Am I just going to give the rest of the series five stars? Probably!

Now that we're a little further away from mentioning wack shit like Sensui's multiple personality disorder, the fight between him and Yusuke has gotten a lot cooler. Yusuke is becoming more like Toguro, and Sensui is becoming more like Yusuke/Toguro, in passion for battle. The way the Yukina/Tarukane Arc leads into the first battle against the Toguro brothers, to set up the Ankoku Bujutsukai and expand Sakyo's role a bit, to set up the opening of the rift between the Ningenkai and Makai by Sensui and Itsuki, leading into the Three Kings Arc, is all "tighter" in my current opinion, versus how I initially viewed the manga as being a series of tenuously-linked stories, not unlike how Dragon Ball sometimes went.

I found this volume oddly "comfy" after Sensui's defeat and into the very beginnings of the Three Kings Arc, with Yusuke meeting the first Reikai Tantei, discussing Raizen and the impending war with Raizen's underlings, Kurama and Hiei being scouted to fight respectively for Yomi and Mukuro, and the "mundane" side of life with what Keiko and Kuwabara are up to. When I first read this manga, I was pretty peeved that this arc was setting up another big tournament that kind of just fizzled out, but now that I know what to expect I can enjoy it more for what it is, essentially an extended epilogue.

Talk about a battle like no other. Yuseke is a demon sleeper and he has awakened to his demon blood within him. He gives the rouge detective a taste of his new found abilities and takes him head on. Not to mention he is A s-class demon. A must read

Getting to the end.

This volume, though more packed with action then the rest, isn't as fulfilling as you would think. Why? Because of how the "bad guys" are portrayed.

As evil and twisted as some of them are, it was different with Sensui. Being so black and white, with no room for gray, made him snap. He saw the darkest of gray, and simply couldn't take it. So he immersed himself in the darkness and obsessed over how evil and vile humans can be. Let’s face it; we don't have the greats of histories. Just reading anything on our wars or what use to be "punishment", will give anyone chills and that feeling of disgust.

But like most of us, we see the gray, as well as the black and white.

When Sensui died, I was sad for him, for what he couldn't fix. Even though I don't condone what he did, no matter what the reason. There is still sadness at his passing.

To me, that is something powerful, to write such a story with so many variables and emotions so that by the end, you feel for the antagonist, and wish there something more that could have been done, is fascinating. Yusuke felt this, as he watched Sensui die. For someone who started out as a thug, while only thinking of himself, in that moment it showed how big his heart was, so many shades of gold.

As I've said countless of times, this is a story that has every kind of feeling, every kind of hope, that pulls you in, and gets you feeling for every character, no matter what side they fall on.

Happy Reading

from here on out, the series takes a slow downturn and fizzles out. there seems to be some promise with this new arc, but meh. this volume's a goodie, but probably somewhere more realistically in the 3.5 range (rounded up for good measure). what's up with that demon form? and it magically disappears. whatever.

One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!

Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.

Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.

The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

---

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.

Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.

While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.

Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

I feel like the conclusion of Yusuke vs Sensui really dropped the ball. Aside from being an unsatisfying ass-pull, it muddles the power of Yusuke's character development. Yusuke started out as a selfish delinquent, but by training hard, making connections with others and being more sincere about his feelings, he has found something to fight for and improved his life. Now here he is going toe to toe with his dark mirror, Sensui. They are both humans who got caught up in being underworld detectives. They have both seen the horrors demons and humanity are capable of. These two humans, at the peak of power mankind can achieve, fight at the border between the two worlds they have been drawn into. Both have seen the dark side of humanity and demonkind. Sensui does not believe humanity is worth saving, while Yusuke would give his life to protect it. This is the full culminations of Yusuke's arc, showing how far his emotional growth has come. This would have been an excellent place to end the series.

Adding in a scenery change, Yusuke's demonic heritage, and consciousness swapping to the mix just muddies the water. Yu Yu Hakusho is at its best when it is exploring the emotional and interpersonal dynamics of its characters, not when it's building up lore or explaining mechanics. And this moment should have been the culmination of our protagonist's growth. Instead it fails to stick the landing and kind of meanders around into a new arc in the second half of the book.

Maybe it can turn things around. The meeting with the first detective was interesting, but not much came of it. Yusuke losing his humanity and becoming obsessed with fighting could be an interesting angle depending on where they go with it. The scenes where he's saying goodbye to his friends for 3 years was incredibly heart-wrenching. Things seem like they're getting back on track, even if I still have some niggles to complain about.

The end of a relatively short arc. The Sensui fight was pretty cool, but overall...There was so much potential with Chapter Black, but just too much goofy shit introduced. I feel like Yusuke's abilities and humanity are what made him such a compelling character, and giving him demon ancestry just kind of cheapens it all. I guess you could argue that he maintains his humanity despite it, but it was kind of nice having a main character just be a powerful human.

I liked Hagiri (sniper) but I hated his epilogue because of what he and his sister find. Ugh. Glad he's gonna take care of the pieces of trash who did it, though.

The setup for this next arc sounds promising, but with only two volumes left, I'm assuming it's rushed and likely to introduce more characters/storylines with unreached potential.

I really do love Sensui, this literally "Holy" human, siding with the demons, while Yusuke, who is actually a "demon", wants to protect humanity. The differences between the two are great. This volume wraps that arc up pretty quickly, and I really enjoy that we spend the rest of it checking in with our characters and introducing the next arc. Seeing Kuwabara studying for exams is cool, rather than being strictly left behind as everyone else grows stronger you see him embrace the mortal life and start to get serious about his future. My highlight of this volume is Genkai's speech to Yusuke about how powerful he is- no one can stop him, not even her, so he can do whatever he wants. He can destroy the world, he can destroy his own life, whatever he does is entirely up to him and he has to get serious about what that choice is.

Pretty decent volume. The artwork lets it down massively. There are a lot of almost empty panels and panels which are very light on detail. Some panels during Yusuke's fight with Sensui were really hard to decipher.

What saves this volume though are particularly the emotional moments between Yusuke and Keiko, as well as Yusuke and Kuwabara as they say their goodbyes. I really do like the additions to the lore that are being made as well with the 3 elite tier demons. The slower pacing and more personal feel of the last feel chapters has been really nice. I do really like the grounded nature of this manga.

There's a lot to wrap up in a very short amount of time, so I'm not very enthusiastic about the last couple of volumes, expecting there to be quite a lot of unfinished plot lines.

I think I'm going to dub this arc the "info dump" arc because I feel like that's all that happened this volume and I'm sure it's gonna continue. Something that I will bring up is that the artwork has suffered significantly in this and the last few volumes. It's still readable and some of the panels look good, but sometimes the details in characters or scenery aren't there and the panel is nearly blank. I feel like this part was rushed, which makes sense because this arc as a whole seems rushed, but frankly it would have been best if the series ended after the Black Chapter arc.

Enough bitching, let's move on, only two volumes left.

While I loved all the build up to this fight. The ending is super lame.

It's what we would call a diabulus ex-machina.

Also, making Yusuke part demon takes away what makes him special as a fighter and as a person. Now he isn't strong due to his training and perseverance, he was just born stringer.

I couldn't for the life of me remember how this last arc of the story faired despite reading this several times as a kid. Now I remember why.

The author got so desperate to outdo his previous plot twists that he made desperate new developments that seem more appropriate to a prank show than a conclusion to a cult favorite manga.

I think this volume wrapped up this arc pretty nicely as Sensui comes to terms with a kind of justice he just couldn't have imagined before. The reveal about Yusuke is also fun, and I personally didn't predict that plot point. However, I won't spoil it for you.

A demon, huh. I’ve been a little disappointed in the lack of Keiko scenes, like she’s not a vital character, or the fact that even with this reunion, it feels so uneven.

This is the volume to end one arc and start the final arc. The Black Chapter arc is one of my favorites, and it ends just as good as it started.

Yusuke goes head to head with Sensui and the ending is pretty great. A surprise power boost (in the 90's if your hair grew really long you were becoming VERY strong) and leaves Yusuke a little different. A little bit more...demon. This leads to Yusuke trying to decide if he wants to head back into the demon world or stay on earth.

It's a lot of good character growth. Yusuke takes a big step forward in the relationship department. We get a really good fight scene at the start. I'll say the first spirit detective plotline is interesting though the monk plotline less so. But intrigued how it'll finish as I hear this last arc differs from the anime.

But overall, fun times. A 4 out of 5.

Yoshihiro Togashi, Yuyu Hakusho, vol. 17: Their Respective Decisions (ViZ, 1994)

Dire predictions abound as the team are separated. They think they're done with the demon plane once the portal is sealed, but it seems that's not the case; three demon princes have been holding a shaky truce for five hundred years, but a major event is about to shatter that truce. When half your team is composed of demon plane members, things are bound to get tough. This is mostly a setup issue, but left me salivating for 18. *** ½
