This was good except for when Kuwabara ditches the usual crew to go to a Megallica concert with his other friends. At this moment in the story, there are hordes of demons actively trying to open a portal to hell and destroy all humanity. Kuwabara seems to be one of the few beings on earth capable of fixing this demon invasion problem, and he instead chooses to go see a band that honestly doesn't even sound like they would be that good. 4 stars for my enjoyment of the story and 0 stars for the content of Kuwabara's character.

I'm really digging the direction this series is headed. It's turning into all out gang warfare, with enemies who will always play dirty. Seeing the team adapt to this new kind of challenge is also interesting.

The way this volume handles power creep is also worth praising. Yusuke should not be struggling to outfight his first new foes immediately after beating Toguro head-on. So instead the challenge comes from dealing with their underhanded tactics. This is very well done, because it makes the villains more hate-able, it offers a new kind of challenge for the protagonists, and it doesn't undermine the previous story progression. Very well done.

This brings in Sensui and man does this get dark. Learn the history of why Sensui and his crew wants the demons to take over the world despite them being humans themselves. The fights pretty brutal and characters keep facing near death experiences. This arc feels bigger than dark tournament but not as quickly paced.

Reread for the fun of it. It is my number one favorite manga series.
~~~~
This is the fourteenth volume of the series and for me it keeps getting better. I love the plotline and the art is great. I already know how the whole story goes (since I own the whole series on DVD and I recommend watching it as well as reading the manga).
This volume starts out with Itsuki beginning to open the hole to demon-world; then gang meets Murota (a psychic from Swarm City). He is attacked by Hagiri (member of Sensui's Seven), which lands them in the hospital. While discussing the attack, the Doctor (another of Sensui's seven) launches his own attack in the hospital. Yusuke of course defeats him. The next day, Kuwabara and his three friends go off to see a concert. They are attacked by Seaman, and this is where Kuwabara learns of his new ability. Kuwabara does not exact revenge against Seaman (aka Mitarai) and instead saves his life.
Upon awakening, Kurama and Yusuke question Mitarai and question him about Sensui and his plans. There the Chapter Black tape (which details all of humanity's darkest and attrocious crimes) is discovered to be behind the "brainwashing" of these seven.
Koenma arrives and tells the group that Sensui was the former underworld detective before Yusuke. In it he tells how the Chapter Black tape disappeared along with Sensui ten years ago. and by the end of the volume, Yusuke and Sensui finally meet.
Another chapter in the spirit detectives case files. Yusuke is something else when he learns some hard truths and facts from the prince of spirit world. In this case the former spirit detective sensui . New battles. new enemies and some old. A must read.
One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!
Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.
Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.
The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.
---
Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.
Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.
While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.
Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.
Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.
I happened to see the page of Sensui's super-detailed face somewhat recently, outside the context of reading the manga, and I was more focused on how strange the shading was on the little spurt of blood that comes out of the mind-reader's forehead. Actually re-reading this volume, and seeing the same page again in the proper context, I was once more astounded at Togashi-sensei's genius (as keeps happening in re-reading YYH and HxH...), and indeed got a slight chill from that face. The Chapter Black Arc is picking up! Somewhat unfortunately, I recall having previously thought a few things were silly - namely, , , and , so I'm not really looking forward to the climax of this arc....
It's interesting that Seaman's ability has a design not unlike a Stand from JoJo. In fact, the second water-construct bears a minor resemblance to Echoes from Diamond Is Unbreakable, which would have been running in Jump at the same time as this arc. And Doctor's viruses kind of resemble Harvest....
It's interesting as well to see Togashi make a "darker" turn in his shounen battle manga, while still having a sense of idealism or innocence in ignorance of the world. That is, we are introduced to the Chapter Black videotape, featuring recordings of human-made atrocities so disturbing they've corrupted Sensui into villainy. But I highly doubt Togashi in the early '90s would have been aware of even one percent of the gross shit Mexican cartels film themselves doing. Seaman cries about people singing while murdering people, but because he was born well before the dawn of the smartphone he's certainly been spared witness to the infamous "Funkytown" video...!
Honestly I think this is the best arc yet!!! Lots of my previous criticism are completely resolved. Action-packed, but not so fast paced that battles feel like they're over before they start. The story has many more twists and turns. Villains with clear motivations. A real sense of threat and danger. Interesting abilities that really feel like they're fleshing out the power system. Interesting new characters. A lot of character decisions that make sense (specifically looking at Hiei). Foreshadowing and some clearly intentional plot (looking at Kuwabara for this one) and generally just a more dynamic story. There's even some moral questions for the reader. This has been excellent.
I must also say that for the first time since the initial Underworld Detective Arc, I can really see how this manga influenced Bleach, plot and world building wise. This arc has some remarkable similarities to the Lost Substitute Shinigami Arc of Bleach, but to be honest I think this manga does it much better.
This manga is going up in my rankings!!!
I loved the fight in the hospital and it was sad learning about Sensui's past, but I feel like I'm slowly losing steam with this series. Not that it's bad, but I'm getting to the point where I'm forcing myself to read it rather than looking forward to reading it. It's probably my fault for wanting to binge the whole series in three days, but I'm not that invested in the story at this point.
Also, and I won't talk about this in greater detail until I finish the series, but it's becoming clearer to me that the anime was better than the manga. Controversial opinion, I'm sure, but there are certain scenes where I think to myself, "I liked this so much better in the anime," and it's hard to ignore those thoughts when they keep cropping up.
I'll still finish the series as I only have five volumes left, but my interest is waning as I go.
As mentioned in my review of a previous volume, I only ever watched through the Dark Tournament as a kid, so this arc is new to me. I have heard it's pretty divisive, though, or that it gets squirrely.
So far, I like this new direction. The tournament was really fast-paced, but it moved away from the charm of the earlier volumes with Yusuke and company taking on cases. It also didn't really feel high-stakes in the sense that there was some overarching plot. Toguro was strong, yes, but this is some world-ending stuff now.
This volume is always a delight to come back to. We learn more about this new threat that the Urameshi team has to face, but their efforts are divided as Kuwabara chooses to have some fun instead. The bit with the evil doctor is fun too, and we get a lot of interesting philosophy 101, which is always a blast in these kinds of stories as characters are questioned by issues of morality and justice.
Sensui! About time we had a proper, human villain, instead of just demons. And look, Togashi is really going all-in on "nen" abilities with weird effects. Honestly I think the art in this volume is sort of lacking? I think Togashi is spreading himself a bit too thin, here. It's great when it matters but the smaller moments in-between feel pencil-thin bare bones.
But Sensui really is a fascinating villain, a fallen hero!
En este tomo conocemos al que me parece el villano más malo de la serie. La verdad no recordaba nada de este arco, pero me parece muy original todos los tipos de poderes espirituales que tienen los enemigos, y qué planes tienen en realidad.
Hay una pelea que se sitúa en un hospital que me pareció espectacular, de mis favoritas de toda la serie.
この冊の構想は筋の通らない、とっくにシーマンの場合。
彼は人間を悪行為のビデオを見て、人間の価値が減って、人間を全滅する判断した。何で?人間の暴力が気に入らないから。。。暴力で人間を消す?嫌いものをやる?それでどこが救世?人間の悪が気になれば、その悪を減らすべきでしょう?自分をやって悪を増やすは反対でしょう?
それにしても、何でビックリしんたんだ?シーマンも仙水も。人は悪い。人は悪いことをいつもやっている。世界が始まったから今まで悪いことをやっている。知らなかったの?なんで?自分の目で回りを見っていなかったの?人間は根本的に悪い、生まれたから悪い行動をやるんだ。だから救世主が必要、私たちは自分の能力で自分の頑張りで自分を救うわない。私たちの「救う」はシーマンのように悪に崩れる。神様に頼る以外がない。
Well, now we’re really back to focusing on Yusuke’s real job: being an Underworld Dectective, and what a case he now has! I have a feeling this is the final arc, and not just because this is volume 14 out of 19.
An amazing and intriguing introduction to our new antagonist.
It's interesting to see confirmation to something that in retrospective was pretty obvious.
Ghost Detectives have existed before Yusuke and why they are no longer in such position is quite interesting.
This is a well executed battle manga, but the parts I like best are the parts where it breaks that formula, which I didn't really see in this volume.
Getting real good again! It's ramping up between the gang and sensui's gang! I love this arc and I'm excited to see how it all plays out. This arc is much scarier than past ones. Loving it!!!!
