I read the first few chapters of this book as included in the box set that I bought on my Kindle app.
I really enjoyed the first book in the parent series, but I have to say I did not like it when Vance gave in to the dark Demon side of his past, and from there and in all honesty it just went entirely downhill.
I especially didn't like the twist that happened at the end of 3, and 4 [especially 4] and 5 were just ten shades of disappointing.
That being said, I did enjoy some of the story, enough to at least finish it, but one major qualm I have and will continue to have throughout the Coven series [by the looks of things so far] is that Portia is now human, and yet her husband is a demon-slash-warlock, who not only has all of Portia's and his father's powers, but he also has the combination Awakening/Regenerative properties he stole from/inherited from his father... Plus, to top it off, his and Portia's only daughter is a witch, and manifested when she was just born.
My problem with this, is what is going to happen when now-mortal Portia finally dies, and her husband CAN'T die, because of the Awakening/Regenerative properties, and her daughter will end up outliving her because she's a witch...
For the whole entire parent series, we had Vance complaining about how he couldn't live without Portia, he wouldn't live without Portia, he'd die if something happened to Portia, and now... Portia's mortal and no longer supernatural and she's definitely gonna die, someday, and then what is Vance going to do? Continue to raise their witch daughter while pining for the lost love of his young adult life? I'm sorry, I know the story is fiction, and not to be taken seriously, but this just doesn't make sense. In fact, it reminds me of the Divergent series. You start out with this super powerful heroine [Portia's a witch who has NO TROUBLE controlling her brand new powers and doing all sorts of crazy things, and you have Tris Prior, who is a super powerful Divergent and fits into her chosen faction after only a few months because she has the aptitude for it and also has a dark, mysterious boyfriend who hates his mean, abusive father... but I won't get into that.] and then 2/3s into the series we find the main character actually does have flaws, but she's still uber powerful and then what happens? ... Spoilers. ''People'' die, and the story just stops. The characters leftover may go on, but they're nowhere near what they were at the beginning of the story. Is it gonna be like that for Vance, too? And Kenna? His wife and her mother just perishes because she's mortal and everyone moves on with their lives after a few pages of angst and grief?
I realise this review is probably widely scattered, but it fits with my head in relation to this story so I'm not gonna apologise for it if anyone gets confused. I loved 'Trouble With Spells' but I don't think I'll bother with the rest of Coven. I'll just pretend the events in books 2 through 6 just didn't happen. It's better for my sanity.
