Bill Nye The Science Guy knows how cool science can be. After all, everything in the universe involves science. And you already think scientifically everyday, even if you don’t know it. So get ready for a universe of amazing fun—you’ll have a blast. Read about quarks, quasars, and the questions that scientists are still trying to figure out. And find spectacular science projects that let you see how cool science guys and gals can be. Do you know: that everything you see is made up of just 92 kinds of atoms? why this book and your hands are mostly empty space? how to launch a hot-air baloon? that light comes as both waves and particles (but doesn’t come out of a black hole?) how to build a miniature electric motor? why microwave ovens and lamps are like radios? how a television show arrives at your TV set? that we move more than 100 miles through space every second? about entropy? ozone? absolute zero? heavy water? pulsars?
Not to be confused with 19th century American humorist Bill Nye
William Sanford "Bill" Nye, popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, is an American science educator, comedian, television presenter, actor, writer, scientist, and former mechanical engineer, best known in popular media as a science educator.
I've always liked science, and was recognized for it when I was in school. I grew up on Bill Nye the Science Guy. When I was in fourth grade, I used to watch it every day when I got home from school. Even as an adult, I still find his show entertaining and informative...but this book was not! It reads like a textbook, and his crazy sense of humor from the television show does not translate to literary form. I can only recommend this to homeschooling parents or Bill Nye fanatics.
I read this book in grade 5 or 6, and it was key in developing my love of science. If you have a child or know a child in those grades, I strongly recommend picking up this book for them. They will gain an invaluable conceptual understanding of basic science concepts that will let them excel in school and life!
I like Bill Nye. This book has some decent stuff in there, but it is not usable for me as a teacher. It's not focused. Rather, it is one of those books that has a little bit of everything. For my classroom, I don't find it helpful.
