The New Orleans murder rate is on the rise in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the city is reeling. With police resources on the decline, Homicide detective Sarah Renner and her partner Gabriel Lucas investigate a case where a gang member is found fatally stabbed in a local bar. The deeper the investigation leads them the more both detectives learn the lengths people will go to when their lives are torn apart.
Well written short story. The atmosphere of New Orleans is so strongly created that the it becomes a character of its own. The main characters are quite well developed, inviting you to connect and feel interested in the outcome of their investigation. Whilst at times, the plot can feel rushed, it isn't so hurried that you are pulled out of the story.
I love books which are set in a time when a huge news stories takes place. This one is a great short story, set in New Orleans, with a couple of murder detectives on the trail of a gangland killer following the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina. Stephen Johnson writes with great clarity and an ever increasing sense of tension and excitement, leading you along the path of an investigation which holds ever more twists and turns for the investigating officers. First class and I can’t wait to read more of his work.
