Alison Uttley (17 December 1884 – 7 May 1976), née Alice Jane Taylor, was a prolific British writer of over 100 books. She is now best known for her children's series about Little Grey Rabbit, and Sam Pig.
The old farmhouse in question was Castle Top Farm, Cromford, Derbyshire. I was brought up on Little Grey Rabbit, Sam Pig, and later "A Traveller in Time" and the delightful reminiscence books about her late-Victorian country childhood. This is not so much a cookery book, though there are plenty of recipes, but another evocation of days gone by. Pauline Baynes's illustrations are delicious.
Pauline Baynes' VERY beautiful illustrations accompany Alison Uttley's text exquisitely well. This book is as much a recollection of a late nineteenth century country upbringing, as a collection of recipes for the competent cook.
The illustrations are already killing me, and I just grabbed this from the booksale at the library five minutes ago. It's so pretty I want to frame it. And I haven't read a single recipe yet!
