"No lies"...
I don't even know how to begin. It took me a few hours to get my head around what I read. I cried at work; while I read. I cried on my drive home and can't even think about delving into another book, at the moment. It's just unfathomable to me right now. I don't think I've ever had a book hangover like this. And I certainly haven't had one this year, until now.
I've been a fan of the Rebel Wayfarers since I read Mica. These guys are so kind and loving and are extremely family oriented. Something that's not always so common in the MC stories I've read. With each new installment in this series, I fall more and more in love with the Rebels. Mason has always been my number one. The way he holds his brothers together and keeps them on a path that makes life better for everyone.
Now... as I read Hoss, he slowly inched his way up that ladder in my heart and started to fight for Mason's spot, where he's been since I fell for him so long ago...after reading Mica. In each of the books, Hoss has been present but I was never really able to get a sense of who he was, as a man. He stayed in the shadows and did his part of being VP to Slate and helping when the Rebels faced trouble. But getting to know him now? My heart swelled with love for him. He was such an amazing man!! I knew the Rebels were good guys, but getting to know Hoss' heart was an ultimate delight. The way he stepped into a role that he never even imagined having; and did it so effortlessly and wholeheartedly. The tenderness he showed to Hope and Sammy was heartwarming. The protectiveness he possessed was nothing short of enviable. I wanted to be Hope...in every way.
Hope was an entity all on her own. That woman had unimaginable strength no matter what life threw at her; and she didn't let it harden her. Sure she had some issues, but compared to the life she lived, I'm amazed at how strong and sweet and caring she remained. As I read, the one word that kept coming to mind when I saw how Hope continually pushed on?... ADMIRABLE. Hope was a character that someone could aspire to be. Her ability to make lemon-aide out of lemons was amazing. She had her moments of weakness where she doubted her strength and questioned her ability to be the mother she wanted to be, but they were completely unwarranted and only a result of how her life began. She proved over and over that she would do anything and everything to make sure her son, Sammy, had everything and anything he could need or want.
The story wouldn't have been a complete story, had it not been for Sammy. That boy put it all together in a nice and neat bow. For someone so young, he had a strength and maturity WAY beyond his years. It served as a testament to Hope and the mother she was.
With all that being said, I don't know else to convey the heartwarming feels and tearful heartaches this book evoked in me. MariaLisa deMora wrote a story that nearly crippled me so much that I didn't know what to do with myself. This was HANDS DOWN, the best in the series!! I can't wait to see what will happen for Duck.
