Z-Minus II - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This is an epic second part of the Z-Minus series; once you enter its pages you'll be whisked away to the recent past and dragged there kicking and screaming with equal parts of terror and excitement at the clever combination of characters, their emotions [which are so realistically expounded you feel every atom of their pain, joy etc] and every nuance of action set out here by master of apocalyptic
fantasy sci-fi Perrin Briar.

Moving smoothly on from book I, in a seamless transition, are our main protagonists - former cage-fighter Chris Smith and his 8 year-old daughter Maisie. We feel their sense of relief as they make a temporary but vitally safe domicile at the deserted Usher's Farm, where they see relatively few zombies and are able to start living self-sufficiently as small-holders in the barn and outbuildings.
In St Bartholomew's Hospital a vaccine-development centre has been set up to find an antidote for the zombie-virus before it's too late for Mankind. Lead scientist is Dr Victoria Kahn and we read for ourselves her diary of despair, as nothing seems to work and despite the army cordon protecting the centre, time is running out and the plague is overwhelmingly irresistible in the worst way they could have dreamed of.

Into the mix comes the surviving family of Chris' last cage-fighting foe, Tommy Jones...three generations, some of whom cannot forgive Chris for putting their son/brother/uncle into a coma and thus being effectively dead! Grandfather George rules the clan and eventually both families agree to fight for survival together against their mutual enemy.

Will the Smiths and Jones' make a new life without the peril of zombie attacks in the countryside? Can they work together long enough to teach the younger generations that co-operation and community spirit is the only answer if they want to live united in harmony and strength?
How will the zombie holocaust ever end, when more succumb each day? If they escape to London will it be a case of out of the frying pan into the fire? When the end comes, will the vaccine be ready - and will there be enough to save those already infected?

So many questions, but you'll be so keen - as I was - to find out all the answers, you'll keep turning pages and wanting more - a winner of a series for an incredible author, Perrin Briar.

Is the best help you can offer giving life support to those who can't choose for themselves? Or is it turning off the machines when all hope of recovery is gone? What about an injured child? Friends and foes alike try to help reach the only chance for survival for a young girl.

When a slim, hard to reach chance is the only chance, do fight for it? Battle to reach it? Give the child the last dose?
What do you do next for humanity? For those that helped you?

I was honored to read an advance copy of this action and delimma packed story.

I am again surprised at how the author manage to package zombie, epic battles, and personal, as well as mass scale ethics battles into one small package.

An intense standalone, we're left with a hope for humanity- IF people can work together against dark forces to reach it.

Don't like action? Not the book for you.

Like twists and turns? Dive in!

Continued from book one, Chris and Maisie wind up at a reasonably secure barn where they begin to establish a new life in the apocalypse. They’re visited by a family with ties to Chris’ past, which has some mixed results. New friendships and re-ignited rivalries begin to emerge. A terrible encounter then forces Chris, Maisie and George on an expedition to London to find a cure for the zombie virus. The small group faces a journey with steadily increasing difficulty. The closer they get to London, the more concentrated the zombie numbers become. Can they reach the research facility in time? And have the scientists managed to create a cure yet?

The start gives the reader a bit of insight into Chris’ past, while further developing the relationship between him and Maisie. Once again, there’s also plenty of action throughout. It was another very enjoyable reading experience for me.

A wild ride with a count down clock.

This was a quick read for me because I couldn't stop reading. I finally had to after midnight, but finished the next morning. I thought it was well written and I liked the characters. I rooted for them and cried with them and rejoiced with them. This is the first book in the series I read and now I have the first to read before continuing the series. I recommend to anyone who enjoys dystopian / zombie apocalypse genre. I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving an advanced reading copy that I requested.

Another in the series from the author's promotional site. Not infected, Chris and Maise continue to survive in the only safe place Chris could find. But nowhere is really safe and eventually others come that are linked to a past Chris would like to forget. With them comes a horde of undead which attack the kids infecting Maise and George's granddaughter. The race is on with George, Chris and Maise attempting to get to the only research center in London working on a cure. Can they get thru the ever increasing masses, the gangs and the army to reach the cure in time. And the race is on........

I can't believe it took me almost 2 years to finish this!!!

It wasn't because it was not good, i actually enjoyed it, but other books got in the way... and the start of the book felt a little bit slow.

There are some minor errors through it. And even though the plot is exciting the end feels like it only makes sense when considering that the story has to go on. It's a "now me, now you" situation that feels a bit "meh".

Overall it made for a good time.

Congrats Perrin.

I'm glad I read #2..I had enjoyed Trackers #1, but #2 was a can't- put-down-til- finished book.

We get to know the characters so much better here. You can feel the love between Chris and Maisie.

I will be reading the rest of the series.

I was gripped with this book I had to keep reading. I had to go to the shop and do washing and an assignment but I just couldn't put the book down to do it. I can't wait to read the next one. Better start my assignment first though.

Good quick read, fun characters set in dystopian world of the undead. Author loves cliff hangers so be prepared to purchase bundle for the series.

Pretty good read.👍

It's not for everyone, but most between 14-50 years old will find it a pretty good read. Starts out a little odd but if you can get through the first few chapters it gets better and better.

I enjoyed the book very much. The characters are more relate-able for me than the first book. However I still do not like the cliff hanger ending the author likes so much.

I loved this book so much! I mean, after book 1 I was hooked up with this amazing story.
It's a book full of surprises and twists. The development of the story had me turning pages so quick, and sometimes I had to read again some chapters cause I was like: "I think I have a clue of what's going on" But it wasn't like that at all. I surely enjoyed this book and can't wait for book three! If you're looking for an apocalyptic- zombie book THIS SERIES IS THE ONE YOU NEED. My only trouble would be that I didn't agree with some of the timings on the plot, maybe it developed fast. But apart from that, it was an excellent read and I'd definitely read it again. One of the things I loved the most was that in this book you get a better understanding of the characters and how the story goes. Anyway, this book is amazing and it's a five star reading for me. I received this book to give an honest review.

Alright I have to say this book was way better than the first one. Chris really redeemed himself and really tried to be a better father to Maisie. We see how people in his past will become a part of his life now. One character George is someone Chris knows and gives him good advice that he needed to hear. When Maisie is bitten Chris will stop at nothing to find a cure, but will it be too late? She only has 8 hours to live and a lot can happen within those 8 hours. We see a bit more of the zombies within this one which is good. I really liked how it wasn't easy to just go from one place to another. We see that not only does Chris and Maisie deal with the zombies but they also have to deal with humans, not everyone is as helpful as others.
I felt the characters were a lot better this time around. They seemed to know how to handle themselves and the situations that were thrown their way. The plot was steady and action filled. If you read book one and decided it was not the book for you then I say give book two a chance. For me it was a whole lot better than I expected.

Ongoing Excellence!

Book 2 of this series is an excellent continuation of the first book! As Chris continues to try to keep himself and his daughter alive despite a world filled with zombies and Chris filled with his own personal demons every hour becomes more of a struggle than the one before. Many times their survival seems to boil down to nothing more than his love for his daughter, which will either lead to his own personal salvation, or his, and Maisie's, demise... I can't wait to read book 3 and find out who else will live or die in this new world where literally every minute counts!

I found #2 better than #1, partly because the characters had more time to be better developed. The countdown approach of each chapter is a neat approach in this saga. It is a good page turner, but with zombies doing their usual thing, I couldn't really give it more than 3 stars. If you want a good, quick and light adventure read, this trilogy is great value. The 'just in time escapes' started to pall a bit as the story progressed, but, as with zombies, put all logic, science and common sense aside.

I received this in exchange for an honest review - I don't do any other kind!

This is an absolutely cracking sequel!

Action-packed with more awareness and understanding of some characters' previous lives. A page-turner more twisty and turny than that famous twisty, turny street in San Francisco, and a deadline to boot. Your heartstrings will not just be tugged at times, they will be physically yanked from your chest!

Perrin Briar has outdone himself here. Enjoy!

I was offered this second book in the trilogy for free when I joined the author's mailing list. I would have bought this book myself if it hadn't been. It was a terrific following to the first book. It caught me off guard a few times with unexpected twists. I definitely recommend this book to others. It will surprise you in good ways. I am looking forward to getting the third book and reading it.

I could hardly wait to read book two in the series and by the most part found a pleasant read. A little disappointed in the lagging of the story from a recycled plot borrow from another book...or at least it felt that way. What made the story worth reading was the continued relationship being build between father and daughter...as well as the overall lesson in forgiveness and redemption.

What A Great Book
Mr. Briar really wrote a heart wrenching story. You wouldn't think a story about zombies would have so many of life's lessons. I felt so much empathy for the father and his daughter. They both had back stories that really added to the book. Give it a try and see if you're as surprised as I was. I loved this book!

The main character, Chris, is a big douche. Some decisions made in the story were disturbing. Like running over a person (not a zombie) and then his daughter saying that it was fun. Mind you, they noticed the person wasn't a zombie since he spoke and not just groaned and moaned. DNF-ing this.
