Such a great book- the story of 2 sisters the younger one adopted to be a playmate/companion for the older one. The older one vowed when they were both young to always protect & take care of her younger sister.
Amy's adoptive parents never showed any love or affection towards her-and nothing she did every pleased them.
Circumstances occur which makes the older sister Diana look into finding Any's birth mother.
When she locates Amy's birth mother she finds out that Amy has a brother and 3 sisters.
Diana becomes friends with Amy's older sister and develops feelings for her Amy's brother.
When Amy discovers that Diana found her birth family and got to know some of them she is jealous and angry. But soon forgivers her and is nervous and excited about meeting them.
We learn the circumstances behind Amy's birth mother putting Amy up for adoption. Her birth family was told Amy died at birth (we learn that's because her birth father was in Vietnam at the time of her birth and was presumed dead. Her birth mother would've kept her had she been born a boy but didn't want or need another daughter. She thought the chances of finding another man someday who would want her and her 2 children would be better than if she had 3 children. Her maternal (birth) grandmother hired the lawyer who handled the adoption.
Amy gets to know her brother and older "birth" sister and they enjoy a great relationship. Her birth mother digs into Amy's background and uses the facts to turn the community against her as well as her younger sisters. However when Amy's birth father takes a stand this "smear campaign" becomes useless.
Diana is not accepted as readily but in time Amy's younger sisters come around.
An enthralling story of family and love that endures.
