) but the pacing did feel a little fast.

I need the next book because that ending GOT ME. Truly wish I had a physical copy because I was flipping back and forth at the recaps (which was an amazing touch I literally loved that) on my kindle which is wildly inefficient.

Fantasy lovers will love this book.

This fantasy world is much different and very unique compared to what I’ve personally read before. Almost felt a bit sci-fi. Its well thought out and complex, nothing felt lazy. I personally appreciated the Lumerath Recaps because it made it soooo much easier to follow along. Really likeable characters which is the most important to me

Arc review:

This was without a doubt one of the best books I’ve read in months. Possibly the best book I’ve read all year. I could NOT put this down. From the very beginning, I felt connected with Lira. She is such a strong, determined, intelligent FMC. Watching her come into her power was awe inspiring at times. Everything about this book was phenomenal from the editing, to the storytelling, to the unique magic system. The lightness throughout gives you time enough to breathe and brace for the heavier moments. It was so perfectly balanced. The ending was entirely unexpected. I had so many theories leading up to it and all of them were wrong. Safe to say my flabbers were gasted. I cannot wait to read book two. Reading this book before release has been such a gift and a privilege. Huge thank you to the author!

I am newer to the genre but LOVED this one. The female was fierce and wrestled from a place of strength in such a refreshing read. It’s been a long while since a book of this style has me both loving the plot line and also underlining quotes that resonate for simple life advice. The end of chapter graphics? Didn’t know I needed this in my life!! And the plot twists!! Just when I thought I had read it all! Very eager to see how Lira and her framily grows/deepens into book 2.

I give the lumemaker a 3.75 star. The story and the writing was ok. But the plot feel flat and it lack off depth. Everthing was too easy.

This was incredible and feel as though the next one is going to be better. Could qualify as another book boyfriend for my collection 😅 great plot, world and character building. Some of the ‘funnies’ I could do away with but overall 5 stars!
