This book felt amateur in the writing. I wanted more detail, and there was something missing to really draw me into the characters. Great idea but it all fell flat. I probably won't continue the series.

The narrative switches between the perspective of Axira and Jason, though the big question is: how did Axira escape from her master? It’s simply not addressed. I suspect that may be corrected down the line, but in this volume is a yawning gap, literally left as a “Five years later” heading. It does seem all her subterfuge might have been unnecessary, since it turns out the Coalition is willing to accept people with questionable pasts – though whether that extends to Axira remains to be seen. She’s basically an unindicted war criminal, though that doesn’t necessarily make her a bad person… At less than a buck to finish this story off, there’s a non-zero chance we’ll be revisiting the series at some point down the road.

I would definitely recommend this to those into space sci-fi and YAs although I think it is good enough for everyone! The author writes beautifully and the plot line is quite original. Not to mention the name is very unique too!

I liked this but wish the rest of the series was less expensive. If so, I would have immediately bought the rest.

Part military, part mystery, and strong on female characters, it is a very good space opera. After being a slave for hundreds of years, Axira joins the Coalition Academy to fight back. She learns it is not so easy to hide her skills, being from a race that many believe has mythical abilities, and that fighting against something is different from fighting for something.

An interesting mix of alien species, a war and piracy that is ongoing, good guys, and a spy, it is a good read for YA and grownups.

The big negative for me is the author does not write male, human characters well. The main character for this is Jason, a few years ahead of her in the academy who is interested in Axira. He was very flat, unlike his sister, who was well-written. I felt nothing towards him and even his looks did not register in my mind. Since he appears to be the future romantic role, that is a failure in the writing.

A Great Book

This was an awesome book and it looks like it will be a great series. The storyline is great filled with action, adventure, suspense, and drama. The characters are amazing. I loved that Em escaped the life of slavery and was trying to forge a new path. Elle was amazing with her loyalty and exuberance. I couldn't quite figure out Jason. The beautiful Hendra was so very evil.
I look forward to reading book 2 to see what lies ahead for Em. I would definitely recommend this book to all my sci-fi loving friends.

Ax is unusual

A different take on the usual space opera. Axira is a different kind of kick ass heroine who has freed herself from a horrible kind of servitude to fight for the good guys and take down her former master

3/5 it's a simple space & alien story with a protagonist that is hundreds or years old yet talks like a teenager. Maybe not meant for my age.
