'The Haunted Tower' is part of the collection of Usborne Puzzle Adventures. I used to read these when I was younger, but since working at the library some years ago and realising they stocked several of these titles, I discovered that I can still enjoy the puzzles and silly little stories. I do struggle with some of the titles for younger readers as they are just too easy.
This book in particular tells the story of Nic and Ali who are visiting their cousin Charlie in the seaside town of Port Snoreham. They hear of a mysterious island called Spectre’s Isle which is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a pirate called Captain Swashbuckle. Legend tells that he died just off the shore of the island when his ship crashed, and he took all his treasure to the sea bed with him – however no treasure has ever been found. The kids decide to have an adventure and hop over to the spooky island to see what they can find.
The puzzles in this book weren’t too easy but gave me enough challenge to use my brain a bit. It wasn’t condescending, and I enjoyed the story/mystery. To think it was written the same year I was born, I think it has aged well enough!
Borrowed from a co-worker, had this laying around in the office. Started reading out of curiosity but end up getting hooked. Strangely, I got mad when people disturb me while I was solving the puzzles, even though I read this in office lol
