Vincenzo Messina is a tactical genius who demands absolute control to win the World Cup, but his new PR director is a walking distraction. Armed with weaponized sunshine, Sofia Hofer threatens his sacred locker room, igniting a fiery clash of wills and sizzling chemistry they both refuse to acknowledge.
Arriving at the secluded Base Camp, Sofia's relentless optimism immediately collides with Vincenzo’s dictatorial temper. She treats football as a passionless branding puzzle to protect, while the volcanic coach fiercely shields his squad from the media. Bound by a lucrative Armani sponsorship, they are forced into thirty days of inescapable proximity within a secure compound and high emotion during the matches.
As the grueling tournament progresses, their battle lines blur. Sofia discovers the devout heart beneath his melodramatic touchline theatrics, while Vincenzo realizes her efficiency actually protects his players, shattering his defenses. He engineered the perfect tactical trap on the pitch, but her weaponized sunshine cornered his heart. With the championship final looming, they must choose between maintaining their rigid professional boundaries or risking a catastrophic public scandal for a passion they cannot control.
The Sicilian Trap is a standalone, fast-paced, steamy soccer romantic comedy by Mara J. Ova featuring grumpy-meets-sunshine and forced proximity tropes. It is a perfect read during the US-hosted World Cup, and the Italian vibes make it an ideal summer escape.

This is an intense read set in the World Cup/football world.
I chose it as it's currently World Cup season, and also because I was curious as to how the author would portray this topic/sport. It's especially interesting, also, as Italy failed to qualify for this year's World Cup.
Vincenzo Messina is a force to be reckoned with, literally. He has been very instrumental in getting the Italian football (soccer) team to the World Cup. His unorthodox ways of motivating the players and exacting methods of discipline have fans and management in awe with some fear, but contractual obligations with sponsors are the spoke in his wheel.
Sofia Hofer is accustomed to being the only woman in a room filled with men in sports, and she knows how to get her job done. She is efficient, smart and organised. Italy's football management team begs her to help them keep the Armani sponsorship deal, as Vincenzo considers the media as a distraction. Armed only with her previous knowledge, Sofia is unprepared for what the behind-the-scenes views of Messina and his team would show her.
This is an actual, actual sports romance. There is football through and through, and the relationship is directly borne out of it. Both main characters learn from each other, make space for each others ideas and shortcomings, and there is obvious character development.
While the relationship develops through football, however, I felt that the romance aspect didn't get to flourish the way it could have. I felt passion, and tension, but no real romantic love. Only love for football. And the epilogue doesn't add much, either. Rather, it sort of just answers whether the pair can still work together. It's for that reason that I rate it a 3.5 read. It's a book that football fans will enjoy, but it falls flat on the romance aspect.
A World Cup sports romance with grumpy/sunshine vibes. Sofia, the Director of PR, needs to tame the head coach of the Italian soccer (football) World Cup team. She never expected that this hot-headed Sicilian would get under her skin with his good looks and his dismissive attitude toward her role, but then she realizes the devotion and stress he endures to achieve the ultimate win. Vincenzo has one goal in mind, and any distractions to him and his players are infuriating, especially when one is as beautiful as Sofia and seems to challenge his rules at every turn. As they move toward the finals, brief moments of intimacy continue to distract them, but will it cause them to lose the elusive World Cup, or will they find common ground to move forward in a new relationship? I found this book interesting, especially with the 2026 World Cup happening now, even though I’m not really into sports. It gave me a look at the challenges coaches and players face and how they deal with the media. However, I thought the romance took a back seat in the story. The main characters didn’t interact much until near the end, so I didn’t feel much chemistry between them. Overall, I think World Cup fans would enjoy it, but as a romance, it didn’t quite work for me. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a mixed read for me. I enjoyed the soccer aspects of the story and found the game scenes engaging and emotional, especially since I happened to be reading it during the World Cup. There were also a few moments that made me laugh, and I enjoyed the epilogue.
That said, the romance didn't fully work for me. I prefer a slow-burn relationship, while this leaned more toward insta-lust and there wasn't enough interaction between the main characters for me to become invested in their connection. I also struggled with some of the characterizations, particularly Sofia's role and the male lead's domineering behavior.
I also noticed several technical issues throughout the ARC, including incomplete sentences, quotation errors, and a few typos. Because of this, I would personally wait until those issues are corrected before recommending the book.
Overall, I think readers who enjoy a quick, easy-to-read romance with a dominant male lead may have a better experience than I did.
The Sicilian Trap by Mara J. Ova is the perfect blend of sports romance, sizzling chemistry, laugh-out-loud banter, and heartfelt emotion. Set in the backdrop of the World Cup, we are introduced to the FMC Sofia Hofer, a woman with a PR Plan and the MMC Vincenzo Messina, a tactical genius that wants to win the World Cup. One of the things that I enjoyed about this novel was how well the main characters balanced each other out. Vincenzo's sharp contrast with the spirited, independent Sofia created an electric tension that jumped off the page. Their witty exchanges and undeniable attraction make every interaction entertaining, while the slow-burn romance built into a satisfying payoff. Alongside the steamy romance were moments of vulnerability, personal growth, and found family that give the characters depth. Overall, The Sicilian Trap was a fun, emotional, and spicy rom-com that left me smiling long after the final page.
I received an ARC copy from Pen Pinery. Thank you so much for giving me a chance to read and voluntarily review this novel!
I’m a fan of Mara Ova’s sport romances and as expected this delivered for me. I did think the soccer aspect was the strength of this novel. The game scenes were captivating, letting you feel like you were there and invested in the outcome. I picked this read now since we are in the middle of the World Cup which definitely added to the enjoyment. As far as the romance, I get the physical attraction between Sofia and Vincenzo but I didn’t get enough interaction between them during the 30 days they were together to be convinced it was anything more. I appreciated that Sofia was portrayed as a strong female lead and wasn’t afraid to stand up to Vincenzo, especially since most everyone else appeared to be intimidated by him. Also, between the two leads I felt like I got to know Sofia better than Vincenzo. I wasn’t sure what motivated him other than he was Sicilian. This was a really enjoyable read and would recommend for anyone who likes actual sport scenes in their sport romances.
The Sicilian Trap is a spicy, addictive soccer rom-com that brings all the heat, tension, and heart. Vincenzo is the perfect grumpy coach—intense, controlling, and completely focused on winning—until Sofia storms into his world with confidence, sunshine, and a spark he cannot ignore. Their banter, chemistry, and forced proximity in Sicily make every scene feel charged, playful, and deliciously dramatic. I loved the mix of World Cup pressure, Italian setting, emotional walls, and slow-burn romance. Sofia and Vincenzo’s connection felt fiery but also sweet, with just enough vulnerability to balance the spice. This was fun, sexy, romantic, and impossible to put down. A perfect five-star read for anyone who loves grumpy/sunshine, sports romance, and a coach who falls hard.
I love Mara's books and love Italy, having lived there for three years, so this was a total gift for me. The chemistry between Vincenzo and Sofia is amazing, their banter is funny (Vincenzo is totally funny). And it is a great read durung the World Cup. The book might benefit from one more proofreading round, though, but it did not harm my reading experience as I tore through the book in two days!

I enjoyed this World Cup love story. I love a grumpy guy, sunshine woman love story. Add some soccer and Italian words and I'm a goner. The author was fantastic at explaining what was going on on the field, I could almost see the soccer games in my head while reading. Not only are you rooting for the love story but also for the Italian soccer team. Great characters throughout the entire story.
