Major Harry Sterling has had to leave his regiment after the death of his father and brother. Now, Duke of Ranliegh, it is his duty to marry without delay. His friend, Captain Atterton, makes a surprise appearance and the men are drawn into a web of treachery. Someone is supplying secrets to Napoleon, and Harry discovers that his brother did not die in an accident, but was murdered. The investigation proves dangerous and the elderly duchess is fearful that her grandson will be killed before he has produced an heir. The girl she has chosen is too timid for the volatile ex-soldier, but her sister, Isabella, is not frightened of him. Her reckless nature infuriates him. No man in his right mind would marry her!
The Georgette Heyer fan in me was very happy to read this compelling and sweet romance. Two strong, fleshed out, and likeable characters. A lovely plot and a vivid historical background. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
There was a good plot line and sub plots that made the story fast paced and interesting. It felt like some parts of the original story had been edited out and some of the context was missing in places. Dobson appears out of no where on a final scene at the Inn (he was not mentioned in the lead up to the events at the Inn and was meant to be on a fruit farm. It is unclear why Isabella was soaked through after the events of at the Inn, it was explained much later that was raining. There were a few other contexts missing.
Most of this book is a great read, but it suffers from an insufficient proofreading toward the end. The characters are mixed up, the actions are unclear, and a soaking rainfall suddenly appears. The epilogue is trite but tidied up loose ends. I expect a better effort from this writer.
