The fourth hexciting book in Suzanne Selfors' Ever After High: A School Story series.
Keeping up evil appearances is hexhausting work for Faybelle Thorn. But as the daughter of the legendary Dark Fairy, it's all part of her story. So when Justine Dancer is looking for a fairy to audition for a part in her new play, Faybelle's not interested...until she finds out the role is that of a wicked fairy queen. It's the role of Faybelle was born to play, and there's no way she's going to wait in the wings and let some other fairy play it! Faybelle soon finds out that she's actually got some pretty stiff competition for the part, so she resorts to drastic measures to land it: dark magic. But when her dark magic spell is an epic fairy fail, it's up to Faybelle to do the fight thing...What's a dark fairy to do?

I was volunteering at the library in the children's section and I always keep an eye out for certain authors like Soman Chainani and Suzanne Selfors. They didn't have the Ever Never Handbook, but there were 2 Ever After High books that I had not read yet. Hexcellent!

Fairy's Got Talent features two lesser known flying fairies named Faybelle Thorn and Farrah Goodfairy who compete for the role of a dark fairy in Justine Dancer's new play. Faybelle is the daughter of the Dark Fairy who cursed Sleeping Beauty and Farrah is the daughter of the Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. It was refreshing to see two fairy tale characters who hadn't been mentioned too often get their own story.

Faybelle Thorn has been perceived as a villain in the television show, but I personally think all the fables are redeemable. They are all just so adorable and I just want to squeeze their cheeks. Despite her villainous heritage, Faybelle is an ambitious and bright fairy who just wants to make her mother proud. Sure she had her diva moments, but ultimately she learned some great lessons from Baba Yaga because Faybelle is in charge of her own destiny rather than the Storybook of Legends.

Farrah Goodfairy unfortunately didn't have much depth and seemed to be a carbon copy of Apple White's blank do-gooder vibe. She didn't seem to have any apparent flaws other than her magic always ends at midnight. She was a formulaic foil to Faybelle but lacked her opponents's fire and likability (at least for me).

Bonus Shoutout
Bunny Blanc

Faybelle Thorn's roommate was Bunny Blanc, the daughter of the White Rabbit. I thought she was pixie perfect in the show and her charm translated well to the books. She munched on carrots and forgot to throw them in the garbage. She and Faybelle got along well and only argued over her messiness. I love that they gender-swapped Alice and the White Rabbit with Alistair and Bunny. They are so sweet and I need more storylines with them now!

Nina Thumbell
Nina Thumbell is the daughter of Thumbelina and is a member of the Cheer Hexing team. She was only mentioned a handful of times but I'm glad she was introduced. The Thumbelina film features one of my favorite soundtracks and it was a nice surprise to read her name. Plus she's a cute POC character in the Ever After High universe. Points for diversity in children's fiction!

My darling Goldie Lockes was mentioned throughout the books and gave all the updates for the play via her MirrorCast show, Just Right. She can be bossy and a bit of a muckraker, but she's my homegirl and I love her unapologetically. Despite her sneaky journalism, she's always there for her friends for a shoulder to cry on or a lock to pick. Stay tuned for another magical review from Goldilocks Reads.

I'm very meh about this one. It's not bad, there's just not a lot of substance. I miss the depth of the Shanon Hale books.

Fairys Got Talent
PLOT: Faybelle Thorn and Farrah Good fairy go up against each other in a play written by Justine Dancer. Faybelle wanting to live up to her rep as the next evil fairy queen (and quite honestly leave her mother's legacy drowning in her fairy wing dust). So she decides to scheme scheme plot plot and figure out a way to keep the other fairies from auditioning so she'll get the lead role herself.

MY THOUGHTS: Say WHAT? Dark fairies in white? Dark fairies who feel GUILT over their treachery? Evil professor's that are half and half. So much half and half. And didn't when we get introduced to the Evil Fairy Queen in the Netflix series when they ended up in Wonderland she was NOTHING and I mean NOTHING like this version. The one in the series was disappointed in Faybelle. IM disappointed in Faybelle. If you're gonna be a villain be a VILLAN. I have NEVER EVER heard of a villain wanting to wear WHITE! SHIMMERING WHITE! And I honestly don't know what to do with that image. It's disturbing. It does make you think a little bit that good & evil aren't all black and white. Like there's some evil in good people and good in evil people. BUT this just isn't the way we've seen Maleficent. Although if you watch the recent version she starts "off" as good. If you watch ONCE the "dark fairy" starts off as good. But white? How about gray? She babbles some kind of reason to us along the lines of evil doesn't have to be all dark capes and pointed hats. But I guess I can admire the Dark Fairy creating her own style and going off her script. So she's "Rebel". Then there's Baba Yaga. SO DIFFERENT! Read the Grimm Fairy Tales if you want an illustration of what I mean. That Baba Yaga is FIERCE! She eats children. She has horsemen. She will rip you to SHREDS in a heartbeat with no thought about it. And then hang your skull on her fence for decoration. Who is this watered down, imposter? That sits on her pillow & gives advice about using dark magic in a wasteful way. Faybelle might have been "sloppy" with her magic but her intention CLEARLY was mean-spirited. Doesn't that equal EVIL? It was also vindictive. Again EVIL! Having wilted wings caused pain and physical exhaustion. For a kid's book, this is about as evil as you can push it. The Grimm version Baba Yaga probably would have wanted all the competition blown up to fairy dust if she were the professor. She would have probably given Faybelle at the least a low B. I don't even know why this Baba Yaga IS the evil advisor. She's a decent advisor but Raven's mom would make a WAY better evil advisor. At least she not only talks the talk she WALKS it. This lady KNOWS her role in all this. And then there's Faybelle. (sighing). Her plots were good. The first to hit all the fairies with a dark spell so they're wings would drop so they couldn't audition and then making Cupid's bow look like she was the one that accidentally hit herself so she'd drop out were nicely thought out. The execution of each was poor. I probably would have graded her a C on each. But then she starts to feel bad about what she did. She places the spell on her own friends which shows potential for an Evil Queen, but then she starts to feel all teary about what she did to the good ones too. And in the end, she goes back and REMOVES the spell. I mean it's one thing for a villain to show some sorrow (PRIVATELY). IF THAT. BUT to go back and REMOVE what they did because of GUILT! JUST NO! There are already too many SOFT characters in this. And why in this did a lot of them just seem ditzy? Farrah was ditzy. Her whole thing was I wanna make people feel good by making them look good. Bunny was ditzy. She just wanted to drop carrots all over the room. Ok, let's excuse her tho for the sake that she's a Wonderland character. Cupid was ditzy and keep going on about how Faybelle needed love. Which had NOTHING to do with ANYTHING in this story what so ever. And I half feared that it was going to take a crazy turn and pair her up with one of the guys and he convince her to "do the right thing". The story had potential and I suppose for the sake of the audience it's intended for there had to be some moral lesson with the dark character showing good, but like I said I prefer my DARK characters to be 100 percent DARK. And they carry out their antics with glee and NO REMORSE. Otherwise, it's like AWWW. (And not in the cute way).

The daughter of the dark fairy is captain of the cheer team, president of the villain club, and is an all A student. This fairy has all that she needs for her future as the next dark fairy. Then she's told their is a play, and only fairy's can the main role. She says no until she hears it's the role of the dark fairy. It's the role she's been born to play. She does whatever it takes to get the part including casting a curse that affects the enemy. It spreads to every fairy in the room, even her cheerhexers. She's made a huge mistake, and then she affects herself as well. What will she do now.

Keeping up evil appearances is exhausting work for Faybelle Thorn. But as the daughter of the legendary Dark Fairy, it's all part of her story. Time to take center stage as the main character in a school play to show everyone she can so do 'the evil thing'.

This book features two fairies named Faybelle Thorn and Farrah Goodfairy who compete for the role of the dark fairy. Farrah is the daughter of the Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. Faybelle is an ambitious and bright, who just wants to make her mother proud. I could see myself liking Farrah if only she had more of a character because if she's kept the way she is at the moment she's going to be another copy of Apple White, (who I dislike).

Stray thoughts:
-Two of my favorite things about this series are when it adds details or explanation to the whole destiny plotline (like how parentage works) and when new characters that I can't wait to hear more about in the future (lookin' at YOU Little Mermaid's daughter!!!) are introduced. Also seeing royals and rebels comparing each other's stories and bonding over certain elements or being jealous of each other's stories.
-Keeping classic Fairy-twisted phrases like "Hocus Focus"--oh, yes!
-I was really surprised with Farrah's whole blue theme that they didn't introduce her as the fairy from Cinderella AND Cedar's story...

Faybelle is trying really hard to be be wicked but unfortunately isn't that competent. Thankfully a strong relationship with her mum and advice from Baba Yaga help to save the day.

I feel like this series is aged down from Middle Grade to Chapter Book? It isn't dealing with as big of themes anymore. Mostly I keep reading to check up on what's going on with people from other books. And because I can get through a book in like, 40 minutes.

The challenge here was to write from a villain's p.o.v. while keeping the character sympathetic. Selfors manages it brilliantly, maintaining a limit to how dark Faybelle gets with her magic, and keeping it child-friendly.

Faybelle is a great villain. I'm loving that Ever After High is keeping her a Royal and a villain so far, but still manages to make her likeable and not TOO evil.

The book Fairy's Got Talent by Suzanne Selfors was a REALLY good book. This book is about 2 faries named Faybelle and Farrah. Faybelle hears about a role in a play, but just ignore it until she finds out tat the part in the play is an evil fairy queen. Then at that point Faybelle wants to play the role in the play. Faybelle go to the audition, but realizes she isn't the only one with talent. Faybelle decides to cheat and use a spell to make herself get the part. Read the book if you want to see what happens next. I would defiantly recommend this book if you are looking for a good book to read right now.

This one took me the longest to read, but it’s because I just really can’t stand Faybelle. I think she’s annoying and she’s just mean. Like yeah I get it, you’re supposed to be a villain, but Jesus you don’t have to be like this in High School. You’ll get your time. Plus the only reason why she wanted to reverse the spell is because she didn’t get her way and it affected her. She didn’t really feel bad. I’m really glad she didn’t get her way. But nonetheless, I did enjoy reading this book. And on to the next one.

I really enjoyed this book. Faybelle was a really fun character, and I enjoyed reading about her. The plot was also fun and interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Ever After High series, and I would recommend all the Ever After High books to anyone who enjoys reading fairytale books.

I thought the book was great! It was full of fun things, cool spells and things magic people can do, and most importantly, it passed a message. If you are interested in reading this book #ItIsGreat! So if you are, you should so read it! Also, for me it felt like I was magically transformed into the world of ever after high myself! Have fun!

If there’s one thing I can about being told to stay inside, is that my TBR shelf is shrinking faster than I can re-stock it, which I guess is a good thing. I can’t even remember when this was added to it, but it was cute. I can’t lie, sometimes you just need a light fun book. Can I remember anything about the other ones, nope but I’ll happily go read the next one.

This book was sweet. I love the backstory and character development of Faybelle. Though she’s destined to be evil, at the end of the book she understands the limits of what should and shouldn’t be done. I love the moral of the story: to do things for yourself, instead of what you want others to see you doing. And it’s ok to mess up because everyone does! You can learn from mistakes and what to do and what not to do in the future.

A part of life at "Ever After High" focusing on Faybelle Thorn. As typical of these stories, there are things that can be learned through the experiences of the main character. As the main character in this case is actually "evil", it's a bit more obvious but it is still enjoyable to read.

I love these books by Suzanne Selfors even though I am not the intended audience. This one finds a dark magic spell being used to get a part in a play. THEN everything goes wrong. Highly recommend this one.

I wouldn't mind the focus of these books getting back to the main story line. They're not bad, but nothing really happens in any of them.

Usually a book about a character can make me like them, but woth Faybelle, it only made me hate her slightly less. I did like to see her mess up as much as she did.

A classy tale with a sassy heroine who refuses to be second-best.
