Beautiful, BEAUTIFUL book of simple, homey, gracious and exalted poems. Edna Jaques is a Saskatchewan poet, which made me quite excited. And while her poems aren't like... "literary" masterpieces, they are VERY good, and I'm surprised she is so obscure.
There is something steady and sure in Edna Jaques poems: she is centred in herself and her faith, and that doesn't mean she doesn't express grief or doubt or fear in her poems, but rather that she comes out the other end of those experiences or emotions with more dignity and graciousness.
She writes often of little, simple things, like sunlight on the front porch, or curtains, or simple meals - she focuses in on daily life, but one of the most prominent themes (reminds me of Tolkien) is that the simple life meaningful and builds eternity, just as great wars do.
Actually, here is a good line from my favourite poem from the book, titled Encouragement: Oh, may we know that even common days Are shod with glory... tipped with points of light That little homes like ours and simple ways Are precious in God's sight.
That tension between Saskatchewan soil and the sensory realness of wooden floors, and then this eternal sort of glory and light is really beautiful.
I'm blessed to have an original copy of this book, signed by the author. The poems are beautifully written, the cadence keeps you wanting more. A lovely afternoon read.
This is my Great Grandfather's niece & I am blessed to have a family copy passed down to me. It would be awesome if it were a signed copy but sadly not.
