Wow! A really stunning debut romantic fantasy with intricate world building and compelling characters. I had a hard time putting this one down!
In this world, women are coveted for their purity and those who aren’t are marked and cursed. Raylane sees the injustices of these women and knows the best way for her to make a difference is through her marriage to the king. But one night ruins it all and now Raylane finds herself as one of the cursed. Sensing no other alternative, Raylane binds herself to the Goddess of Blood and Decay and enters into the Trial of the Bound. Survival doesn’t only mean her escape from living as a cursed woman but is also the key to changing the system that has caused so much harm.
As soon as I started this book, I was completely pulled into the story. The writing is easy to follow and the world is unique. The trials are interesting plus the stakes are high for the rest of the kingdom, women especially. War is on the horizon, not only with a neighboring kingdom, but with the gods themselves. I have an idea of where the story may go but am so curious to see how everything comes together.
I really love how bold and resilient Raylane is. It takes her a moment to accept her new fate but once she does she realizes that her magic can also be a gift. There are moments I felt frustrated with her but I also appreciated that she learned from her mistakes. The other characters are layered and interesting. Secrets and schemes constantly surround Raylane making it hard to know who to trust.
If you’re looking for an epic romantic fantasy then definitely read this!

If I could give this book 6, 7, 8…. 10 stars I would!! Just wow!! I was immediately hooked by the first chapter and could not put it down. I loved that this is based on the story of a female main character. The writing style is nicely executed and the storyline was amazing!! Of course with this being the start of a series, it does leave on a cliffhanger. But this book was wrapped up pretty nicely at the end while still leaving you with the anticipation of what’s to come due to a major turn of events.
My only question… When’s the next book!??

What an absolute whirlwind of a story. This book sat comfortably at a 4 or 4.5 star read for me the entire way through and then that ending happened and completely launched it into 5-star territory. I genuinely could not put it down.
I’m always a sucker for trials, hidden secrets, and morally gray characters, but this story delivered so much more than I expected. The FMC was an absolute force …feisty, sharp-tongued, stubborn, and impossible not to root for. And the male characters? Every single one kept me questioning their motives. I never fully knew who to trust, which made the tension incredibly addictive.
This book truly had a little bit of everything: suspense, romance, heartbreak, trauma, brutal battle scenes, gore, emotional depth, and nonstop intrigue. Every chapter felt like it raised the stakes higher and higher, and I devoured every second of it.
But the real standout was that ending. Twist after twist after twist …just when I thought I had things figured out, the story completely blindsided me in the best possible way. It was intense, exciting, emotional, and left me desperate for more. Easily one of the most satisfying endings I’ve read in a long time.

ARC Review
I absolutely devoured this book!!
The characters all so important and play roles that fit so perfectly. The world building was absolutely top tier!! I felt so immersed into this story it was beautiful.
Ray is the picture of strength. In a world where woman literally can’t do anything without essentially being branded with the Scarlett letter, She fights tooth and nail for what’s right and for herself. The betrayal she went through gutted me but she persevered! Ryker irritated me to my core but I’m holding out hope. Mael….ughhhhhhhhhh.
Kaelzar yes please! Their enemies to not quite lovers was beautiful. The slow burn was definitely slow burning and I can’t wait to see where their story goes in book 2!!
The ending felt right but also a slight cliffhanger either way it left me wanting more like right now please!!!

This was a mind-blowing debut with feminine rage, fallen gods, deadly trials, “who did this to you?”, broody MMC, badass FMC and excellent side characters. Masha is definitely going on the list of “authors who I will read anything they write “
Putting down this book was very difficult. It was full of actions, everything and every character had meaning and purpose in this story. I loved the Scarelt Letter retelling, it was so smart and powerful.
Raylane the FMC was amazing! I loved her so much! The way she stepped into her power and decided she won’t let anyone silence her anymore was so empowering! I am so excited for her in the next book! I hope she will kick lots of asses! In the world where literally every single men in her life let her down and tried to manipulate or silence her, gods know she is entitled for lots of ass kicking.
Kaezar the MMC was a broody shadow daddy with hidden agenda and secrets. He was smirky, strong, protective, supportive. Utter perfection! I can’t wait to see him again in book2!
The yearning and slow burn between them was perfectly written!
I loved the trials and there were even dragons! Marsha’s writing was captivating, kept me on edge the whole time and I felt devastated once I finished it, didn’t want to believe the ending. I needed more! Not sure how will I survive till book2 drops.

From start to finish, this darker romantasy had me hooked!
Our FMC becomes cursed with rot magic, after a kiss leads her touch to be deadly - now she is thrust into the deadly trials to try and not only redeem herself, but save other cursed women- with the reluctant help of a shadow beast.
Unique magic, world building, found family, dragons, trails, SLOW burn and tension- this had it all, but was still so unique and well done!
Highly recommend for any fantasy or romantasy lovers!

❤️ World Building: The world building was perfect. It was lush without being overwhelming. I suppose I personally don’t like when the world building is too detailed because I feel like it can drag the story down. This book did not have that problem. It gave you the atmosphere of the world and the things around characters, without over describing everything.
❤️ The Characters: Raylane is a really likeable character, she was stuck between a rock and a hard place, and I agree with her decision to try and get out of her situation. Ryker is her unofficial fiance and King, he is a quieter character in this book, even though he still has a major role. Mael is like a lot of younger brothers in these situations. Kaelzar is the Godbeast assigned to Raylane in her trials, but he is so much more than just that. I also loved the female friendships in this book, Eva and Peonica are what female friendships should be. Strong and unconditional love.
❤️ The Story: The story was just amazing! It was so moving, touching up some touch subjects about the way the world treats men and women differently when it comes to consequences of their actions. Things we still see in today's modern world. It was so moving and had all the feels!!!

I was lucky enough to be selected to receive an advance reading copy for Godbound by Masa Sova. This was a great novel and I enjoyed reading it!
The story follows Raylane. Raylane was on the path to be Queen of Calcatra with hopes to spark change for women, however, things take a turn for the worse when she is drugged and kissed again her will, and cursed with the Crimson teather, a very unique twist inspired by The Scarlet Letter. To avoid being shunned and hopefully reverse her curse from being forced unknowingly into a kiss against her will and also take back control of her life, Ray becomes a champion for the goddess Calista (not a good people loved) and is bound to her Godbeast, Kaelzar, to compete in trails to become the Archpriestest, ridding herself of the curse.
Overall I loved the pacing and world building of this novel. There wasn’t a slow part, and the whole story was so well written. I think there could have been more added to the relationship building between Kaelzar and Ray. It felt almost too much like an instant flip from forced allies to friends (or something more). It seemed a little forced, like they would have been just fine being good friends supporting each other through the trails, but the story wanted them to be more and it don’t feel 100% authentic. I’m hoping this relationship will be developed more in a future book, which I will definitely read. The author didn’t fail at exploring this relationship, I just felt it needed more to make it make sense. I usually read fantasy for the romance in it, but I genuinely flew through the pages of Godbound for the hope that Ray kindled in people to inspire change in a world so rooted in tradition and keeping women in their place.
I do recommend this book and I look forward to the next book! Thank you for the opportunity to read this early!

WOW WOW WOW!!! I was gifted this book as an ARC and I’m SO grateful to have been able to be an ARC reader for this masterpiece.
This book was incredibly beautiful. Our strong FMC, our morally gray MMC, selfish royalty and aristocracy, our band of feminist supporting characters made this book an easy 10/10.
I love how Masha used the romantacy genre to address important social justice issues head on in a poignant and provocative way that still kept you immersed in her own world.
I thought all the characters were so beautifully developed (even our villains). I was invested in literally everyone’s story!
I absolutely loved everything about this book.

Did I pique your interest? Because Godbound by Masha Sova was absolutely immaculate. The world-building in this story completely pulled me in from the very first page. In this world, women are cursed if they touch a man before marriage. Their hair turns red, and they gain the terrifying ability to decay living things around them.
Our FMC, Raylane, is destined to become the next Queen… until one devastating moment changes everything and leaves her cursed. To survive, she enters the deadly trials to become the next Archpriestess, competing under the Goddess of Decay alongside her own terrifying Godbeast.
And then there’s Kaelzar… her terrifying Godbeast and our MMC : the ultimate shadow daddy. 🖤 This man literally controls shadows and stores pieces of them to use as weapons and tools under his command. Add in his dark, tortured past, and I was DONE FOR.
The tension and yearning between Raylane and Kaelzar was absolute perfection. The reluctant allies -to-lovers dynamic delivered EVERYTHING I wanted, especially with the genuine hatred between them in the beginning. No spoilers though. 👀

The character growth in this book is immaculate. The last 20% kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it. I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2.
This was a breath of fresh air to fantasy, so if you’re looking for a HEA & no cliffhanger- this isn’t your book, but add it to your TBR anyways!

The world building is sublime. Women are very much persecuted and yet our FMC is feisty and will definitely stand up for those who can't. It's the perfect merge of world building and character development.

3.75⭐️ Great concept with lots of potential!
This book started out so strong! The storyline was unique, the characters were interesting and the writing immediately hits the ground running. Other than knowing it was inspired by The Scarlett Letter, I went in completely blind and truly had no idea which way this story would go.
Once the MMC enters the chat things start to get really fun and the banter is top notch. Their annoyance and disgust for one another is pretty dang strong which of course I ate up. The hateful things that they would say to each other were down right awful - I loved it.
Overall this would have been and definitely should have been a 6⭐️ read but this book was not without its faults.
Let’s start with the romance since that is why the majority of us picked this book up. I am all for a slow burn. I can handle the love interests not becoming lovers until later in the series. That is all fine and good, but I felt like there was just something missing with these two characters. It fizzles out before it ever really begins and then by the time the ending finally comes around the last 1/3 of the book feels like anything that might be between the two of them is completely one sided. Their relationship fell flat for me, I didn’t get the butterflies that you get from reading a really well written romance.
***Clean romance readers will be happy to hear there is no spice in this book outside of kissing (non-consensual and dubiously consensual).
My next issue was with the writing. There would be quotes in moments that felt like they were going to be really impactful but never quite landed. A lot of the time things felt a bit wordy and by the end of the book I was so ready to be done with the story.
The very ending was a bit underwhelming. I do see how we have a lot to look forward to with book two but again, the way it was written, it didn’t leave me wanting more. The concept/storyline is there but the writing was what was weighing it down.
Overall, I will still be recommending this book to friends. I see so much potential in this author and with just a few minor changes to her writing I think she could become an instant buy author for me.

This book is a great fantasy romance read for fans of The Hunger Games, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the Scarlet Letter. For those who love to root for the underdog and absolutely devour books with feminine rage, slow burn, deadly trials, forbidden desire, gods/goddesses, and betrayal, this book is right up your alley. Our FMC is brave and strong, working through her trauma and holding her head high while fighting back against an unfair circumstance in an unfair kingdom. This book is jam packed with action and romantic turmoil, with unforgettable characters and incredible world building, and twists that will leave you dumbfounded (and even enraged). This book is so unique from others I have read in this genre, and I absolutely ate it up! Stayed up late multiple nights because I could not stop turning the pages! This book had me frustrated and angry at times, swoony at others, and left on an absolute jaw dropping cliff hanger. The author wrote complex characters, an intriguing and thought-provoking plot, and a love story that will not easily be forgotten. Add this book to your TBR to see why Godbound is the next fantasy romance to sweep the genre!

Twisty, twisty, twisty and I was just along for the fun ride! There were plot turns I did not see coming left and right, and that ending had me squeezing my eyes shut and murmuring ‘noooooooo’ because I know I’ll be counting down days until book 2 releases. The magic in this book was so unique and the writing was well done. The trials were really good and of course I loved the dragons. Tension, betrayal, and angst were all present and I’m still not sure how I feel about some of the males…maybe they’ll do better in the next one. The FMC was really well done and I had her back from page one. I stayed up late AND woke up early to read this one because I couldn’t stop thinking about it and just had to know where it goes…and now I need more!

I requested this book because the premise of it sounded unique and different. And while some aspects of the book are typical, like trials and betrayal, the story as a whole felt very unique, different, and touching.
In the beginning I thought we were going one way and we quickly got whipped in another direction, in the best way, which made the story feel more unique. While there is romance in this book, the author did not rely on it to bring you a gripping story that made you want to continue reading. The conquest that our FMC is on, her journey, was what really made you want to continue reading. Would she conquer? Would she prevail and win and how? That’s what drew me in to this story. The romance was just folded in in the perfect way. And the MMC! 🤌🏽 All done with no spice (which I am not opposed to, but I very much appreciated in this story). I don’t know that I would call this a slow burn romance, but if you like a slow burn romance, I think you would appreciate this book!
When I got to the last few chapters I had to check if this was a series because I was scared I was going to get left on a cliff hanger. There were so many questions remaining and so little book left! This indeed is a series, but the way Masha wrapped this book up was done so well. She didn’t rely on a cliff hanger to leave you stunned and yearning for the next book. The book ended with the right balance of answered vs unanswered questions. I finished the book feeling both satisfied and excited for the next book release (hopefully we will not be waiting too long).
This book was just perfect! Down to the acknowledgements. And I hope Masha Sova and this book gets all the hype it deserves. ♥️

I’m in tears writing this review, no words or emotions I can say will do this book justice.
Godbound isn’t just a dark romantic fantasy it’s so much more, from the character development, plot structure to the rollercoaster of emotions you’ll have reading this. This book is perfection in every way.
The world is built on destruction and corruption amongst women. Any woman who has any sort of intimacy before marriage is cursed with blackened fingertips and streaks of red in their hair - most women have white hair so it’s easy to spot. If you are cursed, you are thrown away into a ‘camp’ I can describe it. You are whipped, chained, underfed, malnourished until your death bed. These are dark themes, and how the author writes, makes you feel immediately connected with what’s happening. To be honest I felt like I was there.
Our FMC Raylane, is in line to marry the prince, she grew up within the royal family, absolutely disgusted with the current affairs of her world and desires for change. But it’s hard to be listened to as a woman. Until one day the curse comes for her. Her character development was incredible, from chapter 1 thinking she was going to be a quiet idle wife to the future king, to then becoming the bad ass warrior she is, not caring or bowing down to men with power.
Once every 15 years or so a new archpriest/ archpriestess is appointed in the Godbound Trials. They are like I can describe a dictatorship, and unleash these rules set against women.
There is so much I want to write about this book I could probably write a dissertation again about it. It was incredible. The trials were so intense and unlike any other trials I’ve read before, so unique and constantly on the edge of your seat. The characters and the side characters became apart of my soul and oh my gosh the MMC Kaelzar, my heart. He is your book boyfriend of dreams (and another shadow daddy). His personality sold me from the first time he entered the page, his sarcastic, whitty humour had me laughing so hard. His past is so traumatic, yet he fights above and beyond.
The plot and overall story was one of the best books I’ve ever read. Yes there’s no spice but you don’t need spice to make a book amazing. The yearning and tension did that enough, and Christ was it hot. I want to live in this world forever.

♥️ Some books are good. Some books consume you.
♥️ This book was NEXT LEVEL and I’m honestly struggling to put into words just how much I loved it. Without a doubt, this is my favorite read of the month and very likely one of my top books of the year.
♥️ The feminine rage? Exquisite, and I am always here for it. The tension woven through Calcatra because of the Crimson Tether and the gods’ influence over everything? Painfully compelling.
♥️ Raylane’s growth throughout the trials made me so happy (in a vengeance sort of way?). I also adored the female friendships in this book because they brought warmth to such an intense story. And despite the heavier themes, there were moments that had me laughing out loud (the chicken dance… iykyk 😂).
♥️ This is one of those reviews where I feel like I can’t talk about my favorite moments or characters too much without spoiling something, but trust me when I say this book deserves the hype. And as a bonus, I FINALLY got to go back and read all the “present messages” in our buddy read chat after finishing 😭

What an epic adventure!!! Had me captivated right out the gate, the magic system was so unique and the trials!!! I absolutely loved it, now beware … the ending wrecked me… but I want more !

This was such a strong and impressive debut, and I’m genuinely excited to see where this author goes next.
The worldbuilding was absolutely stunning. It’s layered, immersive, and clearly crafted with a lot of care. From the gods and their champions to the trials and political structure, everything felt intentional and well thought out. The magic system in particular stood out as something really unique. It was a little confusing at first, especially with the godbound ties and the history of the Skyburn War, but by the end it all comes together in a way that feels rewarding and cohesive.
I also really loved the writing style. It had a very atmospheric and story telling quality that made it easy to get pulled into the story and stay there. I think the prose is incredibly well written.
Plot wise, this book really delivers. Watching Ray move through the trials and ultimately win the third one felt like such a satisfying buildup only for everything to unravel right before she’s crowned Archpriestess. The reveal of Kael’s ring, Calista’s ability to exist in a human body, and Peonicas decision to take the ring to protect Ray added so many layers of complexity to the story.
Ray severing the godbound tie and essentially breaking the system was such a powerful moment, even though it comes with huge consequences especially with Zyrel now positioned to rise. And then finding out that the previous Archpriest wasn’t killed by the gods, but actually confirmed he was murdered as part of a political plot that includes Mael is wild. That twist really reframes everything and adds a whole new level of intrigue going into the next book.
I also found the dynamic between Ray and Kael really fun. There’s a lot of tension there, especially once the truth comes out about what he knew and what he couldn’t tell her. Even though I understood his position, it still creates a painful rift between them, and Ray sending him away at the end felt like such an emotional turning point. I loved their banter together and some of the very witty remarks he made. I really can’t wait to see how he comes back in the next book.
As for Ray, I didn’t fully connect with her in every moment, but I was still able to appreciate her journey and the position she was placed in. She’s navigating impossible choices, power she doesn’t fully understand, and a system that becomes increasingly more complicated the more she uncovers. While some of her reactions didn’t always resonate with me, I found her overall arc compelling especially as she begins to question everything and shift from acceptance to actively challenging it. There were moments where I struggled a bit with how long it took her to fully accept and understand her magic, particularly her resistance to it. That said, the turning point with the fire when she finally recognizes that her rotting power can also be a form of saving felt meaningful, even if it came a little later than I expected. I did appreciate seeing her reach that realization and start to embrace what she’s capable of.
By the end, with Ray uncovering the political conspiracy, trying to figure out how to save Ryker, Kael gone, Calista now in a new body, and the mystery of the dragon still looming, it really feels like the story is just getting started.
Overall, this was a beautifully written, ambitious debut with a lot of moving pieces and a lot of potential. I’m definitely continuing the series.

She’s navigating impossible choices, power she doesn’t fully understand, and a system that becomes increasingly more complicated the more she uncovers. While some of her reactions didn’t always resonate with me, I found her overall arc compelling especially as she begins to question everything and shift from acceptance to actively challenging it. There were moments where I struggled a bit with how long it took her to fully accept and understand her magic, particularly her resistance to it. That said, the turning point with the fire when she finally recognizes that her rotting power can also be a form of saving felt meaningful, even if it came a little later than I expected. I did appreciate seeing her reach that realization and start to embrace what she’s capable of.
By the end, with Ray uncovering the political conspiracy, trying to figure out how to save Ryker, Kael gone, Calista now in a new body, and the mystery of the dragon still looming, it really feels like the story is just getting started.
Overall, this was a beautifully written, ambitious debut with a lot of moving pieces and a lot of potential. I’m definitely continuing the series.

Wow. Just… wow. This was a full-blown 6-star read.
From the very first page, Godbound had me in a chokehold and did not let go. The writing is immersive, sharp, and addictive in that “just one more chapter” way that turns into finishing the book at an unreasonable hour.
The world-building is rich without ever feeling overwhelming, and the pacing is relentless in the best way. Every trial, every layer of deception, and every revelation hits exactly right and keeps you questioning everything.
But the real star here is the FMC.
Her journey is raw, powerful, and deeply unfair in a way that makes you want to fight the universe on her behalf. She’s forced to navigate choices taken from her, decisions thrust upon her, and the ones she must make herself-all while carrying the weight of her people and humanity. Watching her grow into her strength felt earned in every sense.

Godbound Arc Review
“Let’s show them what real darkness looks like.”
I didn’t think I would like a fantasy reimagining of the Scarlett Letter until reading this book. It’s gritty, dark, and beautifully complex. We’re introduced to this unfair world, with a FMC that refuses to back down. The first page grips you, perfectly setting the tone of the story, while giving you a glimpse of Ray’s character. This isn’t just a story about revenge but it’s a story about revealing tightly kept secrets.
I loved Raylane’s journey. She transformed from a victim to a champion, unwilling to back down from her fight. Her backstory breaks my heart, but it never broke her spirit to help the oppressed and to stand up for what’s right. My favorite part is how she turned what people called her into unbreakable armor. From her red lips, to red nails she is a force to be reckoned with, and I loved every second of it.
Ray’s friends Eva and Peonica brought a much needed warmth to this story. These girls never left Ray’s side and brought a whole new meaning to loyalty and sisterhood. Now I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about Kaelzar, but I do need to give him props for every romantic gesture he gave Ray. The tension between those two was so palpable… I loved it. As for Mael and Ryker, I’ve got nothing nice to say. Except Masha did a fantastic job of painting their true tarnished personalities.
While it took a little bit for the story to pick up the pace, it never lost traction after Ray claiming Callisto. I loved the twist, turns and betrayals, I never knew what was going to happen next. Ray using a whip as her weapon was perfection. The weapon used to humiliate others is now used to protect the victims. The last trial had me on the edge of my seat, the tension was perfectly written, and the imagery alone was breathtaking. The ending was a perfect set up for the sequel, it leaves you with plenty of possibilities, and excitement for what will happen next.
I can’t wait to read what Masha will write next. When you read this book you can tell how much heart she put into it. The character development and story building made this story unique and a refreshing addition to the romantasy genre. This book will leave an impression on you for the good. I can’t recommend this enough to add to your TBR, thank you Masha for letting me arc read this fantastic novel.

I enjoyed this one. I flew through it pretty quickly and the pacing kept me hooked most of the way through, especially once the trials properly kick in.
Raylane is living under a system where purity is power and anything outside of that is punished, so her entire existence is shaped by control and expectation. Being thrown into the Trial of the Bound forces her into survival mode whether she’s ready or not.
“I’m no longer someone pretending to be powerful. I am powerful because I choose to be.”
I did struggle a bit with Raylane’s decision-making at times. It takes her a while to fully step into her power and accept what she is capable of, which slowed things down for me in places.
That said, there’s a strong thread of feminine rage running through the story, especially as she starts to push back against everything she’s been forced into.
“In public, he’s loyal and fiercely protective. But in private, he’s nothing but cold, distant, and a hateful thorn lodged in my spine.”
Kaelzar fits that very classic morally grey, trauma-heavy protector role. Their dynamic stays firmly in reluctant allies territory, with a slow burn building underneath all the tension and distrust.
“But Kaelzar is the one who struck the match. Now I carry the fire.”
The worldbuilding leans into religious control, curses, and how power is shaped by belief and fear. It adds a lot of weight to the trials and the way Raylane is treated within the system.
“Here, I’m not someone’s daughter or someone’s bride. I’m someone I chose to be.”
The ending lands well and very clearly sets things up for what comes next. It leaves you wanting the next book without feeling like nothing was resolved.

Finally was able to finish my ARC read. A solid 4.5 and a truly impressive debut. Masha has a gift for being able to weave a dark fantasy. This is definitely a series for folks who love world-building and deep political intrigue/politics. This book is SO rich with fantasy, deep emotions, near-impossible odds, so much betrayal and heartbreak. The world she has built is BRUTAL, there is nothing cutesy about it. It’s unforgiving to women specifically as well which is very metaphorical for what women deal with in general.
This story is very light on actual romance and it ends on a cliffhanger. I have lots of questions. Some of which I’m afraid to have the answers to lmao.
Given that this book explores a lot of intense, and at times, dark themes, please make sure you are aware of the content warnings. This is truly a dark fantasy series and it lives up to this.

This was such a strong debut. I was hooked from the first chapter and never lost interest.
The writing was incredibly immersive, making it easy to disappear into the story. The world felt fresh and unique, and I loved uncovering more about it as the book went on. It never felt like an info dump. Everything unfolded naturally.
Raylane was a fantastic FMC. She was determined, compassionate, and easy to root for, even when she was thrown into impossible situations. I also loved the MMC. The slow build between them had me completely invested, and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes next.
Between the characters, the world building, and the high stakes trials, this was one of those books that kept me turning pages. That ending has me counting down until book two.

If you’re in the mood for deadly trials, betrayal, yearning, and dragons, then you need to pick this one up.
Ray lives in a kingdom built on purity, and watching her stand up for women who have been wronged was one of my favorite parts of the story. Her journey is emotional, frustrating, and inspiring all at once.
The magic was easy to follow and beautifully described, and I loved how accessible the worldbuilding felt from the very beginning.
And yes, there are dragons. Need I say more?.

I'm honestly not quite sure how to feel about this one..
The plot seemed great but I feel like there were a lot of holes and at times things just didn't add up.. sometimes I'd kinda just be like how did we get here you know?
The pacing also seemed very fast to me, like we were just being told the story on high speed or something so I was confused and lost a lot of the story, primarily in the first half.
I did enjoy the characters, although I would've liked to see more from the side characters just a little bit.

I devoured this book! And it made me so angry in all the best ways. I’m deep in my feminine rage era right now, and this book FED me with all the rage. 🔥 I was immediately hooked from the start of this one, and it just kept getting better and better throughout the story.
The world building was phenomenal, and we got all the lore with the gods, goddesses, and the Trial of the Bound. We also got - curses, forbidden desire, reluctant allies to lovers, a delicious slow burn, intrigue, betrayals, “who did this to you”, a unique magic system, and so much more!
Calcatra is a cruel world built to serve the patriarchy and ruled by fear and religion. This is not a world where you’d want to live as a woman, and my heart broke the entire book for the women and girls in this story.
Our FMC Raylane starts this book out with everything. She’s set to marry King Ryker, and then she can work to enact real change for the women of Calcatra. All she has to do is remain pure until their wedding. But all it takes is a kiss she doesn’t even remember to derail all the plans for her future. She awakes the morning after drinking with her future brother-in-law as the newest victim of the Crimson Tether curse, and her life is instantly turned upside down because of it.
Raylane hopes to absolve her sins by entering the Trial of the Bound, and she finds herself bound to a godbeast to help her win the trials. While every other contestant is bound to a dragon, Raylane is bound to Kaelzar. He’s brooding, mysterious, and a little snarky. He also instantly nicknames her Trouble, and I’m a sucker for a nickname!
This story was full of morally grey characters with secrets galore. There was suspense, trauma, brutal trials, layers of intrigue, twists and turns, plenty of rage inducing moments, characters with true emotional depth and amazing character growth, and heartbreaking betrayals. In short, the plot was most definitely plotting.

Raylane x Kaelzar
Well, I've read a fair amount of romantasy making me quite difficult to please, so I went into this book having no expectations whatsoever, but that caught me off guard!
Even if it did have some classic romantasy elements (trials, broody MMC), I can only describe the feeling I had reading this book as reading something unique.
Dark magic of shadows, blood & decay, the female rage, bleeding for your people, fighting for change, lost hopes and betrayals, beasts and gods.
The writing hooked me, and even if the pacing might been a bit slow, I never felt bored.
The romance was not the core of the book for me, but she is the Master and he's her devoted beast, and he YEARNS. It was very well done. He also has a very interesting backstory.
The plot didn't feel predictable, wasn't quite sure what was going to happen until the very end.
I just can't believe this was a debut honestly, very impressed !
I didn't give this 5 stars because I'm not fond of god stories that much, but if you do definetely check this out !
