Shelby Nichols isn’t your average soccer-mom turned private investigator. She’s more on the quirky side with a little wild thrown in. That’s because a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head left her with the ability to read minds. This lands her in all kinds of trouble, and this time is no exception. Helping a reporter, Billie Jo, get the low-down on a case is just the tip of the iceberg. When her best friend’s niece goes missing, Shelby is pulled into a conspiracy that involves the police and the leader of a violent drug ring. Add to that a stranger in town with ties to the mob-boss she works for, along with a known assassin out to kill him, and Shelby is crossing danger at every turn. Will she find the answers in time? Or will this be her last adventure?
Solving crimes with sass, suspense, and a splash of the supernatural. Colleen Helme is a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, best known for her fast-paced, laugh-out-loud Shelby Nichols Adventure Series, where cozy mystery meets a dash of the paranormal. With over 19 books in the series and several more in her Sand and Shadow and the Love, Loyalty and Larceny series, she’s built a world in which readers love to escape.
Shelby Nichols is definitely and undeniably my book heroine of the month. This woman can kick ass despite the mishaps and misfortunes she runs into. And that includes being almost shot by a bullet in the head, thus giving her the uncanny ability to read minds. That itself is an added bonus and a real problem solver because it helped her gets things done, resolve issues faster and gets to the bottom of the issue faster than the speeding bullet (or not).
When her friend’s niece has gone missing, she’s got another case in her hands that involves her Uncle Joey. Talk about multi-tasking career mom. The investigations delve deeper and deeper, bringing her closer to danger in more ways than one.
It is my regret that I haven’t read the previous books that Miss Helme had written. It would help me better understand Shelby’s attraction to Ramos, her uncle Joey’s bodyguard, despite being happily married. It is my hope that this part of Shelby’s love life won’t go downhill. I really love this woman and all the other characters that spice up the investigation. I love how Colleen had written a book that has all the elements of a gripping suspense mystery: evolving plot, evocative setting, and engaging characters. My suggestion to my own self: Pick up all the previous books in this series and bask in the talent that is Colleen Helme.
For those of fans who love the world of Shelby Nichols, we can always expect to read two storylines or more intermingled with the main plot. Well, "Crossing Danger" very cleverly intermixed several storylines and then neatly consolidates them all into one. By far, this plot was the most complicated of all of the books and Ms. Helme was masterful in her ability to get Shelby in and out of trouble.
In this edition, Shelby and her new friend, reporter Billie Jo are at a studio taking an Aikido class. While Shelby is certainly nervous, she quickly begins to make strides and the instructor give her a few pointers on the first night that might help get her out of a sticky situation. We all know that Shelby is forever in a sticky situation so it is wise for her to request this assistance.
Shelby receives a frantic call from her girlfriend, Holly. It seems that Chloe, her niece has gone missing and she would for Shelby to help out. Of course, without hesitation, Shelby goes to the police department to help out. It is soon discovered that Shelby was at the scene of a major crime that left three people dead including her seventeen year old boyfriend. Shelby is shocked when she arrives home only to find Chloe at her house. When she questions Chloe she realizes the reason she didn't want to go home or to the police. It seems that a cop was the shooter. Things just became complicated.
To make matters worse, Billie Jo is beaten and shot in her own home and Detective Harris, aka Dimples is frantic with grief. He refuses to leave her side after surgery. Yet, it soon becomes clear that the assailants were after the second copy of the thumbdrive that went missing from her office. Shelby is angry and determined to find out who would do this to her friend. Before she has a chance to pursue this, Uncle Joey requests her presence at a breakfast meeting with his former college roommate and nemesis, Blake. It seems that Blake works for the government and has a great curiosity about Shelby.
As Shelby races from place to place investigating the various cases she stumbles upon a dead file case of her high school crush. She goes back down to the creepy police department basement with Dimples and is bound and determined to help him out with the case. Oh I should also mention that Detective Bates is being the biggest pain in the butt and is trying to compromise Shelby's reputation. Although he rattles her self confidence for a time, she quickly puts him in his place.
There is so much going on in this little gem of a book and series. Shelby's quirky ways and lovable demeanor always seems to keep her in trouble and has her husband, Chris, Ramos, Uncle Joey, Dimples and even her kids worrying about what crazy situation she will need rescuing from or even if she will survive the mayhem that always seems to follow in her wake. I just love this series! My biggest challenge is that I've spent the last few days speeding through one Shelby Nichols Adventures after another and now there are no more to read until the next book comes out which will probably be next year. Oh well, I now have another series that I'm addicted to and will have to wait what seems like forever to get my fix!
I am a big fan of Shelby. Having read her previous adventures, she is a character that feels close to my heart and a friend. Crossing Danger is yet another high voltage, thrilling adventure with Shelby where she goes cracking a mystery, facing danger and reading minds!
As was the case with the previous covers of this series, this one again is an appealing and eye catching one. The blurb is interesting and instantly peeks our interest in the story.
The audible version of the book has the voice of Wendy Tremont King as the narrator. She is a great narrator and able to engage the listener. She has a soothing and expressive voice which made my listening journey enjoyable. Her voice symbolizes Shelby to me.
I was able to visualize all the scenarios and felt like I was physically present with Shelby as she tackled dangerous situations and followed clues.
Colleen's writing style is simple and she is expressive; able to bring out the emotions of the characters out beautifully. Here too, she was able to make me relate myself to all the characters and become invested in their stories. I enjoyed meeting Shelby again and sincerely followed her along. The best thing about this series is that each book is better than the previous one. The stories with their mystery, emotional and adventurous quota keep getting better and better.
In this book, Shelby is trying to find the missing niece of her friend and has to work with a cop who she knows doesn't like her but being Shelby, she is able to slowly make way for herself. It was fun watching the comfort that Shelby has achieved with her powers and the misadventures that always follow her.
All in all, I enjoyed listening to Crossing Danger immensely and give it 5 super shiny stars. Go grab this book and read it or listen to it. Strongly recommended to everyone. I love Colleen's style and look forward to reading more from her in the future.
I received the audible copy of the book from the author and I am very thankful to her. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.
Eagerly awaited and read in a few hours: the next installment of Shelby Nichols! And it was as always great, although it somehow also felt as an in-between. Shelby is juggling several cases for the police, Uncle Joey and her best friend Holly and somehow it all comes together in a big climax. Shelby is questioning whether she shoukd continue helping the police as she is being obstructed by a surly police officer. Uncle Joey is interested in the motives of an old acquaintance and asks Shelby for assistance. The disappearance of Holly's teenage niece also keeps Shelby busy.
I loved this book and can see that Shelby will be going places as mysterious Blake is in the picture and might involve Shelby is intelligence. Exciting!
In the meantime Shelby is still happily married with kids. And there lies my 'problem' with the series. It is getting more obvious that Shelby is attracted to Ramos and he reciprocates. I totally adore Ramos and love the UST between them. Actually I 'ship' this like crazy. I live for the Shelby/Ramos moments. My favorite book is the one where they are in Orlando together. BUT.... What about Chris, her totally lovable hubby?? She has kids with him!
How is Colleen ever going to resolve this? I find myself secretly hoping something happens to Chris but then I slap myself. But it is also starting to get weird. Shelby is starting to fall for Ramos, people notice (Joey, his wife) and I love the motorcycle jacket thing. Owwwwwww. Well I guess poor Chris has got to go and then a time jump for Shelby to get over him... HINT HINT....
Great!!! LOVE it If you are looking at this book you have probably read the earlier books; it is not essential, but the relationships develop through the series so there is an advantage to reading all of them. I would strongly suggest that you read Carrots at least before reading any of the others. Colleen Helme has created characters that move into your heart so the people matter as much as the plot. But the plots are great and are an important part of the story.
In Crossing Danger, Shelby is drawn into a case of a friend's missing niece, before that case is resolved, another friend is shot leaving Shelby to take over that case, while talking to Dimples in the archives she discovers that her first boyfriend was murdered about a year ago and the file is about to go into the cold case files and if that isn't enough to handle, they learn that an assassin is after Uncle Joey. So much to do and having so little to work with drags her down, but family and friends stand by to keep her going. Oh yes, the newest "gift" is working, but it is still limited; message from the "beyond" are a lot harder to read than minds.
Shelby is an idiot. I keep reading these books hoping that I'll see some growth in her character. Unfortunately, I've been disappointed. I'm not sure what satisfaction the author gets out of making her main character a complete idiot who lacks the common sense of a 10 year old, but it's completely disheartening. Add that to Shelby's lack of understanding for the feelings of her husband, the complete disregard for the safety of her family and her growing romance with an assassin, and these books are completely ridiculous. Reading these books is almost as bad as reading a trashy romance novel. I'm embarrassed for people to know that I've read it.
Murder, political corruption, drugs and the very psychic Shelby Nichols mix together in a delicious blend. Somehow Shelby is investigating 4 different cases and then they start to intertwine. I don't know how Colleen Helme manages to do this every time, but it is absolutely brilliant. The mind reading is such a great idea and poor Shelby's attempts to cover her abilities are pretty funny sometimes. All I can say is I LOVE THIS SERIES!
Working a case with Billie has far reaching impact on multiple problems going on. Dimples figures out her Secret and the cold case room gives her a clue to solve a cold case of an old flame. Always a pleasure to read can't wait till next book.
The victims in this book is close to home for Shelby. Shelby has the worse luck when she's solving mysteries. She gets into dangerous situations too often. Chris is turning out to be so understanding along with his loving feelings for Shelby. I'm getting a little worried about Ramos and Shelby with what happens in this book. A new diabolical character, old friend of Uncle Joey, joins the mix of people using Shelby.
I virulent put this book down this series is having a major impact on my life and now Devil in the Black Suit well really like I wouldn’t get it more detail about our resident hottie hitman like hell I’m missing out on that just need to sit in a cold bath or I may melt woo hoo can’t wait
It just keeps getting better and better! As I read each book in this series it becomes my new favorite. I absolutely love the character evolution - Shelby is really growing and yet in the most essential ways she hasn't changed. I loved Crossing Danger and I'm so excited for the next one to come out.
The characters make this series - I love everything about Shelby. I love that she's a great mom and wife, and yet she's still discovering this new exciting part of herself. Her ability to read minds has changed her life and she's embracing it - she's getting better at investigating and dealing with the bad guys; she's discovering new abilities; she's even learning some self-defense. Oh, and she's continuing to be an expert at landing herself right in the middle of trouble!
This time a family friend needs Shelby's help when a daughter goes missing - and, of course, Shelby is happy to help. Even when she gets stuck working with Bates, the one cop that has made no secret that he dislikes her. Of course, there's still plenty going on with Uncle Joey and Ramos and there's more overlap than usual there which was cool. As usual, the mystery is well put together and not too easy to solve, even with Shelby's abilities. And, as usual, Shelby scares everyone by putting herself in danger (including me)!
I don't know what else to say without spilling specific details and that's the fun of reading it! Great mystery, fun charaters, humor, character development - what more do you want from a book, right? Oh how about a good narrator? Wendy Tremont King does a great job and I'd be bummed if she stopped narrating this series. Even though I've made fun of some of the accents, she's Shelby for me 100% and I think her male voices are good as well. And I just love the voice she does for Billie Jo (southern) :)
I'm so ready for the next book - and the way Crossing Danger ends, the next book is sure to be exciting! I bet we end up in Paris :) **I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**
Love Shelby's adventures. I devour these books, and have all my friends and neighbors addicted too. This was a bit different since Shelby's challenge this time is rescuing the niece of her friend Holly, while she is also trying to keep her pal Billie Jo alive. Since the case with Billie Jo also seems to involve Uncle Joey, she has her hands full.
I really like these books because Shelby also values her family and her husband, even when she's attracted to Uncle Joey's bodyguard Ramos. Colleen Helme gives her heroine depth with the challenges and inner conflicts that she makes Shelby face.
Really recommend this series to anyone who likes mysteries with an off beat character as a heroine.
I received this book as an arc for a honest review. I love the Shelby Nichols adventures, she found she could read minds after being shot in supermarket robbery. She is really seems to be an inept detective who just seems to be lucky and fall into solving the mystery with Detective Dimples and her friends. I love the sparks between her and Uncle Joey's bodyguard Ramos but then I feel guilty because she has a great husband and kids. She totally balances her work life and private life. I love that you have to read the book and don't guess who done it until the end, that is the makings of great mystery writing and with the Blaine character spy because this looks like the series will keep be going strong. This is a great read and part of a great series.
another amazing addition to Colleen Helme's Shelby Nichols Adventure! loved it and its a totally fast-paced, page turner kind of book, each page just brings out some exciting thing that's happening to Shelby that you just cant wait to find out. Cant wait for the next instalment to the series. 5 Massive Stars for this book (maybe more).
I love this series! I like how Shelby seems so normal, and makes mistakes, both hilarious and serious, despite her abnormal gift. It has been fun to see her transform from an everyday housewife to an intrepid slueth and crime fighter. I have devoured all the novels in this series, and can't wait for the next one!
Loved this latest instalment of Sheby's adventures. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it all in one sitting. Now I can't wait for the next book. I guess I'll just have to start with Carrots and read the rest again. Thank you Colleen, keep them coming.
Had all the makings of a good Shelby Nichols adventure. Enjoyed how this book had a personal angle to it and brought in a lead to new adventures. Once again Colleen did a wonderful job with a character you can see as a personal friend.
A wonderful addition to the Shelby Nichol's saga. This is one of my favourite series, it always keep you on your toes with lots of intrigue, but nothing really sinister.
There were three storylines going on this time. Shelby's best friend's niece was missing, initially assumed to have been kidnapped, so Shelby was helping both her friend and the police with the case. Mob boss Joe Manetto had something going on with an old acquaintance, which Shelby was involved with, and her friend and reporter Billie Jo's investigation of the Attorney Generals office took a turn for the worse for poor Billie Jo, so Shelby also got involved with that investigation. It may sound confusing with multiple storylines but it's never confusing and it's very easy to keep track of everything going on, and certainly never boring!
These books are just so addictive. There's a bit of everything going on in them, intrigue, drama and danger, but also with so much fun with slightly ditzy Shelby and her mind-reading abilities. She did put her foot in it a few times in this book, but that's nothing new really! I love that Shelby is not only able to read minds, but has recently started getting other premonitions, like the waft of a certain smell to remind her of someone, or lead her in a certain direction, which is still freaking her out a bit.
In this book we also have an FBI guy involved, a 'old friend' of Manetto's, so Shelby may also get led in this direction in another book, and of course there's still the dead files room in the police station which hopefully has lots and lots more book potential, I can't wait! I absolutely love this series and don't want to read each book too quickly so I have none left. Long may Colleen Helme continue writing about the ditzy, lovable Shelby Nichols and all the really great side characters too.
Ai, Shelby. Just when you think she's faced death and out of harms way, another case takes a terrible turn!
Working her own case of her friend Niece gone missing, a cold case for Detective Harris (aka Dimples), helping Billie after a burglary gone wrong, and Uncle Joey with a past "friend" that's in town. Shelby finds her way into trouble in all cases!
Shelby wants to help everyone in such a great way. She knows she can get information, even in the most dangerous moments, from people on how things happened or why. She's great at getting people to think about what she wants to learn and piecing everything together.
I will say, I was worried about Shelby a number of times in this book. Not only for her own safety, but that she's walking a line with the questions and how she talks after getting the answers from their thoughts. I'm worried more people are going to pick up on what and how she's doing it.
I love Shelby's personality and how she unwinds to help her nerves. And she's really come to love Ramos's motorcycle. lol. This is too funny. Wait until you see her get caught ogling over the motorcycle. lol.
Shelby has made some strong bonds with the police, Uncle Joey, and others that I'm looking forward to all the cases she works on in the future.
Wow I really enjoyed this book, nope make that the whole series. I just love the characters and the plot never quite ends up in the direction you think the story is going and with all the twists and turns the story takes you just have to hold on and enjoy the ride. Another must read or listen to story by a very talented author. Shelby is called in on a private case when her best friends niece goes missing. At the same time she is working on a cold case for the police, trying to solve a ten year old murder. Uncle Joey (a mob Boss) wants her help to find out why an old friend/enemy is getting back in touch and to top it all Billy is shot in a home invasion. Can Shelby juggle all the balls in the air and put her mind reading skill to good use before things get even more dangerous? Hopefully as the bodies start to pile up and a hit man is in town. The narrator was very good and I can't imagine a better reader for this bunch of fun characters.
In this book Shelby can't say that the majority of trouble that arise stems from Uncle Joey.
It is only a matter of time that the children would have gotten involved. Now Dimples (Dect. Harris) knows. *sigh* I am not sure how many people will know before we get to the of the book in the series.
Currently Chris knows because he is her husband. Uncle Joey knows because of Kate. Kate knows because Shelby was buying time not being killed. Ramos kind of figured it out but she confirmed it. Now Dect. Harris aka Dimples. How much more longer will it be before her children find out and how will the react.
well she almost got through the whole book without being maimed. Those martial skils come in handy and I am glad she and Savannah are learning.
The Shelby series bring me so much joy. Shelby and Ramos... Huuunnnnny!!!!!! Its Hot in here just thinking about these two.
GREAT Series Colleen Helme is on the 15th book and I personally cant wait to see what's next.
My 12 year old niece just tapped into my library and she is in love with these book. She is listening to the audible, as well as reading the eBooks when she cant listen.
Shelby is juggling several cases for the police, Uncle Joey and her best friend Holly and somehow it all comes together in the end. She is questioning whether she should continue helping the police as she is being shunned by a surly officer. Uncle Joey is interested in the motives of an old acquaintance and the disappearance of Holly's teenage niece are ALL keeping Shelby busy in this next go around.
I don't know how she does it but as this series continues they just get better! There's always several cases to keep up with & following them leaves my mind stretched to the limit! I love the characters & the way Shelby ' s relationships keep growing. There's excitement, warmth, compassion, romance & nail biting tension that makes me keep looking forward to the next Shelby Nichols case.
Shelby has too many fires going but as usual she sorts them out. Dimples makes a discovery that changes their relationship. Blake is something government and seems to have resources that match or exceed Joe's. Great story development. Characters are created to a detail needed for their role if they aren't prime characters and then they are like acquaintances of the reader. Good read.
Life is fast paced for Shelby Nichols. Sometimes too fast to even keep up with all the things she needs to do. She has the typical mom, wife things to do. Plus she runs her business where she works for the police, a crime boss, a newspaper reporter and now her best friends niece is missing. A young girl has not only disappeared but seen a boy murdered by people involved in drugs. Now she is in danger from a dirty cop. Shelby and Dimples have to solve this fast to keep this girl alive.
Yes, I'm hooked on these Shelby Nichols novels. Most woman are curious and we love to gather information about people, just imagine being able to read minds. Kind of mind blowing but then again makes for enjoyable reading. The author has done a great job of developing all the characters so you can ride along on Shelby's adventures. Highly recommend the series if you are looking for some good entertainment.
