3 Estrellitas. Ha estado bien, pero no me ha encantado. Hace tiempo que no he leía a Jaclyn Reding, y en su momento la serie "Blanca" me gustó mucho. Sólo me quedaban estos dos libros y no sé si ha publicado mucho más o las editoriales han pasado de ella.
"Juego de apariencias" es el primer libro de la serie Highland Heroes y en él tenemos una historia muy típica que nos recordará a los tiempos de "Forastera".
Es el año 1746. Elizabeth Drayton es la hija mayor del duque de Sudeleigh, descendiente directo de la dinastía Tudor. Elizabeth es una mujer adelantada a su tiempo, es inteligente, culta y está segura de que no quiere casarse; no quiere ser una posesión de su esposo y aboga por su soltería, su libertad y su independencia para poder publicar panfletos sobre los derechos de las mujeres.
Pero un día a Elizabeth le salen mal las cosas y su padre, muy conservador, lo descubre. El duque está harto de sus travesuras y le ordena viajar a Escocia para casarse con un amigo suyo. No llegarán a su destino, una vez su carruaje cruza la frontera, éste queda encallado en el barro y los ayudará un misterioso escocés que pasaba por allí.
Douglas MacKinnon vuelve de Londres hacia su isla natal de Skye completamente desbastado. Escocia e Inglaterra acaban de pasar por una guerra. Él no apoyó abiertamente la rebelión, y por ello viajó a Londres para pedirle al rey que le devolviera las tierras y el título de su familia. Pero su viaje resultó infructuoso, pues no fue recibido en la corte.
Una vez cruza la frontera, Douglas se encuentra un carruaje atrapado y ayudará a las ocupantes del mismo a salir y llegar a la próxima posada.
Douglas y Elizabeth se conocerán en ése momento y es obvio que hay atracción entre ellos; pero lo cierto es que ninguno busca nada del otro. Inexplicablemente, pues creo sinceramente que la autora descarriló mucho con unas cuántas escenas de éste libro, Douglas y Elizabeth despiertan juntos en la cama de ella al día siguiente, y de ahí sólo habrá una solución: el matrimonio.
Elizabeth vuelve a casa con su flamante y rudo esposo escocés, al que no conoce de nada, pero que pudo ser su salvación para no casarse con el amigo de su padre. Como es lógico, el duque no está contento, y le ofrece un trato a Douglas: hará que el matrimonio se anule e intercederá por él con el rey para devolverle su título y bienes, a cambio de que se lleve un par de meses a su hija, a Skye y envararla para que se le quite tanta tontería (o eso es lo que viene a contar), siempre y cuando no se consume el matrimonio.
Douglas no desvelará en ningún momento ante Elizabeth que en realidad es conde y tiene un castillo, así lo dispuso el padre de ella. De modo que Elizabeth parte engañada pensando que se ha casado con un granjero escocés. El viaje será largo y penoso y la granja no es ni mucho menos tan cómoda como Elizabeth esperaba, pero es capaz de aguantar todo eso y más, con tan de alcanzar su ansiada libertad en dos meses.
Con lo que no contaban los protagonistas, es con que se iban a enamorar, y durante la trama habrá una serie de contratiempos que harán que lo suyo sea difícil.
Lo más positivo de éste libro es lo bien escrito que está y que me ha encantado Elizabeth. Pero al libro en sí le falla algo, y es que hay ciertas escenas, momentos o situaciones que no me he creído. Una de ellas la del principio cuando despiertan juntos, y mucho más adelante cuando se declaran su amor. ¿Cuándo se han enamorado estos dos?
El libro es bastante cortito, y una vez llegan a Skye ya has pasado más de la mitad de la novela y ocurre todo muy rápido, por ello me ha costando creerme o entender muchas de las cosas que aquí pasan.
La autora se ha ceñido a muchos actos reales, pero me ha descolocado que tras Culloden el protagonista venga de Inglaterra vestido como un highlander, cuando tras la derrota escocesa la vestimenta tradicional fue prohibida. Licencia de autora, imagino. A las lectoras nos encantan las novelas de muchachotes con faldas.
Vamos, que ha sido un sí, pero no. El libro en el fondo está bien, se deja leer, pero han sido unas simples y simpáticas tres estrellitas. Como tengo el siguiente libro, el de la hermana de Elizabeth, Isabella (vaya con la inventiva de la escritora para los nombres), lo acabaré leyendo, y por lo menos pido que al igual que éste entretenga.

Novela ambientada en la época georgiana, justo después de la batalla de Culloden. La primera parte de la novela, en la que conocemos a la protagonista y a su familia, me pareció encantadora. La segunda parte, sin embargo, se me hizo cuesta arriba en algunas ocasiones. Está ambientada en Escocia y el protagonista masculino, un Highlander, cobra mayor peso. Esta segunda parte está aderezada por las intrigas políticas entre clanes y narra la historia de amor entre los dos protagonistas, que me pareció relatada de un modo demasiado rápido y apresurado, sin mucha pasión entre ellos. El final también es rápido y predecible. En suma es una novela entretenida que decae un poco hacia la mitad.

If you like 'Taming of the Shrew', mostly likely you'll enjoy this. The female is no shrew, but she is a bit self-involved. She is also intelligent and probably a bit bored with her role in life. She sees the double standard between the genders and sets about opening the eyes of others to the problem. To avoid scandal, she keeps her name secret, but as secrets do, it is discovered and her father, the Duke, is outraged. She is sent off in disgrace. Series of events ensue and a scandal broth erupts. A poor man is caught in the middle of it, through no fault of his own. To share more would spoil the delight of discovery for others. Suffice it to say, the author has skillfully woven historical fact and fiction into a enjoyable, taut, well written story. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series of which this is the first.

I really liked this book. It was written really well and took me into the story and the characters. I liked the self-discovery and learning, I liked the determination of the female lead, and all the characters. The sisters make me wish I had a family like that. I liked the mother-in-law too. She was great. I would definitely read this book again. I would put it on my shelf to stay. There was some humor and some great moments of confusion/mischief. Enjoy

This is a new to me author. I am a fan of historical romance and this is a fine example of the genre.
Elizabeth is the eldest daughter of a very important Duke of the Realm. She is his favorite. She is also the one who drives him mad. She is just like him.
When she goes one step too far, he promises her in marriage to an older man. But, on the way to her future, she runs into a Scot, Douglas. He tells her he is a simple farmer. He is not absolutely truthful about himself.
Because of an error in judgment, the two of them are compromised. Elizabeth’s father makes a deal with Douglas. If they can stay married but do not have marital relations for three months, the marriage can be annulled. Elizabeth would become a wealthy single woman and would never be forced to marry. Douglas can get his family’s lands returned to them and he will again be the Earl he should be.
This plot is well done. There are events happening on a regular basis which keeps things moving The story provides a window into every day life for the reader. But, there is also intrigue, history and mystery.
Elizabeth is a strong and intelligent young woman. But, she is also her own worst enemy. She would rather prove she is right than anything else. That is what gets her into a great deal of trouble. But, it also provides her with great adventures. She loves her family, and all her younger sisters and will miss them when she moves to Scotland.
Douglas has a huge number of responsibilities. He has felt his burden of being grown up for a very long time. He is trying to save his clan. He is trying to keep anyone in his family from being captured by the British. The British army has gone through Scotland burning, raping, killing and pillaging. This book illustrates the complete lack of empathy in the British mind set at the time this story is set.
The book also has humor and charm and warmth. The story was fun to read.
It is evident the author has done her homework and worked hard to produce a story which tells about life in the period right after the Scottish defeat at Culloden. The reader gets reminders of how difficult life could be so very long ago.

Entertaining romantic book, with the Jacobite rebellion in the background, and history woven into the story. Elizabeth, the eldest of 5 daughters of a duke, is the most stubborn and energetic of the bunch. When her father sends her off to marry, she soon returns married…. to the wrong man.
The Scottish highlander Douglas she met on the way to her indented, was more or less forced to marry Elizabeth, and her father makes him an offer he can't refuse. He just has to stay married to Elisabeth a little longer and pretend to be someone or something else
Together they return to Skye, his homestead, where she gets to know a completely different life, inventively adapts to the life of a Scottish farmer's wife and becomes involved in the flight of the throne pretender Charles Stuart.
In terms of content, the story has potential: action, romance, humor and drama, I just didn't find it convincingly executed. I found the beginning slow, when Elizabeth and Douglas meet, the chemistry between Elizabeth and Douglas unconvincing, the structure not well worked out in the and the ending, the epilogue, rushed. The writing style is accessible and there were good descriptions in between. For example, I liked the description of how Elizabeth's family came to be, the nature descriptions, when Douglas shows Elizabeth what there is to do on Skye, and of course the goat.
The goat is a favorite of mine. All in all, a story with potential, which as far as I'm concerned has not fully yet achieved it, but has the promise of a nice series.3.5 stars

A well researched historical romance.
So, which pretender does the title refer to? After reading and thoroughly enjoying The Pretender, I am not really sure. Regardless, I loved this book.
Well written, and with complex characters, Jaclyn Reding's tale had me completely absorbed from start to delicious finish. The plot twists, drama and even humor brought to life historical events as the author deftly wove them into a riveting tale that is first and foremost a love story between Douglas and Elizabeth. What started as a tense agreement, ends as a HEA. By the sweet epilogue, I was smiling and sighing. On to the next book by this talented author.
Content 411: This book contains some very mild swearing and a couple of tastefully described marital bedroom scenes. There is also a possible trigger in the attempted rape by a criminal.

The Wild English Rose and a Bonnie Prince:
A new author for me. She seems to write with a very flowery descriptive flare.
An upside-down story that turned out to be a solid and enjoyable love story filled with interesting characters.
For the most part I loved Douglas through the entire story. At first Elizabeth not so much but she came through with exceptional courage and I loved her feisty no nonsense dealing with the ones that crossed her which even included Douglas at one point.
The more I read the better the story got. The epilogue brought much happiness and joy to a rewarding conclusion.
I would be glad to read another story from this author.

Special mention: The Goat was a side character to enjoy.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I am duly impressed. She gives just enough description to be able to visualize what you are reading without boring the pants off of you. I loved Elizabeth’s mischievous demeanor and how Daddy finally had enough to teach her a lesson. I laughed at her attempts to do things she has never done, the cow, especially! The goat was a hoot and her attempts at staying dry were ingenious! Douglas was well written, and I could almost imagine the “deer in the headlights” look he got when he realized what he truly was saddled with. Having real history wrapped in this story made it extra special and I will definitely be reading other books of this author.

I loved this story of Elizabeth and Douglas!
Elizabeth takes after her namesake-Queen Elizabeth. She’s independent and headstrong. So when she learns the punishment for her public assertion of independence she decides she can manipulate it in her favor. Unfortunately, she finds herself tied to a common cattle driver from Scotland.
Douglas is not what he appears. But due to an agreement with Elizabeth’s father he must keep up the charade. And keep himself from falling in love.
Their story includes a Jacobite rebellion as the backdrop. The author does a good job weaving actual history into their story. A great read!.

There's nothing more magical than chance meeting that leads to love. Elizabeth is am intelligent woman ahead of her time; feminist and a vocal bluestocking to boot. Add in a handsome Scot, a lost title, prince on the run, a wiley goat, and a ruthless Jacobite hunt by Cumberland, Ana you have a recipe for a delicious Highland tale. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I!

Well this was a surprise! Good story, well paced, character growth.. and a little fun banter.
Almost didn’t read on around 25% in, as it was so slow and not impressing ..
Decided to give it a chance and wads rewarded with a pretty straight forward story - somewhat believable even 😊
I think I’m at like 4.5~4.7 for originality and for the very important goat 😎
ETA: Not a steamy book! But read it any way 😁

nice read
A very enjoyable read. It had everything from romance and intrigue along with some history of those terrible times between England and Scotland. I’m the end we have a hea after quite a bit of misunderstanding and problems to overcome

Head strong woman, meets Scottish clansman.
Good story of a forced marriage, that turns out right. Also of the history of Scottish Prince Charles Edward Stuart and how that war ended and the " United Kingdom" was born.

Es una historia que se me ha pasado muy rápido. Bien escrita, original, buenos personajes. Me ha gustado mucho la familia de ella que a pesar de ser muy aristocrática está muy unida y el padre tiene los pies en el suelo. El protagonista escocés también muy bueno. Bonita historia.

Satisfying story
I enjoyed the story however it did contain some explicit sex scenes . therefore the deduction of the one star.

It was okay. Pacing felt all over the place and it seemed like the story couldn’t figure out who the villain would be.

La AME…después de leerme aquella novela de despecho en inmadurez, esta novelita era todo lo que mi corazoncito decepcionado necesitaba para recuperar mi fe en el género de romance histórico. Es una historia apasionada, graciosa y muy entretenida. Los personajes de esta novela son perfectos. Desde los protas hasta los secundarios. Elizabeth es exactamente como la describen sus familiares y sus acciones. Deja su vida acomodada para irse a vivir a una granja, y tener como principal acompañante a una cabra muy graciosa. Es valiente, arriesgada, decidida y no le da temor decir lo que piensa (si, ya sé que los cuatro adjetivos son similares, pero es que la otra novela me dejo medio traumada jaja). Douglas por otra parte…OMG!!! QUE HOMBRE. Es un noble de ensueño. El tipo se arriesga a perderlo todo solo por amor!!! Aunque al inicio no es muy honesto y cree lo peor de Elizabeth, no tiene miedo de expresar lo que siente…y como siente!!! ¿Y en las escenas eróticas? Ayy mi corazón…me mataron jaja. Ame esta novela, y aunque no tiene mucha acción o momentos muy MUY jaja fue una felicidad leer algo sin tanto drama, desamor o engaños. Otro punto a su favor, es que contiene muchos detalles históricos (algunos reales y otros de ficción) y eso me gustó mucho, pues asi pude conocer más de la vida de los highlands de estos años. Super-recomendada.

Es una novela bastante bonita, es lo primero que leo de esta autora y me ha gustado bastante, con una narrativa impecable nos va presentado a la familia de nuestra heroína Elizabeth que resulta una familia entrañable. La novela transcurre en el siglo XVIII, en concreto en 1746 justo después de la batalla de Culloden, y como no nuestro protagonista es un Highlander. La historia de amor está adornada por los acontecimientos posteriores a la célebre batalla. Así que es una novela ambientada en la época Georgiana, anterior a la Regencia, época de pelucas, empolvados, y varones con coleta, una maravilla para mí porque es mi época favorita y no hay mucho publicado en castellano de esta época. Aunque tengo que decir que como la gran parte del libro está situada en Escocia esa moda ni se nota.
El último tercio del libro me ha parecido que se aceleraba, como si la autora se hubiera cansado de la trama y quisiera acabarlo, la verdad es que la historia de amor daba para que el protagonista se esforzara en reconquistarla pero... rápido, rápido, ese contratiempo fue sorteado por la escritora en un santiamén. Es por esa razón que le doy una valoración un poco menor de lo que estaba dispuesta a darle en la mitad de la obra.

Una novela histórica en la que se diferencian dos partes: la primera transcurre en la mansión de un noble inglés y es deliciosa; la segunda nos traslada a Escocia y a un momento concreto de la lucha de los jacobitas y, aunque su calidad narrativa es indiscutible, creo que la trama romántica pierde peso frente a los hechos históricos que avanzan con ella. Personalmente me ha gustado mucho, pero solo la recomendaría a las lectoras que disfrutan con la romántica de subgénero histórico. pues la relación de la pareja protagonista queda un poco diluida. Aún así, tanto él como ella son personajes que te conquistan desde la primera página, así como la mayoría de secundarios. El padre y la madre de ella me han parecido excepcionales.

Sencilla, amena, en algunos momentos divertida, romántica y muy entretenida novela de época, con una trama ingeniosa y un desenlace lógico. Fantástica inclusión de momentos históricos reales en la historia.
Realmente son 3,5 estrellas. Está bien escrita y no tiene fallos aparentes, pero se me ha hecho demasiado corta, y me hubiera gustado un poco más de desarrollo en la historia para conocer todavía mejor a Douglas y Elizabeth.
Si te apetece pasar un buen rato leyendo, es muy recomendable.

Una historia corta y sencilla, pero que necesitaba.
En general me gustó mucho, los personajes, el romance y como la autora nos da un poco de contexto sobre la guerra entre Inglaterra y Escocia en tiempos de Estuardo y su fuga.
El desarrollo está bien en relación al romance y como los protagonistas van superando su nueva relación accidental, sin duda te da momentos que te emocionan; incluso con un final que te deja satisfecha con toques de drama, tensión y romance.
Lo recomiendo si buscan algo ligero para pasar el rato.
