Blood Reign

Every hundred years, King Erik Vladislav Dracul, king of the vampires, chooses a bride from Distova, and carries her away over the mountains never to be seen or heard from again. Every royal is taught to honor and fear the choosing ceremony, and every princess since the beginning has been hidden from the vampire's watchful eye. Until now.

When Princess Mina finds herself falling out of a tree, and into the arms of a mysterious vampire her life is changed irrevocably. Plagued by nightmares, and the contradictions of her past she is whisked into a world full of impossible things and forced to ask herself impossible questions.

Like what happens when you fall in love with a monster, and what happens when the monster might not be monstrous at all?

I love vampire romances and I'll try pretty much any that I come across so I'm thrilled that I not only found BLOOD REIGN but that I enjoyed it so much! This Dracula retelling featured a swoony vampire King, a stabby human Princess, some light kidnapping, magic, intrigue, and lots of steam. BLOOD REIGN grabbed my attention from the very first chapter and I was completely invested in Mina and Erick's developing romance and curious to see how things would work out as more of Erick's past was revealed. These two set off sparks from their very first meeting and the chemistry jumped off the page. My only complaint is that Mina's feelings toward vampires in general changed really quick and I was expecting a little more resistance considering she's had over 20 years of believing vampires were monsters.

As much as I loved Mina and Erick as a couple, I also enjoyed them as individual characters. I especially adored Mina who was brave, compassionate, and strategic. She might be a Princess but she's no damsel in need of a rescue. I love a tough heroine and Mina could hold her own against anything that came her way. And the best part is that she stayed that way even after meeting Erick; from beginning to end Mina knew how to kick butt and take care of herself. She had the type of strong personality that could lead countries, make hard decisions, and keep her King in line. Erick was equally enjoyable and I loved his blend of fearsome vampire and gentle partner. He kidnapped Mina because he didn't have a choice but he didn't want a docile and unwilling wife and his respect for Mina's strength only grew as the book went on.

Outside the romance, the world building was really interesting and I loved all the Dracula references and character names. The side characters, especially the witch Lucy and werewolf Harker, were well written and made me want to learn all about their stories as well. There was also some fun political intrigue and mystery surrounding Erick's late wife and a mysterious blood plague that was affecting some of the villages; the last 25% in particular really ramped up on the action and intrigue.

I read a lot of vampire romances but everything felt very fresh in BLOOD REIGN and it kept me guessing through all the twists and turns. There's a very solid ending, especially for Erick and Mina's relationship, but based on the "To be continued" at the end of the book we'll be getting more in this world and I can't wait to read it!

Favorite Quotes:

His hands cupped her breasts, and she smiled, turning to kiss him again. "You fuck like a god."

He laughed, nipping at her lips. "Starlight, only monsters can fuck this good."

Terrific read! The plot moves quickly, and there's a great mix of magic, steam, and worldbuilding. Erik has major secrets and Mina (initially) has major prejudices, but their character and relationship growth is fun to read. Looking forward to more in this series :)

PS, I totally didn't see the plot twist coming (hint: .

Insta love. Completely unearned.
And "she bit her lower lip" so many times I started to keep count until I just decided to not finish the book.

Dark, romantic, and utterly irresistible this story weaves classic vampire myth with a fresh, emotionally charged twist. The premise alone is deliciously ominous: a king of vampires, a centuries old choosing, and princesses raised to fear a fate worse than death. But what truly elevates this tale is Princess Mina herself curious, brave, and achingly human as she tumbles (quite literally) into a destiny she was never meant to face.
The chemistry between Mina and King Erik Vladislav Dracul crackles from the very first encounter, blurring the line between terror and longing. Nightmares bleed into waking life, secrets unravel, and the story asks questions that linger long after the final page: Can love exist without monstrosity? And who decides what a monster really is?
Atmospheric, haunting, and deeply romantic, this is a gothic fantasy that grips your heart and refuses to let go. Perfect for readers who love forbidden love, morally complex monsters, and heroines who dare to question everything they’ve been taught. A mesmerizing read from start to finish.

For starters, this is insta-love, not insta-lust. One minute he meets her, and the next they’re already masturbating. Okay…

The writing feels way too modern for a fantasy novel. And honestly, he has zero charisma for a vampire. I was expecting something closer to Luke Evans’ Dracula in Dracula Untold.

One second she’s completely against vampires, and the next she’s already lusting after one. The whole encounter happened way too fast. It would have worked much better if their meeting had been pushed to the second chapter and given more buildup.

The story was excellent! I love the story of Erik and Mina, and the call backs to other classic Dracula characters. There were some minor grammatical errors and incorrect words but overall the book was fantastic. Just the right amount of spice too. I can't wait to see what happens in book 2.

AS A NOTE FOR READERS - Some reviews might mention that the book was part of a duology at one point. However, this is not the case. Blood Regin is a STANDALONE NOVEL.

My original plan was for two books, but things have changed. Blood Reign is a complete story, but the door is still open for me to revisit the characters in the future.
