This is an engrossing story that follows Margaret Lansburgh and Alan Troquair, childhood friends and recent sweethearts within the Scottish aristocrisy, as they find their way through ever changing political and religious landscapes and conflicting views and family expectations, not to mention murder attempts, family tradgedies and conspiracies. Given the age of the novel, it is surprisingly easy to read, aside from the Scottish accented speech which did take a little getting used to, and the story is fairly fast paced and moves along nicely.
