The Beachy Bride #2

Katherine in Gold

Rate this book
*Warning: this is a love story with sexual situations and copious swearing. It also deals with an inappropriate relationship between an underage girl and a much older man.

When Katherine Symes experiences heartbreak at the age of twenty, she picks herself up, dusts herself off, and declares no man will ever break her again. The independent, potty-mouthed Katherine makes no apologies for how she lives her life. Marriage, babies, and husbands are ideas she’s never even entertained. There is only one thing she’s never had the guts to do.

Open her own cafe.

The day of her best friend’s engagement, a stranger bulldozes his way into her life. Handsome, tall, and annoying as hell, he pushes all her buttons. A mutual acquaintance introduces them, and the stranger, Holst Rutherford, wastes no time in presenting Katherine with half ownership in a coffee shop he wants to open in Laguna Beach; he just doesn’t want to do it alone.

Can she put up with Holst to achieve her lifelong dream?

Holst moved to the coastal town of Laguna Beach with clear intentions: a fresh start, concentrate on his new business, and enjoy the beach at his doorstep. After ending a toxic relationship, he never considered entering a new one. But there is something about the ever-combative Katherine which makes him realize she could be much more than a business partner. She just might be the one.

However, she is going to need a little convincing

In the second installment of the Beachy Bride series, we follow the story of Katherine and Holst. A tale of shaking off the past, embracing the future, and finding true love.

Julie is a southern California native, a fan of a really good story (preferably a romance with a happily ever after), really good pie (preferably pumpkin)and copious amounts of coffee (preferably Folgers).

She has always enjoyed writing and at one time thought she might be a singer/songwriter. The 'writer' part is that one that stuck.

Julie is obsessed with Pi...the equation and the food. She's allergic to cats, cantaloupe and hates mushrooms. So if you ever want to give her a gift, those are out for sure.

She currently lives with her romance hero husband and two boys in Melbourne, Australia.

Attitude and Spunk will get you the gold…

***4.5 Stars***

Katherine In Gold was a winner for me. I connected with the characters, loved the dialogue and finished it with a big smile on my face. We start off the story with Katherine looking at her life and deciding she needs to make some changes. The first and smartest decision is to kick her boyfriend to the curb. Goya is convinced he’s in love with Katherine. He’s an arrogant artist who thinks he’s better than everyone else. Unfortunately, Katherine’s only interested in one thing from Goya and it wasn’t his heart. Her lifetime dream of owning a coffee shop, becomes a reality when she finds a business partner in Holst.

Holst is getting over a very messy relationship. He’s not looking for love, but immediately feels an attraction for his business partner. Holst is ready to move on from his past and decides that Katherine might just be who he wants to move on with. There are a few deep and dark themes in this story that are handled beautifully by this author. Katherine has been hiding her anguish behind booze and sex. Holst can see her struggle and decides she needs to face her demons. When she tells him her secret, he handles it sensitively. We do not go back in history and see what has happened we just get a glimpse through Katherine’s explanations.

Holst and Katherine are smoking hot together. The dirty talking sex scenes are explosive. Holst has this way of instructing Katherine to get what he wants. It’s dominant without being insulting and if my hubby started talking to me that way…I’d stop wearing underwear.

This is a love story that was beautifully written. I loved the feelings this story brought out in me. These characters were real, their lives and their friends were people I can imagine meeting and J.B. Hartnett has made a world in Laguna Beach that I want to visit. I’ve finished this book on a high and I can’t wait for more.

Katherine in Gold by J.B. Hartnett was a sweet, sexy, and beautiful book that dealt with complex, flawed, and real characters who manages to capture our hearts with their past. What I loved about this book was that Ms. Hartnett showcased two people finding love and healing. For Katherine, her broken heart and the walls that she built up were slowly crumbling when she meets Holst. Holst was just perfection. He was sweet, beautiful, and protective of Katherine. He made her see that she was worthy of love and slowly he made her see how special she was to him. So will Katherine embrace this love? Or will she run?

#KatherineInGold

“For me, my Katherine, it was your heart. The day in the bridal shop, standing that that dress…I discovered treasure…I knew in that moment, I’d found treasure. You were my Katherine in gold.”

If you are looking for a sweet palpable and breathtaking beautiful romance then I highly suggest you to read Katherine in Gold. Hearts will melt and swoon as Holst reminds us all that fairy tales do exists. As always, Ms. Hartnett will take her readers on one beautiful journey with tangible emotions. A must read for any romance aficionado!!!

**FULL REVIEW**

“One thing to know about me, Holst: when I give my word, I never go back on it. Not ever.”

First, let me start by saying I love J.B. Hartnett. I have read every book she’s written and will continue to do so. Her stories hold a magic all their own, one that reminds me that love can be simple in all its complexities. They show that even though there are heavy situations, it can be light and breezy. I love her style of writing, the characters she entwines effortlessly from one series to the next, and her setting is straight out of a postcard.

Just like with her Leaves Series, and now with the Beachy Bride Series, I am invested. I have fallen love with each and every person…and this story centers around Katherine.

Katherine and Victoria are best friends and have worked together at a local design studio/furniture show-house. When Tori leaves to follow her passion into her own Stationary Shop, right next to Beachy Bride in Laguna, Katherine takes over where Tori left off…but something was missing.

Having the urge to do something all her own, and to push the demons of her past away without the crutch of a man’s body next to hers, Katherine takes a leap of faith…jumping headfirst into business with Holst. Newcomer with his own demons and dreams large enough to match Kath’s.

Problem is, when two people are attracted to each other, business and pleasure don’t always mix. Except when they do…

What can I say, I’m a sucker for a good love story filled with enough angst and emotion that make the characters not only relatable, but real. Kath’s past was meant to be dark and honestly, horrifying, but I didn’t really see it that way. Yes, it was horrible in the technicality of it all, but at the same time…tame. Tame compared to other storylines with the same subject matter, and it was just one more thing about Hartnett that I love. She has a way of romanticizing things that are tragic and making her characters strong because of it. I don’t know, maybe I’m just a touch morbid…

Overall, this is a great love story. One of turmoil, pasts colliding with the present, overcoming demons that seem to not just fill closets, but shake the very foundations these relationships are built. I love the friendships, the poetry, and emotions…I cannot wait to read about the next “Beachy Bride”.

Katherine in Gold is the second in The Beachy Bride series by J.B. Hartnett. Not only was I excited when I saw it arrive on my Kindle having loved the first book I the series Bride in Bloom. But also intrigued by the warning author had added at the start the synopsis. I’m a big fan of the author, and I do love books with the hint of a possible wedding so I couldn’t wait to dive in!

“It all starts with the dress. The guy comes later”

Well, I wasn't disappointed I loved it. Katharine was independent and sassy, and heartbreak had left her with her walls up, vowing never to let any get close until Holst that is. Holst is all man alpha and sexy, and the one who makes her see things differently the man. I like Katherine and could totally understand because of her past, why she reluctantly let Holst get too close. Holst is a man who is going to make you swoon; he is so my kind of man.

“I would embrace the fact I was following my dreams, and ignoring everything else surrounding it”

“There was much more to Katharine, and each and every time I was in her presence, I felt a pull to learn more”

Katherine in Gold is beautifully written romance book about true love, trust, friendship, healing, moving on from the past and taking a chance. It was emotional, funny and intense at times with characters that you can’t help but love, as they pull you into the story. It’s a must read for all you romantics out there. J.B Hartnett is an amazing writer, who knows how to write a great romance story that make you feel with great characters.

“When someone gives you happiness, try to fill their world with beauty”

And one part did make me laugh, and I have to message Julia to let her know I have a brother called Devon!! ;-) If you have read the book and seen a photo of me on social media, then you will understand what I’m saying. Hahaha

5 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Again, I am absolutely in love with the characters that J.B. Hartnett writes. She manages to write complex, flawed, beautiful, real characters that I always seem to have a strong connection with. The dialogue and thought process of each character balances so well. There is always this great dynamic going on. I feel apart of their world.

In addition to these wonderful characters that I have come to cherish she also writes a compelling story that keeps moving. Sure I get into the book and my emotions are pulled but it's never to the extreme that I find myself saying "This is ridiculous!" or "That would never happen!", which can severely ruin a book for me. It's always something that I can relate to. I find myself invested in the sutuations and the outcomes.

I'm addicted to this author.
I want more.
I need more.

So as I'm reading this book I just kept imagining the shops located next to Taco Loco on PCH and low and behold 30% in and Taco Loco gets a shout out in the book.

I'll love this book for the Laguna references alone.
It was a cute story but I did find that the writing style made it difficult to connect with the characters. I don't know what it was about it exactly but I just felt like things were happening but I never connected with the events. Also, there was plenty of character development but nothing in regard to the MC's relationship development. It happened too fast and without any real emotion.

But I will say that I will never fucking touching Frodo's book because, fuck you. Piece of shit asshole. Especially after what he did and instead of grove long and fighting for Dee he's being seen with random women all the time? Gross. Can't redeem a woman hitting alcohol who also fucks other women rather than fight for the woman they claim to love.

This was an absolute beautiful and breathtaking romance! KATHERINE IN GOLD has to be one of my top fave romances of the year! This read gutted me in more ways than one and I couldn't be more grateful for it. These characters were amazing, the storyline was just brilliant. The female lead, Katherine, just blew me away. I related to her on so many levels. She buried herself so deep in my heart that I felt for her during tough times, cheered with her through the good, and cried with her through the bad. And Holst, the male character, was EVERYTHING you could ever want in a hero in a romance novel. Gorgeous, sweet, sexy, charming, with a touch of dominance all throughout.

This is a story filled with so much heart, so much love, and so much beauty. I never wanted it to end.

"I wanted her. I wanted to take all that attitude and fuck it away...her sarcasm, her filthy mouth, her passion, her pain, and show her what a real man was."

To say that Katherine is an independent woman would be an understatement. She is a spitfire. She has no filter and she hides behind her sassy attitude and her sarcasm. She has concrete walls surrounding her heart, but when she meets Holst, those walls slowly start to crumble. And when Holst sees behind the facade, and actually sees the beautiful woman behind the mask, Katherine's heart starts to beat again. She starts to heal. He makes her feel beautiful, sexy, and worthy of great love. Katherine is holding onto her pain. She is strong, but Holst makes her want to let go of the pain and share the strength with him.

"Open your eyes so I know you hear what I'm saying."

"Please stop,"

"You opened the door for me, now let me the fuck in."

KATHERINE IN GOLD is a love story that I could read over and over again. It put a huge smile on my face and completely warmed my heart. I'm in love with this series, the characters, the setting. It's a thing of perfection and I can't wait until Hartnett takes us on her next lovely journey. It is sure to be elegant, charming, and magnificent. This was a definite TOP PICK for me and a total MUST READ for romance readers everywhere!

Though I was really excited to read it, I didn’t expect to like Katherine in Gold more than I loved J. B. Hartnett’s Bride in Bloom. But wow. Just wow. I fell completely head-over-heels in love with. Katherine in Gold. This is a book that I will pick up and read over and over and over again, just because.

When I read, I love the idea of suspending my disbelief and being lost in the story and falling in love with not only the characters, the words on the page and the idea that this world they are in exists. That the characters connect with each other in all these ways truly makes you forget that they are of the fictional world. To me, when that happens, you don’t question it; you simply savor the experience, because it is magic.

Bride in Bloom was a magical book for me, and I really think lightening has been caught in the proverbial bottle, because Katherine in Gold was just such a great read for me. The characters in this little community are like a family – some are actually related – but as you read the book, you understand the sense of love that they have for each other, it is pure and unconditional. Each knows that within the arms of their friends, there is safety and that it is never in question.

Katherine/Kath is simply a pistol. She is the most loving and loyal friend, with mouth like a sailor. As we get to know her, it is clear that her life has not been quite easy and honestly, it will break your heart. She has quite the fortress built around her heart and Holst is the perfect person to help her knock them down.

You will fall in love with Holst. He’s not perfect by any stretch, but he good man with a good heart who sees his match in Katherine and learns her soul better than even her best friend. Holst felt like poetry to me, I can’t quite explain it, but there was this flow to his personality that allows the reader to connect with him in a visceral way. I thought Cam (Bride in Bloom) was pretty amazing, but Holst had me swooning – a lot.

Then there is the magic of Holst and Katherine. These two were so incredibly expressive and brought out the very best in each other. Both needed to find a partner that was just that – someone who would be their balance and love them as no one else could. They were a perfect match.
I really wish the next book in this series was here, because I can’t wait for the rest of the books, because the couples involved have such compelling stories that are begging to be heard. No pressure J. B. Hartnett, but I really need Frodo & Dee.

I loved Katherine in Gold and know you will too.

Favorite Quotes:

“Probably for the first time ever, just the thought of you makes my heart beat faster, Katherine.”

“I had this top-of-the-line force field built around me… and you got through. I mean, I’m kinda bummed in a way, because I worked really hard on that thing.”

“I fear the road ahead will be rocky for the two of you, but a straight road to anywhere isn’t very interesting.”

“For me, my Katherine, it was your heart. The day in the bridal shop, standing in that dress… I discovered treasure… I knew, in that moment, I’d found treasure. You were my Katherine in gold.”

“My mom began to fan herself, Becky let out a little sigh, and I… well, I was me. ‘Dude, Cam, ovaries exploding all over the inside of my pretty dress.’”

“We convened in the sacred meeting place of women… the bathroom…”

My Review:

I am in total fan-girl mode over J.B. Harnett. Having read two of her masterpieces in a row, I find myself in a tizzy over having to obey my calendar and now read someone else. I am in awe of her skills, and am of a mind to create a JBH shrine and adorn it with well-dressed Barbie dolls clad in long formals. Due to the subject matter covered, Katherine in Gold was a heavier and more emotionally intense read than Bride in Bloom, but I loved it almost as much and found the writing to be of the same high quality. Katherine was a bit more difficult to follow as the narration and conversations were as unpredictable and emotionally varied as the lead character, but thankfully the same clever humor, witty banner, and smartass snark were sustained. I remained intrigued and enthralled by the story line and am completely fascinated by the unique and mystical gentleman known as Frodo. Even without the other fun and distinctive characters with their own possible storylines, I would continue to read this series just to delve further into him alone. More please!

The love between Katherine and Holst was unbelievably … SEXY!
I loved the character of Katherine, she was introduced in Bride in Bloom (which I also loved). Katherine is a strong woman who tells it like it is. Love that about her.She meets Holst but acts like she likes him. She has walls around her heart and doesn’t want to allow anyone in. Something in her past has caused her to be this way, and Holst sees that there is something there and wants to be the one to help her through it.

I love how the author writes her characters. I cheer for them through the good, and what to punch the ones that are causing issues. In this story, there are plenty of “issues”, between both Holst and Katherine, but the beautiful part about it is watching them work through them. And the sex between them… WOW! I need to move to this town, because the woman seem to find the one, and they are HOT!

Holst is just sexy on a stick… when he says “For me, my Katherine, it was your heart. The day in the bridal shop, standing that that dress…I discovered treasure…I knew in that moment, I’d found treasure. You were my Katherine in gold.” I mean… really… swoon worthy.

And I got chills when Katherine got tattoos. I can’t say what they are, or why she got them, I don’t like to spoil anything, but WOW… heartwarming and made me tear up.

Thank you J.B. Hartnett for another book that took me away from reality and made me fall in love all over again. Truly a beautiful story!

I highly recommend reading Bride in Bloom before reading this one. It isn’t necessary, but it does tell you a bit more about the characters that you will read about in this story.

I received an ARC of this book from TRSOR in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.

Nobody stays golden throughout their lives. At some point, we get broken, become marred with mistakes that we make along the way. However, there is always a way to move past what happened and let the past stay where it should be. At some point, a person gets himself into a mess. But we can move on to other more beautiful things.

This is what Katherine in Gold was mostly about. Two people who've been burned. Katherine may have had the harder time moving on. However, it doesn't mean that what Holst experienced was trivial. I loved that this story was about two people who have found love in each other when they weren't looking for it at all.

I also loved that the hero was a real hero. He was the one who saved the heroine. He was the one who showed her how love should b. He is not perfect. He had his own skeletons. But that's just how things are. We don't move on because the new person is perfect. we fall in love with them because that's what we feel.

I loved Katherine and Holst together. I also enjoyed seeing the previous characters from the first book. As a second book, Katherine in Gold is easily read as a standalone. However, I still suggest you read the first book too because it is equally good and worth every minute you spend reading it.

J.B. Hartnett has once again given us a sweet, heartwarming love story that also had heat and complex turns. I definitely enjoyed this book, and I'd be a fool not to recommend this to anybody. It's a really good book that won'tlet you down.

As a teacher, I thought I knew a lot of words that have multiple meanings but, after reading Katherine in Gold, I have now added two new words to that list – “dude” and “whore”. So not only has J. B. Hartnett entertained me with her writing, she’s also educated me!
Seriously though, Katherine in Gold is literally worth its weight in gold. It’s one of those books that makes you smile and laugh; it makes you sigh in contentment; it makes you angry and it simply makes you feel good.
This book is full of rich characters, most of whom you would be familiar with if you’ve read Bride in Bloom. (But it's not necessary to read BIB.)Some of them you will love and some you will hate. Well, at least, that’s how I felt. But the important thing is that every single one has an important part to play in Katherine and Holst’s story. By the way, I love that name…..Holst.
But I also loved this story because it made me feel so many things, but the icing on the cake was the last chapter and the epilogue; both of which left me with a smile on my face.
I gave this book 5 golden stars.

Almost perfect!

There's nothing I didn't love about this book and the characters. If I could change one thing,it would be to expound on what happened to Kath in her youth. A glimpse into the "grooming" she endured, just so the confrontation that takes placement so instant.

Highly recommend this book, as well as the other one in this series.

"It all started with a dress."

That statement is the basic theme for the Beachy Bride series, but the stories are about so much more than the pieces of fabric and lace that provide the inspiration for the journeys.

Katherine, or Kath, is Tori's best friend who was introduced in Bride in Bloom. She is a bit of a free spirit, but her demeanor is a well built facade to hide a painful past that not even her bestie is privy to. When she meets Holst, that facade starts cracking immediately. He reminds her far too much of a man from her past and her instant reaction is to turn into a contrary rude shrew every time he speaks, regardless of the fact that he generally didn't deserve it and he wants to be her business partner (at least to start).

Holst recognizes her reaction as a defense mechanism and calmly takes it in stride. At 36, his life experiences seem like they have aged him beyond his years and he has secrets of his own. But the more he sees Katherine, the more he SEES her and wants to know her better. He can see right through the facade as if it doesn't exist and that scares her more than anything else. When she tries to break off her relationship with her current hookup Goya who is getting too serious, he reacts badly, turning mean and nasty throwing her age and life choices in her face due to his wounded pride. Although he is spouting off recklessly and at 33 she is far from over the hill, a few barbs hit a little too close to home, but Holst is there to pick up the pieces after the showdown and is granted his first glimpse into the real Kath.

Holst's demeanor is what I refer to as "surfer zen" and Katherine calls "Eastwood zen". He is in control of his emotions but doesn't hide them when they are necessary, and he lets most things roll off his back like water. Oh and it doesn't hurt that he is actually a surfer which leads to a very interesting scene between him and Katherine that certainly gains her full and undivided attention! He also has a very "old" voice, meaning his speech and mannerisms are reminiscent of times past with wisdom gained through living life to the fullest through both the good and the bad It seemed a little odd to me at first, but as we get to know him, it just fit him and it worked for me.

There is plenty of high emotion and drama as Kath finally reveals her secret, confronts her demons (figuratively and literally), and deals with the fallout from years of suppressed emotions. Holst is her rock and biggest supporter but she has to learn how to accept someone else's help after years of keeping people at a measured distance. And he says some of the best things! Exhibit A:

“You aren’t weak, and I’m sure you can take care of yourself, but I think it’s time you let a man help who will make sure, when all is said and done, you have someone to walk out of battle with at your side.”

And Exhibit B:

"This is you, and this is me. We have an obstacle standing in the way of an ‘us.’ I want this, whatever’s happening here, I want it, and I believe you do, as well. Am I wrong?”
“No,” I replied. “You’re not wrong.”
“Then you should know, I will be relentless in my pursuit of you and in the destruction of that obstacle.”
“Why?”I whispered again.
“Because I’m about to claim you, to make you my Katherine,”he whispered against my mouth.

There are plenty of lighthearted and steamy moments to offset the emotional turmoil as well. Holst has a bit of a dirty mouth and dominant edge that is quite yummy, and that leads to some smokin' scenes. Katherine still maintains her sense of humor, and some of her interactions with Tori, Cam and the rest of their friends had me chuckling out loud. As for that group of friends, they are a unique and diverse bunch, and a few still have stories waiting to be told. The final chapter of the book contained a few gems including a hint about who will get their story next and a bit of insight into the true origin of Katherine's perfect dress. But I think the person who intrigues me the most and who I need to see get a HEA is Frodo, their friend with the tattoo shop. He speaks like a philosopher, but his voice of wisdom is influenced by a good heart and a soul full of pain. After learning a bit more of his history in this book, I am hoping JB is saving his story in the spirit of saving the best for last.

I highlighted a ton of stuff in this book and I know I already included a few quotes above, but I will end with two more that struck me as I was reading.

"Fate… she’s kind of an asshole. Like one of those mean bitches in high school that everyone hated, but were also terrified of her and the power she wielded over them.”

“When someone gives you happiness, try to fill their world with beauty."

4.5 Fantastic stars b Jen Skewes

Katherine in Gold is the second installment in The Beachy Bride series but can be read as a stand alone. I loved this book and I think this just may be my favorite JB Hartnett book. I love the stories that she tells and the characters that she creates. This is Katherine’s story, who we first met in Bride in Bloom.

Katherine is a strong, independent and feisty woman. But underneath that exterior is a woman who is broken. She was hurt so badly 13 years ago by someone that she loved and has never been able to move on from it. She has never told anyone of her secret and what really happened to her that has caused her to be so guarded when it comes to love and relationships. She has not had a relationship with a man since then, only casual sex and nothing more. Then she meets the man who not only make her business dreams come true but will also be the man to make her believe in love again.

Holst is looking to move on from his own past and wants to open up a café. Through a mutual friend he meets Katherine, his future business partner and his future love. Holst is attracted to Katherine from the beginning. He wants her but he sees the walls that she has constructed around her heart. He knows that she is fragile when it comes to love, but he is determined to show her how good they are together. He slowly chips away at the wall that she has put up and Katherine begins to open herself up to Holst and to love again. But Holst has his own past and his own secrets as well. And he is afraid that once he really opens up to Katherine that she will run. And losing Katherine is not an option for him. Will Katherine run or will she embrace love again?

I love this book so much and for so many reasons. The first one, of course being Katherine and Holst. Together they are sexy and the perfect match. Holst will make you swoon. He was a bit of an alpha male with a dominant side but could also be so sweet, gentle, protective and caring when it comes to Katherine. I loved how he was able to get her to open up to him in so many ways. He made her love again and while their love may have seemed quick it didn’t feel like it was insta love at all. What I love about this series, especially this book is how real these characters are. There is no unnecessary drama. The issues that this couple face are real and it makes you feel all of the emotions right along with them. And while their story is real there is a little bit fairytale feel to it as well. It was just the right blend of both.

I loved the secondary characters. We met most of them in the first book but I think we were able to really see their relationships more in this one. Katherine and Tori are best friends and their friendship is one that every woman wants. They are always there for each other no matter what. They laugh and cry with each other and their relationship was just the perfect addition to this story. I felt the connection that these two had. But it wasn’t just Tori that I loved. Katherine’s other friends Dee Dee and Ruby were a wonderful addition to this cast and I cannot wait for their story.

And then there is Frodo who has this really special relationship with Holst. They somehow have this connection and bond. And I just love Frodo. I am not sure what it is about that man but I love him and cannot wait for his story. But it wasn’t just his bond with Holst, it was the moments that he shared with Katherine as well that just melted my heart.

Now let’s talk about Cam for a second, because I loved that man in Bride in Bloom, which is his and Tori’s tory. But there is one moment in this book that made me love him even more. I had tears in my eyes, in a good way. And to be honest there were a few moments like this throughout the book where I felt my eyes getting watery. And not because it was sad or depressing but because sometimes in life there are those moments that you just cannot help getting choked up over and you just find yourself crying. And since I felt like I was a part of these characters lives I felt it all with them. This was an amazing story. I cannot wait for the next ones. And yes I will patiently be waiting for Frodo’s book. Another amazing and beautiful story by JB Hartnett.

I loved EVERYTHING in this story! J.B. Hartnett did it again. I am definitely in love with her writing style! I fell in love all over again with the characters and the mood of the place. I don't know if there is something magic in here, but in Laguna Beach, there is definitely love in the air! Katherine was such an endearing character. She's witty, honest, a true friend and a no filter kinda girl. Behind this strong personality, there was hurt. When you got some the glimpse of her past, it's very ugly from the relationship with her father from her unbalanced relationship with the wrong guy. (There is a warning at the beginning of the book, so you'll fully understand the issue right here). This is the kind of character you want to hug, protect and to be friend with.

IMG_2174

Instead of showing her self pity to the world, she closed off. Trying to comprehend why she was left in this way, desperately waiting for his return. She had a lot in her plate, and in addition to this mess, she had to fight her attraction for Holst, who wanted to open a café, with her. She was very struggling out there! I don't know how she managed it, really!

Can I say I really, really, loved that guy? YES! It's definitely not your shining knight in armor, with his white horse, and has a dark side. All in this character was appealing (I don't talk only about this body), but damn, sometimes I was losing focus, so fascinated by the author's idea of this body. Wow! He is supportive, sweet, a little bit alpha-dominant, and so loyal to Katherine. He made me swoon, sigh so many times, that I knew that I was sold. I appreciated his strong personality too, almost domineering, with this soft side. He was hot and definitely more than attracted with her. He didn't waste his time, and told her exactly his plan. When he wanted something, he took it, but with Katherine he had to be more careful, to let her in without pushing her too much.Katherine was to him his treasure to protect and to stand for, to fight the battles with, no matter what, like his equal.

IMG_2173

Not only she created such a great love story for Katherine and Holst, but there's a bunch of fantastic and so endearing characters, with some promising books to come. There was a terrific dynamic and banter between all the characters.I loved how each one played their part in the way to get them together. It was brillant! J.B is to me an amazing storyteller, writing stories with so much heart, depth, with the perfect balance of fun, emotional and sex parts. It so beautifully written, romantic and so moving! All the feels! For all the hopeless romantics with dirty minds, Katherine and Holst's story is worth its weight in gold! Just stunning. Next book please? Dude, seriously, you have to read this book!

I received an ARC of this book and I loved it so much I had to review this book! Will post also to Amazon on July 9th, when it publishes.

Katherine in Gold by J.B. Hartnett is the first book I have read by this author, and it will not be the last-quite simply I loved it! There is a lot of swearing but that is all part of the charm of the character Katherine. If you are offended by this or by an inappropriate relationship with an older man who breaks her heart, this book is not for you. But that being said, you will miss out on so much-I took a chance-and I am so glad I did.
Katherine is in her 30's, and she is a beautiful woman. However she has been through so much in her young life which, in my opinion causes her to act the way she does. At the beginning of the book she is getting ready to break off another relationship, something she has been doing since 20, as she does not believe in relationships anymore, so she feels this man is getting too close and demanding so she has to let him go. At the same time, she just wants one thing in her life and that is to have her own coffee shop.

The thing I really liked about this book was that there were so many supporting characters and we got to see into their lives a little bit and how they interacted with other characters. In this town in Laguna Beach, Cali., there are several little businesses all clustered around each other and that is where she wants to have her coffee shop-so not only will it be in a good area with all kinds of little businesses, but also these people are all her friends, so it is a good support system for all of them. Katherine however needs a partner so she will have help and that partner comes in the form of an awesome man who knows a few of the neighbors as well and this is Holst Rutherford. He is tall and handsome and he loves to surf, the beach is his life. Holst shows up at Victoria's (Katherine's best friend since school)engagement party and annoys Katherine to no end which he takes absolute delight in doing! Then he tells her he needs her to be his partner for a coffee shop!

At first Katherine is very standoffish, but slowly but surely Holst is turning her around, and the only one who does not see it is her. With Holst, the first time he saw her he knew it was fate, but he was determined they would be together forever. He witnesses her being told off by her artist boyfriend when she went to break up with him at the art gallery showing, and Holst wanted to kick the man's butt but just waited until she left on foot, drove up to her and took her home.

There are so many memorable scenes in this book but I am not going to say anything about them except the whole book is memorable, and one gets the feeling that both Katherine and Holst have baggage they need to talk about to clear the air until they can commit.

The question is can Katherine open up and tell Holst what she has never told anyone not even her best friend she has lived with after leaving home and going to college with? Both girls left home to live and grow up together and support each other! Can Katherine even entertain loving someone, when at the age of 20, as far as she felt, she would always be alone, after what happened, so she accepted it and went on her way promising herself she would never love a man again and feel that hurt?

Can Holst tell her what he went through with his last relationship, and how it almost drove him to drink? How a woman caused him so much grief, he almost could not forgive himself, and certainly not her? He needed a fresh start and going into business at the beach town was what he wanted to do and when he heard her plans he was in!

Read this book, you will love all the emotional angst between not just Holst and Katherine, but all their friends as well, you will love all the plot twists, and the notion that all weddings start with "finding the dress first" and after that finding the perfect mate! We will get to witness so much sadness but so much happiness too! You will get a little glimpse of life in a small town between a bunch of great people!

I gave this book 5***** stars and if I could this would have been a 10 star read!

For my friends:
Bitch, just go read this book before I have to hurt you.
Seriously Dude, just do it.

For everyone else:

Katherine in Gold is the second in the Beachy Brides series – that focuses on a group of friends living in the laid-back beach town of Laguna, California. Katherine is a tough-talking, independent woman who isn’t afraid to live her life by her own terms. She’s written off marriage, kids, the whole shebang. There’s only one thing she wants more than anything…Katherine has had a long time dream of opening her own cafe.

She tells this to her friend Tori (from Book 1), who tells another friend, who tells another friend…and in walks Holst. The man she both wants to kill because he annoys the crap out of her, and the man that can make her dream a reality. Holst is described as “Clint Eastwood. He’s all calm and cool. Eastwood-Zen, that what he is…and he’s hot.” He also reminds her of a man from her past – one that took her heart and never really gave it back.

Now here’s where I HAVE to give the warning: the man from per past is a 100% dick. There isn’t anything graphic, but her past, one that she must confront so she can move forward, deals with a much older man getting involved with, and taking advantage of, a young teenage girl. For years. Like I said: Dick.

Anyhoo – back to the good parts. Katherine and Holst decide to go for it – start their business. It doesn’t take long for that business partnership to move into something much more. Holst doesn’t put up with her crap. She snarky, has attitude, is cranky, and talks trash to him…and that’s what he loves about her.

“I will treasure that back-handed compliment until I take my dying breath, Katherine.”
“Keep calling me Katherine and that dying breath might come quicker than you think,” I rallied, thankful the coffee was bringing me back to my good ole self again.
“There she is.” He smiled wide, and fuck him for having perfectly straight, white teeth.

After the two see each other naked by mistake (his naked is physical, hers – emotional), the two find they are under each others skin and don’t want out. But…how make it work? That’s where the story gets fun.

“There was much more to Katherine, and each and every time I was in her presence, I felt a pull to learn exactly what it was.”

While it’s not necessary to read the first book to understand this one, it does provide background on all the friends. Tori and Cam, Dee and Frodo, Ruby, Drew, and others all make appearances (some more than others).

Hartnett wins again with this one – it’s sweet, frustrating, just a tad bit angsty, funny, hot, and swoon-worthy. My favorite characters are those that I can either see bits of myself (hello, I am Katherine), or my gal-pals (yes, they’re all there as well), and makes me want to hang out with these fictional people. She does a perfect job of capturing the Laguna lifestyle, the language of friends in Southern California (throwing insults at your besties!), and pop-culture references for those that grew up in the 80’s. Living in SoCal, I can tell you…Dude is a noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, expletive, and can be used singularly or as a phrase. Dude. I loved this book (and frankly all her others as well) and can’t wait for the next one.

If Julie were here, I’d sit that bitch down and buy her a margarita! Cheers for another fabulous novel!

Shel: As you may know, we read both books in this series back to back and they compliment each other really well. As companion novels, they feature the same characters, with a focus on a new couple, and the beauty of that is getting more intel on the characters you met in the previous book, right? RIGHT!! Plus, if you haven't read book 1, it's okay because you'll get the details you'll need to know early on in the book. Court: Exactly! Which is why companion series are my absolute favorite. Our previous friends (characters) are still basking in their HEA with little angst, and we get to shift our focus without just drowning people in misery. (Though, to be fair...I love that too!)

Shel: Since many of you may have read Bride in Bloom, I thought it might be helpful to focus on what makes Katherine in Gold similar and different from Bride in Bloom: Court: Clever idea, my Shell. I think you nailed it.

SIMILAR:
humorous/light tone
setting: the same
same ensemble cast--and they're wonderful and supportive
low angst
sexy, steamy scenes
the male protagonist (Holst) uses the female protagonist's (Katherine) full first name--it's a thing in this series, I think?
the past impacts the present
HEA
the time the novel covers is 1+ years
parentals--one set was not great and the other was pretty fantastic And by not great...she definitely means not great.
the dress is important
DIFFERENT:
While the tone was light/humorous I definitely felt the subject matter was more serious. It didn't necessarily overtake every aspect of the novel but it was a heavier presence. It is definitely heavier. I think the warning had me prepared for the worst...but it was handled much lighter than some of the scenes in J.B's previous books, so I didn't feel that it was too much.
Secrets--It felt like the characters were carrying some secrets that weighed them down. These didn't become "issues" or create "drama" but they were there. Oh, I agree. It could have. And for other characters...it definitely did. But I can't elaborate! Dang!
Holst (the male protagonist) was definitely more alpha than Cam in Bride in Bloom and Katherine was also very strong (but like Victoria, she capitulated fairly easily) I liked him more, but also in a different way I think. AND Kath and her Tori...I love these two girls, and their openness with one another that was found. Their bond was special to me more than the love story in each book.
I thought the way the time span was handled in this book was better than in book 1--things were clearer Agreed. The pace felt better to me as well.
We got some in depth information on some of the ensemble cast--and I'm pretty sure I know who our next book will be about.... I feel like that is where we will get all of our angst, y'all...
The ending definitely projected us into more of the future--that was a happy surprise

What am I missing, Court? What are you thinking--any surprises or anything you wanted to focus on? I do have something! I liked the alpha-ness of our MC's in this series, but I also liked that while they're bossy...they're not controlling, and I found it funny that these badasses found the most independent women on the planet!

I think both of these books are really great summer reads--they're light, romantic, sexy, funny, and beachy.

It all starts with a dress. Katherine in Gold is another wonderful book by JB Hartnett. I am loving this series so much I barely have words to describe my love. These characters are so funny, broken, loving, sexy, smart, sassy, crude and just awesome. JB Hartnett writing is flawless and she has this unique way of combining humor, angst, sex and love that makes is the perfect combination. I haven't laughed this much since Bride in Bloom. Somehow these two books have come to me at the perfect time in my life when I needed the laughs and the good tears. We met Kath and Holst is Bride in Bloom. Kath is Tori's kick-ass, hilarious, promiscuous , smart-mouthed best friend. Holst had just moved to town and as soon as they met it was there was fire, passion and ice. Katherine, as only Holst calls her, is extremely attracted to him, but she's not willing to even entertain the idea of sleeping with him because he makes her so mad! But, he just won't go away. He's determined to have her and he uses his pretty words and his sexy mouth to try to convince her that they will be great together. He wants to be business partners with Katherine for starters. He knows that she wants her dream and he wants to help give it to her. Kath is running from something horrible in her past and she doesn't think that she's worthy of Holst's love and affection. He proves her wrong by using her against herself. He sets her body and mind on fire and just watches her burn for him. Their chemistry is insane. Their banter is outstanding! I love that Kath has no filter on her mouth and says fuck more than I do! Holst is just dreamy. With his sexy surfer tan, hot body, dirty mouth and love in his eyes for only his Katherine, he's just swoon worthy. I love that he's older and knows what he wants. He wants a permanent life with this woman and these friends. He knows he's found his forever in this place with these people. I love that we get to see a lot of the girls and Cam and more of Frodo. I want to be welcomed into this fold of friendship. These are my people! I can't wait for the next one!

"Dude," much like the word "whore" or even "fuck," also had many meanings and uses. It was all in the way you said it. And the way Tori said "dude" meant she was having the same reaction I had to the message.

His touch…
Phenomenal.
His head bent to my ear…
Dangerous.

"Let me say now, Katherine, that when it comes to sex, your pleasure is my focus, and, in turn, my reward. My nature is to be dominant, but I require equality. I wish to be no one's master."

"Hurry up and eat," she commanded and began to shovel food into her mouth.
"Is there a fire?" I asked.
"Yeah, in my pants."

Fuck, I was gonna fall in love with him, that dirty, sneaky, big-dicked, perfect-mouthed, motherfucker.

"This is a thing now…isn't it." He chuckled. "You give me the answer I want, it just comes with the bird."

Mostly because, one minute, I wanted to punch him in the dick, and the next, I wanted to drop to my knees and suck it.

Okay, first of all, if you’ve never read anything by J.B. Hartnett you need to understand something. She’s not your typical romance writer where the characters have mild anger towards a past boyfriend/girlfriend and that’s their “trouble.” Her characters have often come into contact with the worst humanity has to offer but come out stronger through the ordeal. It lends a complexity and depth to her books that are hard to find. I’m truly a fan because the way her characters are makes me long to be like them – courageous, strong, independent, fierce and loving.

With that said, let’s get into “Katherine in Gold.” This is J.B. Hartnett’s second book in her series “The Beachy Bride.” Both are fantastic and can make you cry. And they’re only $0.99 right now on Amazon!!! I promise this is a great deal for this series.

*****5 Stars*****

Katherine is a take-charge kind of woman. She does what she wants, dates who she wants and says what she wants (with quite a few bad words). Katherine marches to her own beat and her friends love her for it. But they also want her to be happy and, knowing her wish is to open a cafe, set her up with someone who can partner with her in one. The problem? Katherine knows he could break her heart if she let him.

Holst is a contradiction – both laid back and very determined. Determined to see his dream of a coffee shop brought to fruition he continues to pursue Katherine. But the pain and hurt Holst recognizes behind Katherine’s spitfire facade draw him in more than he anticipated. Carrying his own demons and pain makes him bond with the beautiful Katherine.

As their shop comes together, so do Katherine and Holst. They start their own adorable rhythm, working together, hanging out together and the revelations are at once painful and beautiful. Their issues with each other create lots of humor and love for the reader. All of the characters have such development and depth that they create this fantastical world you long to transport yourself into.

And I don’t want to spoil the book by saying exactly what Katherine and Holst’s demons are, but I do want to say this: if you are turned off of this book because of the warning J.B. Hartnett includes in the description, don’t be. It’s a tragedy but the way J.B. writes about it, it proves how strong the character is and what anyone can accomplish with love and determination. Reading about it gave me tears and shakes but in the best way possible. Holst is such an amazing person and I can only hope that anyone who has gone through what Katherine has, has a Holst in their life.

Both “Katherine in Gold” and “The Beachy Bride” can be read as stand-alones but I would recommend reading both. Both books are emotional roller coasters that leave you so teary, joyful and content, you have to jump right back in. Seriously, have a box of tissues near you when you read this book, you’re going to thank me.

Now I know that the blurb has a warning about an inappropriate relationship but don't let that deter you. It shapes how Katherine goes about her relationships however, there really isn't a lot of detail about what happened. The relationship that Katherine had with that man impacted her more in her lack of faith in happy endings. She always believed them to be for other people but not for herself.

Here in the story, Katherine wants to open a cafe but knows that she needs help. Enter Holst. A hot man who is more than willing to give Katherine everything that she needs. I mean everything ;) But they have a fiery relationship. Katherine admits that she is a bit of a bitch towards him.

*"I was gonna say you're talented, but I was wrong," I mumbled.

"Oh, I have other talents." He grinned.*

Quite the charmer. Holst is very interested in Katherine but she of course wants to keep it strictly business. No funny stuff. Hard to do especially when Holst is determined to make a relationship work for them:

*She was right though. It was all for the best. Keep things professional. Strictly business. Too bad I wasn't going to do that.*

He manages to break down her walls effortlessly. It scares Katherine but it also excites her. She is very happy with Holst... until a whole lot of drama is dumped onto her.

description

It seems that ghosts don't stay in the shadows forever. Katherine and Holst have a lots to deal with and Holst comes clean with Katherine about the fears he has about his past. It gets a bit intense here with all the drama and chaos that ensues. Holst is a fantastic character. Very chivalrous and charming. He is determined to have Katherine fall in love with him and realise that he isn't going to leave her. And Katherine. What a feisty and independent woman. Love her!

What I absolutely love is the sisterhood between the friends within the story. The women are really close especially Tori and Katherine. They actually assist Fate by giving her a helping hand in ensuring a happily ever after which I think is sweet and endearing. I utterly adore Tori and what she did to ensure that Katherine had her happy ending. Very sneaky ;) Everyone deserves a little bit of happiness in their lives and some sparkle. So go on and enjoy this fun and sweet story.

5 Battle Stars
ARC received from J.B. Hartnett for an honest review

Holst Rutherford, Katherine Symes, and their sarcasm-filled-cold-shower-needed story are yet another reason why I love this author's books. It's never boring and with each book in this series, the characters get more witty, emotional, and sexy.

Katherine in Gold is a sweet story about Holst and Katherine fighting each of their battles until the extremely determined Holst convinced Kath that he would love nothing more than to fight her battles with her. By her side. Supporting her. Swoony! Who could say "No" to that offer, especially if it comes in a Hot Holst package? Certainly not our sarcastic, speaks-her-mind, funny Katherine. Katherine is a hilarious character. I think I've highlighted some words of wisdom from her in every page! I was worried about her "past", but the author did well in not giving too many details that would probably make me want to scream and cry but still make the emotions felt. But, amidst their own past dramas, their relationship was a hoot to read, it was funny one minute and then serious the next. They both kept me on my toes and I couldn't have loved reading their banter more than I already have.

I'm ready for the next characters' story! ;)

Stars: 5 stars
Recommended to: Everyone looking for a sweet read with a touch of drama here and there.
Series: Yes. Interconnecting characters.
POV: First person. Dual POV.

WOW is this book sexy.

I must admit that I did not read Bride in Bloom were you first meet Katherin, but I didn’t feel at any time reading this book that you needed to read it.

I love Katherine, she is that type of character that say’s it how it is, no holds barred, she is not afraid to let someone know how she feels about them. Katherine meets Holst but instead of pretending that she doesn’t like him to make him chase her more, she is open and lets him know that she is attracted to him and let’s face it ladies, who wouldn’t be.

It is obvious that Katherine has been hurt in the past and like most people who have been hurt she has built up walls and it a bit sceptical when it comes to letting people get too close and into her heart but the good news is that Holst can see this for himself and instead of running, he wants to help Katherine get past the hurt and to pull down the walls.

This is the first book I have read by this author but I can say that I am truly amazed at how good her writing is and in the way she makes her characters come alive and jump right off the page as if you are actually there watching everything transpire.

I found myself giving a High Five when things were going so well and Katherine was happy but there were times (like in most books) where I felt the pain as well, the angst was just so real you could not help but feel it.

I know what everyone wants to know…… what about the Sex?

Well……………………………….. OMG HOT HOT HOT, I can tell you this, it was warm outside while reading and steamy inside of my home while reading, phew!!!

What about Holst, well he to me is sex on legs, he has everything, he is sexy, he has a heart, he is compassionate and just a man you would give yourself over to time and time again.

One of his phrases (from the bridal shop) sticks out for me to best describe him.
I dare anyone to not melt at these words by Holst.

“For me, my Katherine, it was your heart. The day in the bridal shop, standing that that dress…I discovered treasure…I knew in that moment, I’d found treasure. You were my Katherine in gold.”

A great read in my opinion.

Thank you J.B Hartnett for giving me the chance to read this story.

First and foremost, go back up and rea the warning at the top. Go ahead I will give you a few minutes to scroll back up and read it. Now, if you read it do you see one of the reasons why I had to sign up and read the book? Hello copious swearing! Now by now if you have read my reviews you know me and swear words go hand in hand so after reading that warning did you even have any doubt that I would love Katherine In Gold?

Okay this is going to hopefully be short and sweet and possibly will contain a few swear words in honor of the book. Katherine In Gold is the second book in the Beachy Bride series and can be read as a standalone, although I loved the first book and think you should check it out. Katherine In Gold is one of the best books I have read in a while because not only did it make me laugh, and it did a lot, it also had the perfect amount of issues between Katherine and Holst but those issues didn’t become overdone or annoying. Add to that this is one sexy book and I was in heaven. Katherine is smart assed, sassy and strong, but she has also been through some things that make you want to hold her tight. Holst is just yummy sexy I want a Holst of my own goodness. You will also have a new appreciation for the word “whore”, hell that’s my nickname or well it’s used in a variety of nicknames for me and even I love it more now.

Seriously just go pick up a copy of Katherine In Gold and read it. While I am not also super critical of everything I read it is hard to get a five star rating from me and Katherine In Gold was a five star read for this book whore. I can’t wait to read more from this author because I am already hooked on her writing style.

The love between Katherine and Holst was unbelievably … SEXY!
I loved the character of Katherine, she was introduced in Bride in Bloom (which I also loved). Katherine is a strong woman who tells it like it is. Love that about her.
She meets Holst but acts like she likes him.

You were my Katherine in gold.” I mean… really… swoonworthy.

When I started this book I didn't realize it was a part of a series. I was suspicious because, although the focus was on Katherine, her circle of friends make quite a few appearances and one of them, Tori, was recently married. I suspected she was the focus of another book. The story also sets up stories for the remaining single friends in the group. And they all start with the dress.

Since this is the first in the series I have read, I can into the story not having any connections to the characters, but before the end of the third chapter, I felt like they could have all be my best friends.

Both Katherine and Holst have pasts. Their ghosts can easily keep them from trusting their feelings. Together, they work to support each other in times of need. I just can't put their relationship into words. They just seem to work so well together. I loved this quote from Holst, he sums up relationships in just a couple sentences.

"We will always have ghosts, Katherine. But they don't get to determine our futures unless we let them. I believe your ghost is gone, just not forgotten. But remember I'm beside you in battle now."

Easily given 5 heart-warming stars. There is no cliffhanger ending, but there is a hint as to who the next friend to find love will be. It is written in dual POV, but more of Katherine than Holst. There's just a little bit of drama here and there, but throughout it all, you have no doubt they will be able overcome anything that comes their way. I look forward to reading Ruby (and then Dee's) story.

Funny, sexy and emotional read...

I admit the storyline made me immediately uneasy - a younger woman is not unusual but when I read fourteen and an older man? A big red flag went up. Happily, the author quickly restored my faith as I began reading what turned out to be a funny, emotional, sexy story that I didn't want to end!

Katherine is twenty, bursting with life, energy and a dream to open her own Cafe. Holst comes into her life at exactly the right time to help her make that dream a reality. When love blossoms between the two it seems everything is perfect. But, when in life is ever perfect? Each of them have had relationships go wrong and some things are harder to recover from then others. When Katherine reveals what happened to her it was impossible not to feel her pain and struggle to move on. I love that the story is told from multiple points of view because so much is about not only the words but the feelings behind them. Those glimpses into each of the characters just made them even more relatable and endearing.

Not everything is somber and sadness. The humour and fun had me laughing out loud at times and really feeling the closeness and love that happens when friends become family.

This is the second in a series and I am going to start at the beginning. I love these characters and need more! I hope there will a lot more in this series.

Five overwhelmingly loud stars!
