The Belief in Angels is a powerful and emotionally compelling novel about trauma, family, survival, memory, resilience, and hope.
What makes the story particularly moving is the parallel between Jules and her grandfather, Samuel/Szaja. Although they come from different generations and face very different circumstances, both characters are forced to confront profound suffering and find ways to keep moving forward.
Jules's difficult childhood, marked by family instability and tragedy, is contrasted with Samuel/Szaja's harrowing experiences of persecution, the loss of his family, Majdanek, and the destruction of the Mefkura. Their stories show how deeply traumatic experiences can shape a person's identity and how the effects of suffering can echo across generations.
One of the book's most interesting elements is its exploration of memory, dissociation, and family secrets. The novel raises thoughtful questions about how people protect themselves from painful experiences, how families carry hidden histories, and how confronting the past can sometimes become part of the journey toward healing.
