Violent Grip: A MM Mafia Dark Romance of Mutual Obsession

Rate this book
He was famous enough to fill arenas... but he only cared about impressing one man.

GRIFFIN

I am MMA's golden boy. The one-armed champion nobody expected to survive, let alone dominate.

Alexei Malakov made me.

The billionaire sponsor who paid for my career, controlled my future, and built an empire powerful enough to bury anyone who crossed him.

Everyone knows my name.

Alexei knows the rest.

We've lived in each other's pockets for years, long enough to know exactly how to get under his skin. Long enough to forget where his life ends, and mine begins.

For years, I treated his rules like a challenge. For years, he treated me like an investment.

Then his enemies came for his throne. And an obsessed fan decided he'd do anything to have me.

Now people are dying.

The line between possession and obsession is disappearing. And the most dangerous man I've ever met is looking at me like something that belongs to him.

The world thinks Alexei owns an empire.

They're wrong.

He only cares about keeping me.

The author says in the foreword that this book can be read as a standalone even though the couple was featured in another book. I have to disagree.

Maybe this was my bad reading comprehension, but I took that to mean they were side characters elsewhere. Nope. There is a whole-ass previous book that covers their entire origin story. Reading this without that context definitely changes your perspective on the characters and their relationship, so if this is your first Quinn Corin book, I’d honestly recommend putting this one down and starting with book one, Violent Possession.

Another thing you miss is you don’t read the first book is getting a bit more back story on Angelica, alexie’s stepmother. She was a complex character but not entirely awful which I have to call out whenever I see a female character in an mm romance who isn’t horrible. My only complaint is that she sort of faded out during the last third of the story. The plot didn’t necessarily need her anymore, but I think she deserved a more intentional exit instead of quietly disappearing from the page.

Thankfully, this book leans much more heavily into the romance than the first one. Even more importantly…there is lube. 😂 There still isn’t a ton of steam, but what’s here is much better executed than in the previous book (a very low bar, I know, and I promise I’ll stop bringing that up after this).

Overall, I think Quinn Corin is a writer who’s clearly growing from book to book. The writing is improving, the romance is stronger, and it feels like they’re honing their craft as they go. I always enjoy seeing an indie author find their footing, and while this wasn’t a standout read for me, it definitely left me optimistic about where the series—and the author—are headed.

Oh, the cover is awful. I know he had intentionally bad hair, but no way Griffin looked like a washed up acid rock star from the 90s. First cover with Alexie was much better.

This author deserves so much more recognition. I'm a huuuuuge mafia reader and it's been a long time since I read one that didn't feel like the same generic plot.

The writing felt incredibly fresh, and I was completely immersed in the characters' heads and emotions.
