5 - Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened. Stars!

Jill Mansell always manages to turn what you expect to initially be a heart breaking tragedy, into a story that as it develops offers hope, humor and new beginnings. Three Amazing Things About You certainly fulfills those parameters, and then some.

Three women; Tasha, Hallie and Flo, living three completely different lives, in three separate parts of the UK, their lives gradually entwine as the book progresses, sometimes in small undetected ways, sometimes a little more obviously. You can’t help but come to care for them, their friends and families. And although you know it is coming, and as the synopsis says - Hallie goes on a journey. She's about to get new lungs. But whose lungs will they be? you cannot help but become emotionally involved. But from loss, comes life and new beginnings, friends and families.

I shed a few tears, had a few laughs and generally felt involved in every aspect of this book, and the challenges, situations and dilemmas the three women faced. This is a story that will make you think, reassess and ultimately realize that life is for living!

Jill Mansell always manages to make me feel like I’m reading a book version of Love Actually where we’re following three different storylines and somehow they all intertwine at the end, wrapped up with a neat little ribbon and a satisfied smile on my face.

First of all, there’s Hallie, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and is on the waiting list for a new pair of lungs. It could be any day now, but she knows there’s not much time left. On top of that, she’s got feelings for her handsome doctor, which could never work out, so that’s kind of awkward. Enter her ex-boyfriend and his ex-girlfriend and things just get more complicated than they ever should be.

Then we have Tasha, who’s pretty much the only single girl in her group of friends, until she meets Rory. He’s perfect for her, except for the fact that he’s an adrenalin junkie and she’s really anxious about him getting hurt. Is there such a thing as being too adventurous?

Last but not least, Flo inherits a cat, and the cat inherits a flat, so Flo is required to move in with the flat and the cat. This causes great resentment in Lena, the flat owner’s granddaughter, who’d been eyeing the flat for years (though the cat not so much). Lena is destined to hate Flo for life. Lena’s brother, Zander, however, falls in love with Flo. Imagine the family dinner parties! This should be fun.

I haven’t read a lot of Jill Mansell’s work, but I know that every single time, she manages to create unique stories which are warm, witty, and wonderful. The romances are stinkingly adorable if slightly unrealistic (but that doesn’t take away from the enjoyment) and the characters never fail to put a smile on my face. Three Amazing Things About You is no exception and has become my favourite story of hers so far.

This story in particular is quite a heart-warming one because it deals with quite a heavy topic, cystic fibrosis and impending death, as well as organ donation, which makes it all the more brilliant when the story ends on a positive note. Apart from that, the story stays with you after you’ve read the final page. It makes you think and it inspires you, and I think that’s a wonderful feeling to be left with.

I think it makes a huge difference when the book is about a place you know. I love getting three different women stories and how they all came together. I know this is more womens fiction but I still felt the romance was slightly rushed on all three stories and also the heroes were all quite weak.

Recommend if you enjoy
Women's fiction/chick lit
Books based in UK
Great bunch of characters
Not overly emotional
Some humour

I absolutely loved this read. It is three love stories in one, with each story taking place in different parts of the country and for quite a lot of the read, each couple is completely unknown to the others. Their paths do cross from time to time but they are really unaware of each other until their stories eventually merge in a tale that is quite bittersweet and emotional. I certainly needed those tissues at the end! I loved reading about each couple, Flo and Zander, Rory and Tasha and Hallie and Luke. Each story was unique but all six characters were extremely likeable and you just couldn’t help rooting for them and wanting each and every one of them to have a happy ever after. I don’t want to say any more about the characters, as I don’t want to spoil the read for anyone else – it is a story where it is better not to know too much about them at the start.

About halfway through the read a little light bulb went off in my head and I thought I knew how they were all going to be united – although the author still took me by surprise as, in the end, I was only partly right.

The words just flowed from the page and I couldn’t put the book down, even if I had wanted to. It is the first Jill Mansell I have read – I can’t believe I haven’t read any of her books before – but it certainly won’t be the last. She is an author who really is well and truly on my radar now. Many thanks to the publishers for the review copy.

At the start of the book we meet Hallie Kingsley and learn she is travelling to London for a lung transplant. She has advanced Cystic Fibrosis. We then step back in time to learn her back-story and to the point when she begins her romantic interest in her GP Dr Luke Hilton. Although somewhat house-bound, Hallie runs a successful on-line advice website and has a circle of supportive friends. Luke is attracted to her also, but the professional relationship between them prevents any closer connection.

A separate story line is the budding romance between Tasha Sykes, make-up artist, and Rory McAndrew, investment advisor, both in their mid twenties. Their meeting at a rubbish bin on Christmas Eve had me smiling from ear to ear. She is risk-averse, whereas he is into extreme sports. His daring adventures cause her great anxiety. Her best friend Carmel and his best friend Joe provide a satirical running commentary on their relationship.

Third story line is the budding romance between Flo Fenwick and Zander Travis. Flo, a care attendant, discovers to her shock that her client, Elsa has bequeathed her a flat in a trendy part of Bristol to her on the condition that she looks after Elsa’s beloved cat Jeremy until his death. Elsa’s granddaughter, the loathsome Lena, is outraged, but the grandson Zander is more accepting. He is attracted to Flo and she to him.

At certain points these three separate plot lines touch each other, and ultimately converge. Although they don’t know each other, the lives of the three couples intersect in unexpected ways, for example, Flo sells Hallie a unique, hand-crafted scarf at a market stall she is working on during a community event. Eventually the various strands, which have been running in parallel throughout the book, begin to interweave.

The related issues of organ transplant and organ donation combine to form a key theme that runs through the narrative. At 28, Hallie’s lungs are failing and her life expectancy is dropping, unless she is fortunate enough to get a transplant. As the story progresses she is not the only one who will need a new organ. This allows the author to open up and explore the ethical and emotional aspects of the practice.

The author also tackles various aspects of modern love and relationships through the vehicle of Hallie's 'Dorothy Dix' website. Hallie may be lonely and love-lorn, but she has a wise head on her shoulders and she dispenses sage advice to the readers of her on-line column. Some of her comments are wickedly tongue-in-cheek and amusing.

This book delighted and entertained me. The story is well-written, and the three separate strands are handled with great competence by this experienced author. I liked all of the characters, and enjoyed their ups and downs in the pursuit of true love. The romantic elements of the story are quite charming, and there are some highly amusing episodes at several points in the novel. This book is well-written chick lit, and as such should not be taken too seriously. It has more weight and depth than much of the chick lit I’ve read in recent times, and so I both enjoyed it and respected the author’s intent.

This was a random pick from my local library catalogue because the title relates to a reading challenge I am completing. I'd never heard of the author, Jill Mansell, and was surprised to find that she has written more than 20 novels. How she had escaped my attention I'll never know, but I'm so glad I've discovered her. I'm sure I'll be sampling more of her writing in future.

Well this is the first Mansell book I have loved. I think the reason why though is that we follow three separate couples/groups and then we get to see how in the world they all connect up with each other at the end. I maybe cried a bit too when I got to certain parts. I will say that I didn't buy the character of Flo getting along with her boyfriend's sister towards the end of the book. She (Lena) I found to be terrible. I don't know if I could have been so forgiving due to an accident that I still feel was Lena's fault. Either way though, I liked how the story moved months and then months again. We definitely get a sense of time passing and people growing up.

"Three Amazing Things About You" follows Hallie, Tasha, and Flo. These three women are thinly connected and until almost the end of the book, you don't understand why Mansell told the story the way she does.

Hallie has cystic fibrosis and knows that due to her condition that she does not have long to live. Her condition causes her to miss out on things that she yearns for like the ability to travel all over the world and just to walk without getting winded. What I really did like about Hallie though, is that she has her own blog where she gives out advice to her followers/readers. Due to Hallie's age though, I have to say that this whole thing with a 20 year old person giving out sage advice rung hollow for me. I have to call Dawson Creek levels of shennigans here. My friends and I say that all the time to each other when we read a book or watch a movie with a character who is young and dying and is full of wisdom about everything around them. Did I get a kick out of Hallie's column? Yes. Did I find it believable? Not a bit. I also found her responses to some readers to be harsh too.

Tasha is single and I am going to say it, picky as anything regarding what guy she will date. I am too though, so I actually cheered her for this. Out of the women we follow, I have to say that Tasha was my favorite. Tasha ends up having a fun meet-cute with a guy named Rory. She doesn't think she will see him again, but luckily for her, Rory can't get her out of his mind and arranges to see her again. These two quickly start throwing around the "L" word and both know they have found the one they want to be with. However, these two are complete opposites. Tasha likes to be safe and worries a lot about Rory who drives a motorcycle, rock climbs, and seems to be a total adrenaline junkie. Both Tasha and Rory's best friends think the couple is doomed though since they don't have a lot in common. There was a couple of moments there that I thought I knew where Mansell was going with Tasha and Rory, but glad to be proven wrong.

Flo is a carer at a retirement home. She ended up working for an elderly woman who of course lavished all of her love on her cat (yep, catlady). When the woman dies, she leaves the cat to Flo with the condition that Flo can leave in her flat as long as the cat lives. This of course ticks off the great niece and great nephew (brother and sister Zander and Lena). Flo though finds herself becoming more attracted to Zander even though Lena does her best to break them up.

There are a few secondary characters heads we get into while reading. We get to see Rory's and Zander's POV a few times throughout the story. I wish Mansell had included them more too since a lot comes up because of these two men. We also get Hallie's doctor, Luke's, POV as well. We actually get more of Luke which I thought was a shame since I think the women and men in this book all meet because of one character, and I wish we get more insight into that person.

We also get some secondary characters like Hallie's best friend, Tasha's best friend, etc. that don't come off very well while I was reading. I think it was because we had whole things revealed about them that you get told about later. It would have been nice if that was included while reading instead of being told, why yes, I have been doing X this whole time.

The writing was pretty good. The plot I will leave out since it will spoil you on the ending. The flow for this one was a lot better than previous Mansell books though. I think telling this in three separate stories works for this book. Usually Mansell has a huge cast of characters you are supposed to follow who all know each other, are lying about something, or are sneaking around. It's too much to be believed at times.

The setting of this book with the small villages and other locations (Hallie's home, Flo's flat, etc.) were very well done. I could picture each place perfectly in my head.

The ending really ties everything up. I was glad that Mansell actually wrote what I would consider a more mature chick-lit. You still get the romance side of things, but we also get to see something realistic and you get to see how one person's of HEA could be someone else's tragedy.

This is the third Jill Mansell book that I have included on my blog and I have made no secret of the fact that she is one of my favourite authors. I love whatever she writes and this, her 26th novel, is one of her best.

It is the story of three young women, all are strangers to each other but the way their lives connect and collide is one of the joys of the book. With the exception of one (and you will soon realise who that is!), all the characters are extremely engaging and likeable and the type of people that you could happily be friends with.

At the very beginning, we meet 28 year old Hallie when she is on her way to the hospital, excited but extremely scared at what is to come. Hallie has had THE phone call from her transplant coordinator. Hallie has cystic fibrosis and despite being confined to a wheelchair with an accompanying oxygen tank most of the time, she is upbeat, funny, kind and … in love, although the object of her desire doesn’t know it. Hallie is well aware that she may not have much time left unless a donor organ can be found. She also runs a website called ‘Three Things About You’, where those writing in for advice first have to list three facts about themselves. The advice that Hallie gave was a good insight to her character – she may have been seriously ill but she didn’t take any prisoners!

Tasha (otherwise known as ‘Bin Girl’ – this scene was just wonderful and had me grimacing and grinning in equal measures) has had that love at first sight experience. However she and her new boyfriend are completely different – he is an adrenaline junkie whilst she has no desire whatsoever to take part in extreme sports. Can their love really last despite their differences?

Flo, has become guardian to Jeremy, a very grumpy cat, who comes with his own accommodation. Flo loves her job in a retirement home and the interaction between her and her residents, particularly Margo, is wonderfully crafted. However, when she meets a new man, she encounters trouble from someone who seriously objects to her romance.

I loved this book. It had me laughing one minute and then almost crying the next. It deals with some difficult subjects – serious illness and the importance of organ donation but it never preaches and although at times it is an emotional read, it is also uplifting and joyous and is written with sensitivity and warmth. Even the friends and supporting characters had their own distinct personalities and were certainly a great addition to the story. Tasha’s best friend Carmel and Rory’s best mate Joe were just wonderful and the sparky dialogue between them worked so well.

At a certain point of the book, I thought I knew where the story was headed but there are little twists to keep you on your toes. By the time I got to the end my emotions had been through the wringer but it was a lovely journey and this book is deservedly another triumph for Jill Mansell.

‘Three Amazing Things About You’ was incredibly disappointing and lacked the charm and breeziness present in most of the author’s works. I have read and enjoyed many books by Jill Mansell, hence I can safely say that this book is one of her weakest.

Mansell’s formula tends to revolve around a few storylines which then intersect and connect perfectly. However, the three storylines here were completely boring and took forever to merge. There’s Hallie who’s in love with her doctor, Luke but she can’t be with him due to their professional patient-doctor relationship. Plus, she’s suffering from cystic fibrosis and doesn’t know how long she has left to live. The flaws in this storyline: the love interest Luke is boring and lacks personality (sadly, this applies to almost every character), Hallie (see previous), Hallie and Luke have zero chemistry.

Then there’s Flo who likes a good-looking guy named Zander but his obnoxious and dependent sister Lena keeps getting in their way. The flaws in this storyline: Flo is boring and lacks personality, Zander (see previous), Flo and Zander have no chemistry, Lena is supposed to be the antagonist but comes across as pathetic and annoying rather than truly threatening, Flo and Zander are ridiculous for trying to hide their relationship from Lena simply because she doesn’t approve. Last time I checked, adults can make their own decisions.

Lastly, there’s Tasha who meets her new boyfriend Rory in the most unconventional and unpredictable way. The flaws in this storyline: Tasha and Rory are both boring and lack personality, they have no chemistry, everything about their meeting to their sudden relationship to what they go through as a couple was unrealistic, Rory is supposed to be adventurous but he's more like an idiot. Of all the storylines, this was probably the worst because nothing at all was believable. Plus, I found Joe and Carmel to be cardboard characters and the common fake love-hate element was unbearable.

In short, all the characters were too nice (except Lena) and lacked personality. They were clones of each other. Coming from Jill Mansell, this book was a major letdown compared to gems such as ‘The Unpredictable Consequences of Love’, ‘Making Your Mind Up’ and ‘To the Moon and Back’.

Romance, hope, love, sacrifice ........ Yep, it's a good one!

I am so glad I requested a book by this author and quickly discovered I have been totally missing out on what she has to offer all these years. Unusual plot lines, witty and humorous conversation, off the chart likeable characters were all accounted for.

I don't know how she did it, but I was laughing one moment, teary-eyed the next, then found myself smiling again.

Really enjoyed reading three absolutely delightful storylines about three unique young women, on three distinct personal paths. Hallie, Tasha and Flo, all live in separate areas of the U.K. and living life to the fullest. As the storylines progress, the character's begin to intersect and become entangled with each other resulting in a wonderfully packaged bundle of goodness! It was masterful how this author wove all the individuals together in the most poignant yet uplifting way!

Hallie writes a popular advice column on the internet called "Three Things About You.com." She is also slowly dying from cystic fibrosis. Accepting the fact she will probably never marry or have children of her own, she fantasizes about having a fling with the one man she has always had a crush on, her doctor, Luke.

Tasha desires for the "perfect man" to someday come along and refuses to settle for anyone less. While embarrassingly rooting through a disgusting garbage can on a busy downtown street corner in search of a credit card she inadvertently threw away, she hears a voice asking if she needs help. When she stands up and turns around, there stands the man of her dreams, Rory.

Flo inherits a cat from Elsa, a deceased 82 year old woman she has been caregiver for over the past couple of years. Her last wishes are for Flo to care for her cat, but with one stipulation, she must live in Elsa's flat until the cat's demise. Problem is Elsa's granddaughter is contesting the will because she wants to take possession of the flat for herself. Elsa's grandson, Zander, is caught between loyalty to his sister and his attraction to Flo.

Three women, three journeys, one enjoyable read!

This book is written in a "Love Actually" kind of style, as it follows three women in their day to day lives and romances.

Hallie was born with cystic fibrosis and her health has been steadily declining over the years, and she desperately needs a lung transplant to give her a better quality of life. What people don't know is that she's secretly been in love with someone for a long time, but hasn't told him because she doesn't see the point if she doesn't have much longer to live.

Flo works as a carer for the elderly, and when when of her ladies passes away, she is charged with adopting the lady's cat, with strict stipulations that she has to live in and maintain the flat that the cat is used to living in. This doesn't go down well with the lady's grandchildren, who want the cat out of the way so that they can inherit the flat.

Tasha meets a great guy, but he's her opposite in every way, given that she likes things to be quiet and sedate and he likes to live on the edge. She's constantly living with anxiety that something will go wrong on one of his adventures. Can she handle it if something goes very wrong?

Life throws twists and turns at all of the characters, and they all get brought together in the craziest of circumstances.

This was heart-warming and feel-good, but also very sad. This author has a wonderful writing style. I really enjoyed this one.

I read quite a few of this authors books a few years ago. Have you ever read an author and then not read them for ages? When even the name of the author brings you back to a certain time in your life. Well that's what happened with this author. So when this book popped up on Net Galley I requested to read it. Jill certainly didn't disappoint me. I was transported back in time and I loved every minute of it.

This is the story of three women- Hallie, Tasha and Flo. Three women, three stories, three different parts of the UK. Each of their lives cross without knowing about it. A really brilliant and unique storyline.

This is such a great heart warming and emotional story. I went from grinning one minute to struggling with tears the next minute. The characters are well developed and very likeable. Super twists and turns which I didn't expect. The author wrote about chronic illness and organ donation in a sensitive manner.
Thank you Jill for a really amazing and emotional story. I highly recommend this story.

This Jill Mansell book has all of her signature storytelling genius (humor, quirky characters, and fun dialogue) with a shot of sentimentality and seriousness. I loved it and shed many tears as well. When the book starts off, you know one of the characters will die which saves the life of Hallie, but you don't know who. As you read on, you hold your breath wondering who it will be and when it will hit. I loved all the characters, and hated to leave their world. When a book can make you smile, cry and laugh, you know it's a winner. A must-read for Mansell fans!

Some story just hit you right in the feel.

This is one of it.

The story started off pretty slow because you have these characters who seem to have no connection with each other. And truly, there was none.

Until one fateful incident that change the lives of so many people.

It's been years since my last Jill Mansell novel. I forgot how much I love her and how her simple story has a lot of meanings.

Three Amazing Things About You made me laugh but it also made me cried. That is a sign of a good story in my book.

Hallie is living with Cystic Fibrosis. Living is not easy, she struggles to breathe, she needs a wheelchair and a constant supply of oxygen, she often has to bail out of socialising with friends and she knows that if she doesn't get a new pair of lungs soon that she probably won't be around for much longer.

Despite this, Hallie is an upbeat sort of girl. She dishes out advice via her website where she always asks people to let her know 'three amazing things about you'. The story opens as Hallie is travelling to hospital. She's about to receive new lungs, she's scared but excited.

The story skips back a little and the reader is introduced to the two other women who lead this story alongside Hallie. There's Flo; the bi-lingual graduate who works in a residential home, not because she can't find a job that she's qualified to do, but because she loves it there. Flo is the guardian of Jeremy the cat, much to the disgust of Lena who would like nothing better than for Jeremy to disappear. Lena is not impressed at all when her younger brother Zander and Flo start to get closer.

Tasha, or 'Bin Girl' as she becomes affectionately known as, and her new boyfriend Rory are head over heels in love. They are as different as chalk and cheese, with Rory climbing mountains and jumping out of planes whilst Tasha worries constantly about him.

Jill Mansell slowly unfurls the lives of these three women, she's created three adorable characters who are individual, warm and incredibly realistic. Alongside our main players, there is a cast of supporting characters who add depth and warmth to the story. I was especially taken by Rory's best friend Joe and one of Flo's 'old ladies', Margot.

Gradually, the lives of Hallie, Flo and Tasha will collide, and although it's clear to the reader that this will happen, the way that it does happen is unexpected, quite heart-breaking, but also pretty uplifting.

Three Amazing Things About You is three stories in one and although Hallie is desperately sick, this novel is in no way depressing or dark. Jill Mansell writes compassionately, with humour and warmth. Her characters are fabulous, the village setting is wonderful and the story, whilst dealing with a serious subject, is sure to delight her many fans.

For me, Jill Mansell's books are my literary version of cheese on toast, my go-to stories that never let me down - just like that oozy, delicious cheesy toast that always makes me feel better.

I absolutely love Jill Mansell. She has never written a book I don't like. Some have been 4 stars, some have been 5 and this is a 5. There is a more serious side to this novel, from a medical perspective, as well as a tugging at the heartstrings perspective, however there is plenty of frivolity for those who just like their chick lit to be chick lit. I did not see the ending coming and was delighted by it. I had wondered how all the characters fitted together and I confess to being confused now and again, even though I read the book in around a week. As usual the characters were very vivid and unusually for Jill there were several main characters, but she pulled it off well. I wanted to punch Zander's extremely selfish older sister, as well as give both Zander and Flo halos for putting up with her. Hallie was a treasure and Luke, well I quite fancied him myself! The tragedy in the novel happened quickly, but the ultimate goodness that came from it meant a heart-warming tale. This lady can't write fast enough for me! One of my favourite scenes was Flo and her elderly friends from the care home out for dinner, pretending their sons were called Tarquin and other equally posh names, when they were, by their own admission, as common as anything, and Lena, Zander's sister didn't believe them. Although I detested Lena, she was a fabulous character - one you'd definitely want to steer clear of, or swing for, in real life! The cameo of the homeless man was particularly poignant and the gift Rory left Tasha was the best ever. A beautiful book - may Ms. Mansell keep writing until she's 100! Highly recommend.

There are three engaging central characters in this story with a supporting cast who are equally as interesting, although not always likeable, grrrr to Zanders sister!

Hallie has Cystic Fybrosis and is madly in love with Luke, her doctor. Knowing he is off limits, she keeps her feelings to herself, dispensing advice instead as an agony aunt on her website 'Three things about you'.

Flo falls for Zander, but complications with his rather vile sister keep their relationship from running smoothly.

Tasha finds the man of her dreams, but can she keep up with his adventurous lifestyle?

I enjoyed this book from page one to the last. All of the characters had something to add to the story, and it was really refreshing to have a main character with a disability and to study things from her viewpoint. My favourite characters were without a doubt Rory and Tasha though. I could just imagine these two 'loved up' young people and the scenarios they found themselves in. The constant references to 'bin girl' had me smiling too.

I was beginning to wonder how all the cast would merge together, but they do and seamlessly as well. The latter part of the book is quite emotional, and I certainly had a lump in my throat at one point!

Jill Mansell does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life elevating this book above your average chick lit.

I loved this book I don't usually read romance novels but the story got me in & really enjoyed the read Jill Mansell takes the reader on a journey with her characters they are strong & very likable .

The story revolves around three romances set in three different countries Hallie who has CF is waiting on a lung transplant she falls in love with her doctor Luke but they don't know whether to take the relationship further.

She sets up a website helping people with their problems & ends up meeting Flo but they have not met yet. the story sets up the trial & tribulations of each character .

it made me laugh cry & was a really beautiful way the characters all came together.

Jill Mansell is at the top of her game in this genre

Namun sayangnya penyakit fibrosis sistik membatasi kehidupannya. Tokoh Tasha merupakan seorang make-up artitst.
