Deadly Sins #1

Fighting Envy

Some people get a tattoo - a piece of art that enhances or reveals something about them that they like. Other people, like me, are branded by something - actions or words. "No one will ever love you, Rowan, you're not worthy." Those are the words that created my blemish, my scar, my mark upon my soul. They were words whispered by the woman who should have loved me most. But in the darkest moment of my life, one where I stood abandoned and alone, one man proved to me that she was wrong.

When I desperately needed someone, MMA fighter Jackson Stone crashed into my life. He wasn't the one who should have been there, but he was exactly the person I needed He believed that only fools live in the past. He showed me that a real relationship is full of dreams, faith, trust and passion. He taught me that love is worth fighting for - even when it's unexpected and more of a collision of hearts and souls. He proved that the wrong man at the right moment can heal everything.

“In my experience, no one ever does something without wanting something in return.”

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎
Character development: ☹️🙃☺️🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Rowan - Rowan grew up with her twin brother, Tyson in the home of her abusive single mother who constantly berated them, especially Rowan. Their mother was left by their father when he found out she was pregnant and she blamed the kids. She constantly told Rowan that she, like all the women in their family, was unworthy of love and no man would ever stay with her. Rowan and Tyson were determined to leave the day they turned eighteen.

The Hero: Jax - He grew up with his father and grandfather. His father was always angry and never happy. His grandfather owned a gym where Jax and his friends trained for MMA fighting and when he died, he left the Gym to Jax. Jax kept his father on at the gym because of his connections, and he was the one that scheduled all the MMA fights for the fighters at the gym. Though he always berated Jax and sponsored one of his friends instead of Jax. He always scheduled Jax against the toughest fighters, while he scheduled the other guy against fighters he could easily win.

The Story: Rowan and Tyson were able to leave their mothers home in California. They moved to the Phoenix area and live together in an apartment. Rowan had a boyfriend Jason who she thought would stick by her when she was pregnant, but when the day came for her to have the baby, he drives her to the hospital and takes off, not answering her phone calls after that.

Jax is in the hospital at the same time, for some stitches on a cut he got while sparring with a friend. He ends up helping Rowan out and they become friends. Though both of them have issues they are dealing with and both come from terrible backgrounds. Jax has been romantically interested in Rowan since he first saw her.

This book is told in dual points of view via dual narration. It was narrated by George Wickham and Angela Moore. George is a good narrator and puts a lot of feeling into his voice, but I would like a deeper voice for a muscular MMA fighter. Angela’s voice matches Rowan perfectly. She is soft spoken with a very feminine voice and she embodies the girl with low self esteem to a T.

I liked the fact that Jax had his own issues with his Dad, but he was able to talk openly about them and he draws Rowan out slowly by getting her to talk about her mother and the things she would shout at Rowan and how she struggles with that. Jax is also so great with Rowan’s daughter Lily. It is always good to see a man who isn’t afraid to change a diaper or take the kid even when the mother is around.

3.5 stars but I will not round up for some plot devices that I hate. upon re read, I just skipped the parts I hated. Enjoyed it more!

Overall this was a great hero. He was kind, sweet, patient, possessive. I mean he went out and bought a bouncy seat and toys on the off chance she came by his gym to visit him with her baby! I about died from the sweetness that is Jax. If you read for no other reason, he and his relationship with her baby is awesome.

Even though they were together in about the same number of pages of other romances, it felt like a slow build. She was in a VERY bad place when they met. He behaved like a hero in more ways than one. But then she slammed the door in his face, literally and figuratively. I understood why, postpartum depression. He, of course, did not. He still found a way to help her out. That was really sweet and I am thrilled this did not cause problems with them later.

During the first 30-40% of this book I struggled with the heroine. But I kept reminding myself that she just had a baby after being dumped at the emergency room by baby daddy boyfriend. I probably would be a bit freaked out just from that alone, not to mention her history and her brother being thrown in jail.

I was impressed when they finally had a date. I thought she would be insecure and keep up the push/pull. She was not and did not. I liked that she enjoyed herself, wanted him and was excited by him. He deserved it!

The baby daddy made a reappearance towards the end quite by accident. For most of their interactions, I was impressed by her reactions. This could easily have been yet another terrible plot device (rethinking her relationship) but thank goodness the author did NOT go there! There was some tension though. The Hero was rightfully anxious and upset. I thought he could have reacted a little better. But in the end (within a day) they both get their shit together.

There is a large group of MMA friends that clearly are a set up for future books that I certainly want to read.

While I marked my score because of the spoiler items, I would not let them prevent you from reading the book unless you have a zero tolerance level. Frankly the spoiler about the heroine was much worse to me than what the hero briefly recalled.

I did however hate that it ended so suddenly as a HFN without an epilogue. I want more closure!

Safe zone : There is one not safe part in this book... before they have any sort of relationship. They barely even know each other and he's trying to move on because she rejects him. He was a crush.. and worries about the baby. He quickly learns he's not gonna be able to move on and is hard core after her from then on.

Review to come.. but until then.

Jax was phenomenal and I'm so glad I gave this book the chance it deserved. Some personal issues.. more than one greatly affected my love for this book. made it stronger. .. most importantly.. blood does not make family. Love does.

After reading a really questionable book, this one was exactly what I was looking for!

I absolutely loved the storyline and the characters were even better. The secondary characters were pretty damn awesome too. I didn't want it to end...

Looking forward to the next book in the series :D

I have had Fighting Envy on my want to read list for the last 2 years and finally picked it up while it was free. Now I am wishing I read it sooner. It was really good. It doesn't have any OTT drama but just the right amount to keep you turning the pages. Jax the hero is amazing. He is so sweet and protective and I loved how he was with Rowan and her daughter Lily. Definitely recommend.

This was rather quick, but moderately paced drama story about a man fighting for the family he accidentaly became a part of, meeting love of such proportions that he never expected to feel nor he had known until then...or maybe it was destiny from the start...

and a young woman fighting against her bad experience from a heavy childhood upbringing with an uncaring mother and fighting the insecurities of feeling unworthy of love...giving or receiving...

"A relationship is full of love, faith, trust, passion, dreams and understanding. You and me? We have that in spades. But sometimes there will be disagreements, misunderstandings and uncertainties and that’s okay. It’s those other things that will help us get through them. You’re right. We’re beautiful and it’s perfect.”

Loved the characters.
and there are fighters, six of them...so it's too be expected to see each of them with their own story...

I was surprised by this one. I did not read the blurb beforehand so I did not know that it involved a single mother. Those are hard to pull off but Jennifer Miller did an amazing job. The story was compelling and heart moving. This is the first in this new series and I can't wait to read the next one.

RECENSIONE QUI: https://thereadingslove.blogspot.com/...

description

What a 5 star read! I woke up out of a dead sleep at 3 am to read this book and I'm so glad that I did!

I instantly fell in love with Jax. I absolutely hated Jason. From the start, something is off with him and I couldn't place it. The moment he drops Rowan off at the hospital and never shows up, I hated his guts.
Enter in Jax! It takes an amazing man to sit in the hospital with a stranger and want to make sure that person is okay. Even after she was discharged from the hospital, she was his first priority. He took the time to make Rowan fall in love with him. The way Jax and the guys looked after Lily, made me fall in love with them!

I cannot wait until the second book because I did not get enough of these two!

"He hands me a paper and a pen from his desk and surprises me when he takes Lily from me. “Hi sweet girl, wanna play in your bouncer while I go through an order? Do you?” His baby talk is adorable. “Are you sure you want to keep her in here? I can bring her and her bouncer with me.” “She’s fine.” He kisses me on my cheek and walks to her seat to buckle her in. He keeps smiling and talking to her the whole time and my heart lurches. I love him. I am in love with this man. The thought hits me like a freight train, but it makes complete sense. He has completely taken over my heart and clearly that of my daughters given the way she’s taken to him. She greets him with squeals when he comes over and reaches for him to hold her. Standing there with the realization that I’m in love makes me immobile."

Senza infamia e senza lode. Irritante.
La scena iniziale dell'incontro è surreale:

Fighting Envy could be a four star, but it needs some substantial editing. I fell for the fighters the series features, all rough around the edges but putty in the hands of the heroine's little girl. It's what every woman wants, isn't it?*

The trouble is the execution. I really hope that you take me seriously Ms Miller when I recommend that you get this edited. There are grammatical errors and lots of them - you're/your, their/there/they're, lets/let's, can/could, adjective/adverb, lose/loose, that/than, fighter's/fighters, refrained/restrained... Particular focus is needed on apostrophe and comma placement.

Beyond technical errors, there are also inconsistencies: Lily wearing a pink hat in the hospital when Rowan didn't know what gender baby she was having; Rowan claiming to not have had adult interaction when she is a waitress**; one finger described as fingers***; an instance in which it is probably Rowan feeding Lily carrots, not "Lily... spits out the carrots Lily's feeding her" and so on.

And thirdly, the speech becomes more and more awkward/stilted as the book goes on. The protagonists grow mentally/emotionally, which is great n'all, except conversations that were initially a bit clunky begin to sound like they were lifted from some motivational speaker, writing on what it means to be well-adjusted. I'm no expert Ms Miller, but why not find yourself a willing partner and read the conversations back and forth between you? That should help you judge more accurately whether the words you're putting in your characters' mouths really sound natural. Think "would I actually say it like this?" Remember, native speakers are lazy. They use contractions, abbreviations and slang. They use filler words and broadly converse informally.

I liked the characters' journey, most especially their realisation that family is so much more than just blood. It deserves to be refined and allowed to truly shine.

*Stereotypically, anyway.
** I'm going to try not to comment on those sometimes strange individuals known as customers!
*** It's probably best for the sake of decorum that I not give context for this one.

Fighting Envy is book One in the "A Deadly Sins' Series, by Jennifer Miller. This is the story of Rowan Martin and Jackson 'Jax' Stone. Rowan was raised by her abusive mother who always told her brother and her that they were unlovable and that no one would want them. Although Ty and Rowan are twins it was hard making it with such a mother. Rowan in the present day is pregnant having contractions when her boyfriend drops her off at the hospital and doesn't come back. Jax after a boxing round needs stitches and goes to the hospital where he ends up helping Rowan. Jax heart goes out to her being alone but there is something more that he feels too that is making him stay.
Jax is just the best...he stepped in to heal Rowan's heart and was there for her daughter. Just loved their story and will be hunting down more books by this author!!

I very much enjoyed this book. It centers around heroine Rowan who is ditched at the ER in labor with her boyfriend, well now ex boyfriend's baby. She sits and waits and waits and waits for him to come inside but he doesn't. When a huge contraction hits and she knows she cat wait any longer she tries to stand and in doing so catches the eye of a sexy stranger. Enter our hero, Jackson Stone.

He doesn't know why but he feels something different with her. Soon she is pulling him along to maternity ward and he follows, his cut stitched up. When he asks to call someone for her and her reply is I have no one he feels in his soul he will stay and be what she needs. He watches in awe at he strength as she delivers a beautiful, precious baby girl.

There are many obstacles for them to overcome. Her post partum, her past, his father, her fears. But whenever he is needed he is there and soon her walls start to crumble and she sees that he may be different and that maybe she is worthy of someone so good.

4.5 Stars GREAT!

First book by this author for me and I loved it:) Jax, was oh my gosh, just simply perfect and the way he treated Rowan and Lily and I mean right off the bat was just absolutely beautiful and heartwarming!!!!! I cannot wait to read everyone else's stories because what a GREAT secondary cast of characters!!!!! Now my only complaint and albeit a minor one, I am an Epilogue person so I am assuming since there was no epilogue in this book it is because each story will continue to grow as the series grows.... At least that is my hope because I loved the ending but am nervous about Jason and what will happen in the future, lol!!!! I selfishly also want so much more for these 2 beautiful individuals too!!!!!! Max and Rowan deserve to the moon and back:)

Congrats Jennifer Miller, awesome job!!!!!!

3.5 Baby Talk Stars

Is there anything hotter than a cute guy with a baby? I think not.

Rowan and her twin brother had a terrible mother. She not only blamed them for her troubles but did so often and loudly. She planted those tapes of self-doubt in Rowan's head.

Rowan, not surprisingly, makes some bad choices in guys. Now she finds herself pregnant and abandonded. Lucky for her, it's hot guy night at the ER.

Jax is an MMA fighter, gym owner and all around great guy. He steps up and steps in. But Rowan is not ready for help. She needs it, but she is not ready to accept it.

Jax is A-Adorable. His buddies are great and I can't wait to read the next one. Bring on more MMA cuties.

3.5 Stars This was a cute read I really enjoyed it. Alpha male with a heart of gold meets down on her luck new mother. It was really funny the H/h both had fun personalities lots of LOL moments. If you are looking for a alpha book that is sweet, funny, sexy, and has a bit of insta love this is right up your alley. Looking forward Tyson's story he has some anger issues he needs to work through.

All of the other guys in the book were hilarious I am assuming we might get a book for each.

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

This is the story of a girl(Rowan), who cried a river while birthing a girl...and cuz she looked so sad and lonely there...this one guy(Jackson) thinks he loves her and then they smile.

(Did you sing the song?)

Anywho, this was basically a semi-entertaining tale of insta-love. The way the romance first started in this book was comical at best. I did find it very fascinating in comparison to the birth of a child. When you first see your child, adopted or maternal, there is oftenan insta-love of sorts. It seemed as though that was what thr author was getting it...I am not quite sure though.

The great part about this book was the consistancy in this story. After the initial love at firsy cry, there seemed to be a genuine build of chemistry between Roean and Jackson. However I had a hard time getting attached to the characters because of how the story took off.
