Lion Security #2

Obsidian Mask

Rate this book
The best-selling mafia series, by NYT Times bestselling author, Scarlett Dawn, continues with Obsidian Mask, where stakes are raised in passion and devotion--not just guns...

Elizabeth Forter tamed the head of the Russian mafia, Daniil Kozar. Or so she thought. But the mafia has nothing on her parents--the preacher and anti-gun conspirator. The Lion Security team is thrown for a loop when Mr. and Mrs. Forter decided Key West is their next destination to save their daughter from her 'down-slide' into the darker side.

While Elizabeth is busy distracting her overbearing parents...her lover is watching her. Because she lied. And lying to the Russian mafia can only cause groundbreaking shenanigans. The sort of trouble Elizabeth isn't prepared for, ultimately tying her to the gun-waving killers.

Perhaps Elizabeth and Daniil should have watched their backs, instead of each other. Two lovers can be blinded by their own wants. So what happens when the very air you breathe is poisonous? You put on a gas mask...and pray.

Forth re-read: 13.07.2021
The thing is, the part that should be between book one and two isn't there and that smooth transition from one book to the other didn't work. We missed a huge part of the start of their relationship because the author left out the part where they shared the news of their relationship with Daniil's kids. That said, it's still an enjoyable read. I really like Daniil, I truly do. Elizabeth can be annoying at time being a bit childish, but again, it is understandable... on the other hand, she did choose an older man who is the mafia boss..

Third re-read: 15.01.2021
I love alpha males. Daniil is fucking hot.
New Rating - 3.5/3 stars.

Second re-read: 29.01.2020
Since I re-read book one, I had to re-read this one as well. And I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It's interesting, and I love Scarlett Dawn 's alpha males. Same rating as before.
⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*That ending though*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

Re-read: 19.03.2018
The series centers around press/reporter at the Brick Foundation’s event, Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Forter (28) and the head of the Russia mafia, Daniil Kozar (49). They are now exlusive and trying to work out their differences; her anti-guns and violence, and him using guns and violence. There's also the age difference. And Daniil's enemies. Paparazzi hounding them. Family issues. Can their relationship with all the differences work, or will it break them up. Before their enemies do it, that is... Overall, I am extremely nervous for the last and finally book in this series that I haven't read. Specially with how this book ended... Good luck to me. Oh, the book was still good, cute and I love dominant, alpha males. Daniil is that. He's also wise and a good father.
I had just figured out his issues with me. He was of a different generation. One where the women weren’t quite so liberal. And from the sound of it, he was used to no one arguing with him in the first place. Those were his problems, whereas mine were that he was so much more experienced than me—in life—and his reigning violent ‘tendencies.’ “It’s a good thing the sex is so extraordinary; otherwise, I think we’d both wise the fuck up.”

Other characters:
Grigori ‘Jake Donnally’ Kozar (33), son of Daniil. And is together with Ember.
Eva Kozar, daughter of Daniil.
Roman Kozar, son of Daniil.
Artur Kozar, son of Daniil.
Zane Harris, one of the owners of their company, Lion Security (the top security company in the United States)
Stash Bailey, a co-owner of Lion Security.
Ember Lerrus, a co-owner of Lion Security. Has twin daughters; Nikki and Beth.
↦ Beth's parents, James Forter, the preacher and Franke Forter, a director for one of the largest anti-gun coalition companies in the United States.
Mary (19), Beth's cousin (aunt Susan's daughter).
Katie, Beth's cousin (aunt Ella’s daughter).
Kirill, a Russian friend of the Kozar’s
Chloe, an employee of Lion Security and Kirill’s girlfriend
Cole Donovan and Brent Terrance, was in a relationship with Ember. Are also dads to Ember's twins.
Trofim ‘Least Ugly’, bodyguard.
Bas, Peter (don't remember who they are), and married couple (I think), Carl and Anna; friends of the family Kozar?
“Sometimes the truth is best kept quiet. Too many innocents get hurt when it rears its fatal head.”

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance.
Series: - Series, Book Two.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Daniil Kozar.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Sure.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure.
Will I read this again in the future? - Probably.
New Rating - 3.5 stars.

I loved the first book in this series mostly because it was funny, the group dynamic really worked, he had a massive penis and the poking was hot.

Bit I'm not sure what exactly happened here. Parts were confusing because so many side characters were involved, their love story running alongside the main one. It was hard to remember who was together and keep things clear. This also affected the main story development a bit for me because Daniil and Elizabeth didn't have that many scenes alone. That leads me to the sex (or lack of). It's cruel making me wait so long to read about him impaling her on his giant cock again. We get two pretty detailed scenes with another couple 'getting it on' while Elizabeth is hidden in the room with them, but none from the main pair until the 65% mark.

Yes yes, I know it's not all about the sex and the story needed developing, but as I mentioned above, there was a lot going on but with nothing actually happening, until right at the end. The whole thing felt a bit like a filler book to puff the story out more. So, while I enjoyed it overall, it did lack in any major story development for me.

There's no doubt I'll read the next one because I love this author's writing, and though I'm a little disappointed with this book, I do still love Daniil and Elizabeth.

Beth and Daniil's story continues after the rocky start they had in the first book.

Daniil Kozar is a man in his late forties that happens to be the head of the Russian mafia. He's a killer but also a hot piece of ass for a men that's almost fifty...and like any good looking man...a little vain too :P

description

After a drunk hock-up with Elizabeth Forter, a reported that was after a story involving one of his sons, he decides he what more then one night with her...but then the bomb drops and Beth tell him...

description

How can a cut throat reporter and a mafia boss be together? Can she give up her world for him? Can he change for her? Is there really a future for them?

description

I loved that the author has the ability to tell the story of other couples ass well and all through Beth eyes...that even see a little to more than she's supposed too :P

description

Curious? Pick up the books and read them ;)

I unequivocally L.O.V.E.D. Reading Obsidian Mask!

Russian mafia leader, Daniil Kozar is now in a relationship with pop journalist and minister's daughter, Elizabeth Forter. If that doesn't make for interesting reading then maybe you should come meet the rest of the family.

Sexy, fun, fast, and outrageously humorous family dynamics, Obsidian Mask is undoubtedly hitting my re-read worthy shelf. Actually as soon as I read the last page I wanted to re-read both Obsidian Liquor and Obsidian Mask back to back. Yes, it definitely had that WOW factor.

I'm anxiously awaiting more of the Kozar and Forter clans Ms. Dawn.

I received this copy of Obsidian Mask from Scarlett Dawn in exchange for a honest review.

Why do you do these things to me, Scarlett?!? Crazy cliff hanger, and now I need the next one..like, pronto!

**FULL REVIEW**

“You do realize if your father or mother finds out you’re having sex with the head of the Russian Mafia, they will ship you off to another country, don’t you?”

When you pick up a Scarlett Dawn book, you don’t simply read it. You dive head-first into an abyss of originality and a world one could not even fathom to dream up on their own. It doesn’t matter the genre, or even the story (although, that’s part of the allure), it’s the characters. It’s the chemistry, the conversation, the uncanny wit and drama that unfolds before your very eyes. Reading a Scarlett Dawn book is an experience, not just a pass-time.

Now, onto the Russian Mafia…

Daniil and Elizabeth. Those two could not be any more different. She’s the light to his dark, the saint to his sinner. But, you know what they say about opposites attracting? Elizabeth and Daniil are like two magnets: flip them one way and they can’t avoid each other hard enough…but flip them over, and there’s no tearing them apart.

But what happens when Elizabeth’s family—a pastor and anti-gun rally-woman—decide to meddle in their daughter’s life? Decide that the decisions she’s making, as an adult, are not good enough…or that they will somehow tarnish her family’s reputation?

“I stood there staring. I wasn’t sure for how long, but he twisted the coffee cup around in his hand repeatedly until he tilted his head, his gaze directly on me. And I realized he was waiting for me. Alone in the world…and waiting…for me.”

Sometimes it’s not about what your family wants for you, but what you want for you, consequences be damned. Elizabeth has lived a life of exploiting people’s weaknesses through her crass words in the media, but this time she’s the one being used. Only now, she has a little more to hide…and a lot more to lose.

GAH! Talk about a cliffhanger…Dawn never disappoints when it comes to keeping me on the edge of my seat, wanting more but having to wait like the impatient child I am. This book was no exception. I was shown an entirely new world and I want to know what happens next. I NEED to know what happens next! I’m invested, after just one book (because I somehow missed the first one—I now have to go back to read it), and I cannot wait for the next!

The story of the main characters would be around 3.5 stars but I had to take some off because the author tried to make us care about other relationships of the hero's children but we still know basically nothing about them except their names so I just don't care. The author really needs to work on giving details of side characters if they are going to be part of the story, it's so confusing when the story acts like we know things we were never told.

The main characters' relationship was decent, they were cute together but I just don't buy that a Russian mob boss would act like Danill, when is he ever doing anything mob related? He just seems to hang out in his house with all of his adult kids, the heroine and her kooky parents and he and the heroine act a bit like teenagers. There were parts of the story I liked but a few that annoyed me. I will probably read the next one just to find out what happens but I thought the $4.99 price tag a bit much for what I got in this story so hopefully the next one is cheaper.

Wow.
When it comes to romance books I’m usually completely uninterested in stories that take more than one book to finish. I like reading series that follow different characters in the same universe sometimes, but always avoid the ones that are about the same couple. Finding that I’m dissatisfied with the first books and have no interest continuing.
With this series I had the complete opposite reaction. The first book was funny and fast paced and kept me engaged the entire way through, and I had no clue that there would be more to their story when it was done.
And most of the time the second book for a series like this is the book their relationship falls apart and they realize they moved too fast. This wasn’t that and I am so thankful.
This book had all of that same humor, and the fast pacing, and I couldn’t bring myself to put it down for a second. It didn’t fall into that cliche I mentioned, instead, just getting them deeper into the life they are sharing and allowing us to watch them get closer to each other as they learn more and grow together. And honestly it took real discipline on my part to finish the book on that cliffhanger she left it at and write this review instead of immediately downloading the third one, and getting my damn answers.
The only reason it’s not a 5 star book is because I hate a damn cliffhanger. So if you’ll excuse me. I’m going to go download that next book now and get my damn answers.

I love this book.
I really enjoyed watching them meet in the first book and the crazy shit they did and got out through.
But watching them grow together not only as a couple but as humans, and fall in love in this book, was So much fun.
So much damn fun.

The romance between Daniil and Beth has to be one of the sweetest ones I’ve ever read.
They’re absolutely adorable together and I love their relationship so fucking much.
I couldn’t help but smile throughout big chunks of this book, as they help each other grow and find their happiness.
The sweetness is intoxicating.
It makes that ending just That much more heartbreaking.
I really love this series.
I wish we got Daniil’s POV throughout, and more steamy scenes with them instead of the ones with the side characters, but otherwise, it’s a total favorite of mine.
The humor, the love, the growth, it’s just everything I wanted.

I love SD's full length novels. Her writing is so addictively engaging. I've read every single one of her books in one day. There's been many early AM finishes before work. She's THAT kind of author. If you haven't read her forever evermore series, I would start there and work your way around. She is erotic fantasy. And when I say erotic, I mean don't let anyone read over your shoulder ;)

There's just too much baby/pregnancy/eating in this book. Nothing is happening, at all. The Heroine who's pregnant with triplet is constantly eating so much, and everyone is talking "baby" and she's overly emotional and irritating all the time. It was cute at first, but then got boring.

The Hero lost his attractiveness. He's not the mafia badass anymore. It feels like he changed overnight to a overprotective momma bear. His mind is on the babies all the time. And the things he does is just over the top. Bribing the doctor to tell him the gender of the babies for 40.000 Dollars. Which he had in his wallet. So convenient. Or ordering all his bodyguards into the hospital room to hear the babies heart beats.

Then there was more drama with Ember and her guys and her kids. It was all over the book. And she's such a minor secondary character. She isn't even one of the Heroes' daughters. I haven't figured out how she fits in.

And on top of that there were some grammatical errors and Daniil was a Daniel once. Oh well.

I just couldn't take this story seriously. I know it's fiction and I have no Idea about living with a Mafia-boss, but some things are just way over the top. And when these things happen I loose my interest.

One thing positive is that the Hero isn't a manwhore, was faithful to his deceased and cheating wife, and is now faithful to the Heroine. He doesn't even look at other woman. He only sees the Heroine and that was so sweet.

OH MY F-ING WORD...cliffy.

I knew there was going to a third part to Daniil and Beth but couldn't there be a happily ever after for now instead of a dog gone cliffy.

This part was good. His family and her family together had me laughing out loud. There's more back story to the whole Ember, Grigori, Cole and Brent drama.

July is too far away.....

ARC received from author for an honest review

Obsidian Mask continues on where Obsidian Liquor ended, so you will need to have read it first.

Wow, there is a lot going on in this installment of the Lion Security series!

Beth's life has never been dull, but things have certainly ramped up since she became involved with Daniil, head of the Russian mafia! HMS Relationship is going full steam ahead!

Obsidian Mask has a bit of everything. Love. Laughter. Violence. Happy tears. Sad tears. Whilst it is mainly based around Beth and Daniil, other family and relationships are also brought to the foreground.

It is also a lot more emotional than book 1, Obsidian Liquor - I may have shed a couple of tears. There were some wonderful, D & M conversations had in this book.

Just as things were getting real interesting - we were cliffhangered (though having read Ms Dawn's other works, this did not come as too much of a surprise to me).

I am really looking forward to seeing where Ms Dawn takes Beth and Daniil's story in book 3, Obsidian Music.

This series is one of the reasons I love Scarlett Dawn so much. She can go from writing paranormal to mafia romance and everything else in between with ease. No matter what the genre is, I always have loved each book/series.

I have to quote Vanessa on Goodreads because she put my thoughts on every book by Scarlett Dawn into the perfect words:

“When you pick up a Scarlett Dawn book, you don’t simply read it. Reading a Scarlett Dawn book is an experience, not just a pass-time.”

Obsidian Mask was no exception. We are back in the world of Elizabeth and Daniil. We have all of the characters we have grown to know (and begrudgingly love in some cases) plus Scarlett brings in some new characters from Elizabeth’s family. Each new character adds their own layer of personality to the story and brings a new level of drama as we start to explore the family dynamics that Elizabeth has grown up with. Her mother and father can stop a fierce gun toting mafia member in their tracks with a lecture that will have others in the group snickering until their gazes fall on that person.

Through Beth’s eyes we get to explore other relationships of other characters and I can’t wait to see where some of those relationships go as the series continues.

I loved watching Elizabeth’s and Daniil’s relationship grow and see where it would go throughout the story. We had a huge surprise that I personally didn’t even think might appear in this book when I picked it up. Speaking of that surprise, SCARLETT DAWN, how can you leave me hanging like that at the end? I want the next book in the series like yesterday.

Obsidian Mask had everything I expected from a book from Scarlett Dawn: amazing deep characters, a fabulous storyline full of twists and turns, drama, and hot scenes between my favorite characters. I absolutely loved this. 5 stars from me!

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

*I received a free copy from the author for an unbiased review*

This is a great continuation to the previous book, Obsidian Liquor. Period.

Where to start? At the beginning, I think?

The book cover depicts Daniil perfectly. Did I say that already? I don't remember anything except the adorable tale.Yes, I used the word adorable to describe a book with a Mafia protagonist. I am still sighing over the romantic chemistry of Beth and Daniil.. and others too. I know I am gushing but I seriously can't help. I think I can read this any day at any time. This is a totally feel good book, in my opinion.

The book starts without any hiccups at the place where the first book one ends. And sets up the characters for a hilarious unfolding of events. If I thought Beth and Daniil with his family were laughter inducing, it's nothing compared to the entry of her parents and family. I was giggling non stop. Though there are a few serious events taking place, they get undermined by the overall goodness of the tale.

Beth has kind of surprised me with her behaviour, though it is hormone induced while Daniil shows a totally new side to him. I saw him as a tough guy in the first book and this book introduced me to his familial and tender side. He made me go "awwwww" more times than I can count. As for the other characters, only Beth's parents were memorable and had me cringing alongside Beth with their actions.

As I had earlier noted in the previous book's review, there are a number of subplots and they are progressing fairly at a steady rate while new ones are added in this book too. I hope they each get their own book because I am sure they will be worth reading.

I don't know about others but I totally am into this series and can't wait for the next book. I am sure it will be just as charming. Do I need to recommend the book more??

My one line review : A totally feel good charming and hilarious romance makes the perfect continuation to the series.

My rating : 5/5

My reread factor : 5/5

Well damn...... Another one of Scarlett Dawns books that I will read over and over again.... Ms Dawn weaves an amazing story that has you hooked from the very first page and makes it so you have no other option but to fall in love.... This book just has something so special about it that I can't even describe... You have to read it to understand.... This author should be so very proud of the books she has written... She has an amazing talent.... I can't wait to see what is next for daniil and Beth and of course the rest of the crew ( you can't help but love them all)... So read away people.... Scarlett Dawn has done it again. This book had everything, from making me laugh out loud, to feeling my heart break at some of Daniil's past. Right to the very last page of this book I was hooked. (well until I reached the end and found a blood cliff-hanger)
This book some very good twists and turns that kept me reading page after page until I had finished it in one sitting. Mrs Scarlett Dawn you have managed to hit the ball right out of the park with this one and given me my new fave book of yours.
So pick it up and fall in love all over again with Daniil and his Beth.

One of the best books ever!

I loved every minute. I kept checking to see how long I had left. Getting SD's newsletter this morning was like opening my present at Christmas! This is the most lovable, gun toting, dysfunctional Russian family. And when you toss in the Preacher's daughter and her family, needless to say, I have had one of the most enjoyable Saturdays. This book has made me happy. Worth every penny and then some.

Much better than book 1, characters fleshed out much more, however, there were some times I was left scratching my head when things were mentioned about the characters that had not been mentioned before and assumed the reader already knew. That was a tad frustrating, but most frustrating and detracting was the consistent incorrect use of there and they're, seriously annoying. Still a good story though.

I do not give up on books easily, but this is really corny as hell and did not give me a single new aspect to interest me.

I might return to it when I'm in a more generous mood, but for now I don't want to waste my time on it when I can read a better book.

Okay, I’m throwing in the towel… I’m exasperated and bored which is a shame because I enjoyed the first instalment. BUT… If I could describe this book in one word it would be FORCED.

It all felt forced..The chemistry and the slapstick humour with everybody staring and going silent and generally reacting on queue whenever Daniil and Elizabeth had a moment… It was funny at first but then it got a bit ridiculous. It was almost as if somebody was standing in the scenes holding up a queue card telling the rest of the characters when to react like the wedding in Shrek. *sigh*

I’m curious to know how it ends but if it’s going how I think it’s going I’m sure it’s going to be fairly predictable.

Safe to say I’m done with this series and I think I’ve learned my lesson. I’m only going to read PNR/Fantasy from SD in the future.✌🏽

I am really disappointed with this book. It wasn’t because the story was horrible—although it wasn’t great because it lacked the sexual tension and plot structure that the first had—it was the grammar that was so distracting. All I could think at multiple points was that good lord, someone needs to get this lady a book on homophones and a lesson on semicolons. And this really surprised me because her later series (Trixie Towers) does not, from what I remember, have these glaring grammatical/structural problems. I would have given it one star, but I did finish the book, and for me that warrants another star.

Obsidian Mask...

Super Fanfreakingtastic read. Ok, my mind is blown. And this cliffhanger at the end kicks major ass. The characters in this book is complex but oh so worthy of digging deeper. The mask everyone (figuratively) wears in this book has crazy levels of WTF. This book is action packed, sexy, heartfelt, intense drama with so many questionable twists and turns. I love it and can't wait for the next one.

almost four stars

As the second book in the trilogy, the story had a lot more depth but there were still just too many typos and editing needs to give it more stars. There were some funny elements and so much drama. It was like watching a satirical soap opera on the brink of death but you gotta watch to see what's going to happen next before it's canceled.
There is a big cliffhanger at the end and it's enough to make you want to finish the series.
On to the next...

Great read!

Though the editing could be better the story, characters and humor pulled me in. I loved how Beth and Daniil’s relationship progressed. They sorted things out and even learn a few new things.
And Beth is learning especially how to get her way with her man when she really needs too.
Also I cannot wait to see her babies and what the genders are. But with all the “it’s a Boy” talk I’m not even going to be surprised if all of them are boys.

This entry in the series was a little better than the first installment and kept me more entertained. There are still references to events in the past not in the story which can be confusing. Very funny in some parts and the story seems more cohesive.
