Kalli Rivers is a woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Tragic loss and unfortunate circumstance left her with more responsibility than she was ever prepared for, but she managed to build a good life and keeps her eyes focused on her top priority – even if it means she’s putting herself last. Riot Bentley is the hot new actor trying to work hard and make it big in the country’s toughest industry. He shows up for his first high-profile job and is captivated by a woman. But it’s not the leading lady who catches his eye, it’s the beautiful yet reserved costume designer. Luckily for him, persistence is one of his best qualities. Kalli keeps people at a distance for a reason. Not because she doesn’t want love, but because she loves too much already. Riot sees her for who she really is and he isn’t willing to be brushed aside. He wants to give her the love she doesn’t think she deserves. Will Riot’s persistence break through Kalli’s walls, or will she stand strong trying to protect the one thing she holds dear?

Anie Michaels is the author of the Never series, the Private serial, the Love and Loss series, the With a Kiss series, and stand-alone novels The Space Between Us and Instead of You. She started writing her first novel in June 2013 and hasn’t looked back since. Working at home as a full-time writer of books, when she is not pounding on the keyboard she can be found reading, playing with her kids, spending time with her family, and connecting with her close friends. She’s spent her entire life in the Pacific Northwest, lives in Portland, Oregon, and can’t imagine ever being anywhere else… except maybe somewhere tropical.
“I wasn’t ever going to give up, Kal, but I was starting to think you were gone for good,” he whispered in my ear, his fingers gently squeezing my neck.
“I never thought I’d come back either,” I said against his chest. “There are a lot of things that keep me from being happy, but the biggest one is just me. I have to let that go, let go of the fear of losing love, or having love taken from me.” … “Love is supposed to make us feel good, not make us afraid.” … “I’m so tired of being afraid.”
“I’m never going to leave you, Kalli. …”
Never Standing Still (bk1) is the sweet love story about Kalli and Riot. Kalli is a costume designer who travels a lot across the country for her job. She is sweet, caring, beautiful, charming but also tough, strong and financially independent. Kalli is afraid to love and get attached to people. She avoids stand still relationships and her only constant in her life is her baby brother whom she loves and protects with all her heart. He is her only family left and she is over protective towards him because of his fragile health condition. She has built her walls so high that no one could climb it. She enjoys sex but she doesn’t trust anyone fully. She doesn’t tell anyone like how she’s feeling and more personal stuff like that. She doesn’t open up to anyone, not even her best friends, because she’s scared of getting hurt and she’s scared of what they’ll say.
Riot is the male lead in a music video and his working relationship with Kalli soon turns into compassionate love. Riot is a wonderful person, very gentle and caring. When he firstly meets Kalli, he is instantly attracted to her. He pursues her and they soon become lovers. Riot is willing to take the risks, and takes the lead in the romance department. He realizes that Kalli is “the one” and he pursues her with all his heart. In the beginning, his interest fortifies her defenses. But, Riot makes his intentions clear and hopes for her feelings to change.
Taking risks can be daunting but the most rewarding journeys begin with uneasy and faltering steps. And Riot finally manages to get rid of the high walls Kalli has built and make her believe in his love for her. Kalli lets him fully into her life until a tragic event leads her once again to isolation and despair.
Riot sees a future with Kalli, and he waits for that future. He is patient and hopeful that Kalli will come back to him.
This was a great and easy read! I loved the dialogues between the two main characters and I enjoyed the persistent lust in their long distance relationship. This is a definite, without a doubt must read. I don't do spoilers, but there is a huge cliffy and I need the next installment like, yesterday!!!
Copy kindly received in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.
3.5 stars. Dammit, cliffhanger! Why do you do this to me? Told only in h’s POV, which pissed me off because her hot/cold/push-the-H-away character gave me no relief from her annoying POV. But... alas, I need to get to the next book cos I’m dying to know what happens to these two after such a tragic ending. Because it’s a spinoff story, I didn’t have to read the 1st 3 books in this series and was able to understand the story just fine.
I'm not sure what there are so many great reviews for this book.
Summary: Dad walks out on Kal's 7th Birthday Mom remarries, new dad is great. New dad and mom have a son. Kal loves him. Kal goes away to school. Mom, new dad and brother (brother is 7) come to see her. They get in a wreck and both mother and new dad die. Brother is severely brain damaged. Kal refuses to let anyone know about her brother. She refuses to get close to anyone. She meets Riot. She can't get him out of her head. She lets him know about her brother, lets him meet her brother. She pushes him away. She lets him back in. She pushes him away. So on and so on... Her brother dies. She pushes him away...seriously this is a story about a messed up girl who refuses to grow up. It's not a romance. There was absolutely nothing romantic about it. It was more an eye roll book.
**it was well written. It just had way, way, way too much push away. There needed to be some story about them together.
I won't read the next book. This book did not have any enticement to make me want to see just how she would push Riot away. I'd read enough of that in this book. The next book she may let him in but I'm certain, no matter what she'll just push him away.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow. I am totally wrecked right now. Beautiful. Amazing. Fantastic. The story line was incredible, so believable.
Kalli spent her life keeping a distance from everyone. After her dad left when she was little. She does not make friends or do boyfriends. With a job that keeps her moving. She never stands still. When tragedy strikes she is left with putting someone else needs above all others. Kalli will do it for him. Even if loving anyone else will never happen.
Kalli was rough around the edges. A bit cold hearted, or so you think. She is smart, hard working and independent. She has had a hard life. She makes decisions based on what she thinks is best for her situation. Kalli has a lot on her plate. She was handling things the best she could.
Then she meets Riot.
Riot was lovely from page one. I loved everything about his personality. He was kind, understanding, and he loves her with everything he has got. He fights for Kalli. Pushes past her walls and sees the person she really is. He is strong emotionally and she needs that. Their loves was passionate and heartwarming. There chemistry was hot and explosive. Then when you think the hot and cold. Give and take has finally come to an end.
Tragedy strikes. Omg this broke me. I was crying like a baby. Then Kalli and Riot relationship is up in the air.
What's going to happen. I need the next book like yesterday.
It was real to life gradual love story which are my favorite.
Erotic scene, and dirty conversations.
I will recommend this book to everyone.
*I was gifted this book by the author for an honest review.
Never Standing Still by the very talented Anie Michaels is absolutely without a doubt fantastic!!! Kalli and Riot Where do I even start? I fell in love with Kalli and Riot's story from the very beginning. They are two very genuine people. These characters are very real and you can feel their emotions throughout the entire book. The way Anie Michaels writes, she places the reader right into the story. The story flows very nicely and kept my attention the entire time. To be honest, I couldn't put my Kindle down while reading Never Standing Still. Now let me get back to emotions. Like I stated earlier, you can feel EVERY single emotion the characters are feeling and going through. My emotions while reading this book went from laughing out loud to AWW that's so romantic to WOW that's HOT to an ....wait, I can't tell you that..you need to read it for yourself!!! I was on an emotional rollercoaster of a ride and I didn't want it to stop. You may think you know what's going to happen, however you will not know until you reach the last few pages. It has been a few days since I have finished this book. Let me say this, Never Standing Still stays with you way after you finish it. It's a book that I will be recommending to everyone and anyone who will listen to me. The story of Riot and Kalli leave you on the edge of your seat and definitely wanting MORE!!! I can not wait for the next book!! Never Standing Still was beautifully written and very, very, very emotional. I give this book FIVE Brilliant Stars!!
Ok so I'm not sure where to start with this review..... This book simply had all the feels a great book needs....Kalli never stands still...no outside love...no relationships...no attachments that is until Riot. Riot was a fantastic character...strong...resilient....kind & caring, he was everything you want in a male lead and he never let Kalli forget him...he was tenacious enough that she had no choice but to give in....eventually. But in the midst of this book their was one star for me and that was Marcus...I adored him...wanted him happy and boy was he...he too was strong but vulnerable and I smiled for him and with him many times in this book....a truly beautiful boy/man with a huge heart and soul... I became immersed in this story and became comfortable in this book...much like i did with The Never Series and knowing Anie I shouldn't have done because I did not expect that! This book should not be missed....it was breathtaking, i laughed, I screamed and became agitated and I cried(really cried,no actually I sobbed) but despite the events in this book that were so well written ....it was uplifting and Inspirational in its own way and I can't wait for the sequel to see how the characters develop and move on. A cliffhanger...well yes I guess it was....but I like to call it a work in progress!
Where to start? Anie Michaels knows what she's doing, that's for sure. I've read a few of her other books and loved them so reading this one was a no brainer. But wow, you are taken for a ride with Kalli and Riot and it's not a pretty one! I loved both Kalli and Riot from the very beginning and I couldn't wait for them to get it together. But what kind of story would that be? So we are taken on a roller coaster of emotions, not only from them but our emotions are everywhere as well! And just when I thought I could breathe because yeah I held my breath, a lot, Anie does something so cruel, so unbelievable, something that had me gasping out loud, something I am still sitting here shocked about. This story is only beginning and it was OVER!! HOW? WHY? OMG, Anie you are the devil!! I freakin loved it! I can't wait for more!! It takes an exceptionally great writer to evoke the kind of emotions you get while reading Anie Michaels words and I can tell you with 100% certainty you won't be disappointed in this book, now you might have some choice words for her but definitely not the book!
Damn, that was a great story! I love any book that has me thinking about all day long. I'm just going about my day, and the story just keeps playing a movie in my head...Love those books....although I'm heartbroken that it had to happen that way. What a well done tortured soul and a guy that wouldn't give up. That Riot is some good people, and ah, yum! If we could all be so lucky to be tied to that rope..but what a tragic ending. 23 days to find out the rest. now that will be torture.
I love Anie Michaels books. I have read alot of them. this one is my favorite thus far. this book takes you on an emotional roller coaster that you won't want to stop reading. I bust up laughing at some parts, and had my heart ripped apart by others.... loved it
Anie Michaels is such a fabulous writer. Reading one of her books is such a joy for the senses. We met Kalli in the other books in the Never Series and she has always intrigued me. Something about her quietness always made you think she was holding herself back even from her best friend, Ella. Kalli has a lot of baggage that she carries with her and it's heartbreaking. She's successful and travels for work, but she rushes home to care for her brother and doesn't really live her life for herself. When she gets a last minute call for a job that she can't turn down, her life flips upside down when she meets Riot. She is instantly attracted to him, but she knows it can't be anything serious because of the life she lives. She travels a lot and cares for her brother and believes she has no time for a love life. Riot is persistent and gets Kalli to agree to a day together. She can't hide her attraction and she finally gives in. It's wonderful and passionate but short lived when tragedy strikes. Will Kalli push everyone that loves her away? Can she let Riot in before it's too late? I can't wait to read the conclusion to their story!
"It's nice to meet you," Riot said. Sweet baby Jesus. His voice was deep and musical. I'd never met anyone with a voice I wanted to listen to forever, but his was gorgeous.
Riot scoffed. "If you know a man who could build this house himself, I don't want to meet him. I would melt into a pool of emasculated mush around him, I’m sure."
"That's all I've got, Kal. I'm offering myself, any part of me that you will take."
Never Standing Still is part of the Never series by Anie Michaels. It is the story of Ella’s good friend Kalli. It is book one of the Never duet within the series. Kalli has a life she keeps to herself. Her responsibilities weigh heavy on her, to the point that she keeps everyone at arm’s length and never lets a man into her heart. That is until she meets Riot. Struggling with her feelings and responsibilities, keeps Kalli questioning everything she does and feels. The end of the book unexpectedly leaves the reader very emotional and wanting to waste no time to get to the next book. I loved this story as I have the others in this series. The characters are well developed and easy to love. Definitely worth reading.
I hate starting a book and having it just leave me hanging. I even check the reviews each time before starting a book to see if it's a cliffhanger..... unfortunately none of them mentioned it! It was a good book well written with just a few typos. I wish authors didn't constantly do this split a book in two or three just to try and make more money
Oh boy, as much as I loved this book and the story, Kalli annoyed the hell out of me. Okay, yeah you have a brother with a disability, but putting him before your own happiness can only get you so far, trust me I know, my own brother is disabled. And the way she always doubted Riot really pissed me off, and how she hid Marcus' existence from her close friends made it seem like she was embarrassed. Yeah, I get it, you don't want pity from everyone you tell but I mean, you should at least tell people, and if they don't like that, that's their problem, you don't need those types of people in your life. All the trials and tribulations Kalli and Riot went through as a couple was all for nothing, because as soon as that horrible accident happened, Kalli pushed away the one person in her life who wanted only to help her grieve and comfort her in the long depressing journey ahead. But no, she had to go treat Riot like shit, and do the only thing she knew would make him leave. Be a complete bitch.
Riot was amazing, loving and always courteous, he definitely proved Kalli wrong and showed her that she was the man she needed in her life. I loved Riot but hated all the shit her went through with Kalli, still made a good story. And yes apart of me does feel sorry for Kalli, for everything she has been through and everything she had to take on as Marcus' primary carer but being a bitch and putting someone else's happiness before your own can lead to a rather lonely road.
A great novel. I didn't read the first three but this book can stand alone as it develops the main characters and the supporting ones. This book was an easy read but also a very interesting one. I couldn't put it down!
I give this novel five Stars. Could not put it down, very cold to read, then very warm and very sad. Emotions engulf you!. Two very strong personality is hard to overcome. if you like to get caught up in a book "Anna Michaels" wrote it for you!
I love him so hard. It’s funny, his name that is. It completely contradicts his personality. He is sweet, so sweet. While my first choice is a sometimes over-bearing alpha male book boyfriends but I fell so hard for Riot. He is sweet, caring he’s playful with hints of a cocky side to him sometimes. He’s honest, hot and did I mention I love him?
“He was absolutely breathtaking. His eyes. My God, his eyes. I’d never seen eyes that color. They were golden, a shiny caramel color. And he was smiling. His smile was heartbreaking.”
This is my first book from Anie Michaels and I certainly loved it. Kalli has her work life and home life and both are very different and very separate. She works hard as a costume designer for movie/music video sets. Your heart will immediately ache and break for her. Due to her past she builds a wall and completely withdraws herself from any emotion possible. The only emotion that is allowed in is when she is at home, the part of her life she lets no one in to and even though she has made some friendships she even keeps them at arms length.
“…denying my best friend the ability to get close to me. It hurt keeping her at arm’s length, but I’d been so burnt in the past, this gentle sting was no comparison.”
Riot Bentley. Ok so before I go on and on declaring my love for him again. He is a newbie actor that is getting into the business and is recruited to be the model in a music video that Kalli is also working on as the costume designer. While from the very start Riot is nothing but a gentleman and sweet he makes his feelings and intentions known and begins to try chip away at the walls around Kalli. He proves himself to Kalli time and time again and now he just has to make her believe it, in her heart.
“He knew he was breaking me down, cracking away the glass walls I’d put up around me. With every sway of our hips, with every breath I felt feather across the skin of my neck, I was sure he could feel me crumbling.”
There is so much emotion that will be pulled and picked at from reading this book. Every time you think you know, like the know it all readers we are, we’re are proven wrong. Kalli can be a bit of a complicated character, frustrating even and that can be understandable and forgiven because she has it tough from her past and her present. Saying that though, I may be the only one with this thought, but it got to a certain point in the book (you will possibly know when you read it, what I’m talking about) and I got pissed off at her from there on out and even when my heart should have been breaking for her I couldn’t. I got even more pissed off at her actions I seriously wanted to slap her. I’m not sure if she deserves Riot but I want Riot to be happy. This book has pulled such a reaction from me and I can’t fault Anie at all or her writing although I’d like to take a star from Kalli, this story was powerful and beautiful. I honestly have no idea how or where Anie is going to go with the conclusion of Kalli and Riot’s story and that makes me nervous but I need it like now. - Jade x
Anie has done it once again...she has cut deeply into my heart with another emotional ride and I love her for it. Her writing is flawless and beautiful. You meet Kalli throughout the Never Series but you do not need to read it to read her story.
Kalli is a costume designer and takes her all over the place for work on T.V and movie sets but the one that changes her life happens to be a last minute job on a music video. When she meet the male lead for the video she feels something there but she is not the type to date and she has a feeling if she got close to Riot, she would be breaking her own rules and it would break her in the end.
Kalli has to think not just about herself, but about her younger brother that has special needs. She is his only family and her responsibility. She is afraid to get close to anyone and then have them leave when it is too much for them to handle. When Riot actually gets Kalli to open up to him about her fears, he is understanding and will not let her push him away. He wants her and wants to prove to her that he will not just go away.
Riot and Kalli have to figure out where things are going and being long distance is hard but it also makes them get to know each other on a more personal level and not just on a physical one. And once Riot meets Marcus, Kalli's brother things click. Riot doesn't see Marcus as a deal breaker, he sees him as a perk. But can Kalli take the risk of loving Riot and having him get close to Marcus? Will the distance just be too much for them?
I loved Riot and Kalli's story! Riot is carefree, funny, sexy and sweet. He sees right through Kalli and is very patient with her. Many men would just say F-it and move on to the next woman but not Riot. And Kalli is independent, stubborn and a very loving sister. She only wants the best for Marcus. That doesn't mean I didn't want to smack her a few times. Is Riot what is good for Marcus?
I highly recommend this book. Hardcore. It is unique and emotional. I laughed, cried, swooned. It made me happy, mad and sad. What a ride and you will not regret getting on. I can't wait for the next book.
Quotes:
“Okay, you’ve got a deal, but I’m warning you: I don’t give in easily.”
“You couldn’t keep count?” I raised my eyebrow at him. “Of course I counted, I just wanted to see if our numbers were the same, wanted to make sure you didn’t sneak one past me,” he said with a wink.
“I’m not asking you to rearrange your life, I’m just asking to be allowed in. I just want in.”
Never Standing Still is my favorite Anie Michaels book to date. From the moment I started reading I could tell this book was going to take me for a ride on a rollercoaster of emotions, but the direction Anie Michaels took Kalli’s story was completely unexpected. I loved every twist and turn of this heartfelt story, finding myself unable to stop reading. Kalli and Riot have a chemistry that absolutely smolders, giving Never Standing Still an intensity that is utterly addictive.
Kalli was everything I had hoped she’d be after meeting her in the Never series and Riot was the perfect man for her. I adored the obvious pull that Anie Michaels created between these two and the subtle sparks of wanting that always seemed to show up whenever their paths crossed. The inimitable connection between Kalli and Riot seemed to transcend the physical and emotional, settling itself deep within me and allowing me to feel the impact of their unmatched bond. Kalli is everything I love in a female character. Her intelligence, kindness, and capacity for love shines throughout the story, making her the kind of character you can completely lose yourself in. As Riot begins to make sense of this beautifully complex woman, Anie Michaels reveals the insecurities and innate vulnerabilities that can only be born from a lifetime of hurt. Her fear and hesitancy really resonated with me, allowing me to fully connect with Kalli and giving her a genuineness that can’t be denied.
From moment to moment, I didn’t know where Kalli and Riot’s journey would take me next and that had me unable to stop reading. Anie Michaels has crafted Never Standing Still in a manner that allows for both the instant heat between our couple and the gradual simmer of a developing connection. The story took several emotional turns that had my heart soaring and aching all at once, until I was drowning in the way this book had me feeling. Anie Michaels’ writing grows by leaps and bounds with each new novel and once again she has blown me away. Her well constructed plot and carefully developed characters seem to effortlessly come together in a brilliant collision of heart and soul that makes Never Standing Still truly one of a kind. I loved every gut-wrenching, breathtaking minute of Kalli and Riot’s story; Anie Michaels has left me desperate for more.
I received this book from Enticing Journey Book Promotions in return for a fair and honest review.
Kalli lived a glamourous life to those that didn’t know her. She was responsible for dressing artists for tv shows, movies, and videos which involved shopping, lots of it and meeting famous celebrities. Little did she know that her job would put her in touch with an up and coming actor, Riot, who she couldn’t keep herself from. He was different. He wanted to break down her walls and get to know the real person, to learn the heartbreaking story of Kalli. He wanted to learn about her, the secrets she kept hidden from those she called her friends. Would the idea and possibility of love between them be strong enough to hold them together during the tragedy that is strong enough to break Kali for good?
Anie Michael’s is a genius! I have yet to read a book by her I did not instantly fall in love with the story and the characters. This was not any different. As many are aware, this is sort of a continuation of her Never series, but is written based solely about Kalli and Riot, and is part of the Never Duet. She wrote this book during the same time frame as the other series but had a way of writing it so you felt it was separate. There wasn’t a repeat of much from the other book so it didn’t feel repetitive like other books I have read that have been written in the same time frame. She did a great job on that so the readers wouldn’t feel like they were reading part of the story word for word for a second time.
This story is heartbreaking, exciting, happy, and incredibly tragic. The emotion is raw. Their feelings for one another feel real. Kalli is a strong and independent woman. She is not unbreakable though. Her character was written with such finesse that it was easy to visualize her and how she would be if she were real. I didn’t want to put this book down. The story keeps you reeling, wanting more, and needing to know more.
This is a definite must read, without a doubt. Pick up your copy today, you won’t be sorry you did. If you want to learn more about Kalli’s great friends in her book, then pick up Anie’s other Never Series and read those also – there is nothing to be disappointed by this Author’s work!
Callie’s story is a roller coaster ride of emotional connections that bring a world of possibilities her way if only she’s brave enough to reach out and grab them. With a tragic past of loss and heartbreak Riot enters her life and just as she’s starting to trust him the unthinkable happens and their world will never be the same. I listened to the audiobook version and I enjoyed the narration performances of Aletha George and also Nelson Hobbs in the epilogue.
When Kalli Rivers is hired as the costume designer for the latest "It" girl's music video, she is thrilled! She knows what a great opportunity it is for her career and is prepared to work hard and prove herself. What Kalli doesn't count on is Riot Bentley, the video's male lead. He is an up and coming model and actor with an eye for Kalli. Riot soon learns that Kalli has high walls built up and breaking through them might be harder than he thought. Kalli was an interesting character. She has dealt with so much loss and pain that she guards her heart fiercely. Even when someone makes it in, Kalli struggles to admit it, even to herself. I liked that she was stubborn, scared, somewhat flawed. I really enjoyed Riot. He was a breath of fresh air; sweet, funny, persistent, open, and loving. It was easy to see how someone with relationship phobias could cave to a man like Riot. Never Standing Still wasn't your typical love story. Kalli and Riot's romance was a bit different from most of the books I read as much of their time together is spent apart. We see them grow close from a distance, living in separate states and only connecting over the phone and Skype. I really liked how Anie Michaels was able to show the progression of their relationship and their feelings even though they were rarely together. Kalli's constant self sabotaging did grow tiring at times but I was excited when things were going smoothly. When Kalli and Riot were together, sparks flew! Their chemistry was palpable. I had not read Michaels' Never Series prior to reading this and I did not feel as though I was missing anything. I was intrigued with the side characters stories and would like to read their story but it wasn't essential to my enjoyment of this book. Anie Michaels delivered a well written, solid novel with endearing characters and an engaging storyline. I can't want to read the rest of Kalli and Riot's story in the next book.
