Fatima Aisha does something rare with this book. She makes you feel the weight of a family before she ever shows you it breaking. Set against the warm, complicated backdrop of Houston, TEMPTATIONS™: Raheim Part I centers on a young man who has quietly appointed himself the keeper of everyone else's peace, and the story wastes no time making you understand exactly why that kind of selfless loyalty is both a gift and a slow erosion.
Where Aisha truly excels is in her emotional architecture. The plot moves through crisis after crisis, from Malik's drug stash landing young Bookeem in the hospital, to Denise's reconnection with her ex Tai, to a jaw-dropping family revelation that reframes everything that came before but none of it ever feels like spectacle. Each event is a pressure point that reveals character. You learn who these people really are not through what they say about themselves but through how they unravel when the stakes get high enough.
Raheim himself is one of the more genuinely compelling protagonists in contemporary urban fiction. He is not written as a hero. Set in Houston, this urban drama follows Raheim, the oldest sibling who’s always trying to keep everyone together while quietly carrying the weight of everyone else’s problems.
From the outside, things seem normal, but behind closed doors, this family is already falling apart.
Things take a turn when Malik’s secret drug stash ends up putting young Bookeem in the hospital. What starts as a terrifying family crisis quickly exposes years of buried pain, guilt, and bad decisions.
Watching the family scramble to deal with the aftermath had me turning pages because every character was affected in a different way.
At the same time, Raheim’s relationship with Denise begins to crack. Denise reconnects with her ex, Tai, and one mistake turns into a betrayal that changes everything. What hit hardest wasn’t the cheating itself, it was watching Raheim slowly realize the truth.
The heartbreak felt real because the story focuses more on emotions than drama for the sake of drama.

It doesn’t throw you into chaos.

What really pulled me in was the way the author writes pressure. It’s never explained to you. You just see it everywhere. In the unpaid bills. In the conversations people avoid. In the mother who knows something is wrong before her son even speaks. In the child quietly watching everything from the hallway.
Those details made these characters feel like real people instead of characters created just to move the plot forward.
There’s one line that genuinely stayed with me: ‘People leaned on him because he always looked strong enough to hold everything together. But nobody asked what holding everything together was doing to him.’

Family secrets causing hurt
This book was different, not loud, fast lifestyle or killing but about family trying to hold everything together all while keeping secrets of hurt, pain and suffering. I would say Raheem was careful about family, he made sure everyone was safe. Meleik the next older brother was trying to get out, out of the house, poverty and his birth place. Booker and Salina the younger two paid attention to everything and even documented it. Great read but you must be focused and ready to hear lots of pain puzzled up in this story
