Warriors of the Lathar #22

Taken by the Alien Bodyguard

Rate this book
One ship. One bed. Zero chance of escape.

Amelia has been fighting off the world since before she was old enough to vote. Evicted, broke, and down to a cat that isn't even hers, she does what she's always done when something picks her lock at 2 a.m. She grabs the bat and swings. She doesn't expect to break the nose of seven feet of alien warrior. She really doesn't expect him to sling her over his shoulder and carry her off the planet.

He crossed the galaxy for a cat, but he's not leaving without her.

Sub-Commander Thyaar has faced blood-crazed Krin and survived enemy charges, so collecting one cat from one human city should have been the easiest mission of his life.

Then a half-starved human who barely reaches his collarbone breaks his nose with a baseball bat, and his whole world resets around her. The bond hit the second she swung. So why can't he make himself tell her she's his?

He'll give her his life, if the pirates closing in on their crippled ship force the issue…

He just won't make her stay. Even if losing her kills him.

Filler is the word that best describes this book.

There's really nothing here that furthers the series. The characters are standard--the gorgeous alpha MMC, and the damsel-in-distress but playing-it tough-girl FMC. Oh, and there's the cat, who frankly is the most interesting character and who could spawn a whole series on his own. There wasn't a plot and the instalove was so contrived and unbelievable that it gave me a blood pressure spike.

I'd also point out that Mina Carter talked a lot of smack about how the previous book was going to be for the Emperor only to pimp us. She subsequently heavily advertised THIS book as the one for the Emperor, and once again, pimped. She even did a little Afterword where she tee-heed about this and again claimed the NEXT book will be the Emperor's story.

Man, I so loved the first books in this series. Real characters, interesting (if predictable) plots, awesome spicy times. The tie-ins to humans, building the programs to restore the Lathar race, some great new characters (Murphy, up to a point), and more world building. And then, strange changes began to show. Main characters who appeared multiple times in books adopted new, negative characteristics--the smexy head doctor, Laarn, who turned into a lying, misogynistic classist dude, the Emperor's personal guard, Xaan, the hottest and best fighter ever, turned into a limp noodle, his nate, Kenna, who was amazing and became a silly hesitant girly before disappearing from any mention. My personal giant piss-off, Murphy, a warrior and honorable guy who became secretive and somewhat duplicitous for reasons that were never explained or played out before he met his mate, a 2,000 year old Latharian woman on a weird "mission." I could drone on here about bizarre plotlines that veered off into the air, plot points that never went anywhere, characters that were just throwaways, etc. Long time readers of this series, if they're being honest, know exactly what I'm talking about. I've enjoyed the splinter series that took off into new spaces, although some of those had cardboard characters and no real plot either.

After so many books and so much sort of mindless meandering, it would be great to see some volumes that pulled things together and steered this big boat into a clearer world. It would also be fantastic if the long suffering Emperor, who was once so much larger than life and such a great leader, actually became that again. He has turned into a nothing of a character who has ignored the species purist movement, the super ill treatment of the rage blood dudes, including the return of his own son. I can't understand how MC allowed this character to become such a dud. As much as I'd like to see this guy get his woman, I don't know if I have the patience to wait through a few more limp books until she gets to a no doubt anticlimactic scene where Daaynal finally gets a human mate who I'msure will be suoer pathetic. I'm still trying to figure out how he got matched to someone who actually had another mate. There was no discussion of what happened there--bad programming, sabotage, something?

As I'm sure I've made aware, I have deep frustration about this series. At least a few books back I declared I was done because it just sucked. But honestly, there are so, so many truly awful stories out there passing for romance of all the genres that I keep coming back here. At least I know where I am.

It's long been curious to me what happens to authors who write long series or many series, who become very established or huge big deals in publishing. I'm thinking of some of my favorites like Kristen Ashley, J. R. Ward, Anna Hackett, Mina Carter, Golden Angel, Riley Edwsrds, all have had a lot of success and gained giant followings. But over time and many books, the things that made their stories so fabulous just seeped away. Characters changed or got rewritten into unrecognizable people, overarching storylines fractured or withered, and the light and love died right out. Sometimes i imagine the mojo fizzled out and needs a recharge. Until a few years ao, I've written books all my life as a career in tech. I know there's not a lot of comparison to be found here. But many times I lost the heart for that work. And writing, whether it's instructional, fiction, or factual, is still hard work. When that happened I would go back to the starting, solid elements from the beginning, asking myself the goal. Then I gathered the threads of that and started back down the road. Could these authors do that when things are floundering? Of course I don't live in their world with all the pressures and demands, so I can't say if that makes sense. But if I knew one of these people, I'd love to hear their thoughts on that.

So that's my review with a bunch of opinion tossed in. I would be overjoyed if MC got her hands back on the reins of this series and offered up the results of that. Reading yet another limp, soulless novella that's barely part of the existing series is breaking my reader heart.

RUSHED!!!

Too many plot holes!!! If you have been reading this series in order like me, you know a lot was left out. Great story, but we never find out what happens when they reach their destination with Barnaby. What about Amelia coming along with Barnaby?
How does Emily feel about seeing her Best Friend? What kind of Cat is Barnaby? Too many questions and no answers!!! We need a part 2 book since this one wasn't finished!!!

Short but sweet

I loved the cat! Now there needs to be an epilogue that explains the cat’s abilities or maybe that can tie in with the Emperor’s story. I’m good either way. I have enjoyed all these warriors of the Lathar and will be sorry to see them come to the end, BUT I’ve also been waiting for the Emperor’s match for a while. Hats off to Ms Carter for creating this world and presenting readers with some fun filled entertainment for years. I am in awe of her creativity. Of course some of the books were better received than others but I’ve always realized that these books appeal to a wide variety of tastes and were not written exclusively for me; an idea that I think some reviewers could benefit from. Well done.

Generous giving 3 stars.
This was supposed to be Emperor Daynaal’s story, but it isn’t.
I was truly hoping we would get the Emperor finally flexing his muscles and his four Drakeen, and putting an end to the dawdling that has been happening in regards to the Purists, the exiled Izeans and the dreadful situation on Parrac Nor, and other issues that have come up in the past in this series, the Warborne and the other offshoots.
Time to kick some major butt needed to redeem these interlocked Lathar worlds.
But instead we get this book. A short story with insta love that started well but went silly.
Why was Barnaby the cat not put into a carrier? Seriously, allowing an animal to just roam in a new environment is crazy.
But especially when you are just HOLDING him whilst dashing through an asteroid field to avoid pirates. Cats have super sharp claws which hurt when dug in.
I found the whole situation farcical, because of course a cat had to cause a technologically advanced spaceship, the Emperors own personal yacht, to have a major malfunction.
Some will find this situation amusing, I found it stupid.
But then a human woman with NO training, in anything resembling fighting of any description, thinks it’s smart to get herself out of a safe room where she was put for her safety, and take on pirates.
Why do authors write TSTFL idiot heroines.
I‘m going to be more particular in reading reviews going forward as even my favourite authors are following this plot line more often than I like.
Sad, as this used to be a brilliant series, which has spawned other good offshoot series but is losing the dynamics it had.
The funniest bit is Emperor Daynaal has now lost two of his personal vessels to his sub commanders antics.
Another thing that bugged me, the cat was given food but these two never ate anything, in 3 days.
Read through kobo+.

An unexpected bonus book in the Lathar world is always appreciated. I was delighted to meet the super sexy and capable Thayer. He took his babysitting duties of an Earth cat grudgingly but this was no cakewalk assignment!

Sub-Commander Thayer may be used to guarding the Emperor and military matters but the man is out of his league dealing with one very sassy, independent minded cat and his temporary caretaker!

Amelia may be downtrodden, poverty stricken and at the end of her tether but never let it be said that she was not a fighter! She fought off a would be intruder to save herself and Barnaby. She demands to know where her friend is from a strapping 7ft warrior! This is no pushover female and whilst she may be out of her depth when it comes to aliens, she has a spirit that won't be cowed.

Add in some space pirates, hiding in an asteroid field, and a cat doing disastrous cat things in space craft and Amelia and Thayer are soon breaking the ice after their frosty start. This may be a short -book but its packed with action, danger and an intense insta-attraction. Thayer may be all in but he still gives Amelia an out and never pressures her to be anything but herself.

Barnaby, he's hiding some darn secrets of his own! That cat is no normal cat I'm telling you.

Thyaar was sent on a mission to retrieve his best friends, new mate's, cat Barnaby.
Sounds easy enough.
Simple.
For an Imperial Sub Commander.
It's a walk in the park, even if he's never actually seen a cat on Earth.
Simple turns super complicated after he finds out the apartment has been abandoned and all property removed.
But again his experience as a Sub Commander comes into play as he uses his well refined skills to track down the missing cat.
However, there's a small miscalculation in the plans when Thyaar gets attacked with upon entrance to the cat's hiding spot.
Amelia who is friends with Barnaby's owner took in the feline and is quite protective.
She's just following her instincts to survive a burglar.
She has no way of knowing that a Sub Commander is on the scene trying to fulfill a noble duty to a friend.
Chaos ensues from there which makes me question what's really going on with this cat??

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.

Is this almost the last of the Lathar series??  I've loved all of these books, so I hope not.  This one has all the laughs, cries, instilled fears, hopes, and oh so many lush hugs. Both Latharian Sub-Commander Thayer and human Amelia have strong personalities. From the start, reading the evolving plot captivated this reader's attention as to how their HEA would be achieved. The adding of the C'Vaal pirate's attack,  the asteroid belt as a protection and trap, Thayer's torture, Amelia's inventive use of an attack weapon, just added an intense flavor to the plot.  As for the cat, well, Barnaby, now, here was an unexpected surprise.  One will just have to read this book to try and find out his cat's nature.  The ending left such a tantalizing hint of what Ms. Carter has planned for the next book.  All in all, this was another great read in this series, and I believe any of Ms. Carter's readers will look forward to what's up next.  This is my honest and voluntary ARC review.

DNF. I liked the synopsis, the main idea of this Story, but it wasn't that great in reality. It's like a mathematical equation where I did not get enough details to truely care for the characters.
**I had time to think about how I actually DNFd a Lathar book, (sacrilege!!) And came to the conclusion that Ms Carter diluted this particular series too much.
It started with a core group of characters, then branched out too far.
Initially branching out was good: you learn about the Lathar culture, the differences between each clan and glimpse what Earth is like, even meeting previous characters again which made the plot richer/filled out.
But Mina Carter branched too far.
Now it is diluted, all about characters I don't really know, and their story doesn't really add to the, once interesting, overarching plot of this particular series.

So, I am sorry to say, despite wanting to know what happens to their lonely emperor, I probably won't be continuing with the series.

Lots of Shenanigans Ending in Love!

After 22 volumes, I still pounce on every Lathar book Mina Carter writes. And I don’t usually have such a long attention span! “Taken by the Alien Bodyguard” is another 5 star Mina Carter hits out of the park. You’ve got to love a story that starts with a broken nose by a Louisville Slugger and ends with a pirate attack where the very cranky cat morphs into something else entirely. I wonder what the Berserkers will make of it!?!

If that doesn’t make you pick up the book, you’re already dead!
But for me, I can only say, “Thanks, Mina! I can’t wait for the next one!”

I was gifted a copy by the author and am voluntarily writing a review.

Love at first swing.
That is what Thyaar, the Emperors' bodyguard realized while on a mission to retrieve a cat from Earth that belongs to his brother's mate Emily.
Amelia was keeping the cat for her best friend when Thyaar decided to make a 3am appearance causing the fated crack of the bat.
Amelia insisted on going wherever Barnaby went which began a complicated adventure in space.
Will a confession with danger at the door be too late for a chance at love?
The Warrior's of the Lathar series never disappoints.
A great read!

Something as simple as picking up a cat suddenly turned into a nightmare for Thyaar but wait… a great bonus came with the cat! The mishaps of this mission were entertaining and quite funny. The cat turned out to be quite a character; we couldn't tell if it was making things worse or... helping? Thankfully, the Emperor was open-minded, and things didn't turn off badly. I enjoyed this little story about Thyaar a secondary character, who had been so loyal to Raaevik and suffered so much because of his fate.

I have loved every book in this series and after the ending of the previous book ,I was chuckled to see how a warrior could be bested by a cat. Things only go from bad to worse in the worst possible way for our captivating bodyguard.

I loved the characters and their storyline. Oh how the mighty fall.

The emperor certainly takes everything in stride. He has an amusing side to him and we know that his book will be the icing on the cake. Am I sad to see this world end? definitely. Hopefully Mina has more irons in the fire!

Another exceptional story Mina 💜

Quick, fun bonus book before the emperor's long-awaited book. Amelia and Thyaar are a fun and unpredictable couple. Amelia is intent on providing and protecting Barnaby, with bat, while Thyaar's mission is to take him to Emily on Parac'Norr. Let the fireworks begin!!!
This series is always creative, well written and entertaining.
Well worth my time and $$.

I received an ARC from this author, but am happily leaving this review, so others can enjoy her work.

I devoured this short fast paced sci-fi romance romp. The characters definitely drive the plot, even though there is plenty of action, and this time a cat named Barnaby gets his well deserved share of page time. I got the impression both Amelia and Thyaar were sort of outcasts ramble rousing in their youths. There is as many laughs as sighs and Amelia and Thyaar fall in love sweetly even if they have trouble admitting it. Great short read!

This was another fun addition to the series and I absolutely loved the concept of a cat doing cat 'things' in space ;P As you may expect from that opener, there's definitely humour in here. There's also action, drama, danger, emotions, space pirates, intense attraction and a spicy HEA. I love how both Thayer and Amelia were strong characters and was thrilled they got their happy ending. So good and maybe we'll get more stories added to this wonderful series 😁

Thyaar was sent to Earth to retrieve a cat, but whilst there he met Amelia. It's a quick but enjoyable story. I liked how the characters dealt with such an interesting feline; it made the book for me. I have to say I would have liked a longer. story and would have liked to know what happened to the cat and how it dealt with a new planet and its owner

My review is written voluntarily after reading an ARC of this book

Aliens' first contact with an earth cat

Barnaby was pure genius to the story. Poor Thyaar, anything that could go wrong did. Those of us who are privy to "cat attitude" could relate, except you know for the pirates. The story was great, a lot of action with Barnaby as winner of best supporting character. This is a keeper, well written never slowed down. Would definitely recommend.

I love this addition to the series. I hope the series never end. Funny, some suspense and an awesome cat. Amelia is broke and taking care of her friends cat. She hears someone breaking in to her apartment and hits them with a baseball bat. Thyaar was sent to Earth to pick up the cat the mate of his brother asks him to get. The humorous journey begins. A fantastic story.

To short

Loved the story. The characters have a very interesting feline to deal with that really makes the book. Only issue I have is I would have liked the book to be longer. Because the cat was a main character would have loved some follow up on the cat, it's owner, how it deals with new planet.

This is shorter book by Mina.  It is a story with a good plot but it just ends. The cat makes this story and hopefully the next book will round this book up too. Thyaar has his hands full from the moment he trys to get the cat and gets to meet Amelia. Can't wait for the Emperors book next. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.

I loved it! It was fun with th exciting in there to keep it going. I wonder if the emperor knew how cats react to being moved when they don't want to or want attention. Barnaby seemed to like to let everyone know when he was displeased. I have some feral barn cats like that. Every once in a while I have to remind one of the I am not a tree to climb. It's a fun story to read.

Barnaby!!!! I love him!!!

Thyaar is tasked with retrieving Lady Emily's cat, Barnaby. An unknown roommate of Emily's is caring for Barnaby. Thyaar breaks into the apartment, gets whacked and then the adventure begins! Loved it. Love Barnaby. So....is he a fighting street cat or....please let us know how the reunion on Parrac Nor goes.

Thyaar isn't happy to be sent to earth to collect a cat and meets Amelia, who is taking care of the cat and refuses to let him take the cat. The trip back isn't without danger when they encounter pirates. It takes all both of them and the cat to overcome the pirates. That cat isn't normal, really want to know what is up with it.

It starts off with a cat and went downhill in the 22nd book of the Warriors of the Lathar series. Commander Thyaar is headed to Earth to retrieve Barnaby, but Amelia is his handler and when conflicts occur it became more than a rescue. What happens next was a delightful steamy romance story. I love the heat level between the characters that explodes as the rescue becomes complicated.

Nice to see another human woman with a fighting nature and not afraid to commit to working with/for her mate. What’s the deal with the cat? Is it a Maine Coon? Please hurry and write more!

I absolutely loved Thyaar and Amelia's story. Hilarious with all of Barnaby's antics....

The best parts was when Thyaar fell into the sinkhole and when Amelia attacked him. What a way to meet your one...
