This is the book that ruined all other books for me- it's just that fucking good.
Starting off, Baek Deoksoo is already an amazing writer who wrote the literary masterpiece known as Debut or Die (has a manhwa adaption and the novel is fucking good btw). If you read Debut or Die, you know how damn realistic it is when it comes to the idol scene. You also know how good the writing and plot is. If you haven't read Debut or Die, I suggest it if you liked this work.
Summary:
Kim Soleum is a ghost story (creepypasta) obsessed coward and a slave to capitalism. Unlike many other lonely ahh protagonists, Kim Soleum has a loving (?) family, friends, and coworkers. Just like me reading web novels every chance I get, Kim Soleum reads ghost stories during breaks at work.
There's just one issue- he might be obsessed with ghost stories, but he's a complete coward. He's the type of person who turns off images and reads the Darkness Exploration Records with the lights on.
The Darkness Exploration Records quickly grow to become something immensely popular among teenagers. Thus, Kim Soleum attended a pop-up store, unluckily getting transported into the world of the Ghost Stories he loves.
Each and every character is essential to the plot, plays a role, and actually has a personality- they aren't just boring, 2 dimensional, characters that can't do anything but make the main character look better. In fact, they're likable. Oh, especially Braun; I love the way he's written. He has so many human characteristics yet says things that remind us that he's really just a supernatural being.
The plot is really amazing- there are so many twists, things brought back from early chapters that leave me hanging in shock. The progression itself isn't insanely quick, nor is it very slow that it spends 50+ chapters on a single arc. It's perfect, progresses smoothly, and every word, action, and thing that takes place isn't just forgotten.
The writing doesn't spend paragraphs trying to explain what's going on- in my opinion, it's concise, and what matters is that it works. Overall, I prefer this kind of style over the paragraphs in LoM or ORV, but that's a personal point.
The horror is pretty well written as well. Once I was reading this at 2 a.m. and got really freaking scared (Looky Mart arc)
This is probably my favorite book OAT (as of chapter 371) and tops SS, LoM, ORV, RVRW, Infinite Regressor, YHBD, DI, and so much more. If you know those abbreviations, you know.
Regardless, this is #1 in my book and probably one of the most enjoyable reads in a long time.
It's so good, I promise you won't regret reading it. I only regret not reading it earlier.

GSGW Part 1 (Chapters 1-208) | Rating: 4.5 stars

GSGW piqued my interest because the idea of going from reading creepypastas to being forced to experience and survive in them was intriguing, and I was curious how a premise like this would be written - and boy, it did not disappoint.
The beginning of Part 1 started off a bit slow and the story didn't have much depth besides his goal of finding a way home, but it was interesting in the sense that Kim Soleum (KSE) knew bits and pieces of information about the world of the Darkness Exploration Records that he fell into. The ways KSE managed to apply his knowledge in abstract ways in various ghost stories, and his strategies and ways of thinking were unique and entertaining to read.
I also liked how KSE doesn't have major plot armor and still gets affected by the ghost stories. It's especially captivating when he gets contaminated because his narration shifts, and you'd have to be paying attention as a reader to pick up on his subtle change in monologue and realise that he's likely been contaminated. An example of this is when he had come out of the Hungry Hangman Darkness, which revolved around the role of kindergarten teachers and rulebooks. KSE's thoughts focused on following the rules more, and I hadn't noticed this until Lee Jaheon suddenly urged him to visit the counselling office to cleanse the contamination. The reveal that KSE still had the kindergarten handbook and it was slowly contaminating him took me by surprise!
The latter half of Part 1 shifts the tone of the story in a slightly different direction, with ghost stories going from revenue missions to rescue missions, and there was a stark contrast in the company KSE is surrounded with. In Daydream Inc, it felt like an 'every man for himself' environment (except for Squad D), whereas the Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) was so warm and accommodating. I especially started enjoying the story more after he joined the DMB, and Agent Choi and Agent Bronze easily became some of my favourite characters.
As the story progressed, the depth of the plot deepened and there was an increasing amount of mysteries and reveals. The plot twist that KSE might not be human and his consciousness was summoned into a scientifically engineered monstrous 'Good Friend' body was crazy to me. I knew things weren't going to be easy for our main character, but I didn't expect it to be on that level. My jaw was dropping as I was reading the events unfold! There were other surprising moments like when Choi found out KSE was a spy. When this event transpired, so many things changed. The sense of despair from being found out, the feeling of being betrayed by Braun and referring to him as just a plush doll, and KSE not caring about what happens anymore and just wanting to die highlighted just how human KSE is. He's not an MC that's always mentally strong and confident. This shift felt really realistic and it was one of the many moments where I appreciated how well Baek Deoksoo writes.
Despite the slow start to the novel, each ghost story arc was very different to one another and it always captivated me - leaving me on the edge of my seat, wondering what's going to happen next and what KSE will do to get out of the situation alive. My favourite Darkness' and Disasters in Part 1 are the Tamra Express, Looky Mart, and Twinkle Twinkle Ocean Palace/Mermaid's Grave! I also loved the Glass Prison arc because it was pretty heavy on angst, which I really enjoy. KSE suffering through the interrogations, and Choi and Bronze feeling confilicted, guilty, and upset that this was happening to him was a treat to read for me.
On the flip side, I didn't find the writing to be perfect. A gripe I have is that the author tries to establish that KSE is a coward and make that a main trait of his, but its executed pretty poorly. He tends to have cowardly monologue, but then his real actions reflect none of this cowardice and instead he comes off as cool and composed, which is pretty far-fetched. As for the story, the overarching plot isn't too special, as it boils down to KSE wanting to go home.
However, despite my gripes, I still really enjoyed Part 1 of GSGW and it never failed to keep me entertained. The characters are great and there are a lot of morally grey, but still likable ones as well. Kim Soleum is a smart and entertaining main character to follow and I'm excited to see what happens in Part 2!

Part 2 of GSGW was amazing from start to finish. The plot got thicker, mysteries got deeper, stakes were higher, and characters became even more lovable and fleshed out. I love how Baek Deoksoo leaves no plot holes and masterfully plants information throughout the story, only to dig them back up a long time later, revealing their significance in the story in the later chapters. Every time this happens, it's such a shocking and reflective feeling. I loved the entire process of trying to connect the dots, and being left gob-smacked at reveals and plot twists!
I really enjoyed the angst right off the bat in the beginning of Part 2. From the monologue of KSE's thoughts being slightly off, given his state of mind as 130666, to the feeling of anticipation from waiting for KSE to reunite with the agents. I want to highlight the author's skill in writing KSE's monologue again, because as a reader, you can tell when things are off and KSE isn't in his right mind. It helps the experience and immersion a lot.
The bigger picture of the plot is explored in Part 2 and it's so interesting, especially with how KSE was summoned, what went wrong, the events of the day of disaster in Sekwang City, and how KSE is tied to the Disaster. The majority of Part 2 revolves around Sekwang City and reading it felt like playing a video game, with the different stations and Cheerful Research Institute labs - each area having its own subplot and mystery to be uncovered, and finding out how all the events that happened during exploration were linked to clearing the Sekwang City Disaster. It also shone more light on the DMB, revealing that they're not solely a pure and good faction. They've got a good side through their agents, but they've also got corruption through their higher-ups with how they tried to keep the truth behind the Sekwang City Disaster hidden. There were also big reveals hinting at a time loop, with KSE being the one to give Ho Yuwon his name, and also the one who inspired Bronze to become a DMB agent!
While the plot was amazing in Part 2, the real spotlight was on the development of the characters. For starters, the Scales Tribunal arc allowed KSE to come to terms with how he perceived himself and accept his contaminations as part of him instead of making him less human. Lee Gyeol, who had minimal screen time compared to the rest of the cast, still became a fan-favourite. Director Ho, who was a big antagonist in Part 1, became one of the most loved characters, and his backstory was masterfully woven into the narrative. But one of the biggest character developments came from Baek Saheon. His contrasting softness and fondness for Agent Grapes was so endearing to read and I was smiling throughout their interactions every time. His development revealed that deep down, he knew that Agent Grapes was KSE but he was too in-denial to confirm it with his eye. I liked how even though he had that suspicion, he still treated Grapes fondly in a tsundere way and was slowly becoming a better person from Grapes's influence.
The fleshing out of so many characters shows how well Baek Deoksoo can write and build characters. The whole sequence of KSE working for Director Ho, then working with Ho Yuwon of the Sekwang City Disaster, to the point of Ho Yuwon sacrificing himself to save KSE as he nearly died from being crushed was genuinely pure cinema. It's amazing how Ho Yuwon left varying deep impressions to the readers in every part of the story for different reasons.
The conclusion to the Sekwang City Disaster arc was bittersweet, and the ending of Part 2 seemed like an actual novel ending with KSE finally returning home. I'm glad it wasn't truly the end because I found myself quickly missing the rest of the cast dearly.
It's unpredictable what's going to happen in Part 3, but I'm looking forward to finding out more about the phone number from the beginning, who Lee Kangheon is, and what happens to KSE's body, which is still technically in the ghost story world. The Part 3 possibilities are endless!

I just finished part 1 and HOLY SHIT I feel bad for the people that haven’t read this because every second of it was genuinely so fun.
I just finished it and am still in shock, what the fuck do you mean is Soleum really made in the dream incubation lab? And WHAT THE FUCK DIRECTOR CHEONG DALLAE I DON’T THINK I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THAT CONTRACT WAS JUST NOW…
Man I want to start part 2 quickly cause how did all of this get revealed in THE LAST CHAPTER.
Well, I just wanna say this was so well written. Like I hate to admit it but they kind of got me during the contaminations. I also really like the story because the situations could get so unexpected and interesting while being explained thoroughly. You could also see a lot of the main characters thought process which really helped with matching reason with action.
I also want to add that the characters are really cool, because there are so many but everyone of them really has their own personality and background. I really loved Braun, J3, agent bronze, agent Choi, Baek Saheon (funniest interactions fr), Lee Jaheon, Eun Haje, Park Minseong, Go Yeongeon, Jang Heowoon 💔 (pls come back).
The only downside is that it’s impossible to pick a favourite.
Director ho, mixed feelings. Like he has a cool fox counseling office but I hate his stupid binding restrictions, BUT I have hope for him since my friend told me he’s her favourite (curious to see if part 2 can change my mind…)
I also think Jin Nasol (butterfly) and Lee Seonghae (dolphin) might play a bigger role in part 2 hmmm

I also really like the story because the situations could get so unexpected and interesting while being explained thoroughly. You could also see a lot of the main characters thought process which really helped with matching reason with action.
I also want to add that the characters are really cool, because there are so many but everyone of them really has their own personality and background. I really loved Braun, J3, agent bronze, agent Choi, Baek Saheon (funniest interactions fr), Lee Jaheon, Eun Haje, Park Minseong, Go Yeongeon, Jang Heowoon 💔 (pls come back).
The only downside is that it’s impossible to pick a favourite.
Director ho, mixed feelings. Like he has a cool fox counseling office but I hate his stupid binding restrictions, BUT I have hope for him since my friend told me he’s her favourite (curious to see if part 2 can change my mind…)
I also think Jin Nasol (butterfly) and Lee Seonghae (dolphin) might play a bigger role in part 2 hmmm

I finally, finally finished Part 2. I spent so many nights binge-reading, but it took so long for me to finish it because I didn’t want to say good bye to the characters. I love everyone so much. 🥲 Cried and laughed and got scared and cried some more…
This might be my favorite light novel—I felt like it was made for me specifically. There are so many things I could say, but I’m just happy that I get to exist in a time when I can read this. That’s how much I love it.

I really adore this story.
Kim Soleum is brought into a world where he is an employee at Daydream Inc., who explore ghost stories. The very explorations of ghost stories that he loved reading about in Darkness Exploration Records: Prophecy of Apocalypse. The only problem is he can only handle text based horror, otherwise he's scared (almost) stiff.
Joining the company Kim Soleum uses his knowledge of the exploration records to help him find a way out of these ghost stories and back home.
Unfortunately for him, he's too competent at his job and is continuously faced with horrifying ghost stories and coworkers who can be more horrifying than the stories themselves.
I think that this story executes the concept really well, it takes this horror aspect of the story and gives it a comedic twist, without compromising the fact that these ghost stories are horrifying and people can and do get hurt, corrupted, die, or go missing. And it's always a treat to see how Kim Soleum will clear the stories, saving everyone that he can, especially when it seems impossible.
One of the reasons that I like this story is because it's similar to my favorite book in the fact that it's made of a lot of different details that may seem to be irrelevant at first, but come together to make the story richer.
I also love all of the characters, all of them are interesting and unique and I love seeing all of them interact with the ghost stories and each other.
The experience of reading this story was also very fun, since it takes a while to read, which allows you to ruminate on it, and come up with your own thoughts and theories about what's going on.
I'm looking forward to seeing where the rest of the story continues, as it's been very good throughout the entire read, a gripping page turner that I never wanted to set down, I can only imagine that the rest will be just as good. I impaitently await the next part.

this book has officially ruined every other book i will read from now on this year. from the start til the end it was pure perfection and i love myself for picking it up. i want the whole part 3 to drop rn but i also want to take it slow and treasure this masterpiece. lets see what the future journey unfolds🌟

Caught up to latest-ish chapter as of this time (ch. 405). Spoilers up to part 3, technically.
9/10 overall up until this point. Very fun, especially for those who enjoy things like SCPs or even creepypasta, with memorable arcs and characters. I think the thematic progression is also pretty good too. There's a lot I could get into about the progression of Kim Soleum's self from building protective personas to accepting vulnerability, or the motifs about the omnipresence of discomfort in the world and how people persist, build communities, and problem-solve despite it, or even what "good people" are as of part 3*. But for now I will leave this short. Recommend as a good long yet casual read that still encourages you to engage with the text.
*Speculation, but courtesy of what seems like supernatural Lee Seonghae, her desire to kill all "bad people", and the drastic character development of Baek Saheon, who has gone from "self-interested fearing-for-his-life guilty-conscience backstabber" to "bothered skeptic who has an received unconditional act of kindness and wants to believe in goodness but fears it will get him killed". This man once gauged a young man's eye, but has become significantly gentler and now wants to help keep an important person of his alive. How would someone like him be judged according to Lee Seonghae's extreme polarized worldview? Who knows and I'm very excited to see if it goes anywhere.

An absolutely fantastic read. I initially started with the manhwa as it was a horror manhwa and I was in the mood for a good scare. After finishing the manhwa and needing more Kim Soleum, I decided to read the webnovel and omg I was hooked.
It is amazing! It shifts between 1st POV for Kim Soleum and 3rd POV for his friends. The writing style is also more of short sentences as it’s translated from Korean and the writing methods are not the same as when writing in EN. Easy to read and author is really good at delivering scares.
The plot is also so interesting. Involves the isekai trope with a twist. It’s basically about our MC who finds himself transported into a horror world and now he has to survive. He tries his best to find his way home. Initially the story focuses on how he survives each horror instance and later there’s a mystery involving the MC being in the horror world. The tension and stakes in the novel is constantly increasing and not everyone survives. It’s a very intense read at times.
One of my fave characters is also Braun and he’s a gaslighty manipulative b*stard and I love his presence in the novel. Lots of other great side characters too. You’ll want to root for their survival and you’ll also be upset when they end up contaminated/dying. No spoilers hehe.
Would highly recommend this webnovel for those who like reading KR webnovels.

This isn't your typical Isekai story. Kim appears into an SCP type of world where ghost stories are real and everyone is forced to deal with them whether or not they want to. He decides to work for one of the foremost companies that deals with these stories in hope of eventually receiving a "Wish potion" which can bring him back to his original world in Korea.
Kim, being a huge coward with a love of horror stories, worms his way into the company and quickly discovers that he's amazing at the job, due to his deep knowledge of the stories themselves.
While there hasn't been romance in what I've read so far, the story isn't lacking at all in emotional connection. Kim is a great human who causes others to drift towards him, including the very SCP entities that he's terrified of.
Braun is one such entity and arguably my favorite character in the entire series. I absolutely love how deeply the author writes the relationships in this story and can't help but get caught up in it. I have loved every bit of what I've read and only find it getting better as I go on despite how long the book is.
I would happily have this series on my bookshelf.

I fear Baek Deoksu may be the brightest mind of our generation because what do you mean they wrote demotjuk AND gsgw?? Admittedly I don't think this hit for me quite as much as dmj but I still really enjoyed reading it. The author really has a talent for writing engaging characters, and creates such a rich cast that you will definitely find a favourite no matter what kind of character you prefer. Kim Soleum is truly an iconic main character, and I could just list 90% of the cast as my other stand outs. The ending of part one is insane just truly. The horror aspect is also really interestingly done. Kim Soleum feels really overpowered at first but as the stakes increase I was almost taken aback by how brutal the narrative was willing to get. Every time I read BDS's writing I'm always like 'ah this is so drawn out, what's with all the filler' only to be later hit over the head by the realisation that everything was necessary and has been building towards something. Turns out all 4 thousand pages were indeed relevant to the plot and character arcs and I will absolutely read 3 thousand more for part 2.

Looooove it! So, so good. I love the spooky vibes. The storyline is really unique and interesting. Even though it's really long and it's at chapter 300-something, it's still really interesting and it doesn't get boring at all! I love the characters, the world-building, and honestly everything. I love the fact that as a reader, we can also challenge our minds and try to solve the mysteries along with the MC. I could go on and on, honestly I think it's one of my favorite books that I've ever read, and I will keep reading it and tuning in to every update!
The only thing that I don't really like is the manhwa adaptation. Honestly, I don't think it's doing the characters or the world justice. I think the art style doesn't really go with this story and doesn't do it justice, and it doesn't translate or show how truly scary and terrifying the darkness/monsters/employees hhh are. I think an art style similar to the art style of Ghost Song (also known as 유령의 노래, Phantom Whispers, A Haunted Song, Dead Voice) would have matched better. But either way, I love the book and I hope the author makes a lot of money!! Thank you for giving us such a good body of work.

This is the first Korean novel that made me feel all sorts of emotions—ranging from genuine horror and anxiety to immense heartache, alongside heartwarming bonds between characters that brought so many smiles. It was such a fun read that completely consumed my weeks. Now that it's on hiatus, I'm waiting patiently for new chapters. I really love and adore this series so much that my heart aches just thinking about it ending, truly never want it to end. Words are not even enough to describe how I feel, but all I can say is that I would give anything to experience reading it for the first time again. Easily nominating this as my current all-time favorite series ever!

A bit of an indulgent review, due to the very different prose in the translation I got my hands on than regular books.
The ideas are derivative of the SCP universe, but are coherent and fresh enough to feel like their own thing, and the characters are interesting enough that it keeps things fresh.

GSGW is so PEAK!!! I was immediately hooked by the humour and how clever everything is. When I hit page 29 I knew I was going to love this story. Kim Soleum is a very lovable character and the whole cast is great! The formatting is also super cool. GSGW also has a manhwa adaptation!
If you like ORV/KDJ and are okay with horror, I think you would enjoy GSGW!

Encima hoy perdió Inglaterra (lloro por Jude Bellingham) y estaba triste y recordé que debía terminar gsgw, simplemente salí traumada con ese contrato de mierda.

TBH... The ghost stories in first chapters is everyday thing to be seen in some local movies but the approach that MC take towards these is interesting and the way the stories became more intense really every chapter is a surprise.
The poker face of MC and the misunderstanding because of that will always be my favourite part.

No other book I read until now made me feel this many emotions, It was so easy for me to get attached to characters and cry over them(fyi the only time I ever cried before while reading a book was when a cat died). Love this , tho is there any Recc like this but like series of book. I really want something with overwork employee? I already listen to magnus archive. And I don't think he is ever going home they never do. And hope my stock doesn't crush even tho it already did once.

Not even surprised by how much I loved this book. I think Soleum deserves a vacation and some well-needed therapy. Long-ass book but somehow I still want more. I was genuinely scared for him many times during this book like it got very dark

Part 1 was really great, if I was just rating that section it would be five stars.
Part 2 had stellar moments for sure, but lost its momentum in some areas.
Full thoughts once part 3 is out and I've finished it!
3 stars seems too low so 4 stars for now.

Addictive, just addictive!!! Keeps you on your toes with entertaining horrors and a colorful cast of characters mixed in with the casual indifference of modern-day capitalism. If you can, read it in its original form because the syntax/formatting adds so much!!!!
