Catherine ‘Cat’ Palmer realises, too late, that bringing an adorable puppy into work at the local nursery was a bad idea, especially after the ensuing chaos gets her the sack. Determined to turn a negative into a positive, Cat decides this is the perfect opportunity to get her dog-walking business off the ground with the help of her flatmates, Polly and Joe. After all, Primrose Terrace where she lives, is full of home-alone hounds…
Wellies and Westies is the first part of a serialized novel told in four parts – all set in Primrose Terrace.
I grew up in London surrounded by books and with a cat named after Lawrence of Arabia. I studied English Literature at the University of East Anglia and live in Norwich with my husband David.
I'm a total book nerd and my TBR pile is out of control. I would quite like to be a ghost hunter, and I'm a huge fan of a fictional hero.
When I'm not writing, I spend my spare time reading, returning to London or exploring the beautiful Norfolk coastline.
I love hearing from readers, so please get in touch if you have a question or if you just want to say hello.
This wasn't really what I expected. I kinda accidentally one-clicked this first part of a serial, but you know what? I really enjoyed it. And I'm looking forward to reading the rest as it's released.
Cat is quite a funny character, and she really does mean well. She's so bright and happy and really up-lifting to read about.
This was the lovely first book in the Primrose Terrace series.
When Cat loses her job in a nursery because she took a neighbours puppy with her as a favour- she needs to find a new way to earn a living so that she can carry on living in the lovely seaside town with her friend Polly and her brother Joe.
She decides that she should start a dog walking business but Joe won't allow any dogs across the threshold of the house they share.
She meets a good looking stranger in the park and sparks fly!
I can't wait to read the rest of the series and meet new dogs and their owners!
Many thanks to Net Galley for a copy of this book.
O-M-G I really really loved this book so much, again it is part of a short series so it was relatively short but I honestly loved this storyline so much. I have never read animal lover based books before so it was refreshing to read it (I think I have but I can't remember the name of the book for the life of me!).
Cat makes a huge mistake, only she realises it too late. She brings a puppy to work and she knows she is not supposed to yet she does it anyways (her boss also doesn't like animals) so she gets fired from her job. However, this turns out to be a very good opportunity for Cat as she decides to open her own dog walking business with the help of Joe and Polly.
I absolutely adored Polly, not only is she a very good friend to Cat but she is training to be a vet so it turns out to be a very good business proposition as she also joins the business. And Hot Joe? He can come across as a bit harsh sometimes but really when he gives you his full attention you might just end up being dazzled. I for one cannot wait for the next book!
I admit to reading this due to having owned a westie. It was a lovely light and entertaining read. Nice to have a male friend character within the story who balanced it nicely. My only gripe is it ended too soon.
From the prettiness of spring right the way through to the snowiness of winter, I immediately felt safe in the knowledge that I'd have this series to look forward to throughout the rest of the year, and really, with covers as cute as these, how could anybody in their right mind say no? And the pooches? Well, just... *implodes*
Anywaaaaay, once I'd read the blurb for each of the above novellas, I just couldn't wait to get started. My interest was seriously piqued and I'm pretty sure that I was just a couple of fierce taps away from breaking my laptop when it came to requesting Wellies and Westies on NetGalley. When I received the email from Harper letting me know that I'd been accepted to read, I squealed. What? I know you do it too, so don't even lie!
In Wellies and Westies by the marvellous Cressida McLaughlin, we meet Cat (Catherine Palmer). The author got off to a winning start by having me laugh at just couple of pages into the novella, and this is always a fantastic sign in my eyes. Due to taking a puppy into work with her at the local nursery, Cat is let go from her position and suddenly finds herself jobless. So, with no job, then what else to do other than finally take her dream of building up her dog-walking business and perhaps, make it come true?
Despite Wellies and Westies being a novella rather than a full length novel, I felt like so much happened within it's 98 pages. Not only does Cat begin to slowly make her dream come to life, with her friends Polly and brooding Joe by her side, but Cat makes some brand new sparkly friends along the way. Attending fancy parties, making new contacts, and stumbling across seriously sexy Mark and his adorable Border Collie Chips, paves Cat's way to success, and I had everything crossed throughout my reading of her journey.
In Wellies and Westies, Cressida's voice speaks loud and clear. The author has such a gorgeously cosy tone to her writing, which invited me into her world of Primrose Terrace after just a few short paragraphs. The descriptions of this charming setting worked wonders with my imagination and I loved learning about Cat's surroundings and of course, Cat herself. Her love for all things dogs, her ambition and drive, her determination to not get down and out about the circumstances, she was just fantastic. I really, really, really cannot WAIT for part two of the series. I felt like things were just getting started in Wellies and Westies, which to me, felt like the perfect way to begin such a promising series!
Becca's Books is awarding Wellies and Westies by Cressida McLaughlin with FIVE GORGEOUS CUPCAKES! Everything about this was just brilliant, and I cannot tell you how frickin' excited I am for part 2! Bring it on, Cressida, you fabulous author, you!
I was recently sent a new novella, the first in a series, to review by publishers Harper Collins, and I knew the author name was familiar to me but I couldn't quite place it! Cressida McLaughlin is actually a reviewer for another review website, Novelicious, so I was excited to read her debut novel and see what the story was going to be like. I have to mention the really cute cover too, I love how eBook covers are becoming more and more important, and they actually reflect the books now, this one is certainly one of my favourites this year!
Cat Palmer loves dogs, and is sure she is going to make a success of her new dog walking business after unsurprisingly losing her job at the local nursery when she takes a puppy to work with her. The kids loved it but her boss didn't. Instead, Cat rallies around the residents of Primrose Terrace and the local town and finds lots of new clients for her to go walking, in rain or shine. Cat takes to her job rather quickly, and makes a few new friends along the way too...
This novella was the perfect length for me, with a print length of 98 pages, meaning there was enough time for the story and characters to develop, but left enough to keep us hanging and excited for the other installments! I really liked the main character of this book, Cat, although I was a bit frustrated about how naive she was about taking an animal to work with her! How she ever thought it was going to work was beyond me, but certainly made for some amusing reading! I liked how determined she was to make her new business work, working hard to get new clients. The dogs were so well described too, they each seemed to have their own characters (as well as quirky names!), and were a fun addition to the story - Disco was definitely my favourite!
The other residents of Primrose Terrace were well written too, including Cat's flatmates Polly and Joe, and their new mysterious neighbour Mark, another dog owner. I hope we will get to find lots more about the other residents of the terrace as the stories progress, and we see how Cat's business is going too! The novella was very easy to read, lots of characters to enjoy and I enjoyed the progression of the story, and I really enjoyed the community aspect of the story too, everyone's lives being intertwined, especially with Cat holding it all together, along with holding the dog leads! The second novella in the series, Sunshine and Spaniels is coming mid-June, and I'll certainly be reading that - this was a strong debut and I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
Although I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, I’d already pre-ordered this book when it was available to pre-order because I knew it would be right up my street – and I was right! I ate this sweet little tale up in one afternoon with my own little (half) Westie for company.
Wellies and Westies, the first part of a the 4 part Primrose Terrace series introduces our main character, Cat who ironically – loves dogs – has just been fired from her job and is now at a loose end of what to do with her life. After chatting with elderly neighbour and fellow dog lover, Cat decides to pursue her love of the furry four legged friends and start up her own dog walking business and along the way, makes new friends and meets mysterious Mark – a new Primrose Terrace resident.
I instantly warmed to Cat – she radiates warmth and has such a good heart, despite getting fired from her job within the first few pages! I loved her kindness and quirkiness and her determination to start up her own business doing something she loves – which I found very admirable! And of course, her love for four legged friends which we very much share. All the residents of Primrose Terrace we’ve met so far have been interesting, well developed characters who play a vital role in this little community. None of the characters seem out of place or unnecessary and they’re all so diverse it’s not hard to remember who they are!
By chapter one, Primrose Terrace, the dogs and the residents were firmly etched into my brain for good. I could almost hear the dogs barking and see the pretty pastel painted houses of Primrose Terrace as if I was walking down the street along with Cat. Cress really does stick you in a teleportation device and sends you to this delightful little setting which I definitely haven’t got enough of yet – luckily there’s 3 more novellas! Even the dogs I found all had their own individual personalities and traits!
The end of book 1 sees that it seems to be all coming together for our lovely main character, Cat but who knows what the next three will bring, what challenges she will face and what sort of clients she’ll meet – two legged and four. I’m so excited for the next 3 instalments because I really can’t even hazard a guess on what’s going to happen. A super cute and fun little read that incorporates blossoming relationships, friendship and of course – dogs – into one neat and charming little package.
I was so delighted when Wellies and Westies popped up on my kindle! It was one of my most anticipated releases of the Spring and I was sure I'd love it. After all, who doesn't love a westie? They're one of the cutest dog breeds around. I also loved the cover, with its bright, fresh colours, perfect for the season and that subtle hint of romance with the male and female feet heading towards each other.
The story itself was cute- Cat has moved to a new area and taken a job at a nursery. She knows it's not the right place for her, but on a practical level it's a real blow when she gets the sack-she's still got her bills to pay, after all. So, she uses her initiative, and with the encouragement of her friends Polly and Joe her new business 'Pooch Promenade' is born.
Cat's new career is one aspect of this novella, but her love life is another. She keeps running into Mark and his collie in the neighbourhood when she's out walking the dogs, but he's hard to fathom. The owner of the local coffee shop has suspicions he's up to no good, and is he romantically involved with the minor celebrity who lives down the road?
I didn't take to Mark at all, I'm sorry to say. He gave me the willies with his arrogant nature and borderline slimy flirting. Cat's flatmate Joe on the other hand-he was much more my type. I'm looking forward to finding out more about him and his well-toned abs in the next book...
But Wellies and Westies introduces not just the human characters, because there are canine ones too-and they really are characters in their own right. I'm definitely dog broody as a result of reading this. Disco is an absolute charmer of a dog!
Cressida McLaughlin has an easy-to-read writing style and a chatty and engaging voice, which reminded me of Sophie Kinsella. I can absolutely see why she's so highly regarded within the genre and I'm sure this series is going to be a great platform for her to build her readership.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novella, my only complaint being that it seemed to end too abruptly. The next instalment of Primrose Terrace is out next month, and I can't help but wonder if it would have worked better if the publisher had released this series as a full length. That said, I'm certainly going to keep reading and look forward to Sunshine and Spaniels' release on June 18th.
*Book provided by the publisher on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
I was so happy when I heard Cressida git a publishing deal wuth HarperCollins and when I read the blurbs and saw the beautiful covers, I was really excited.
Wellies and Westies tells the story ic Cat, who usn't iff to a good start at the beginning of the book. She gets fired from the nursery she works at and diesn't know what to do with her life. Talking to her roomate Poppy and and anither friend at Primrise Terrace she gets the idea of doing a dog-walking business. She starts wuth her friend Ellie's dogs and opens a Twitter and Facebook account to promote the business. She soon has a famous client, Jessica from number 1, she's an author. I loved who passionate Cat was about ut and she put all her heart in ut, that was feelable throughout the pages. Cat is a great character and I unstantly felt related to her, really well lined out as well.
Walking the dog she meets handsome Mark, who has a dog as well. The two of them get along really well, but Cat is unsure, because she thinks that Mark might be with Jessica. I really liked Cat's and Mark's scenes together, the way the bumped into eachother and just their conversations. I believe there us a real spark there, bur we'll see.
Jessica invites Cat and her roomates Poppy and Poppy's brother Joe to a party, Mark is there as well. So there is plenty if time to find more clients and find out what the connection between Mark and Jessica is. Poppy and Joe were great as well, Joe with his no dog rule ;) that could get interesting...
Cressida's writing has got it all: humour, spark, magic and this very unique touch. I felt like being there with the characters, as part od the story, I could imagine all the scenes and moments so clearly, it's full kf rich details and written in a fresh and young voice. I can't wait to read the other parts if this series, I need them asap!!! ;)
I would like to thank publisher Harper Collins for approving me to read this on NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I will mention the covers of this series how could I not love them they have dogs on them and as soon as they were introduced to the world I knew I just had to read them.
When Cat decides to take a puppy into her job at a nursery it's not the best decision that she has ever made, especially has a boss is rather a stick in the mud and likes an ordered life. She is immediately fired and has to decide what to do with her life, now she hasn’t got a job. Having a bottle of wine with her best friend she decides the way forward is to set up a dog walking business.
Right from the start I couldn't help but like Cat, she is full of fun and really one of life’s dreamers but at least she tries. I loved her flatmates Polly and Joe. I wasn’t sure on Mark though, I get the feeling he is hiding something. I love how the book is set around a terrace in a small town and how their lives intertwine with each others.
This is a lovely summer read, full of fun especially when Cat takes too many dogs for a walk. When I got to the end of this novella I really couldn't wait to find out what happens next to the residents of Primrose Terrace and I really get the feeling it isn't going to be plain sailing. A wonderful read and Cressida really draws you into the lives of the characters from page one.
Cat is starting a new life house sharing with her two friends Polly and Joe in Primrose Terrace, she has a job as a nursery assistant and everything is looking great until she decides to take a cute puppy to work with her and although the kids love it her boss certainly doesnt and sacks her.
With the help of her two friends she decides to set up a dog walking business and her first customer is a local celebrity with 3 westies but is she going out with the gorgeous Mark or is he up for grabs?
A great lighthearted read - especially for dog lovers - I can just see my disreputable pooch causing chaos for a dog walker and I am looking forward to the follow ups
Primrose Terrace was an elegant crescent moon of tall, stately town houses, some in better repair than others, but all with their own charm. Each of the houses was painted a different pastel colour, their large front doors raised up from the pavement, reached by three wide front steps. The grass verges were peppered with primroses in the spring, and old-style street lamps made Cat feel she was in a Dickens adaptation whenever there was a hint of fog.
In Wellies and Westies, we are introduced to (Cat) Catherine Palmer, who loses her job at a nursery for bringing a puppy to work. With no job, she decides to pursue her dream of starting a dog-walking business – Pooch Promenade. Cat is starting to achieve her dream with the help of her friends Polly and Joe, and she also makes new friends along the way. By attending parties, networking, and meeting a charming man named Mark and his dog Chips, Cat is on her way to success.
We meet various types of people with their dogs and their names –
Emma, four years old child and her dog Olaf, the cocker spaniel puppy.
Mark and his dog Chips, is a glossy border collie.
Elsie Willows and her dogs Chalky an older miniature schnauzer and Disco.
Jessica Heybourne and her Westies dogs Valentino, Coco and Dior.
Owen Capello and his dog Rummy some kind of terrier.
Wellies and Westies is the first part of a serialised novel told in four parts – all set in Primrose Terrace.
Having read 'Once in a Blue Moon Guesthouse' and thoroughly enjoying it I was expecting to enjoy this and so far I have. Cat is sharing a house with her friend Polly and Polly's brother Joe. Cat works in a children's day nursery but not for long when she smugglers a puppy in to look after for an older lady called Elsie who is unable to walk her dogs due to knee surgery. Back to the nursery w here the puppy is getting bored and escapes the confines of Polly's handbag. The children love this and even more so when the puppy spends a penny on the floor! Later in the day after talking to both Elsie and Polly she starts up her new company called 'Pooch Promenade'!
I love animal stories being a doggie person, dog walking is something I would have done myself if I'd have been younger. I am happy to look after animals, but as I now spend the winter in the sun, I am only available in the Summer. I love to look after friends dog's while they go on holidays.
The first book in the Primrose Terrace series, this is a lovely short quick read. Cat recently new to the area is living with her friend and recently loses her job at a nursery. Her love for dogs prompts her to start her how dog walking business. Im looking forward to reading more of the series and development of Cat, the dogs, her business and friendships.
This book is about a girl who loses her job and decides to start a business walking dogs. The writing is basic, and it’s difficult to know the characters.
This is a start of a new series by the author - was okay nothing to great. Passed a few hours on a few days during the rain. Already have the next 3 on my Kobo.
"Wellies and Westies" introduces us to the Primrose Terrace series, as it is the first of four parts, and all of them have dogs in the titles! As you can usually spot me in my own muddy wellies, with a smelly pockets full of treats for my dog, I was sure this book is so going to be so up to my street. I was more than excited when an email notified me that I was accepted to read it and so as soon as it landed on my kindle I was lost for the world. Not for long, as it is a cute, sweet short story.
And BTW, have you seen the cover? Oh joy...! Such a wonderful cover...!
Taking a puppy to the nursery where she works was not Cat's best idea ever, as - of course! - chaos ensues, and Cat is fired on the spot. But Cat is not crying over the spilled milk, oh no, very quickly a new plan is conceived - Cat is going to be a dog - walker. Fortunately, there are many residents in Primrose Terrace who have dogs and little time. Cat is going to get to know not only the four - legged clients, but also the two - legged, and a celebrity among them.
But to be honest, I am not yet so sure about Cat. I mean, taking a puppy with her into the nursery where she works, even though she knows her boss is a sticking to the rules, very precise woman and who had let Cat know her thoughts on dogs already - would you do this? I don't think so. And Cat strikes me as a little hot - headed, who first says and does and only then thinks about the consequences, and she's big enough already to know better, right? Not respecting what other people tell her, and doing things at any cost. On the other hand, she's funny and she may have her head in the clouds, but at least she's not wallowing in self - pity but trying! And oh my, her need to know everything about other people, ekhm, I guess we are also as nosey as Cat, no? Maybe not to such an extend, Cat is extreme in this matter, but as long as she doesn't hurt anybody, why not?
From all the other characters I think that the dogs are those that we know most :) I love Disco, and all the other dogs, and they are really great written - I mean, they are like real dogs, not too exaggerated. Polly is a really brilliant great friend, and when we eventually got to know why Joe is like he is, I have warmed to him as well, although why is he so scared of dogs? Methinks that there is more to Mark than meets the eye, I don't know but he was... strange, as if he has a secret or two, he was too at bay for my liking and I really think he's hiding something.
But it was a lovely read, and I really adored how the lives of the characters intertwined, how there was this nice, warm feeling of the community, how the people got together. There are some funny scenes, and it has a feel - good factor to it. It was a great introduction to the rest of the series and my gut feeling is telling me that it won't be a walk in the park (yes! pun intended :) ) for Cat and other characters. I am really looking forward to the next 3 stories in the series, because if they are going to be like "Wellies and Westies" then we are for a real treat.
Copy received from publisher in exchange for a review.
Cat's day doesn't start off well when she's fired from her job as a nursery assistant. But by the end of the day she's picked herself up and is feeling more positive than she has in quite a while. Cat adores dogs and she enjoys walking through the local park and along the beach, so why not combine the things she loves and start up a business?
Wellies and Westies is the first of the four-part Primrose Terrace series. Dogs are always a welcome addition to a book and as this series centres around our four-legged friends, I was looking forward to diving in. With the help of her housemates, Polly and Joe, Cat sets up her dog-walking business and begins to accumulate clients. While she's walking the dogs, Cat starts to learn more about her neighbours on Primrose Terrace and meets the handsome but smug-chinned Mark and famous author Jessica.
While Cat is attracted to Mark, she senses there is something going on between him and Jessica, so he's out of bounds until she can find out what is going on. Then there is Joe, her housemate and the brother of her best friend, Polly. Joe is still heartbroken over his recent relationship breakup and this can make him pretty grumpy at times, but there are flashes of a sweet bloke buried beneath all the hurt. I liked that there are two possible candidates for romance for Cat (I do like a good love triangle) and I'm looking forward to finding out how it will all work out during the course of the series.
I really enjoyed Cressida's style of writing. It was so warm and inviting and I could completely relax and enjoy the story unfolding before me. Cat is a great central character and I can't wait to find out what adventures she'll get up to in Fairview. The setting of Fairview is perfect - I love the idea of the beach being just around the corner and the park, with its pesky squirrels and pavilion café, sounds delightful. I also love the idea of Primrose Terrace, with its pretty pastel-coloured houses and I'm looking forward to getting to know more of its residents. And then there are the dogs, who I absolutely loved, especially little Disco. I wanted to reach into my kindle to give her a great big cuddle!
Wellies and Westies is a fantastic start to this new series and I'm very much looking forward to continuing Cat's story in Sunshine and Spaniels, which is out in June.
Catherine Palmer, to her friends and family known as Cat, has been fired from her job working as a nursery assistant after bringing a puppy with her to work. She's not quite sure what to do next in her life, but decides to stay positive and try turning one of her hobbies into her profession by starting her own dog-walking business. The area she lives in, Primrose Terrace, is filled with people who have dogs and Cat is sure her flatmates Polly and Joe will help her spread the word. It doesn't take long before Cat finds her first customer, but will she really be able to get her own business off the ground? And what else will Primrose Terrace have in store for her...?
An incredibly promising start to a new serialised romantic comedy novel! I already had a good feeling I would end up enjoying 'Wellies and Westies', the first part of the 'Primrose Terrace' series by Cressida McLaughlin, and I'm really happy my feeling was right! Cat is a great protagonist whom I liked straight away. She definitely has her head in the clouds and doesn't always think about her actions, but this, combined with her bravery for starting her own dog-walking business, makes her a perfect chick lit heroine. I'm not too much of a dog fan myself, but I loved reading about Cat's passion for dogs, the different dogs that make an appearance in the novel and how Cat deals with them and their antics.
This story is also a promising start to this series because of the wonderful collection of characters we are introduced to. There's Cat's flatmates Polly and Joe (who hates dogs...), famous author Jessica who lives in the neighbourhood, and mysterious and handsome stranger Mark who seems to suddenly pop up everywhere Cat goes. This introduction to them and their stories has definitely made me curious and I can't wait to read more. Cressida McLaughlin has a great, warm, well-paced writing style which suited the story well and which I personally really enjoyed. 'Westies and Wellies' is a promising start to a lovely, warm, and hopefully pretty amazing new chick lit e-book series and I definitely look forward to picking up the next part, 'Sunshine and Spaniels', as soon as possible!
Wellies & Westies is the first of a four part serialised novel and I am hooked! Welcome to the world of Cat Palmer, and what a fun world I feel it is going to be. As we meet Cat she has taken a puppy in her bag to work at a nursery. Not her best decision when her boss finds out and fires her.
But for Cat is the start of a new potential career as a dog walker. As the business takes off we laugh at her exploits, and meet some of her neighbours in Primrose Terrace. I loved the locals and her flatmate. They brought a really fun, but sentimental element to the series and I reckon they are going to be great fun to follow in the future.
I lay in bed reading this with my Westie, Mr Sniffles lying beside me. He looked up at me strangely as I laughed out loud more than once when reading, and I was able to give him a big cuddle when I had finished. I even contemplated becoming a dog walker like Cat, but between memories of his exploits, and the chaos in the book I may have changed my mind...
Cressida is a great author. I often struggle with serialised novels because it's hard to get to know the characters in small snippets, and I feel left hanging. This isn't the case with Wellies and Westies. Her skilled writing and descriptions made me feel I knew Cat and the gang as soon as I met them. I wanted to move in to Primrose Terrace and join them. I reckon it would be great fun. She has also left me really excited about the second part, Sunshine and Spaniels, which is out on 18 June.
Wellies and Westies is a fabulous read. It will make you laugh and want more, leaving you with a warm smile and happy feeling. It is hard to put down and you are likely to devour it in one sitting and be left wanting the next installment.
Thank you to Harpercollins who kindly provided a copy in return for an honest review.
When I found out this was going to be a series of novellas I knew I had to read it. By now you will know my love with novellas, they are perfect for busy days and when you can only give yourself half an hour to read. This is perfect for those occasions, you get to feel satisfied after a short period of reading and cannot wait for the next installment of the series.
The first think that I thought when I saw the cover for this series was, how beautiful! Each and every installment has a beautiful cover, which just makes me want to read it even more!
I love how easy this novella was to read, only after the first few pages I was in love with Cat, who works in a nursery but makes a huge mistake when she takes her puppy to work with her one day. Unfortunately for Cat the day goes from bad to worse and she ends up fired. After feeling sorry for herself and a chat from her best friend she decides to become a dog walker and begins to set up her own business. I think it is ever so hard to build relationships between the characters and the reader in such a short space of time but McLaughlin manages to pull it off and have you the reader rooting for Cat from the first few pages.
I love how the book is set round a small community and I would love to like in Primrose Terrace, I began to love all the characters that were introduced to me and through development they all have separate stories that mix together.
This is a must summer read this summer, perfect for those moments in the garden or lazing by the pool, it is funny, light and lovable. I really cannot wait for the others in the series.
I would like to thank the publisher for sending this in exchange for an honest review.
Wellies and Westies is the first part of a four parts serialised novel by debut author Cressida McLaughlin. I think serialised novels are really fun to read but difficult to write, especially the first parts, as you only have a hundred pages to introduce your characters and start a story that will interest the readers. But in this case Cressida does a fantastic job as we get to know Cat quite well. She is one of those dreamers that thinks that the world can be a better place. Her enthusiasm is addictive and soon, you find yourself on board with her crazy ideas. But maybe her latest one is not that crazy, it seems like her neighbours are in need of a dog walker and she is the perfect one (with a bit of practice!).
For me, the highlight of the story are the dogs (and Joe). Cressida introduces us to a lovely bunch of dogs that gives us some of the funniest moments of the story (especially when there's a squirrel involved). And then, I really liked Joe, one of Cat's roommates. I have a feeling that he has a lot to tell and he will surprise us. I am also very intrigued by Mark, a possible client (and more) for Cat. I can't wait to find out more about him.
As you can see, I feel quite invested in the story already and I am looking forward to the second part to keep reading about Cat's (and her dogs) adventures.
Wellies and Westies is a cute quick read that you can enjoy one afternoon in the park. If you are a dog lover (or a cat lover, as Joe's not a dog person at all and has a cat as a pet) you can't miss this one.
Cat works as an assistant teacher and she sees things a bit different than her employer. She has all kinds of fantastic ideas for the children, but she's never allowed to do anything she likes. When she smuggles a puppy into the classroom it's the last straw for her boss and she loses her job. She loves living with her friend Polly and Polly's brother Joe in Fairview and she doesn't want to leave this wonderful coastal town. To be able to pay her rent Cat starts a dog walking service. She loves animals and they love her, so how hard can it be?
I love the beautiful setting, Primrose Terrace and its inhabitants are wonderful. I could picture everyone so well. Cat is headstrong and she does things without thinking them through. I liked that about her and it makes her a great main character. Polly keeps her grounded, she's the perfect best friend for Cat. Joe is grumpy and he clearly sets his boundaries, but he's also really sweet. The main characters of this book aren't only people, there are also several great dogs with their own distinctive personality. I loved that Cressida McLaughlin also paid attention to the dogs. They are such an important part of the story, so it's lovely to see that the author has given them so much thought.
Cat has a good heart and she's a warm and loving person, but she tends to make a mess of things. It is clearly noticeable up front when something isn't going to end well. None of these situations are seriously damaging for anyone and they are very funny. I really liked this light, comic atmosphere. Wellies and Westies is part of a series of four novellas, all set in Primrose Terrace. I can't wait to read the next one!
A great easy summer day read. I sat reading this in the garden, all morning sat with the sun in the sky feet up reading. I only managed to stop to make food and a drink. A great easy read. enjoyable. fun, refreshing ...
Wellies and Westies is the first part of a serialized novel told in four parts – all set in Primrose Terrace. I am really looking forward to the other 3 parts. I think if they are anything like this one, then they are going to be a must read.
I can't really say more than what the blurb says as I feel I would be going too much into the story and giving too much away, so what I will say is, if the sun is shinning, buy yourself this book and go and sit in the garden for a while so you can read it, It will leave you feeling all happy and smiling. If it is a cold wet windy day, buy yourself this book, and go sit in a big comfy chair near the fire and forget the outside world for a while. you'll feel refreshed and able to carry on once you have read this book...
