I was born and raised in Joliet, IL. I wrote my first story in the 3rd grade and fell in love with creating my own world. But throughout the years I have lacked the discipline to actually sit down and write. Even with a minor in Creative Writing (which should have been my major).
I have been a avid romance novel reader since Jr. High and have read hundreds. I have lived in Chicago, Japan, California and now reside in Arizona. And I wanted nothing more than to combine my love of romance, writing and traveling and put them in a book.
So one day out of the blue while in the middle of reading another book, the story that I had started months ago kept bombarding my every thought. Until I couldn't even continue to read the book I was in the middle of. I put down my Nook and picked up my laptop and about fifteen days later, I had finished my first draft of my manuscript. It was the most exhilarating moment of my life. To know that I finally did it. That I finally finished something that I had started. And now I'm and AUTHOR and PUBLISHER! I never would have thought that was possible three months ago. I just hope that everyone that picks up any of the books I write from here on out, enjoy them as much as I did writing them.

This basically picked up where the first book left off. Sloan and Lexi trying to work through their issues and her crazy ex lurking in the background. They battled a lot to be together in this book. Everything from Sloan's PTSD to some conniving people plotting to split them up. Sloan was still a real sweetheart, but one thing he did just really irked me. I was looking at him like
 photo 13919391_zpsxcub66f9.gif
Lexi got over it pretty quickly, but I did not. It seemed out of character for him and their relationship. Lexi still had her moments of weakness, but she grew a lot and I liked that she was more vulnerable at times in this book.
The sex was still hottttttt and there was a decent amount of drama going on between their careers blossoming and the ex doing one crazy thing after another.

OH MY SWEET BABY JESUS!

Another 6* read!

This 2nd installment follow up, was off the chain intriguing. Scary as hell. Passionate, erotic, & with heartfelt emotion. I loved it!

So many things occurred here that broke my heart, but also allowed it to soar. Sloan? I promise this man's soul, just so many things about him puts me in the mind of my husband. It's unsettling just how much they mirror one another.

And Lexi? My goodness. I love her. She's a warrior. Definitely. A fighter. She has grown in leaps & bounds since book 1. You saw the transition in book 1 as well, but in this book, you see the fruits of that growth. I couldn't be more proud of her.

I love this book. I love this trilogy thus far, and I can't wait to dive into the final book. The way this one ended had me like this though...

So yes, I HIGHLY recommend this trilogy.

***SOME SPOILERS***

Twyla Turner is a master at descriptive passages. The way this author skillfully begins each book in the Damaged Souls series is one of the reasons why I continue to follow this serial. I truly enjoy how Twyla Turner immediately opens with a dramatic flair along with the way she creatively levels off the tension just to build it back up all over again. Like in book 1 Scarred, the opening sequence is graphic, emotionally charged, and grabs hold of you to the point of no return. You may want to stop reading but you just cannot. I love how the opening passages in both the Damaged Souls series are insights to the characters past traumas which lead to the current effects of characters lives and psyche.

Open Wounds doesn’t readily pick up where Scarred left off but rather starts with a nightmare Lexi is having about her parents causing old wounds to resurface, hence title. Let me be clear though, the title is no way solely indicative of Lexi but also incorporates Sloan as well. Open Wounds is the story of how new couple Lexi and Sloan’s relationship and careers are progressing all while an unknown entity lurks in the background waiting for the right time to change Lexi’s smile to a frown, thus effecting Sloan as well.

There are many things I liked about the Damaged Souls series from the steamy yet passionate sex scenes, to characters who try and come in between the MCs, and ultimately how Lexi and Sloan help support one another through their PTSD issues which the reader will see manifests in different ways. The reader will see how Lexi’s nightmare affects Sloan’s PTSD and what event brings Lexi to self mutilation. Because both couple deals with PTSD it made me think, "is this couple going to survive?"

I love Sloan. He has the whole alpha, protective, yet humbly swoon worthy thing going on and down pack. I mean who wouldn’t love to date a former homeless military vet who happens to be a southern gentleman and a great cook? Yeah, he has some issues but who doesn’t? I enjoyed reading about the silent challenge between Sloan and Aaron in chapter 6... like I just said Sloan is all alpha and Lexi is his. At any rate, no matter what Sloan is faced with he is always there to help Lexi with her issues.

It was Sloan who explained to Lexi she has PTSD and also taught her self-defense moves after an incident occurred in Lexi’s kitchen leaving her scarred, shaken, and bloodied in the bathroom.
description

With Lexi now armed with new moves to protect herself, the couple turns their attention back to their relationship and budding careers. Because of the way Scarred ended, even though Lexi and Sloan appeared to be good I knew danger was on its way and anxiously awaited for the other shoe to drop. Sure enough dread reared its ugly head: Tank was poisoned, Lexi’s car was vandalized, & the house broken in to. Lets just say the writing on the wall said it all and prompted Sloan to call the police, and purchase/teach Lexi how to use a gun.

As I anxiously awaited the climax, I didn’t realize I was holding my breath as I read the passages where Lexi called her best friend Bianca to learn she was beat so badly by Lexi’s ex she ended in a coma, then received a phone call from officers to be told her ex is M.I.A., all while danger was outside her front steps where a fiery glow was blazing in her driveway.

When the threat against Lexi subsided , I have so say I was feeling some type of way. I don’t know if sad would be an accurate word to describe my feelings but I felt like if there’s now no danger where was the storyline going to go as so much of the story is centered around Lexi and her experience with domestic abuse. The feeling quickly passed as Twyla Turner once again gave me another jaw dropping cliffhanger.

Open Wounds is a great follow up to Scarred. It's a story rich in a damaged couples love who together learn to deal with the open wounds of the past and present. Open Wounds gets 4.5 stars upgraded to 5 for being so freaking good. I eagerly look forward to reading book 3, Healed.

***ARC GIVEN IN EXCHANGE FOR HONEST REVIEW***

Note: This is Book 2 in the Damaged Souls series. It picks right up where book 1 Scarred leaves off. I strongly suggest you read Scarred first to get the history of Sloan and Lexi and to understand the context of certain situations.

This series isn’t called Damaged Souls for nothing. Sloan Stryker and Alexis “Lexi” Bolden are two social misfits who fit perfectly together and were made for one another. What drew me to the series and what keeps me coming back for more is the realness that the author has injected into these characters. Sloan and Lexi are not your cookie-cutter romance hero and heroine. They are beyond 3-dimentional, and it’s always refreshing to read about people who aren’t “perfect” by society’s standards. Sloan is the former homeless vet who is physically scarred while Lexi is the talented artist who is emotionally scarred. Together they are perfect. They lean on one another to overcome past hurts, and it’s not an easy road. We witness the struggle, and it’s ongoing. There is no quick fix, but we also see that although it’s not a magical cure, love really can heal.

In this installment, Lexi’s past catches up with her and threatens the happiness she’s finally found with Sloan, while Sloan is becoming the man he’s always wanted to be-confident, independent, and the hero that Lexi needs in her life cause Lord knows that woman has gone through some thangs! With Sloan’s love and encouragement, Lexi is learning to hold her head a little higher and emerge from the shell she’s created because of past relationships. We witness setbacks from them both, but we also see how they work through the obstacles without sacrificing the bond that they’re continually strengthening. They are constantly tested, but they are making it work!

This is not the end of the saga. Ms. Turner tortures us with an OMG cliffhanger that promises to make book 3 all the more anticipatory (and I take it on good authority that the finale is dropping before month’s end). I am rooting so hard for Sloan and Lexi, and once you immerse yourself into this series, you will too! Great story. Click it up!

Part 2 of Lexi and Sloan's story did not disappoint. I felt like I was watching a thriller on TV and I was waiting for the monster (Eric) to put in his appearance at any moment to ruin the lives of this beautiful damaged couple.

Well he did show up but you will have to read the book to find out what happens to him.

I did not like either Aaron or Victoria minor characters in the story. I was so happy when Lexi held her own against the bitchiness of Victoria.

Just when I thought it was safe to breath an existing demon rears its head and puts our couple's relationship back in jeopardy. Now I will have to read book 3 to see how they overcome this last obstacle to their future happiness!

I found the story totally engrossing a real page turner.

No more souls being damaged!

It's always good to see the underdog come up, to see this couple that both been to hell and back. They both have PTSD and try and help the other overcome it together. Lexie is still hiding for her ex, and he want stop at nothing to make her life miserable. Sloan is a V.A. and now restore houses, and life is looking good to him. He's back on is feet and he has a woman that he loves more then life itself, but he want stop at nothing to keep Lexie safe. Damaged souls no more!

Sloan and Lexi- BRAB ONLINE BOOK CLUB

The saga continues with this damaged but beautiful couple. You can't help but fall in love with them and be drawn emotionally into their struggles.

Sloan's life has taken a major change since he and Lexi met. His renovation of her house has thrown him into the spotlight. Lexi's life has also shown vast improvement and her artistic career has gained momentum. But as in their life, there is always something dangerous lingering around the corner.

This story is a page turner and very emotional. I am anxiously awaiting the next book.

A good continuation from book 1

This book is a short continuation of what began between Alexis and Sloan in Scarred.

This book was filled with a lot of ups and downs! Alexis and Sloan's lives are starting to really turn around for the best. She's an artist, and her local friendships are starting to pay off as more and more people start to notice how good she is. Sloan's past is starting to be a benefit to his current self as he begins working as a contractor much like he did with Alexis. Their future's look less bleak and they're starting to envision an HEA that's attainable.

Both Alexis and Sloan's pasts are ugly and hurtful, and soon enough those things start to catch up to them. This book ends on such a heavy yet hopeful note, and I'm eager to see how this author wraps up their romance in book 3.

Open Wounds was really good. I didn't know if it could get better than part 1 of the series, but it did. I really liked the thrills in this one. I'm so glad exciting and better things are happening to Solane and Lexi, they deserve it. I'm really not fond of Aaron at all, and I can already tell the new character introduced, Victoria is going to be a real witch. Lexi's best friend mom really upset me with what she said to Lexi, it was unfair to her. Everything that happened in the ending had my nerves bad. I can wait to start the next part. Great job

Wow!! That. ending. 😳

This was much better than book 1. Just when I was wondering why there would be a book 3, that ending happened and WTF!!

This poor couple can’t catch a break and yet their love continues to strengthen.

Now I’m on pins and needles ready to dive into book 3 and see how this concludes. I can’t see them being successful without therapy. Plus I’m curious on what happens with Victoria and Aaron... there’s has to be more drama involving those two.

Twyla Turner you clever clever woman- you did it again.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read part 2 and 3. Heavy topics and triggers-read the very detailed warning the author gives but also know there is love found at the strangest time in each character's life but when they needed it the most. The story continues and Lexi and Sloan must accept the good that has come in their lives but work on growing as a couple while recovering from their PTSD and traumas together and separately to become a stronger team and couple. They have a lot of past ties and threats threatening to keep them apart.

Oooh Baby

This ain't even the final book. Sloane and Alexis are having to fight major demons and impediments, but they care one of the strongest couples so far. I know they belong together, now that their lives are on an upward track, I hoped it doesn't get too much in the way of them remaining together.
I actually like the Character, Aaron. I hope he finds someone.
This book had it all, love, sex, deceit, intrigue and a lot of danger.
An excellent read.

I don't how she did it but Book #2 in this series is even better or more detailed and thrilling than book #1. In this book, Lexi and Sloan's relationship, careers, quirks and enemies are all revealed and taken up a few hundred notches. This book is sexy, heartbreaking and triumphant. I cheered for Lexi and I cried for Lexi. I cheered for Sloan and I cried for Sloan. Great book and a can't miss. Book three is a real wild ride so get ready.

I read Twyla Turner‘s ‘Scarred’ and ‘Open Wounds’ (Damaged Souls Series) back to back – reading ‘Open Wounds’ in just one sitting! Previously, I’d read a short story of Ms. Turner’s in a Valentine’s Anthology put out by Kinklectic – so I knew the Damaged Souls Series would be steamy, and she didn’t disappoint! Other than that, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was hooked on the originality of the premise though.

The Damaged Souls Series features characters that most of society would be more than happy to sweep under a carpet and pretend did not exist – that is until you look underneath the surface of things and find out that there is a lot more to people than meets the eye, and that the old adage ‘you can’t always judge a book by its cover’ is never more apparent than when an author with some ingenuity and imagination forces you to see people in a different light, by employing some highly creative character development.

Lexi is someone society (wrongly) teaches us doesn’t matter, just another big girl with an extremely tough past. Ms. Turner refuses to let us see her that way; she shows us that a woman’s worth cannot be determined by the size of her frame, and that what makes a person worthy and deserving of love is not their physical attributes, but their willingness to give love to others, and their ability to open themselves up enough to receive it in return. These are important, and positive lessons that tend to get buried in the superficiality of today’s culture. Ms. Turner manages to deliver them despite the dark themes incorporated into her work.

I love the idea of Sloan. When Lexi first meets Sloan, he is a bum – one of the most marginalized and overlooked members of our society. One of the people most of us would refuse to give a second glance to as we walked by (on the opposite side of the street). Yet we find out that he is an American hero; someone who served our country, in the thick of battle, for nearly a decade, but who had to be discharged after being wounded. Sloan suffers from PTSD and has a very difficult time reacclimating and reassimilating to routine life back in the U.S.

Lexi sees something in Sloan from the beginning, refusing to let society dictate her behavior towards the man. She gives him a chance when no one else would. The first book in the series ‘Scarred’ focuses on the backgrounds of both Lexi and Sloan, and the formation of their friendship and beyond, while the second installment ‘Open Wounds’ takes a more external approach. We see more characters brought into Lexi and Sloan’s story. We see how pressure from the outside impacts their fledgling relationship and a whole lot more… It’s a wild ride, full of unexpected, yet alluring curves and turns. If you enjoy the underdogs getting a chance to shine their light, and a story that isn’t afraid to delve into dark subject matter to unearth that light, then you will enjoy the Damaged Souls Series.

Sloan & Lexi are back on Twyla Turner’s much anticipated sequel Open Wounds. If you haven’t read book one yet I suggest you do. This book takes place where the last book left off almost like the next scene or day later. When I tell you that this author can write a soul touching book trust you will not be disappointed.

Lexi goodness I don’t even know where to begin her character is so complex. She is struggling with some very emotional issues. i.e. her last relationship was abusive and the demons of her traumatic and haunting past. Here is the low down her father was abusive toward her mother and one day killed the mother and then himself all in front of a young Lexi. (Don’t worry readers I didn’t give anything away this book is so deep that that little tidbit is just the tip of the iceberg) Dealing with all of that she had to endure it’s no wonder she has a hard time opening a heart to love and just life.

Now on to Sloan! He is just what some would call a book boyfriend. Now don’t get me wrong he is a man with problems such as ptsd. He is an ex-soldier struggling like Lexi to find happiness. But it doesn’t come easy for either of them. Threats and secrets from the past come to the surface in this sequel can these two find their happily ever after?

This book is such an emotional read full of deception, and just raw emotion. The reader gets a real look into these two issues like Lexi’s issues with self-mutilation when she feels threatened or goes into a dark place. I can’t even begin to describe all that this book has touched on just that you should definitely one click. And the way this books ends!!! Goodness. All I know is that the author has stated she will not keep us waiting long for the next book. One thing that I did have an issue with was the grammar issues in this book but the story is so striking that I overlooked a lot of it. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.

“Open Wounds” is the continuing story of Alexis and Sloan and is the second book in the “Damaged Souls” series.

I love the realism of this series. The path to healing isn’t smooth. There are bumps along the way just like life, and Ms. Turner depicts that perfectly in Book 2. Although their professional lives are improving, Sloan and Alexis are still coming to grips with their individual PTSD, as well as their own insecurity in their relationship.

Alexis is reluctant to give all of herself to Sloan, because of the pain from her past. Sloan loves her so much and tries to tell her not only with his words, but with his body, and with his actions. He is insecure about his scar and because of his lack of money. He wants to be the man to care for her, protect her, and provide for her. He wants to become his own man, get back on his feet and be someone that she can believe in and be proud of. Sloan is so strong and loving, and yet so vulnerable. He really needed that verbal reassurance of her love. Her denying him of that hurt him a lot. How could you not be screaming on the rooftops that you are in love with him? As much as I love Alexis, I confess she ticked me off a little with that. LOL.

And the love scenes… Oh my goodness….. I need a Sloan in my life!!!! <3

“Open Wounds” is a great follow-up to “Scarred”. Definitely a must-read! :)

This is another great story of an amazing writer who truly ruminate her romantic thoughts into this book. Her writing definitely have a unique and impressive style to it. It is inspiring and succinct which displays the struggles, qualm, hopes and dreams of the characters. There are some books that consume your thoughts, your mind and resonate with you for days; which is exactly how this series makes me feel. There are so many things that go on in this book and the author writing displayed enthusiasm and confidence to allow her writing to flows smoothly with each and every move administered about each characters. This is the contining story of Alexis and Sloan as they support each other through their PTSD issues. There are so much emotional, loving and deception at time from outsider. Again Sloan showed nothing but love and admiration for Alexis and the SEX was HAWT!!!!!!! This is the kind of book you read it takes your breath away. It was a great read. The characters were very good in the storyline. The way it did go suprised me. No shock but unexpected. I really liked the twist and turns. Again, KUDOS to the author!!!!

Bummed at the end

I was ready and willing to give this beautiful, and tragic, love story 5 stars, but, come on... this is not the HEA I personally gotta have in order to have complete satisfaction when I complete the story. This story had every thing else. Realistic and engaging dialogue, likable and charming characters. A sexual relationship between the two main characters that jumped off the page. The writer put so much alpha male sexuality into the H that you really wish you could be on the receiving end of all that love and devotion. Lordy!! Anyway, I was shocked and disappointed at the ending. Not only as a recovering sufferer of PTSD, but also a lover of romance novels where everybody gets their happily ever after. I suggest it as a excellent read in- spite of the ending. Not everyone has to have the unrealistic ideal that all endings are perfect. So read and enjoy a well written, engrossing, sexy romance novel if that's you.
