College graduation is only the beginning for Ariel as she lands her dream job working for a record label in The Big Apple. Not only is it the beginning of her professional career, but also the beginning of an unexpected romance with Jamison, a self-assured recent grad who is also getting his foot in the door of the music industry at a competing record label. The collision of business and pleasure is inevitable but when Ariel receives a personal assignment to help take down her label’s top competition, she’s forced to make a decision; her career or her newfound love? Just how far will she have to go to get the edge?
Alexandra Warren is a contemporary romance author with over thirty works to date, all of which intentionally center Black love. She is also the co-founder of Girl, Have You Read…, a digital platform dedicated to Black romance written by Black authors.
When she’s not in front of her computer, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family, watching sports, and clearing her DVR. Alexandra is a proud native of Omaha, Nebraska, but she currently calls Houston, Texas home.
I’m obviously late to the Alexandra Warren party and trying to play catch up on her catalog. “ Getting the Edge” was a good, quick read. Ariel and Jamison were both great characters. There were times that I wanted to hop into the book and shake Ariel for some of the decisions that she made. I would have loved just a little more chemistry between the two. The plot itself was very realistic. Alexandra Warren is quickly becoming one of my favorite romance authors and I cannot wait to read more from her in the future.
Getting The Edge barely made the just okay list. This book was not up to par for Alexandra Warren. With all of the grammatical errors, misused phrases, and incorrect double spacing, this book read like it was written by a novice author. The heroine was audaciously stupid. This book was written well after the Me Too movement so, I just didn't understand some of the decision making this character made. Ariel is a newly college graduate who moves to NYC to work in the music industry. While in NY, she runs into Jamison, who she had a one night stand with the night before graduation. As luck would have it, he too has moved to NYC to pursue a career in the music industry. They both interview at J&J Records but, Ariel gets the job. Bad decision number one is, Ariel takes this job knowing this company was previously sued for sexual harassment. What female would willingly work for a company that has a history of sexual harassment?!!! One of her bosses immediately starts to harass Ariel on her first day of work. Shocker! Jamison finds a job at a competing record label. When Ariel's grimey azz bosses find out she's dating him, they force her to get intel from Jamison and report back to them. This would be bad decision number two. Now, here's what I don't understand. If you and your girlfriend are working for competing record labels, why on earth are you telling her the moves you're making with your artists?!!! That would've never happened in real life. But, I digress. Instead of just recording her bosses demanding her to, basically, become a spy, Ariel agrees to this foolishness therein putting her relationship to Jamison at risk. Whew chile! The stupidity was real with this character. Ariel just could not seem to think her way out of a brown paper bag. But, this is why I don't like reading about characters in the early 20's. I can't relate to that kind of stupidity. Ariel was vey naïve in thinking she could deal a situation that was much larger than she could really handle. Getting The Edge was a huge disappointment. It will definitely go down as my least favorite book by Alexandra Warren.
Unique story line, not so great decision making skills.
I was super excited to read this story because the plot was different from the typical AAR novel, that we see done over and over, but I was a little disappointed in some of the choices our main characters made. Ariel had such a good head on her shoulders and appeared to be smart about making life choices with her double - double majors and less risky personal life style, but she threw all that out the window when she decided to do grimy stuff for her equally grimy bosses. I think I would have understood if she had a reason for taking the backstabbing deal ( hurting for money, they threatened to hurt her, they threatened to hurt Jamieson) but she really had no reason to do what she did, aside from them "threatening her job" which are a dime a dozen if she was a experienced as she says she is. She could have easily left and found another and that would have been that, but she took the deal which in turn puts her character/morals into question. I honestly don't understand how Jamieson would trust/forgive her after that if thats all it took for her to do some shady sh**. So maybe if the stakes were a little higher I could root for her after it all went down but her reasoning wasn't enough for her to remain the good character in the end, even with the assault. She did her dirty deeds long before she was pressed so that didn't factor into her decision making to be a mole. She was also a little to accepting of her best friends ways. We've seen the "hoeish bestie" role done a million times and I get it, if your single you should live you best life, but her friend was doing it to get ahead and that is just as bad as what she waz doing so it makes sense that she kept turning a blind eye to her ways. I also didn't care for Jamieson's dirty tasks with "passed around" Erin. Makes him just another basic dude with low standards, hurt or not. I guess I prefer to hold my fictional characters at a higher standard because you can't expect that in the real world so it would be nice to aleast read about it in the fantasy world. They way these characters behaved were just like the people I see on a regular so I wasn't to into their antics by the end of the story. Aside from both characters needing to grow up, the plot and execution was great. Those few factors made me like them less by the end of the story and I wish there was justice for the ones that came before Ariel (his ass desevered jail if she was far from the first and apparently not the last) but I'm glad it atleast worked out for her in the end. I guess it all worked out like it would in normal life.
Reading Ms. Warren’s Tale of Two Cities Halloween installment brought me to Jamison & Ariel’s story. Graduating from college and moving to a big city is exciting enough but tossing in a beautiful man who you’d thought you’d never see again is certainly a recipe for a page turner. This love story was complicated by two up and coming execs trying to establish themselves in a cutthroat business. I could not believe that Ariel crossed over to the shady side, but I’m glad Jamison didn’t let her off easily. Also, Jamison’s side kick, Dawson, kept me laughing—I kept imagining Jacob from Abbott Elementary LOL
What a breathtaking read from beginning to end. I truly loved me some Ariel and Jamison together. I really wish J&J didn’t get off the hooks so easily with a settlement especially since the behavior had been going on so long but silenced and never brought to the home front. I wish Ariel was upfront with Jamison about the blackmail it caused an unnecessary rift in their relationship. Definitely can’t wait to read more.
This was a great short read. Ms. Warren definitely knows how to tell a short story. For it to be a novella, I feel like she told a complete story. I didn't have a bunch of unanswered questions in the end. I do wish ot was longer because I didn't want it to end. Her style of writing is great and speaks to the type of author she is.
In the midst of a fun romance, some serious drama surfaced. It made for an interesting storyline. I was happy with the way things worked out in the end. Jamison seemed like a great catch. He was the best part of the book for me. I’ve read other books with Zalayah’a character. It was interesting to see where her story began.
Reading Alexandra Warren is always a delight and I was not disappointed. Her characters always make you feel like they are family and have you rooting for them until the end.
Enjoyed Jamison and Ariel's story. However, I was disappointed in how naiive Ariel was when it came to her bosses. She was so confident when she got the job, and just punked out when it was time to boss up! Nonetheless, I'm glad they got their HEA.
This book was like a good roller coaster. Slow start but once the momentum builds you can’t stop screaming and you can’t stop turning the pages until the end. I must said it ended much better than it started.
I love Alexandra’s writing style. From the first page she hooks you into her novels. I started reading this morning and was determined to find out what happened between Jamison and Ariel.
Ariel & Jamison hook up in a way that makes you think …aaaw nothing special. But then thing blossom sort of then not really. The steps it took get them going were all too real. I like this romance.
I wish I had read this book first, but anywho it was a great read and things like that happens all the time in the music industry. It was a great book!
This book was dropped before I had heard of this author, so I am catching on allllll books written by her. Her style is awesomesauce and I love how relatable the characters re she creates.
I enjoyed this plot and felt it was a good angle in terms of a storyline for a Y.A novella. The characters were realistic and the plot was quite plausible in today's fast pace business world. The conflict/resolution aspect of this read was well written and added a good touch of drama to the mix. My only issue, which is huge for me was the pacing of the character's relationship: I felt something was missing and literally flipped back to see if I skipped some pages to see if it was detailed. I didn't feel the chemistry, heat..nothing to explain how they developed feelings sooo fast. The love element in Ariel and Jamison's relationship happened instantly and while that is possible in life, I didn't feel it in the words.
