Рядко някое бананово дърво се извисява над тези върхари, а още по-рядко е група мангови дървета да стърчат сред тресавищата или до обонянието на човек да достигне сладостната миризма на ясмина и магнолията, които се крият плахо тук-там сред невъобразимия хаос на джунглата Денем властвува гробовна тишина, която гнети и най-смелите, но през нощта настъпва неописуема врява от крясъци ръмжене, писъци и вой, които смразяват кръвта.

সুবিশাল উপন্যাসের শেষ গিয়ে যখন দেখা যায় ... শেষ হইয়াও হইল না শেষ, তখন এক ধরণের শূন্যতা এসে ভর করে। গল্পটা সমাপ্ত, কিন্তু অসমাপ্ত। তবে সিরিজের বই যেহেতু, ব্যাপারটা এক অর্থে অযৌক্তিক বলা যায় না।
বইটার অনূদিত হবার খবর পেয়েছি যেদিন থেকে সেদিন থেকে পড়ার ইচ্ছা ছিল। পড়া শুরু করে কিছুটা গ্যাপ পড়েছিল, তারপর দুই সিটিং দিয়ে শেষ করেছি। গল্পের কাহিনী শুরুতে কিছুটা স্লো কিন্তু এক চতুর্থাংশ পড়েই ছুটে চলেছে দূর্বার গতিতে। কাহিনীর পেক্ষাপট খুব বিস্তৃত নয়, প্লটও একমুখী তবুও পড়তে মজা লেগেছে।
গল্পের প্রধান চরিত্র ত্রিমাল-নায়েককে আমার একদম পছন্দ হয়নি। প্রথমত তাকে যে পরিমানে সাহসী পুরুষ বলা হয়েছে তাতে এক নারীকে দেখে তার উপর্যুপরি ছ্যাবলামি ঠিক মেনে নেয়া যায় না। এবং সে পাগলের মত যাচ্ছেতাই করার জন্য বহুবার লাফালাফি করেছে। পক্ষান্তরে তার সাগরেদ কামমামুরি বেশ বিচক্ষন, দক্ষ। যদি কামমা না থাকত, তাহলে ত্রিমাল নায়েক বেচারা যে কি করত বলা মুশকিল। এবং এই গল্প প্রমাণ করে পেশীতে একগাদা জোর থাকলেই চলে না, ঘটে কিছুটা বুদ্ধিও থাকা জরুরি।
ঘটনাক্রমে বিভিন্ন জান্তব মারামারি ভাল লেগেছে, ফাঁসুড়েদের ভয়ংকর বলে মনে হয়েছে, সেই সঙ্গে চালাকও। কিন্তু কিছু জিনিস অজানাই থেকে গেছে। এবং জিনিসগুলো অত্যান্ত ভাইটাল। সেটা খারাপ লেগেছে।
অনুবাদ সম্পর্কে বলতে হয় কাজ বেশ ভাল হয়েছে। কিছু কিছু জটিল শব্দ রয়েছে অবশ্য, কিন্তু তাতে পড়ায় কোনও ব্যাঘাত ঘটে না, অর্থাৎ বাক্যের অর্থ সহজেই পরিষ্কার। কিছু বাক্য কিঞ্চিৎ বড় হতে পারত, কিন্তু সিঙ্গেল শব্দ বাক্য হিসাবে উপস্থাপনে তা প্রয়োজনের অতিরিক্ত ছোট হয়েছে, কিন্তু সেই আগের কথাই বলব, অর্থ পরিষ্কার। সুতরাং ভাল অনুবাদকে ভাল বলতে আমার কোনও আপত্তি নেই।
অগত্যা সিরিজের দ্বিতীয় বইটির জন্য অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা শুরু হলো। সেই বস্তু কবে আসবে কে জানে!

«Siamo inesorabili» incalzò l'indiano.Salgari con la sua penna mi fa volare, ma il personaggio di Tremal-Naik non si avvicina neppure lontanamente né a Sandokan e né, tantomeno, al Corsaro Nero (lode e gloria a lui!). Forse non l'ho tanto sopportato perché in questo romanzo il suo ruolo è quello dell'eroe il cui intelletto -mi vien da pensare, già di per sé esiguo- è totalmente ottenebrato da una folle passione amorosa.
«Ma tu non hai dunque mai amato?» chiese ella, piangendo di rabbia «non sai adunque cosa sia una passione infranta?»
Ora, non per dire, io son contenta per te che sei innamorato e tutto, però un po' di dignità.
Comunque, Salgari è Salgari. Riesce sempre a farsi leggere con piacere e i suoi libri appartengono alla categoria dei non-riesco-a-staccarmene.
Quanto amo i classici d'avventura.

Un classico del romanzo d'avventura, godibilissimo anche ai giorni nostri, a patto di saper ancora dar spazio alla fantasia. Consiglio assolutamente di leggere l'edizione originale e non quella ampliata del 1903.
Nota sui capitoli aggiunti nell'edizione del 1903
Sperando possa essere utile a qualcuno, ecco l'elenco dei capitoli aggiunti all'edizione del 1903. Sono capitoli aggiunti su richiesta dell'editore, che aveva aumentato il formato dei volumi, ma che sono stati scritti da Salgari in maniera frettolosa, senza rileggere il testo originario. Questa aggiunta frettolosa smonta il meccanismo dell'agnizione, anima di tutta la seconda parte del romanzo.
Quindi alla prima lettura non leggete questi capitoli per non rovinarvi la suspense!

Hacía mucho que no leía un libro de aventuras y enseguida me alegré de retomar el género. Empieza fuerte, enganchándote. Pero desde el inexplicable flechazo entre el protagonista, Tremal-Naik, y Ada, quien apenas tiene diez líneas en todo el libro, me resultó un poco más flojo. El odio y el amor, extremadamente pasionales. No obstante cumple con el objetivo de una novela de aventuras así que tampoco debería extrañarme la falta de profundidad de los personajes. Final un poco abrupto.

অনেক আগ্রহ নিয়ে শুরু করেছিলাম। বই যতো এগিয়েছে প্রধান চরিত্রটাকে ততোই তরল আর বিরক্তিকর লাগছিলো। বরং তাঁর সঙ্গীকে অনেক বেশী ম্যাচিউরড লেগেছে। যেটুকু ভালো লেগেছে তা ঐ অনুবাদের মান। কারণ সেবার অনুবাদ নিয়ে তো কোন কথা বলার সুযোগ নাই।

Devo ammettere di aver saltato completamente la lettura dei libri di Salgari durante la mia infanzia. Sicuramente se li avessi letti da piccola li avrei trovati straordinari, gli ingredienti per affascinare un bambino ci sono tutti: avventura, violenza, intrighi e passione. Cosa pretendere di più da un libro di avventure? La storia è coinvolgente e le soluzioni per tenere viva l'attenzione sono davvero fantasiose e, a parte qualche piccola ingenuità nella trama (ma, calcolando che è un libro del 1895, diciamo che ci possono stare), tutto il racconto è un susseguirsi di colpi di scena emozionanti. Un libro da leggere ai piccoli, ma anche a sè stessi, perchè ogni tanto fa bene tornare un pò bambini :)

I will be presenting a cool Italian author. He happens to write incredible adventure stories and to be the most famous Italian writer in this genre. He is the Italian version of Jules Verne (you know, the guy behind Twenty Thousand Leagues under The Sea). He lived between 1862 and 1911 and most of his books were translated in many languages and subsequently adapted on the big screen.
Now, I know what you're thinking. The dude lived in a century so far away, what on Earth could he possibly write that you can't read somewhere else, like written by someone who knows what a microwave is. And whatever the incredible countries on which he wrote, you can google map these countries a-ny-time. Plus in the 18th century, people clearly had issues with hygiene, and that's just eww.
And you would be entirely right.
Except that. Writing about wild foreign and mysterious countries from the point of view of an 18th century Indian hunter in the Black Jungle, hardly compares to anything you have read before. What is interesting is how this book is written and what people thought at this period about those foreign countries. This book is beautifully written and you dream of being part of this adventure, and you discover these exotic (for us) cultures that characterised India in the 1800.
The story is set in India in 1851, in the surroundings of the Black Jungle. Tremal-Naik is a renowned and feared hunter, being one of the few daring to live in the terrifying Black Jungle where tigers, rhinoceros and pythons hide. One of his men is found dead, and with the help of his faithful servant Kammamuri, he sets on a quest in the Black Jungle to find who is responsible for the murder and save the beautiful woman, Ada, he keeps seeing in his dreams. He is fearless and has tamed a tiger that helps him through his quest. Tremal-Naik will have to fight a strange cult that has enslaved his Ada.
The book is divided in two parts, and the second part sees the appearance of new characters and new situations which put Tremal-Naik always further away from his beloved and makes him despair over their future.
This book is the first one of the Pirates of Malaysia Series (11 books).

Style
The style of writing is very similar to other adventure books of the same period like The Three Musketeers where the dialogues and general reactions are quite over the top, some people are always overcome by emotion, talk or whisper what they think out loud and finally where others interject each other with "scoundrel" and "wrench" every 5 pages. I find it highly amusing and entertaining.
I would qualify this book as a page turner. The plot is full of exciting events which are very well described and which take place in a very fast-paced rhythm that makes you want to know immediately what will happen next.
About that, it is not a good idea to read this book in public, you get so excited from the story that you want to brandish your sword with a barbarian scream and go defend the poor and hopeless from the ruthless evil hands of mean people.
Yeah very bad idea at 8am in the tube, I can guarantee...
One of the best things of this book is the description of Indian and Hindu traditions. It feels as much an adventure story as a book on India in the 1800 during the British colonisation. It's very interesting.
As a lot of books written in this period, the characters have very definite personalities and roles in the story. I don't want to spoil the plot too much, but each character has a very interesting role to play, and since the story is told from a third person point of view, you get glimpses of everybody and it really is a plus.

Nostalgic re-read of a childhood favourite. Sadly, some books, like this one, have a perfect age and time after which they lose their magic.

জঙ্গল ছিল, জঙ্গলের মাঝে দ্বীপ ছিল, অথবা দ্বীপের মাঝে জঙ্গল ছিল, জঙ্গলদ্বীপে অরণ্যচারী প্রাণী ছিল, ভয়ঙ্কর শত্রু ছিল, রহস্য ছিল, রহস্যময়ী এক রুপবতীও ছিল এবং... এবং একখানা 'নায়ক'ও ছিল। নায়কের নামও নায়ক, 'ত্রিমাল নায়েক', ব্যাক-কাভারের লেখা অনুযায়ী নায়ক 'অসমসাহসী'ও ছিল। তা, সাহস যে একেবারে ছিল না, তা বলা যাবে না, সাহস ছিল। সাহস থাকলেও ত্রিমাল নায়েকের যা যা ছিল না, তা হচ্ছে, 'ব্যক্তিত্ব' 'কমন সেন্স' এবং 'ঘটে বুদ্ধি'। রুক্ষভাবে বললে ত্রিমাল নায়েককে বলা যেতে পারে মাকাল নায়েক।
সে অসমসাহসী, সুন্দরবনের বাঘ তার পোষ মেনে কোলে উঠে বসে থাকে, অথচও সেই একই লোক রাতের আঁধারে গোপনে মন্দিরের দিকে যাওয়ার সময় জঙ্গলের মাঝে অজগর সাপ দেখে 'অজগর! অজগর!' বলে চেঁচিয়ে ওঠে! সিরিয়াসলি!?
বিশ্বস্ত সঙ্গী হুরতি'র মৃত্যুর খবর ছাপিয়ে তার কাছে গুরুত্বপূর্ন হয়ে ওঠে রহস্যময়ী প্রেমিকার খবর, কারণে অকারনে ধমকাধ্মকি করে বিশ্বস্ত অনুচর কামমামুরিকে , অথচ ক্ষেত্র বিশেষে কামমামুরি'র কমনসেন্স এবং ঘটে বুদ্ধি - দুটোই তার চেয়ে বেশি বলে মনে হয়েছে । আর নায়িকার প্রতি নায়েকের আবেগের যে বহিঃপ্রকাশ, সেটা অনেক সময় 'ছ্যাবলামি'র পর্যায়ে চলে গেছে।
গল্পের প্লটটা দুর্দান্ত ছিল। আর এমন শক্তিশালী প্লট বলেই হয়তো নায়কের চরিত্রের দুর্বলতাগুলো আরও বেশি করে চোখে পড়েছে।
তারপরও বাংলায় বইটা উতরে গেছে প্লট, পার্শ্বচরিত্র এবং অনুবাদের গুনে। বেশ ভাল কাজ হয়েছে। অনুবাদক ডিউক জনের আগের কাজগুলোতে অতিরিক্ত ছোট ছোট বাক্যের ব্যবহার এবং তুলনামূলক কম প্রচলিত শব্দের ব্যবহার দেখা যেত। বিষয়টা যে খারাপ, তা না, বরং বিষয়টা অনুবাদকের একটা স্বকীয়তা বলা যেতে পারে, অনুবাদকের একটা আইডেন্টিটি তৈরি করে। তবে এই বইতে সেই ধারা থেকে অনেকটাই বেরিয়ে এসেছেন তিনি, যার ফলে, আমার কাছে মনে হয়েছে, অনুবাদ আগের চেয়ে প্রাঞ্জল হয়েছে।
আপাতত পরের বইয়ের অপেক্ষায়, এখনও অনেক প্রশ্নের উত্তর পাওয়া বাকি! :)
সে অসমসাহসী, সুন্দরবনের বাঘ তার পোষ মেনে কোলে উঠে বসে থাকে, অথচও সেই একই লোক রাতের আঁধারে গোপনে মন্দিরের দিকে যাওয়ার সময় জঙ্গলের মাঝে অজগর সাপ দেখে 'অজগর! অজগর!' বলে চেঁচিয়ে ওঠে! সিরিয়াসলি!?

প্রেমের কচকচানি বেশি... নাটকীয় ছিঁচকাঁদুনে ন্যাকামি ভরা প্রেম মনে হল... এর বাদে বইটা অ্যাডভেঞ্চার হিসেবে জোস... রাজমঙ্গল তার রহস্যময়টা ঠিকমতো ধরে রেখেছিলো। অ্যাডা করিশান্তের আসল পরিচয় আশা করি পরের পর্বে পেয়ে যাব। সেই সাথে নায়ক আর তার প্রেম তাদের কে কোথায় নিয়ে দাড় করায় দেখা দরকার। কাম্মামুরি কে খুব ভাল লাগছে সেই সাথে দরমা কেও। একটা বাঘ পোষার ইচ্ছা হচ্ছে :P

El libro que comenzó todo. Hasta que cayó en mis manos (tenía 11 años) no podría decirse que era un lector, pero me atrapó y luego nunca mas dejé de leer. No se si será el mejor libro de Salgari, pero detonó en mi el placer por leer.
Le debo mucho a este libro, gracias a él he vivido mil vidas y viajado a muchos universos.

মাঝে এসে এক প্রেম ভালুবাসায় নায়েক যা যা করল!!! শুরুটা ভালো লেগেছিল, শেষটাও খারাপ না। ব্যটা নায়েকের উপর মাঝে একবার মেজাজ খারাপ হয়ে গেছিল শুধু।

Seconda rilettura per il gdl #bimbidisalgari e forse sarà un’opinione impopolare, ma Tremal Naik mi piace più di Sandokan. Ha infatti meno fascino della Tigre della Malesia, ma più buonsenso: mentre Sandokan è il tipo che spara prima e si pone problemi poi (se se li pone), Tremal Naik è un giovanotto coi piedi per terra.
Inoltre non c’è insta-love, lui e Ada ci mettono ben QUINDICI GIORNI di sospiri e languide occhiate per innamorarsi 😂
Poi certo, Ada non è Marianna, e Kammamuri non è Yanez, ma quello che questo romanzo perde in personaggi lo guadagna sul lato della trama: nella prima parte si addentra nella jungla del titolo, un ambiente infido in cui si nascondono tigri e uomini altrettanto pericolosi; la seconda parte è una corsa contro il tempo all’insegna del miscommunication trope. Diventa quasi un thriller e la tensione mi ha tenuta incollata alle pagine — mentre nella prima parte c’è qualche ingenuità di troppo da parte di Tremal Naik e i suoi uomini.
Poi c’è un sottotesto che da bambina non avevo colto, ovvero la trattazione dell’India sotto il colonialismo inglese, che diventa evidente soprattutto nei capitoli aggiunti all’edizione del 1903.
Nella prima parte infatti conosciamo i Thugs come estremisti sanguinari, fanatici devoti alla dea Kalì che strangolano malcapitati e sacrificano vergini sul rogo: degli antagonisti monodimensionali, insomma.
Nella seconda parte invece l’azione si sposta a Calcutta, Tremal Naik si trova costretto a collaborare con i Thugs e la faccenda diventa molto più complessa. Da un lato ci sono i sipai, gli indiani entrati a far parte dell’esercito inglese, incarnati nella figura del fedele e coraggioso Bharata: uomini un po’ a metà tra la cultura di origine che non osano offendere e quella d’adozione che li pone in contrasto con il loro stesso popolo. Dall’altro lato i Thugs, seppure fanatici, hanno il supporto della popolazione e dei sacerdoti perché affermano di lottare contro gli invasori in nome dell’India libera.
Salgari non si addentra nella questione, che rischiava di diventare spinosa in un romanzo d’avventura in cui c’era bisogno di una netta distinzione tra buoni e cattivi; ma anche in questa dicotomia trovano spazio varie sfaccettature che offrono spunti di riflessione a chi vuole dargli una chiave di lettura in più.

Publicada también en castellano como “Los misterios de la India” es una novela que aún formando parte de la saga de "Sandokan" es totalmente independiente, ya que transcurre en su totalidad en la India y los protagonistas son los hindúes Tremal-Naik y Kammamuri. Es decir que si quieres completar el ciclo de Sandokan puedes meterte con ella, ya que los personajes aparecerán más adelante, pero si te la saltas, no ocurrirá gran cosa.
El argumento de la novela versa sobre la secta de los thugs, los famosos estranguladores -aquí no tanto- seguidores de la diosa Kali, y aunque es un asunto muy interesante esa India colonial británica es verdad que no se consigue del todo sacar provecho al tema, más que nada por la forma de escribir de Salgari con larguísimas secuencias de acción como es el caso de la que abarca prácticamente toda la primera mitad del libro.
Buena ambientación, y sobre todo un libro bastante erudito -bastante bien en cuestiones geográficas y menos buenas en el retrato de los thugs- que los aficionados y estudiosos de la India no pueden pasar de largo.
El protagonista Tremal-Naik es un antihéroe, capaz de matar y actuar de forma irracional por amor, llevándose por delante a todo lo que se interponga en su camino. Por cierto parece ser que el propio Spielberg se inspiró en el malvado jefe thug del libro de Salgari para el personaje del perverso indio Mola Ram de “Indiana Jones y el templo Maldito”.
Lo que puede llamar más la atención hoy es como los protagonistas utilizan técnicas de tortura para conseguir una información sin plantearse cuestiones éticas, no se quiere moralizar a los protagonistas. Lo peor es sin duda el final que no va en sintonía con la actitud de Tremal-Naik a lo largo del libro.
Aún así, una recomendable novela más del genio veronés de Salgari que hay que reivindicar.

একশন এডভেঞ্চার। গল্পের নায়ক ত্রিমাল নায়েক এক অসীম সাহসী শিকারী। শুরুতে এই ভদ্রলোকের পারদর্শীতার অতিরঞ্জিত বর্ণনায় বিরক্ত হয়ে বই নামিয়ে রাখতাম। পড়তে ইচ্ছা করত না আর। কিন্তু মাঝেমাঝেই আবার ফে��ে রাখা বইটার কথা মনে পড়ত। তারপর আডার কি হল? ত্রিমাল নায়েককে যে প্রায় মেরে ফেলল? কামমামুরি কি বাঁচাতে পারল?
এই গল্পের জন্য নির্ধারিত জায়গাটা সুন্দরবন। সুন্দরবনের এক দ্বীপে মানুষে-অজগরে-বাঘে-গন্ডারে একেবারে পুরোদস্তুর একশন... এডভেঞ্চার...

সেবা'র রোমাঞ্চকর এডভেঞ্চার সিরিজের ভালো সংযুক্তি। তবে এমিলিও সালগ্যারি আমার কাছে শুধু এই ডার্ক জাংগলের আরেক নাম না হোক। তার আরো যে সমস্ত ভালো লেখা আছে দ্রুততম সময়ে তারাও আমার এই তালিকার অন্তর্ভুক্ত হোক।

Este es el primer libro que leí en mi pre adolescencia. ¡No creo que exista algo mejor para esa edad! Lo leí de casualidad, lo tenía hacía un tiempo junto a otros que me habían regalado y no había tocado. Formaba parte de una serie de libros (Ya saben, aburridos y sin dibujitos) y entre todas mis revistas del Pato Donald, Don Miki, Astérix o Tío Rico cayó por accidente este libro abierto. Leí unas hojas y ¡Pum!... fue como jugar a Jumanji. Estaba metido en un mundo de aventuras más grande que mi vida.
Aún hoy me fascina cómo despertó mi imaginación con sus descripciones.
Me da pena cómo Salgari o cualquier escritor de la misma estirpe están siendo desplazado por Fortnite.

When I was a child, I was a fan of Sandokan, both the cartoons and the TV mini series starring Kabir Bedi. I am also a fan of classic adventure novels, as cheesy as they are. It was only a matter of time to get my hands on The Mystery of the Black Jungle, the first book on The Pirates of Malaysia series, which deals with Sandokan and his crew.
Well, I finally did, and I didn't love it.
I actually have mixed feelings about this one. Even for a classic adventure, the characters are rather flat and every little mystery that conforms the plot is really very illogical. Tremal-Naik, the hero, is too impetuous and empty-headed to be a proper main character - he is not a good adventure leader. Kammamuri, his servant, is a far more interesting and intelligent character. Unfortunately, he only appears in the first half of the novel. But honestly, at some point Tremal-Naik faces an horde of enemies armed with some sort of gun and his knives. And what does he do? Discard the knives, discharge his gun in a lake, and start hitting thugs with the gun butt. Not the best plan there, pal. As readers, we are supposed to ascribe his lack of brains to his sudden infatuation with Ada (who, according to classic adventure novel standards is the only female in the whole book, nothing more than a love interest/object). The same flat characterization can be found in Suyodhana, the main antagonist. But it all just comes across as comical, when it should induce tension. On top of that, the (rather ludicrous) central conflict wouldn't exist if one of the characters hadn't randomly decided to change his name. The rushed ending, anagnorisis included, spans only about a page and a half.
Fortunately, although The Mystery of the Black Jungle has very many problems, it isn't devoid of virtues. For one thing, the representation of POC is by far the best I've encountered in a novel of this time and age. They are varied. It's amazing how something so simple can feel so refreshing. They aren't all Indians and that's it - Salgari respectfully describes changes in skin tone, facial hair, eye shape and colour, and how these features were usually associated with people from different geographical areas. At some point, Tremal-Naik even uses the racial prejudices of a white man as an advantage to carry out a risky plan, and it pays out. These descriptions don't feel out of place, since Salgari was describing what was considered an exotic place to Europeans who hadn't travelled all that much. He also makes a point about the peaceful coexistence of different religions, and shows customs from an 'inside' point of view, trying to make a Western reader understand that something which can seem barbaric or ridiculous to us is just a religious or superstitious custom as good (or bad!) as those present in Europe. He sometimes slips unrespectful comments or expresses disgust at some traditions, but Salgari was definitely quite open-minded for a 19th-century Italian man. And he doesn't stop there. He makes his characters very vocal about British colonialism - how they were destroying traditions and standardizing everyone to fit in their mold of savages in order to rule more easily over India.
At the end of the novel, I was thankful for the purposeful ambiguous ending and for its political stance, but it definitely wasn't a very entertaining read.

এমন কাব্যিক অনুবাদ/ অ্যাডাপ্টেশন কখনো পড়ি নাই, বলতেই হবে। আমার কেন জানি মনে হচ্ছে নিতান্ত নীরস লেখাকে অনুবাদক তার লেখনী দিয়ে জাতে তুলে নিয়ে এসেছেন। ঠগী আর সুন্দরবন - এই দুই নিয়ে আগ্রহ থাকার কারণেই বই হাতে নেয়া - তবে কোনটারই তেমন ভূমিকা না থাকায় নিতান্ত নিরাশ আমি। ঠগীর আড়ালে, সুন্দরবনের ঝোপে এ বই এক নিরেট প্রেমকাহিনী। তেমন কোন মিস্ট্রিও নেই, প্রেডিক্টেবল এই প্রেম কাহিনী আপনি আমি হাজার বার দেখেছি, পড়েছি, শুনেছি। লাইনে লাইনে নায়কের বুকভরা হাহাকার আর নায়িকার বিপদে চিৎকার কি আমাদের অপরিচিত কিছু?
কিনে যেহেতু ফেলেছি, পরের বইটাও পড়া হবে। জানা থাকলে হয়তো কাব্যিক প্রেমকাহিনী পড়তাম না। সেসবে আমার বড্ড বদহজম হয়।

I liked this book a lot when I read it the first time as a child. I just finished reading it again and I still like it. It is meant for young kids, so reading it when you're adult it will probabily not leave you with a good impression. The story is well written, full of action scenes set in the wild and misterious jungle, there is a heroic warrior, merciless enemies, a cruel godess that demands blood sacrifices.. everything is there. It is an old fashioned stories, so today's technology is absent, and the characters may speak and act weird to our modern taste but this is not necessarily a negative aspect if you're into this retro-style.

Questo secondo libro del ciclo "I pirati della malesia" è quanto di meglio ci si possa aspettare da un libro di avventure: azioni mozzafiato, continui ed imprevedibili colpi di scena, tensione che non si allenta mai, condito poi dall'ambientazione esotica della giungla indiana, delle pagode, dei fachiri, dei malvagi Thug, dell'incredibile fiume Gange, con i suoi traffici commerciali e i riti religiosi degli indiani!
Un ritorno al passato, quando, da adolescente, divoravo questo genere di libri: penso che prima o poi leggerò anche il primo volume (anche se sicuramente letto da ragazzo).

Sette indiane, avventurieri, luoghi esotici, amori impossibili. È incredibile come Salgari riesca a descrivere i paesaggi indiani senza aver mai lasciato l’Italia.
Un po’ di delusione per l’assenza di Sandokan da questo romanzo e i personaggi sono abbastanza stereotipati (i buoni sono buoni, i malvagi hanno soltanto cattive intenzioni), ma è una lettura piacevole e perfetta per evadere dalla realtà e sognare le notti nella giungla.

Amori di gioventù. L'edizione su cui sono cresciuta era un tascabile appartenuto a mio padre non so bene edito da chi. Per mancanza di spazio mia madre li portò alla biblioteca scolastica , con mio grande dolore, assieme a tutti i libri su cui mi ero formata.... Da grande ho ricomprato l'edizione economica. Forse libri non di pregio ma "formativi" per la mia infanzia.

Quando ero bambino era uno dei miei libri preferiti. Rileggendolo l'ho trovato noioso, ripetitivo e scontato. Per non parlare della stupidità dei personaggi che a volta rasenta il ritardo mentale.

Che misteri cela una giungla popolata da indigeni sanguinari, il cui unico scopo nella vita sembrerebbe strangolare malcapitati, da offrire poi come tributo alla loro dea?
Fra i temi trattati da quest’opera vi è indubbiamente l’amore, che spinge il protagonista, Tremal-Naik, un rinomato cacciatore di serpenti, a sopravvivere a mille peripezie per strappare la sua amata, Ada, dalle grinfie degli strangolatori, ma anche una sana dose di fratellanza, dato che, sempre il protagonista, non abbandona facilmente i suoi compagni, e soprattutto ne rimpiange fortemente la morte (la quale piomberà su tutti i suoi compari, salvo che sul fedele Kammamuri, che sopravviverà fino alla fine).
La storia inizia con Tremal-Naik, e due dei suoi compagni, che scoprono della morte del loro altro compare, rimanendo sorpresi dal fatto che il corpo del deceduto non riporta alcuna ferita, se non dei segni di strangolamento sul collo, dunque si avventurano per una giungla non molto lontana dal luogo del delitto, e vi trovano una pagoda, nella quale scorgono molteplici uomini, tatuati sul petto con teste di serpenti, e muniti di robusti lacci, mentre pregano ad una strana statua, rappresentante quella che poi si scopre essere la loro dea. Tremal-Naik vendica il suo compagno uccidendo il loro saggio, e dopodiché fugge nella foresta, ingannando temporaneamente i suoi inseguitori, e raggiungendo così Ada, una donna della quale presto si innamora, ma viene poi setacciato dal capo degli strangolatori, e costretto a battere in ritirata. Verrà eventualmente catturato, durante uno dei suoi tentativi di soccorrimento, e forzato a divenire parte del loro gruppo, con la missione di uccidere un ufficiale della marina inglese intento a ripulire i mari dalla presenza degli strangolatori e del loro strano culto. Inizialmente Tremal-Naik obbedirà agli ordini a lui dati, poiché la sua amata, nonché il suo fedele Kammamuri, sono stati presi come ostaggi, ma dopo aver scoperto la vera identità dell’uomo che deve ammazzare, ovvero dopo essere venuto a conoscenza del fatto che questi infatti sarebbe in realtà il padre di Ada, passerà dalla sua parte, ed insieme salveranno sua figlia, ma senza tuttavia eliminare il capo degli strangolatori, il quale riuscirà infatti a fuggire, minacciando i due del suo inevitabile ritorno.
Tra i momenti che ho apprezzato di più, vi sono pressappoco tutti quelli dove gioca un ruolo attivo la tigre di Tremal-Naik, la possente Darma, la cui efficienza negli eseguire gli ordini a lei impartiti sottolinea un incredibile grado di affinità verso il suo padrone, nonché una spiccata intelligenza, che salverà più volte la pelle a quest’ultimo. In aggiunta, vi è tutta la sequenza che si svolge nei sotterranei di Calcutta, in particolar modo per la sua ingegnosità nel piazzare i meccanismi di sollevamento e abbassamento del livello dell’acqua, che diventeranno delle vere e proprio trappole.
Le azioni di Tremal-Naik talvolta non hanno proprio molto senso, nonostante a tratti si mostri dotato di un’eccellente astuzia, specie quando in certi casi decide di scontrarsi apertamente con gli strangolatori, al posto di impiegare approcci più tattici, di cui è assolutamente capace. In più, il fatto che, una volta preso prigioniero, non sia stato immediatamente accoppato, mi è parso parecchio strano, dato che la sua missione poteva essere compiuta da un qualsivoglia altro strangolatore, e, prima della sua cattura, si era già macchiato del sangue di un numero non negligible di strangolatori.
Questo libro sarebbe il primo “sequel” de “Le tigri di Mompracem”, a sua volta scritto da Emilio Salgari, anche se né Sandokan, né nessuno dei suoi tigrotti, appaiono nel corso della storia, e non vi sono neppure dei riferimenti creativi alle loro avventure nel romanzo precedente, il che mi ha fatto rimanere leggermente deluso. Detto ciò, l’ho trovato più interessante rispetto al suo predecessore, dato che le sequenze descrittive sono più ricche e dettagliate, sia per quanto concerne la cultura, che per la fauna e vegetazione, dei luoghi proposti.

Questo è il primo romanzo del ciclo I Pirati della Malesia e per mia fortuna contava solo 311 pagine per cui la lettura è stata abbastanza veloce nonostante certi passaggi.
Lo stile dell'autore è sicuramente scorrevole se non fosse per una ripetitività nelle situazioni (un thugs si finge amico del protagonista per ucciderlo e la stessa cosa farà il protagonista per combattere un nemico dei Thugs).
Interessanti e d'effetto sono le descrizioni dettagliate dell'India e dei suoi usi e costumi considerato che l'autore non c'era mai stato peccato che ha dovuto far ricorso alle enciclopedie perché veniva pagato una miseria.
E' un romanzo avventuroso ma privo di pirati come forse mi aspettavo dato il ciclo a cui appartiene.
Il linguaggio utilizzato è in linea con il periodo in cui è stato scritto il romanzo (1895) per cui sorrido divertita trovandomi davanti a termini non più utilizzati. Stessa cosa vale per le vicende amorose tra il protagonista e Ada raccontate come storie d'altri tempi (basta un gioco di sguardi per 10 giorni e si sono perdutamente innamorati tanto da essere disposti a tutto per amore).
Anche se l'amore tra i due è solamente un optional considerato che è l'avventura e l'amicizia a farla da padrone.
La caratterizzazione dei personaggi non mi ha soddisfatto per niente a cominciare dal protagonista coraggioso ma privo di buon senso (a volte si trasforma in un invasato) soprattutto se pensa alla donna che ama, Ada una bella ragazza che fa brevissime apparizioni invece Kammamuri mi è sembrato il grillo parlante della situazione. Privi di spessore a mio avviso.
In conclusione, posso dire con assoluta certezza che Salgari non fa per me.
