Thomas Carver lives the dream, with one foot in the midwest and one on the west coast. He's been seen at the opera and at the biker bar, a cocktail party and the alley behind the dumpsters. He's worked in the hot sun and the air-conditioned office, and knows all the gradations of pleasure between caviar on his tongue and sand between his teeth.

I almost didn’t rate this because I wasn’t sure what to say. This was the first book by Thomas Carver I didn’t love. Being from Chicago it was fun to read about all the places I know. However, I just couldn’t connect with the main character. This obsession with Craze didn’t work for me. I read the first page of Fall and just didn’t want to read anymore. Maybe I can try it again latter.

Well, this was a pleasant surprise! I'm always a little hesitant about reading one of Thomas Carver's books. He writes really well, actually, but sometimes the taste level of the content leaves a lot to be desired...for me, anyway. Golden showers, spitting in mouths and hard-core humiliation have all appeared in sex scenes in a couple of his books that I've read previously. As crazy as it seems, this did not turn me on!

This book, however, was really good. We follow Brandon into the streets of Chicago where we get a gripping and energetic peek into the gritty life of a rentboy living on the streets. Brandon is not your typical homeless man. He is highly educated, drug free and somehow manages to retain his self-respect under conditions which would have sent many into a downward spiral into despair and self-loathing.

He fell into life on the streets on his eighteenth birthday, when is father unceremoniously tossed him out of the house for being gay. It was brutal and harsh, but perfectly legal now that Brandon was an adult in the eyes of the law. Another interesting thing about Brandon was that despite his current homeless state, he actually had a bright future ahead of him. Come fall, he had a full-ride scholarship to a university, room and board included. He just had to survive the summer on the streets of Chicago first...
