Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
This was a solid follow-up volume. We get to see Kurama and Hiei in action at full strength.
After both are able to unleash their new abilities we see how ruthless these guys are. It's nice to see them on Yusuke's team because goddamn do they do work. Hiei has an especially "Fuck you" moment that is quite EXPLOSIVE. Then we get Kawabara's dumbass trying his new move and failing in such a wonderful way. But at the end, he says NO MORE, and he gets his groove on.
This isn't as good as the last volume or the next (Seen the anime) BUT it is still a damn fine time. It's amazing how quick these matches are compared to the anime. I believe still entertaining but the matches in the anime felt a lot more "Epic" in a sense of build-up. So little let down there.
This boy Togashi drawing actual clits in Youko's plant monsters....
Anyway, the finals for the Ankoku Bujutsukai begin! As is to be expected, the fights here are largely to show the fruits of Team Urameshi's last-minute training. Just as we saw Rinku, Chuu, Jin, and Touya help the lads last volume, we now have Suzuki pitch in to give Kurama and Kuwabara some new items to help them out: the source of Uraurashima's box to help Kurama regain his Youko power, and a new sword hilt to help focus Kuwabara's reiki. Kurama's match against Karasu includes Kurama losing his Youko form, but still pulling through in the end, kind of. Next up is Hiei versus Bui, where we see Hiei's mastery of the Kokuryuuha (in a form that seems to be influence for Hitsugaya's initial Bankai in Bleach...). The volume ends with Kuwabara starting a battle against Toguro-Ani, but before we see much of his new abilities, only that he can tank Toguro's finger-spears with the power of righteous, hot-blooded anger.
I'm unsure if I've thought of it much before, but Toguro-Ani is pretty fuckin' cool. I think I might like him more as an antagonist than a number of other dudes in this series.
One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!
Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.
Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.
The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.
Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.
While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.
Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.
Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

Good way to keep the adrenaline pumping. Liking how well Hiei's abilities are being fleshed out. Would like it if his fights were a bit less one-sided though, although it does provide some nice contrast.
Each character has their own fight script, it's a tad repetitive so some change would be nice. This volume was high on the epic factor though, which I enjoyed a lot. Still left with many question marks on Kurama and what he can actually do. Karasu was also a bit underwhelming in the end. Bui didn't get enough time to shine. Kuwabara did the same thing he always does.
The emotional beats were hit pretty well here though, is what I can say. Would still only give this a decent rating
Things continue to escalate in this volume as we learn more about different character's motivations. We also get to see Kurama and Hiei once again having intense fights. if you aren't into classic shonen-fighting I can see how you might feel like this arc of the series drags, but overall I think the artwork is so stellar that I could read about team Urameshi fighting forever. Things are starting to come to a close, but the circumstances are more dire than ever.
The only problem I have with the character development in this book is power imbalance. It doesn't necessarily make sense for Kuwabara and Hiei to develop or master new powers in two days...but it does make sense for Kurama and Yusuke to get power-ups because it's explained in the book.
Other than that, it's cool to finally see Team Toguro in action.
the most iconic storyline ends in this chunk and aughhhhh so good. i wanna rewatch that part of the anime specifically lmao ider if the anime extends past that.
luckily, the demon tunnel arc is also soooo good imho bc it really leans into the supernatural backstory and ~morality of some of this universes laws. also it helped that the transition issue was fun and cool.
What a stressful volume!! Yusuke is able to process his feelings of losing his beloved master, with the help of Koenma of all people. The finals finally start, with Kurama and Hiei displaying some awesome fighting prowess, and Kuzuma finding out at the worst time that Genkai died fighting Toguro in the worst way possible from the older brother, while fighting him. Again, a stressful volume!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Yusuke's friends have all gotten last-minute power-ups and ass-pulls, and they're ready to fight! A good volume, cool-looking powers, a bit of a let-down though compared to how fun the rest of this arc has been. It's a lot more serious now, no time for joking around, but everything goes by a bit too quickly. Walk up, activate new power, throw it at the enemy.
Final turnamen kegeapan berlangsung seru.
More on that girl from summer camp: she did convince me that Hiei is also kickass. The concept of devouring a dragon to consume its powers is a fascinating one, I will admit.
Love the covers of these volumes, not to mention the contents💕 loving the dark tournament arc, will be kinda sad when it's over, but still excited to see what's to come.
