Renee Griffin is gorgeous, loveable, undeniably popular, and has an uncanny ability of getting everything she wants. She is a cunning seductress, a loving daughter, a prima donna socialite, and a cold-blooded murderer. This is not a story for the faint hearted. This is the story of a 21st Century psychopath.
"'You’ve killed,' he breathed. His eyes had grown big, so big that they barely fit his face anymore. He didn’t resemble Nathan at all. He was pathetic, and cowardly, and weak.
'I have.' Silence and darkness threatened to crush us both, the sound of his uneven breathing piercing through my eardrums. I didn’t bother hiding anything in my demeanour – it was a relief to let the darkness out, to let it slip out of every pore and every cell.
He was going to die.
His next words were quiet, so quiet, that it could have been drowned out with the faint sound of cheers coming from the stadium.
Personal Response: I found the book, Red Leather, by Lilley Gibson, very entertaining. I think it is very interesting to see a book that takes place from the antagonist’s perspective. The book also shows the way a villain thinks and shows how they develop as a character. It is fascinating to watch the fall of Renee’s character throughout the book. Another factor that kept me reading is watching Renee’s relationship with Eli develops throughout the book. I think Eli represents her dark side. She wants to let it all out but she has to be very careful. If she gets caught for everything she has down, there is no coming back from it. When she is with Eli, it doesn’t seem to be a problem for her. Another reason I think this may be the case is because when she is with her dad, she starts to show weakness and compassion. I think they are the voices on her shoulder supporting each side. To lose him would be to lose my grip on humanity. Renee thinks this while talking to her father in jail. She feels that losing her dad would be losing what human emotion she has in her. Plot Summary: This book is a sequel to White Lies. After causing a lot of harm to the people in the small town where she came from, Renee decides to move to Alistar. Renee is determined to start chaos and become the most popular girl in school in the process. Renee is the cousin of the infamous Jessabel Griffin. Jessabel has solved the biggest kidnapping case in history last year with her boyfriend, Nathan. Renee feels like a shadow because of her cousin. She starts talking to a group of girls and makes the decision to tear the group apart one by one. Renee is a cold blooded murderer who has killed anyone who found out her secret, but one person has managed to escape. Chloe Newman. Chloe Newman went to her old school and has followed Renee to Alistar. The book is based off of Renee doing anything she can to find Chloe. Renee’s original plan is to become best friends with Jessabel, but she finds out that she is growing jealous of Jessabel and everything she has. Renee starts creating chaos all over town. Renee releases the video of the Mayor’s closeted daughter, She drives an anerexic girl to death, she drives another girl to suicide, and she kills the most popular boy when he finds out her secret. She begins working with a boy named Eli trying to catch Chloe. Renee ends up falling for Nathan, Jessabel’s fiance. As a result of this, she tries to kill Jessabel and leaves the country with Nathan. She later finds out that Eli is working for Chloe and turns her in for everything. The book ends with Renee killing herself and her father after finding out that she is proven guilty. She feels as if her father is the only person she has ever loved and cannot live without him. Characterization:
A character who changes a lot throughout the book is Ted, Renee’s father. He used to be wrapped around his daughter’s finger. He refuses to think she is anything but an angel. He is a nervous wreck because of it. He wants to believe that his daughter is just like his late wife, Rhea. Towards the end of the book he becomes stronger. Not everything revolves around his controlling daughter.
The character who changes the most is Renee. She is smart and always very careful. She never has cared about anyone besides her father. She starts to act more compassionate towards other people. She starts to show weakness. It ends up driving insane.
Setting: The book takes place in Allistar. The state is unknown. It takes place in the present. This is important because want Renee wants most is chaos. It is easy to create chaos in a smaller town, because nothing scary every happens. It is a very beautiful community with two sides to it. There were the mansion’s on the top of the hill and there are the other, more normal houses, at the body of the hill. It is a regular small town. This affects the story because the book says a lot that their small unknown town will soon be infamous. Recommendation: I really like this book and highly recommend it. I recommend it for both guys and girls older than 13. It is a pretty violent story, so it is made for a mature audience. It also has some action, which would interest most guys. I give it an 8/10.

Renee is beautiful, popular, the queen bee. She is just used to getting whatever she wants and whoever she wants and when she doesn't get what she wants straight away, she goes to certain extents to obtain it. Even though Renee is a cruel person, I could understand why she did what she did (not that I agree with her actions) and she felt realistic. Which I love, because I really do hate Mary Sues. She's a very rare character to find on Wattpad because she is so imperfect but that's what made this story so good. I had this strange love/hate connection with Renee, where even though I knew she was a horrible person, I was still rooting for her until the very end.
Can I just say, how epic was that ending? And this part gave me the chills, it was just too good.
Reading Red Leather was a roller coaster ride- exhilarating, filled with twists and turns. If you haven't read it yet, I definitely recommend checking it out.
