About the author

Pannalal Patel was born on 7 May 1912 in Mandli village (now in Dungarpur, Rajasthan) to Nanasha aka Nanalal and Hiraba, an Anjana Chaudhari family. He is youngest among his four siblings. His father was a farmer and used to recite Ramayana, Okhaharan and other mythological stories for his village. This earned his house a nickname "abode of learning". His father died during his childhood and his mother Hiraba raised the children.

His education progressed with many difficulty due to poverty. He could study up to the only fourth standard at Sir Pratap High School, Idar. During school days, he befriended his schoolmate Umashankar Joshi. For a brief period, he worked as a manager in a liquor manufacturing company in Dungarpur. He wrote his first novel while working as a domestic help in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

In 1936, he accidentally met his old friend Umashankar Joshi who persuaded him to write. He wrote his first short story Sheth Ni Sharda (1936). Later, his stories published in many Gujarati magazines. In 1940, he received recognition for his first novel Valamana (The Send-off), followed by Malela Jeev (1941), Manvini Bhavai (1947) and many other novels. In 1971, he started a publishing company Sadhana in Ahmedabad along with his two sons. During the later years, he mostly wrote novels based on Hindu mythology and epics.

He died on 6 April 1989 in Ahmedabad following brain hemorrhage.

મળેલા જીવ..!!! શું અદભુત વાર્તા..!! કાનજીનો પ્રેમ અને તેની મજબુરીઓ, જ્યારે કાનજી માટે બધું ત્યજીને દોડી આવતી જીવી..!! બે માણસ કદિ એકબીજામાં એટલા ઓતપ્રોત કેવી રિતે થઇ શકે... કે પોતાના આજુબાજુના તમામ વાતવરણને ભુલી જાય..!! પોતના દુખ અને પડતી તકલીફને ન ગણકારે..!! અત્યારની પેઢીને કદાચ આ નવલકથાનો સાર સમજવામાં જરૂર તકલીફ પડે, પણ જે લોકો આઝાદી વખતના આપણા સમાજની કુપમંડુક બુદ્ધીને ઓળખતા કે જાણતા હશે, તે કાનજી અને જીવીના પ્રેમ અને પરિસસ્થિતીને જરૂર મહેસુસ કરી શકશે....!!

ગામડાના માનવી અને તેમની સામાન્ય બુદ્ધી, પણ તેમની અદભુત સહનશક્તિ, દરિયાજેવું તેમનું દિલ, તેમનો કપટરહિત પ્રેમ અને ગમે ત્યાં મળી આવતા સ્વાર્થી માણસો..!! આ બધાનું વર્ણન પન્નાલાલ પટેલે ખુબજ અદભુત રિતે કર્યુ છે..!! આ નવલકથા મારી આંખ ભીની થતા હું ના રોકી શક્યો..!! વાંચતા એમ થતું તું, લે હું પણ તેમની વારે(મદદે) દોડી જાઉં..!! એકવાર તો એવો પણ ગાંડો વિચાર આવેલો કે જો આજે પન્નાલાલ હયાત હોત તો, હું તેમને જરૂર પુછત કે કાનજી અને જીવીની આટલી તકલીફ તમે કેમ આપી..?? પણ પછી હું જ મારા પર દર્દભર્યુ હસી પડ્યો.

જે પ્રેમ તપતો નથી તે કદી અમર થતો નથી, આપણે રોમીયો જુલીયટ, શીરી-ફરહાદને તો મશહુર કરી દિધા છે, પણ આ નવલકથાના કાલ્પનીક પાત્રો જીવી અને કાનજીની આ પ્રેમકથા પણ કંઇ ઉતરતી નથી..!!!

હૂં ત્યાં સુધી કહિશ કે જો તમે આ નથી વાંચી તો તમે જરૂર કંઇક ગુમાવી રહ્યો છો, જેની તમને ખબર નથી..!! પણ હાં અહી એટલી ચોખવટ કરી દંઉ કે નવલકથા ગ્ર્રામ્યપુષ્ઠ ભુમી પર લખાયેલી છે અને ભાષા પણ એ સમયને અનુરુપ છે એટલે ગામઠી સંવાદો..!! એટલે એવું પણ બને અડધું તો ઉપરથી જ જાય...!!! :) :)

Leaving this unrated because I read a strange translation that was quite painfully literal with local slang and idioms. A pity because I have heard so much about Pannalal Patel's lyrical prose. The story itself is unmatched for angst and restrained passion, being about a forbidden inter-caste relationship in a small town in the 1940s. It suffers a little from the male gaze and I hated the way Jivi was punished by the narrative for dreaming of more. She's made to suffer relentlessly at the hands of society, her lover, and herself. Kanji only suffers vicariously at her suffering, which is quite irritating to me. Yes I do know that as an upper caste man, he would not be punished any where as much as she was, but that's exactly why I want to read about lower caste women like Jivi having full and enriching lives in defiance of casteist societies, not being subjected to gratuitous violence that eventually beats them down.

'મળેલા જીવ' માં 'માનવીની ભવાઈ' જેવું વિશાળ ફલક નથી, પાત્રો સ્પષ્ટ રીતે ઉપસી નથી આવતા કે નથી એના જેવું બળકટ સંવાદોનું સાતત્ય, પણ આ કથા હૃદયમાં સોંસરવી ઉતરી જાય છે. વાર્તાની તમામ મર્યાદાઓ સાથે એ સ્થળકાળની પૃષ્ઠભૂમિમાં આકાર લેતી Intense Love Story તરીકે એ વાચકને જકડી રાખે છે. અને છેલ્લે તો પન્નાલાલ પટેલની ઉત્તર ગુજરાતની ગામઠી પરિવેશમાં કહેવાયેલી આ નવલિકાનો ઓલો દોહરો જ મનમાં ગુંજયા કરે છે:

"ભૂલ્યા ભુલાશે મહિયર માળખાં,
ભૂલી જશું મોસાળે વાટ;
ભૂલી જશું પોતાની જાત.
(વળી) ભૂલી જવશે કો અભાગિયાં,
ભૂલી જવાશે પ્રીતની રીત;
(પણ) નહિ રે ભુલાય એક આટલું:
કોક દન કરી'તી પ્રીત."

આ એકલ અને નિરાળો પ્રેમકિસ્સો નથી,આ તો સમગ્ર સ્થાનિક લોકસંસાર પોતાના વમળમાં લેતું જળભમર છે,આ એક માનવયુગલની નહીં પણ સમસ્ત સમાજની સંવેદનકથા છે.ઈચ્છે કે ન ઈચ્છે તો પણ આંખો સમુદાય આ કથાની‌ તાવણમાં ઉપરતળે થઈ રહ્યો છે, આ વાર્તાની શિલ્પ વિશિષ્ટતા. માનવીઓ આ ધરતીની સુવાસ તો માણો! માનવીનું અહીં ઉઘાડું મુકાયેલું મન તો નિહાળો.
આ પુસ્તકની પ્રસ્તાવના ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણીએ‌ લખી‌‌ છે. તેમાં તેમણે જણાવ્યું છે કે, પન્નાલાલ પટેલ આ 'મળેલા જીવ' વિષે થોડું લખવાની તક મેં ઝડપી ત્યા��ે એ પ્રકારનો ભય હતો જ.પણ મેં એની વચ્ચે થી માર્ગ એવો કાઢવા ધરેલો કે ખુદ વિષે ને લેખકની જીવન ભૂમિકા વિષે કાંઈક લખીશ.આ માટે એના જાણકાર ભાઈ ઉમાશંકરને થોડી વિગતો પૂછાવી.તેનો જે જવાબ મળ્યો. તેણે મને આ ભૂલમાંથી પણ બચાવી લીધો. જવાબનો થોડો ભાગ અહીં ઉતારું છું.
આ -પન્નાલાલ-જેવા લેખકો બહાર આવે છે, છતાં એ વાત સહેલાઈથી ભૂલી જઈને આપણે પછી એના વ્યક્તિગત જીવનમાં વધારે રસ લેતા થઈએ જઈએ છીએ. ખાસ કરીને એ કઠતા સંજોગોમાં પસાર થયેલો કે થતો હોય તો. પછી પછી વિવેચન જાણે કે લેખકની વિટંબણા વટાવવા બેસે છે.
જીવી અને કાનજી નવી નવાઈના નથી. 'મળેલા જીવ'મા નવી બાબત નથી.એના રુપજોમ અને એની જોવાની અન્યને અજાણ્યા નથી.મેળાના‌ ચકડોળને ફાળકે બે રુપ ઢૂંકડા બેસીને પાવાના સ્વરો વાટે ફિદા બને તેય ક્યાં નવીન‌ છે.

દરેક ગુજરાતી બૂક લવર ના જીવન માં અગત્ય નું સ્થાન ધરાવતી આ નવલકથા વિષે લખવા માટે શબ્દો ખૂટે છે. કાનજી અને જીવી એ માત્ર કથા ના પાત્રો જ નહીં પરંતુ પ્રેમની ભાષા ના અભિન્ન અંગ બની ગયા છે. કથા માં આવતો પ્રત્યેક વળાંક એક આંસુ નું બુંદ નિતરાવીને જાય છે.
એક વખત આ પુસ્તક અવશ્ય વાંચવું.
