Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.

When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.

During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.

Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.

She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..

She also writes under the name Mikela Q. Chase

From the first page to the end of the story, this book is funny, filled with snazzy dialogue, and full of crazy events that can only happen in a supernatural world where the rules of life are just slightly different from what we’re used to in real life. The characters are hilarious, yet strong-willed and loyal at the same time. Fenris and Stanley together are the ideal couple to lead a pack, but few of the other people in the story seem to agree. What they hadn’t counted on is Fen’s utter devotion to make Stan happy, and Stan’s determination to protect Fen. A match made in werewolf heaven!

Stan is an accountant who likes to go jogging, which is when a surprise attack by a wolf leads to him changing careers. He has no idea what is going on around him once he wakes up after the bite, nor does he understand his suddenly rebellious body. But being who he is, he adjusts rather quickly and begins to make his own rules. His father had plans for him? Too bad, Stan is his own man!

Fen may not be considered to be a strong wolf, but he knows what he wants, and he doesn’t take orders from anyone. Well, maybe from Stanley on occasion, but even that is mostly for show. He has some weird family connections of his own, but his focus is Stanley and the pack. As the perfect alpha mate, he runs Stan’s life, and has great fun doing it.

The secondary characters also deserve a mention. From Paul, the irrepressible jester, to Stan’s mother, who has a black belt and is the only one who can keep her husband in line, they are wonderful additions to a great story. Stan’s father is something else, as is Fen’s dad, and the two of them have more in common than either would like to admit – much to my amusement.

If you like werewolf stories with a good deal of humor, yet everything a good werewolf tale needs, if you enjoy reading about men who have to redefine their world when they are bitten and can suddenly change into a wolf at will, and if you’re looking for a read that is funny, entertaining, and very hot, then you will probably like this novella. It’s a sparkling breath of fresh air in a world usually filled with supernatural angst and drama!

Original Blog Post: Review Request: Unexpected Alpha by Amber Kell

My Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Amber Kell is one of my go-to authors if I want a short, fast, light read involving two or more men and shape shifters. Her stories are romantic, action packed and highly entertaining. Unexpected Alpha gave me all that I needed and seeing this is a charity work, I close my eyes to whatever others may say and just recommend this.

Stanley is a great guy. He's an accountant, comes from a loving family and he loves to run. One such night of running gets him bitten by a dog, blacks out from his fatal wounds and wakes up to the most intriguing, beguiling and irresistible scent he could ever imagine. It helps the guy whose scent it is coming from is attractive and gay like he is.

Complication? He wakes up a were, his life is a lie, his emotions and behavior are erratic, and he's hungry for a man whom he declares to one and all as... yes! You guessed it right! MINE!

This is a very typical Kell read and no matter as the story is simple and the protagonists very familiar, it is still impossible to stop reading. For one thing, the descriptive text she uses makes it impossible not to visualize the actions of her characters. It also makes a big difference for the simple plot becomes impossible to ignore for action scenes can be quite breathtaking at times. For that alone, I salute her.

This was actually much better than I thought it would be. I don't think the blurb does it justice.
Stanley is an accountant who is attacked and bitten by a werewolf. He meets his mate the second he opens his eyes and it's totally lust at first sight. The book is basically the story of Stanley becoming alpha and adjusting to a world he spent know existed. .. even tho it seems his entire family was totally in on it. The patents in this story were pretty awesome btw. His mom is a black belt wielding Martha Stewart and his father is a Werewolf cop. Fenris, Stanley mate, comes from a major crime family who all happen to be very close and loving. Pretty hilarious. I'm hoping this will become a series bc Fenris BFF Paul is a major handful and I'd love to read abt his mating. His mate will have to be something else!

I never knew going running in the evening was so dangerous, but it is that simple release of energy which changes Stanley's whole life.
Attacked by what he believes to be a rapid dog, he wakes up in the home of his "mate", as he recovers he discovers he has been turned into a werewolf.
There are a few skeletons to come out of the closet before he can finally settle down to his new responsibilities, but, all comes good in the end.
An enjoyable short story, which has some potential to become a longer series, the characters have definition and Stanley's Father whilst mis-guided was someone I could relate to as a parent.
I appreciate that the proceeds are going to the autism society as my son also has the condition.

As usual this has first volume of a series written all over it.
It’s cute enough, accelerated storytelling as I’ve come to expect from this author. A nice read, if not too original or convincingly emotional. But I can appreciate the amusing bits.

If this ends up developing into a series I’ll definitely look at the next book.

This was a very entertaining read. Stanley is bitten by a vicious wolf and then he becomes a prime alpha wolf himself and finds his mate, Fen. I really appreciated the humor in this story and the romance was so sweet. I also enjoyed one of the secondary characters, Paul, because of his sass (he just couldn't help himself). The writing was well done and the story held my interest. Totally delightful. :D

3.8 stars for the editing mistakes which seem to be the bane of m/m romance.

Have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to read this from Amber Kell. Her plots are 90% of the time interesting but halfway through the book seem to lose some of their appeal, resulting in me barely giving them 3 stars (most time 2.8 stars rounding it to 3). But this one (like Blood Signs which is the book that keeps me coming back to read more of Kell's books) started great and finished great =D

**Grammar**

Stanley was living a quiet life till one day while jogging in the park, he gets attacked by a wolf and to defend himself he needs to kill it, but not after that the beast bites him on the neck. Stanley wakes up two weeks later in a stranger's house and doesnt know what happened to him. He sees a beautiful man, named Fenris, and the only thing he knows is that he wants to be near him. Fen and his friends, one of them being Paul and really annoying sometimes, explain to him that he killed their Alpha and that now he is the new Alpha.

To make this short.

Fenris feels the same pull towards Stanley, they are mates and soon end up having oral sex. We know that Stanley is gay, but we know nothing about Fenris previous experiences. Later that same day we see Stanley starting to call Fenris "his" and being really protective, but Fenris' friend tells him that he and Fen cant be mates if the mating isnt accepted by the Overseer (or something like that).

Guess who he is? Stanley's adoptive father. Stanley was the son of an Alpha primus (or prime dont remember),that died soon after his wife had died of childbirth, bcs he couldnt survive the pain of losing his mate. Stanley's father had been the most powerful Alpha in the last 1000 years and since the sons of said alphas primus were usually killed by other alphas that feared their powers, Stanley's adoptive father, his father best friend, had took the young cub with him and raised him as his own with his wife. Stanley cant believe that his adoptive father lied to him for all this time and he is schoked when he finds out that he was the one to send that crazy wolf in his path that night. He is now a wolf and is all his fault. Let's say that Stanley's adoptive mother wasnt happy when she found out that her husband put their son in arms way, also if that was something he had promised to his best friend.

One of the character I really didnt like was Sebastian the mate that Stan's adoptive father had chosen for him. The man litterally peed on Stan's things...gross.

In the end there is a battle, Sebastian tries to kill Stan but the other alpha is stronger and he wins. Sebastin submits but is only faking it and few minutes later tries to kill Stanley again, but this time the Overseer shoots him. Fenris was a good mate, he wasnt strong like his mate but he fought for them with words and later with his teeth, and now Stanley's adoptive father starts to understand that he was wrong, they are good together.

At the start the book was really interesting, but later it lost its spark and started to bore me a bit. I liked Fenris and Stanley and I enjoyed the scene where they finally make love, but I felt that we needed more feelings. There was a lot of growling but we needed more words. Fenris was smart and cute and was my favourite character. He knows how to talk to an Alpha and make him believe that he is doing what he wants but in the end he is doing only what Fen wants. Poor Stan he has you wrapped around his fingers XD

3.5 heart review by Tammy

Stanley Brown is a mild mannered accountant whose life is, kind of boring and quite regimented. He goes jogging at the same time almost every night and one of those nights he gets attacked by a huge wolf. Unbeknownst to Stanley he’s actually been “asleep” for two weeks while he has been changing into an alpha werewolf! Luckily the first person he sees, when he can stand to open his eyes, is Fenris Harven who has been looking after him while he’s been “sleeping”. Stanley can’t work out why he feels so possessive of Fen when he’s only just met him. Fen is the only one who can get Stanley to behave himself and not kill everyone he and his wolf see as a threat!

It turns out that Stanley’s adopted father is in fact the Overseer of the were community (he’s a badass!) who has taken it upon himself to arrange Stanley’s “change” but he’s also chosen a mate for him. Sebastian, an alpha from a different area is the chosen mate and he’s an ass! Thankfully Stanley and his mother sort both of them out because Stanley has fallen for, fixated and imprinted on Fen and nothing is going to change that. And no one is going to take Fen away from Stanley.

I must say that Stanley adjusted to the fact that his life had completely changed and he was now a werewolf, not any werewolf but an unusually strong Alpha werewolf! It does help that despite the meddling by his father his adopted parents are very loving and supportive. Having Fen for his mate is another bonus as he’s completely devoted to Stanley and leads him through his journey of discovery with not only love and understanding but humour as well.

Unexpected Alpha is only a short story but you get to have a good laugh at the antics of the characters’. You really can’t go wrong with an Amber Kell book! I would definitely recommend this book to all m/m, paranormal romance story readers.

Can you even imagine going for a run and ending up attacked by a maniac animal, followed by waking up with the sexiest man you’ve ever seen at your side, a man who makes you turn into a possessive GROWLING lunatic? Welcome to the world of Stanley, even tempered, mild mannered and apparently more Alpha than he ever would have imagined.

His rescuer, Fenris, is his mate and everyone better just respect that because Stanley isn’t in control of his wolfy nature yet. Pretty much only Fen can get Stanley to behave himself when he’s upset and Stanley has a lot to be upset about.

I have to admit – were I in Stanley’s position I definitely wouldn’t handle it with as much aplomb as he does. And when he finds out the backstory, well, he’s lucky his mom is there because dad is something else. That being said, I adored his mom. There is a fierce woman right there, able to put dad in his place. I wanted to smack dad more than a few times.

The Sebastian aspect (just ewww, dude) brought some twists and more than anything let us get a good look at Stanley’s mom. Yes!

I enjoyed this story for the characters but even more because it’s got a funny edge. “We can’t keep him. He’s not a stray dog that followed you home.” Yes, they are discussing Stanley right then. He’s no dog! “Stanley, drop my father.” That Fen, he’s calm and collected.

Paul, Fen’s friend and packmate, is a pest, loyal and wonderful. “No one picks on my alpha but me.”

I did question the challenge “law” because it didn’t make any sense. It did, however, give Stanley’s father a chance to redeem himself.

I thought this book was funny with a good pace and strong characters. The face that proceeds go to the Autism Society of Washington is a great bonus. Recommended.

Summary:

Who would think that going for a nighttime jog would change your life forever. Stanley woke up to a world gone mad as he found himself to only stronger. Stanley has always wanted men, but the first time he saw Fenris he couldn't understand why he was willing to fight anyone who so much looked at him the wrong way. Fenris knew that Stanley was his mate and he would do anything to help him find his way in their knew reality. As Stanley began to show traits that resemble his inner wolf it was fascinating how quickly he accepted and adapted to his new abilities with Fenris's help. I loved how Stanley's mother was human and average size, but all the men knew that when mad she was large and in charge. I hope that there is more yet to come in Stanley and Fenris's story.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

This isn’t your typical shifter tale. Yes, there are parts that are very familiar. But at the same time, there are little twists and turns that give it a new life I really appreciated.

Stanley is the kind of guy who likes to keep in shape, but hasn’t had much luck in the love department. So to watch him struggle to assimilate his instant attraction to Fen, and the way he slowly works through that gives him a layer I didn’t expect. I like Stanley, and I liked his growth. But at times I did find myself ever so slightly confused, and wishing I had a bit more from him.

Fen was definitely a more than meets the eye kind of character. At first, I was sure he was going to be weak and a pushover. But Fen is anything but. He’s a caretaker, and he has a strong backbone that shows through exactly when it’s needed. In fact, I liked that his more submissive personality only came out with Stanley. Of the two men, I think that Fen was a little better developed, and I felt he was a little easier to connect to. That being said, these two guys together worked incredibly well. The chemistry between them was just fantastic.

Stanley is minding his own business running in the park at night when he is attacked by what turns out to be a rapid alpha werewolf. So starts the journey for Stanley into the world of the paranormal. Lucky for him he is not alone as his new mate Fen is there to help him.

With a wacky cast of secondary characters and an annoying villain, this was an awesome little short. Stanley and Fen are just so cute together. They are a perfect match from the start. This was fast paced with off the wall dialogue, hilarious scenes, spicy sex, and a happy ending.

I can't help loving a book by Amber Kell. They always make me laugh and just enjoy reading them. This was no different. And really what more could you ask for, except maybe for more.

What an amusing, entertaining story. Not sure if the author was going for amusing but it made me smile, chuckle through most of it so there you go.
We have Stanley, an accountant on a nightly jog gets attacked by a wolf, wakes up two weeks later horny and confused. In the mean time Fen, the wolf that has helped heal him is the one thing Stanley wants and the one thing Stanley shouldn’t want.
Can I just say, Stanley and Fen together are wonderful! So sweet and funny. And Stanley and Paul FUNNY! Paul really does need a keeper. That whole crew, Stanley’s mother. what a protector. And Stanley, slowly learning his new role, but taking it very seriously and protecting everyone and fighting to the death. Job well done to pack such emotion and story line in only about 60 plus pages.

Too short for everything that was introduced. A few more chapters, or even a couple more plus an epilogue would have sufficed. I think I feel this way after almost all of Amber Kell's books. I don't enjoy feeling like something was missing or that I was just dumped off at the end wondering, "Wait...what?"

Fen is cute and a bit underhanded in his support for his alpha and mate, which is fine. Stanley is unsure yet confident and cutely clueless about things that he'll eventually learn about which is, again, fine. Stanley's dad is a good dude, his mom is wonderful, his in-laws are kind of unknown, his pack is as good as non-existent.

All of it together is fine and I liked it, but I also liked it for what I hoped it would have shown with a few more words on the page, well, a lot more than a few. So I'm torn between actually liking this book and wondering if I should have read it all.

First things first. Buy this book. Not because you love shifter stories. Not because you are an Amber Kell Fan. Buy this book to help support a worthy cause. It is $2.99, but Kell’s profits are going toward the Autism Society of Washington. If you don’t think your life has been touched by autism, you aren’t looking around. Just by reading this blog, you life has been touched. Just by reading in this genre, your life has been touched. For what it is worth, this review is based on a copy I purchased.

This is one of those unexpected great reads. I try to buy every book that contributes to a charity I support, but sadly not all of the books are worth a full read-through much less a re-read.

I enjoy Amber Kell's books, and would have bought this one either way, so I'm glad it is right up there with the best. It had just the right amount of serious subjects (parents, divorce, death) to offset all of the humor. This one is now at the top of my already crowded Amber Kell re-read list.

Stanley, Fen, and Paul are a riot, but Millie is a star. She just might be my favorite mom after my own. Here's hoping Paul, Sandy, Van, and Fen's mom (somehow missed her name, sorry) get a story too.

It has been a very long while since I read a book by Amber Kell, and unfortunately, this did not do it for me as I thought It would. It had the makings of a book of greatness but, lacked everything from character development, story development, also including plot. Short story that it is, eveything felt extremely rushed. There was no flow to it at all. It was Bam instant eveything and that doesn't do it for me long novel or short. no substance!

I will have to give this a 2.89 stars.

I liked this book. I am an avid reader and have read all of her books and follow her blog. I would like to see her make this a series and would like to see what happens after this book even if she made it a follow up blog story. I liked how the characters reacted to things that happened to them. It had a lot of funny parts to it and some sexual content but not overly done.

I read this as a blog story quite a while ago and have anticipated the release of the full charity version since. It definitely did not disappoint. Stanley and Fen are great MC's. There are some kickasss secondary characters but Stanley's Mum has to be the absolute best! It's a short story for an excellent cause and as I expect from Amber Kell, an Exceptional read.

This was a fun and funny bit of read. Fen is more than meets the eye, and Paul needs a mouth control. Stan, he confused me at first wake up. Acting like a whimpering pup but he's actually Mr. Badass. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to more following in this world.
